EP851 is just the retail version of the EP850 [proof, kinda] - Sony Xperia P, U, Sola, Go

I have recently been profiling a few USB chargers to figure out which one is the best for rapidly charging my phone. A few threads have pointed to the EP851 charger being something a bit special. I was thinking about it on the drive into work..
The specs say that it charges for 60 minutes talk time in 10 minutes.
The XS has 8.5 hours talktime,
This means the charger can fully charge the phone in 8.5 * 10, 85 minutes
Plugging these values into my Charge Timer app gives an estimated power output of 1235ma, almost identical to the 1211ma of mu cheapo 1500ma charger.
Given this closeness, and the fact that the EP850 is also rated at 1500ma I am conclude that they are the same thing.
So, if you want a fast charger for your XS, and are waiting for the EP851, stop waiting and get a genuine BlackBerry Playbook 2A charger. It is about 10% faster (est 1314ma) and available now.

Is it possible that the S has the "boost" pin with its USB connector and the 51 triggers it?

This is my understanding of it. PIN 1 and 4 provide power, 2 and 3 provide data (and 5 provides USB OTG?)
If pin 2 and 3 are not bridged, the phone will charge at the maximum rate as determined safe by the usb 2.0 spec
If pin 2 and 3 are bridged the phone will charge at the maximum rate as determined safe by the phone designers.
Both scenarios are, of course, restricted by the power that the connection can supply. For example, if you plugged the phone into a 1000A charger, I would expect it to only pull about 6? amps
As for "is the Playbook charger is safe?", the Playbook has the same type of battery as the SXS, just a lot bigger. For the Playbook, this charger is considered the slow charger, and a rapid charger that pushes more amps at 12V is available.
Obviously, its your phone so use it how you want. I prefer mine in my pocket instead of tethered to a wall so I am going to use the fastest charger I can.

Maximum charger amperage?

Alright, so I have a mini USB car charger that is rated at 2.0A (got with GPS) and I just want to make sure the extra amperage is not going to charge my battery too quickly and then kill it in the process. All I have to go on is that my wall charger is capable of only 1.0A and the computer USB is on the level of mA. Does anybody have a car charger or know the maximum amperage possible that these phones can take?

I've used a 2.0a charger but noticed that the battery didn't charge right.
On that note, also noticed that a .5a or 500mA charger after about 6 months killed my battery. (burned out and won't take a full charge anymore)
Recommendation is to stick to 1.0A charging as much as possible as the Wizard's charge circuit is designed at 1.0A charging and monitoring.
DOESN'T MATTER ..if u know the basic Ohms Law..its the max capacity of the charger.(or any source) the current regulating circuits will take care of the real charging current fed to the battery
I charge my phone on my computers USB connection all the time, all computers have a maximum of 500mA USB current.
Amps are pulled from the charger, not pushed to the phone.
Voltages are pushed to the phone, not pulled from the charger.
If the phone draws too much current from the charger, the voltage drops to a point where the maximum power (P (Watt) = U (Voltage) * I (Amps)) of the charger isn't exceeded.
According to the USB specification you need at least 200mA with 500mA recommended +5VDC.
More is never a problem, you could even use a 50A power supply without breaking your phone. Practically spoken: I wouldn't do that.

I have messed up a few devices before by putting the wrong charger on the device (2.0 amp charger on a droid eris and 1amp charger on the MOTOACTV) Is this a problem with the device's charging circuit? In general it should only pull up what it needs to charge but my devices were messed up?
I returned the first MOTOACTV after it wouldn't leave the boot screen and the second one I got acted funny on 1 amps as well. It charged fine on .75amp charger that came with the device but when I put it on my HTC Dinc charger it shot up from 10% to 20 to 30 etc. all within minutes. Hope I didn't mess this one up too.
Just trying to figure out what the deal is. My phone for sure charges faster when connected to 1amp vs .5amp (computer). This makes sense I understand because the device is able to handle 1amp, but I wonder if it would mess up with a 2amp charger.

The last two posts of 2008 are correct. Your phone is capable of drawing more than 500 mA but less than 1000 mA. If the charger is 1A, 1.5A, 2A, or 50A, it won't make a difference to the phone's charging time or life.
Wrong voltage can be bad, but phones are designed to support USB charging, as a minimum, and 1A to 2A is always safe. As was said in 2008, the charger pushes voltage to the battery, but the battery pulls current from the charger.

No, your charger is to blame. Maybe it isn't properly grounded. Phones with capacitive touch screens (not the Wizard! but maybe your phone) can get really weird on some chargers. I have a Nexus One with an aftermarket charger that always makes the touch screen go haywire. When I use an HTC charger, the phone has no problem. As far as I know, the damage isn't permanent, it's just that the sensors get confused. When I disconnect from the charger, turn the phone off, then turn it on, all is well.
My wizards were never bothered by chargers, no matter what kind, as long as they were mini-USB, they were the right voltage. The wizard doesn't take as much current as more modern phones, either.

Usb chargers will be rated at 5v, which is exactly the correct voltage to charge your device. What you want to make sure is you buy the correct "rated" amperage. Not because it will damage your phone. Amperage only exists as a sum of the power used by the device. You want to find a decent 1amp (1000mA) or higher if you wish, rated usb charger. The the mains charger for your phone is only rated at 1amp, so a 1amp charger is adequate. Avoid 500ma chargers as it will take twice as long to charge and gps / satnav applications will drain the battery even when charging at that rate.
Also if you have a new pc, most of the decent boards will specify 1amp charge even when off if it has on/off charge stated on manufacture details.
Newer phones will charge fine with higher amperage
The myth that charging your device at a faster rate will reduce the life of your device’s battery is false!
If you want quicker charging, look for a wall or car charger that delivers 2100 mA of current at 5 volts higher won't matter.... These lithium ion batteries can handle it... It was just back then if you were to try to put a faster charger in an older battery it (in any cases) just won't charge.

Beware external battery chargers

I thought my charger that I bought was defective cause I let it charge overnight and it wasn't fully charged. That is not the case.
The Charger that the Note comes with charges at 1A. Most of these external battery only chargers charge at 350mA.

Whereas for like cases, you have a better chance of actually saving money and getting quality at the same time.

So I guess for battery longevity, you should use a 500 mA charger (the typical USB output). That way it doesn't charge it too quick (and overheat the battery).

No, actually. Lithium ion batteries, unlike nickle-cadium batteries actually perform and last better with short, fast charges. Android's battery stats are helped by a few full cycles, but it is not better for the battery to full cycle or slow charge.

*I am not an electrical expert, I just play one on TV.*
There are standards for USB outs. Just Google the standard. That said, there is USB1, USB2, and now USB3. Check your motherboard to see which one you have. There is also a newish thing on motherboards that will do a rapid charge by changing a setting on the BIOS. That's what i got off the top of my head. Do a little research.
As was pointed out on another thread, the Note looks for a low resistance/short between pins 2 and 3 of the USB cable. If it sees the low resistance, it enables a high current charge; otherwise, it sticks with USB standard charge of less than 500 ma. The 2/3 pin setup is not true of USB connections to a computer. The Note power adapter is set up this way to do a fast charge. Most chargers and portable battery chargers leave pins 2 and 3 unconnected, so they will not fast charge a Note even if they can supply 1A.
I purchased a Scosche 5000 mah battery with USB ports for charging Ipads, Iphones, and other devices. It also charges a Galaxy Tab with a special USB adapter plug. I tried the Tab adapter with my new Note and it was charging at 5 percent charged every ten minutes or so. Without the USB adapter, the Note charged at 2 percent every ten minutes or so. Without the adapter, the Note displays an MTP initialization notification. With the adapter, there is no MTP notification.
The Scosche battery is a big improvement over older Trent 5000 mah batteries. There is a push button to turn the Scosche battery on. The battery will turn off if no device is attached or it the device is fully charged. One of the ports can output 2.1A for an Ipad. The Trent battery would run down if it was left on.
Staples carries the Scosche battery for $80. I used a $29 online coupon from Staples that expires 3/5/2012.
I did not see anywhere on the Scosche website where they sell the Tab adapter by itself.

Do you have a model number on that USB adapter? Maybe in the instructions?
There is only the name Scosche on the adapter. The guide only calls it the Galaxy Tab adapter.

What does an "MTP initialization notification" look like on the Note? How do I identify it?
If I don't see it when charging, does that mean it's getting a fast charge for sure, or just that it might be?

Cut a USB cable, and strip a portion of the power wires. Set the multimeter to a 10A DC current scale (assuming it supports 10A, but most craftsman and up do, with common and a 10A lead), disconnect the plug, attach common to negative wire and positive to positive wire, gator clips or something, then plug it in and read it. The current support and time it can be on depends on the multimeter. Mine does up to 10A for Max 30 sec.

Is it possible to see how many Amps of power are being provided?

Just curious if there is an app or something similar that would show how many amps are being provided when charging through a wall charger/USB powered hub? The reason I ask is that I'm thinking of buying a powered USB 3.0 Hub. The adapter that came with our phone says it's 2 Amp, so I am assuming our phone can pull 2 amps for charging. Just wanted to verify in some way that a 2 Amp dedicated port would really work for this phone.

When I get home, I'll download the kernel source and see if I can find out how much power it draws during charging. I doubt however, that it will draw 2A during charging as most chargers are rated to supply more power than the phone will accept.
Yeah, 2A seems like that could melt a battery charging that fast. Someone sent me a private message and told me to try CurrentWidget. I threw that on the phone and it registers as 1A while charging. But it appears like the widget doesn't break it down with decimals. For instance it could be charging with 1.8A and wouldn't know it. I put it in a standard USB port and it reported as charging with 0 Amps but the battery was indeed charging.
I took a quick look at the N7100 (International Note 2) source posted on Github by CM and it looks like AC charger is 650mA, USB is 450mA. It's a little hard to tell what exactly it's using for charging, so I'll try to verify that when I get home and have a chance to take a better look.

A 3100mAh Lithium Ion battery can easily handle a full 2A charge rate. The ideal charge profile for Lithium Ion is a CC/CV profile, starts at constant current between like 3V and 4V, which most LI batters can take a rate of 1C, meaning it can handle a charge rate of 3.1A, recommended charge rate to achieve the most possible charge/discharge cycles is usually 0.2C so for a 3100mAh battery that would be 620mA. Once the charge gets to the correct voltage it gets to constant voltage and charges until termination current usually in the 100mA range. So yes, it can handle a 2A charge no problem.

If this is true (first time I've seen this anywhere), that would line up great with the 650mA max charge rate I found. Also, I downloaded the VZW source, and it doesn't look to significantly different from the N7100 source, at least as far as the charger stuff is concerned, so I would say they both probably have a max charge rate of 650mA.
I appreciate the info and time you both put into this. I guess it means a 2A usb port will be slight overkill. Even changing the charge rate to a higher value seems to indicate a lower battery life. Makes you wonder how apple did it's math for the ipads charge rate. The battery must be huge to accommodate a 1.1A charge rate. Or they are sacrificing battery life for fast charging.

The original nook color 7" came with a 2A wall charger and that was 2 years ago... both my note 2 and nook color charge about the same rate (quick to 99% and slow to 100). The charger is probably cheaper to make at 2A rather than anything and plus it could be used to charge future devices. Also if you used a 1A charger to charge the note it might possibly get warm/hot from running at near full capacity.
Im using my OLD blackberry 700mA wall charger to charge the phone at night while im sleeping. No problems with heat.

No rapid charge using non-HTC chargers?

Hi all,
When I use the charger that came with the HTC One my phone charges great, rapid.
But when I use any other charger that I have in my home/office it charges very slow. Even with a 2.1 amp charger!
The charger that comes with the phone has an output of 1 amp.
I've tried multiple other chargers (1 amp and 2.1 amp) and they all trickle charge.
Anyone else noticing this?

I'm using old charges at home and in the office and it did seems slow but had not heard of rapid charge. Will the phone indicate this rapid charge mode? If not, is it real?
I'm getting slow charging even on the stock HTC charger. Not sure how I can enable this rapid charge cause 4+ hours from 0-1% to full is a bit ridiculous.

I use the cable and charger from my Nexus 7 and it charges fast. Off my USB it is slow.
Real AC chargers have two pins shorted. You can hack a USB to micro USB cable and short the same two pins to enable AC charging with any adapter, wall, USB, or car. Should be pins 3+4, but don't hold me to that.

i've done exactly this, and damned if the One still refuses to draw more than ~500 ma off of anything but the 2.1 A wallwart it came with (i don't have any others to try with). i'm about to dig out an old inverter to see if that will actually work. wish i'd paid more attention to my EE dad when i lived at home; i've gotten a serious crash course in this stuff while trying to get my One to charge in my car, when it's on.
edit: so i got my old inverter out, and spent about 15 minutes testing. i used the 2.0A adapter that came with my Nexus 7 to test, as well as the 3.1A Mediabridge adapter i got here. my phone was at about 45% when i started testing. unplugged, Battery Monitor Widget reported a drain of anywhere between 500ma and 650ma (running Ingress, wifi on). plugged in to the Mediabridge adapter showed, at best, a drain of 50ma. the Nexus adapter plugged in to my inverter charged at a fairly consistent ~120ma. i didn't touch my phone the entire time.
i left my Nexus 7 at work so i can't use it to repeat the test, but i will do so tomorrow. the cable i'm using is this one. i'm not crazy about having a ridiculous DC-AC inverter in my car for my phone, but if that's what i have to do so it can be used and not drain, then so be it. admittedly, i don't really understand these things enough to explain these variations, but i plan on learning ASAP. perhaps somebody else can shed some light on why the device charges different, and how it identifies an AC-USB adapter vs a DC-USB adapter.

At most, it should be around 3 hours for full charge, when in fact it is closer to 4-4.5 hours. It's the last 10% that is the issue, it will trickle charge to 100% rather than rapid charge.

Yes, I think that's exactly what the HTC does... I read a pretty good article recently about Li-Ion batteries that talks about how trickle charging is the best for battery life, and it wouldn't surprise me if HTC got a little aggressive the way the this phone charges since we can't swap the battery ourselves.
I'm trying one last car charger, which matches the wattage of my Nexus 7's 5Vdc/2A AC adapter (which I've had the best luck with, when charging the phone while in use): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009TBF7IG/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
If that doesn't work, I'm going to put a 300W inverter in my car with the AC adapters themselves and stop buying stinking DC adapters. This phone clearly pays very close attention to the wattage available from whatever it's plugged in to.

My next car will too, because I can only imagine that power requirements for these devices is going to increase.

Since the snap Dragon 600 has fast charging capabilities, why didn't HTC Include it in the kernel??? I've noticed my 2500 mAh note battery charges faster than my 2300 MAH HTC one

[Q] Fast Charger, compatible and without risk ?

Hi people
Since I'm part of the lucky people owning a Huawei Ascend Mate 7 (MT7-TL10), I'm actually looking some accessories like a quick charger.
I wish a charger better than the original one if possible, with EU pins, and with a good quality checked (I prefer to avoid some product with awesome specs but not tested ...)
So anyone have any idea where I can find a good charger, and without any risk for my phone ?

for few days i went to jarir book store on KSA . I found Charger good price also 2 USB 5 volt 2.4 Amber ... compatiable with mate 7 and faster from orignal ...
just to know more fasting to charge wil damge your batter of mate 7 quickly .also orignal 2 A will damge
for me I charging with Iphone charge 1A good for batter and Stander and low risk to Device
If you want proper charging, then always use the accessories coming with that product. It is tested for sure and good. Other than that, you can use any charger delivering the same charge. The original charger is 5 volt, 2 Ampere. Don't use anything above 2 amperes as it may damage the device. Below that will charge it slowly.
BTW, why you don't want to use the original charger?

I use Nexus 6 Turbo charge (made by Motorola) 5v 1.6A it charge full battery in 90 minute.

Is it safe for battery life of Mate 7?
I'm using a NTT Docomo Quickcharge 2.0 adapter and It does support it even though is not specified and it's not a qualcomm chip.

Can you test it with ampere (free in gplay) i don't think it will charge over 1800mA so that it acts like a normal 2a charger
Fast charging
Using a fast charger will destroy your battery faster. Not recommended as the battery is not removable. You can get a battery and if you are comfortable removing the back and swapping it out then go for it.

that is not correct as you are not connecting the charger to the battery directly. In fact the charger is just a power supply. The actual charger is integrated into the phone (charging controller).
In general you need to know that volts are pushed to the device by the power supply and amps are drawn by the device (phone) from the power supply. Therefor using a power supply with more than 5V will kill your phone but using one with 2A, 3A or even 4A will make no difference as the charging controller will just pull the amps required. Because of that you can not really fast charge a phone by changing the power supply only if the phone supports the fast charge option (for example some Nexus phones).
I tested this myself with a power supply (can provide 5V and 1.5 to 4 amps) and an amp meter. The phone always drew between 1.5 and 1.6 amps (with and empty battery, 8 to 10% left) regardless of the selected amps of the power supply. Using a power supply with less than 1.5A will kill the power supply as the phone tries to draw the 1.5 amps or more. As result the power supply will get hot and eventually die.
Since battery is not removable be careful with fast charging, since it will decrease the life span of the battery and in the end it will just give you less battery performance.. it is stupid... however.. there is situations where it can be really needed though but not on a regular basis..
Last weekend I would really had needed fast charging.. It forced me to spend about 3 hours on a cafee so I could make it 100% so I did know I did survive the day with gps and all other things.. However in these situations I really like the ultra power saving mode..it saved me that night.. when I was lost in stockholm.. and my phone was really the only way to get contact with people

Why don't you buy a powerbank? I can advice you the xiaomi 16000mah. That one charges fast and you can be mobile.

I wonder if a S6 charger do the trick. Stock charger is too slow damn. Spending 3 hours to have a full charge is not acceptable for me.
I'm going to be honest, it doesn't really matter how you charge your phone as long as you don't go over 5v and 2 Amps. Batteries will automatically lose cells from charge cycles and by the time you feel the effects of the battery going bad, you would have already moved on to the next device for the next person to worry about. And saying to use the Stock Charger isn't really good enough as the Stock charger doesn't serve as a Car charger also. If you want to charge your phone quick, and you already have a 2 Amp charger, Check your microUSB cable. Don't use junk cables, buy quality or use the cable you received with the device. You get what you pay for. Fast Charging won't work as the Charger has a chip inside that communicates with the Phone and Device. Also, when buying a charger, don't just randomly buy a charger online, Make sure its UL Tested. Even if it says UL tested, there should be a test number on that UL Label, take it a step further and google it and make sure it matches the charger specs and passes as knockoff chargers are notorious for copying other chargers Regulatory icons to make it seem authentic. You don't want to buy a junk charger that ends up burning your house down or gives you a very bad 120 Volt shock through the microUSB cable that would also kill and fry your phone.

1.6A is nothing.. i use 2.0A and it still chrges 3 hours
one friend conected his phone to a hi suite, he went to repair sistem or something like that, and it pop out an option of QUICK CHARGE... even he doesent know how that hapends, now his phone charges faster. he is on b331 rom

You have not read my earlier post or you did not understand it. Changing the charger on the Mate 7 will have NO effect (zero, nada) on the time required to charge your phone except the charger delivers less then appr. 1.6A. Then it would take longer and evetually kill the charger. The Mate 7 uses a Kirin chip which has no fastcharge implemented. Samsung uses Qualcomm Chips with implemented fastcharge technology. The charger (in fact a power supply) and the phone/CPU/charge controller need to communicate with each other, otherwise fastcharge will not be activated (the reason fastcharge with charge-only cables does not work because they lack the required data cables for communication).

The amps of the charger don't matter at all -> amps are PULLED by the phone not pushed to the phone. You could use a charger with 100 or 1000 amps and it would not hurt your phone a bit as long as it is only charged with 5 Volts.
More amps (>1.6A) on the charger do not improve the time for charging one second.

Yes, and that won't change one bit even if you use the best and most expensive charger and a 1000$ cable. The Mate 7 is limited by its hardware (built in charge controller) and pulls max 1.6A. End of story.
As long as you don't understand how charging works you will spend 100's of bucks for cables and chargers to no avail.
The only reason, why charging with some charges is quicker than with others is that those chargers actually deliver the amps they are supposed to deliver. There are a lot of cheap/bad chargers out there which are labelled with 5V/2A but only deliver a fraction of the amps. You can identify those chargers easily because they get extremly hot. I use a 2A charger from Aukey which gets only lukeworm.
