PSA: verizon to kill unlimited data 3g to Lte upgades - HTC Rezound

Just in case anyone who still has a 3g phone wants to keep unlimited data they may want to upgrade now.Verizon is killing unlimited grandfathered 3g when you upgrade to LTE devices starting mid summer. If nothing else there'sgoing to be a ton of angry iPhone customers this fall

Source?

I honestly hope verizon just gives the bird to apple and there subsidies.

Thank god I moved on in time

Just to clarify, we aren't getting our plans taken away are we? That's how Android Guys made it sound. They quoted "Everyone will be on shared data". Kinda gave me a panic moment

HA that sucks. although, that's great for me as a sales person cuz now i can get the attention of all my customers who have 3g and be like, hey, your update is soon, you should do it now to save your unlimited data.
actually that makes my job harder. damn you verizon!!

I'm curious as to what will happen to people with Unlimited 4G plans. Will they be brought in with the 3G upgrades too once this goes live?

Yeah, the next obvious step is to kill unlimited 4G plans.
Eff that.

ugh. i'm unlimited. honestly, if they do kill unlimtied for us and offer family share plans, then i won't be so mad, and i'll jump on a family share data plan so my mom can get a smartphone..she's wanted one but doesn't wanna pay 30 a month for data lol

Yea, Seems Vzn is doing everything they can to slowly kill off any Unlimited data

Wait, so here's my question--my brother has in iphone on an unlimited plan. If we activate a 4G phone on his line, do they consider that a 3G plan because the plan was purchased with a 3G phone? Or would it be a "4G" plan? What if I activated his iphone on my line? Would it magically become a 3G plan then?

from what i understand, if you have a 3g phone and put a 4g phone on after this is done, then yeah you're not unlimited anymore.
if you drop down to 3g after this is done, they'll prob keep you unlimited until you go back to 4g, then you'll be tiered
like we've all got "3g unlimited" plans because we all got unlimited whenonly 3g phones were out..now we're on 4g with teh same "3g" plan
actually, i bet ANY change to data after this happens will drop you to tiered and not let you keep unlimited..even going down to 3g i bet they'll tier you

I moved to Verizon on the Thunderbolt and got an unlimited plan--my first Verizon phone was a 4G phone.
---------- Post added at 06:52 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:48 PM ----------
Looks like even unlimited 4G plans will be moved over.
"LTE is our anchor point for data share. So, as you come through an upgrade cycle and you upgrade in the future, you will have to go on to the data share plan. And moving away from, if you will, the unlimited world and moving everyone into a tiered structure data share plan."

free upgrade
I got an email 2 days ago for a free early upgrade to a 4g phone. Yesterday I went and got my free HTC Rezound phone, all I had to pay was activation fee. When I asked how I got the deal they said they are trying to get more people on the 4g LTE network. I got to keep my unlimited data plan.

Good thing I gots me some unlimited 4g
Sent from my aokp_tenderloin using XDA Premium HD app

If they try and take my unlimited away when my upgrade comes at the end of the year, I will go back to sprint. They were not as good as Verizon, but it is better than being on a tiered plan.

So, what if I bought a new 4G phone off contract and activated that myself? Bye bye unlimited?

It sounds like they'll be nuking those too. It's just going to take a bit longer.
Edit: All I know for sure is if they are killing my unlimited 4G plan, I'm going to be streaming pr0n to my phone 24/7 until they do. In a childish attempt to use as much bandwidth as possible, mostly as a f*ck you.

What good is LTE, unless low data user or "rich"?

Still not getting folks being so high up with LTE considering most people that inhabit these boards will use the alloted data in the first few days of the month
3G seems fine for me and streaming higher band video content is a battery hog anyway. Speed is nice but IMO, a $30 3G unlimited data plan seems a far more pratical option for most people.
Allotted data? What are you talking about? Correct me if i'm wrong but you are merely assuming that Verizon won't have an unlimited 4G data plan for smartphones. I have seen no information suggesting that there will be no unlimited plan available.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
I hear that Verizon has plans to initially have unlimited LTE data plans for smartphones but they might change that in the future. I'm sure that Verizon's will throttle people's data if they reach 5 gb... Personally, I don't see why they don't simply charge extra for for LTE to allow it to be unlimited like Sprint does. I wouldn't mind paying 10 extra dollars a month for unlimited data from Verizon... I think that the problem with carriers is that they don't want people hogging their airwaves with their PS3, their laptop, and their little brother's iPod Touch tethered to the phone on their network with the "that's what your cable/dsl network is for" attitude. If they truly feel that way, they should start charging cable/dsl prices and remove the caps while using some of the money to build more towers so they won't have to worry about it. They have devices that they're getting ready to release that are capable of playing/streaming 1080p HD videos. I'd be pissed if I bought one of these smartphone//tablets and were only able two watch two or three videos the entire month. If they're gonna have devices that require a lot of bandwidth to reasonably perform to one's liking, the shouldn't release these devices until their networks are able to handle them being in the hands of the masses. It makes no sense to pay 40-50 dollars for internet at 4G speeds while paying 250-600+ for a device and have to go to find a hotspot to connect to wifi or connect to wifi at home.
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA App
3G unlimited for $30 and LTE for $50 seems fare. That way, they get the revenue for folks using the service to update towers. I would say $40, but probably no way VZW would charge that for LTE.
If Verizon has unlimited LTE data for HTC Thunderbolt, they would get a lot of people to buy it. The question is would they get enough revenue to continue to keep it unlimited while upgrading their towers... It would be understandable if they put a 5 gb cap on the mobile hotspot feature because they wouldn't be able to sell their USB modems (which they charge mb and gb packages). But to not have unlimited LTE data from Verizon for a smartphone save the mobile hotspot feature is ridiculous imo. AT&T's LTE plans for the future include limited data and data speed to be purchased in tiers; Verizon can really keep them at bay with unlimited LTE data for strictly smartphones. The question is will Verizon compete directly with AT&T's LTE plans (match AT&T's plans). They reality is that they don't have to. They can make a more attractive unlimited LTE data plan and net more customers and "defectors" from AT&T while making them look like greedy money-hungry cornballs.

Good one, I want the Thunderbolt for the device and not so much for the LTE. That said, yes I can sit here at the office and run our LTE USB and get 20 - 25 mbps and run up 5 gigs in short fashion then really start paying out the wazoo, but RevA EVDO at 2 mbps I can do just fine watching HULU or teathering Skype with video or whatever which is fast enough. I might give a few bucks more for the LTE if it is unlimited, but never buy myself into a plan that caps my data and makes me pay more just to get a speed boost that I just do not need now.
If 3g would actually give me the speed its supposed to I wouldn't need 4g at all. I rarely get over 200kbps down on att's hspa network.
That would be dumb for them to charge same price as current data. How do they justify the 4G investment? that would be one red looking net present value business case
My guess is $45 (30 +15 premium).

[Q] Called from Sprint, using too much data?

So I received a call from Sprint Friday morning, which actually woke me up, and rep told me that I was using too much 4G data and my account would be monitored for the next 10 days and if I continued using so much 4G that my account would be canceled. My data usage isn't anything crazy either.
Has anyone else had this happen?
I was so grogy at the time I didn't really argue with him and hung up the phone. Later that day I thought more and more about it so I called Sprint back trying to find someone who knew about this, after about 5 reps, a dude got me a number for the department that called me. Curiously enough he couldn't even tell me what the department was called, just said it was a small department that only handles these things. Unfortunately they are only open 8-8 M-F so I haven't been able to contact them.
Wow.. that's weird man. Keep us posted.. I'm in phoenix and have access to some of the test 4g area's setup, but don't get to use them often. Hope that's not the case!
Do you mean maybe roaming data? Because I was under the impression that Sprint data was completely unlimited.
I know in General, someone else got calls too but that was about roaming data.

Exactly... Not to mention I'm being forced to pay extra for 4G, why shouldn't I use as much as I want on an unlimited plan?
I would have a huge problem with this since I left tmobile because of their 5gb limit on data. And had to give up my sweet my touch 4g which I honestly still miss.
That's really weird, considering that there isn't even a way to monitor how much 4G data is being used anyways. The info on the website only reflects 3g data use. I thought 4G was true unlimited.

I bet the rep was new. Maybe you were roaming 3G. I think we are allowed like 250Mb 3G data while roaming. But you gotta go over that limit several months before they do anything typically. 4G/3G is unlimited on our phones. I don't know of any other Wimax 4G companies besides Sprint and Clear. I use Clear's network everyday for 4G since Sprint doesn't have 4G here. And never had a problem... Sprint does hold half their shares or something.

Well, he stated I was in violation of the terms of service of 4G and was using too much data, but when I asked him about what terms I was violating he wouldn't state it. The only way they would really know what I was actually using my 4G data for would be if they were doing deep packet inspection on my IP packets. The weird part is I've been using 4G and tether since the Evo 4G came out, and my usage patterns haven't changed much. That's what is really confusing.
interesting, especially seeing how all there commercials are bragging about unlimited data.
what do you normally do with your 4G on a daily basis?
maybe it was for roaming . not 4G , 4G . you must get sick ass signal of 4G whereever you're at on a daily basis haha
Any chance it was a fake call? I've used probably 30GB of 4G some months, no issues.

[Q] Just got my Sprint termination letter

I got a contract termination letter in the mail from Sprint today saying I was using too much data while roaming. I have been in contact with them since day 3 about my poor coverage (-115db) at home and work (-105db 1x!). The airwave is backordered for 4 months, so oops.
Question is: I am new to Cincinnati. I need a carrier for 3 smartphones (one in Iowa) with 5gb per month on two of them and 10gb on the third. I would like to stay under $200 per month which cuts out At&t and Verizon (reason I left Big Red). T-Mobile jumps to mind, but the Iowa phone would be left roaming all the time. Cincinnati Bell is the same. Any ideas? And no, the Iowa phone can't use the T-Mobile wifi calling, no wifi

No, they canceled my early termination fees about a month ago due to my complaining. They also waive them when they cancel your contract for excessive roaming so I'm double good there.

I would try tmobile the other 2 will cost you a lot money with the amount of data you use, or try to go craiglist and take over a unlimited data plan for ATT , I seen a few people on my area doing, and that's what I did with ky last Verizon line, I do miss LTE tho

Just wondering b/c I use prl 00001 and have Sero Premium which have unlimited data and voice roaming. I use prl 00001 with every phone I get and have been doing it for over a year now. I never get any extra charges or letters from Sprint. Yes, I do use over 300mb a month. On avg I use about 1.2 gb a month

Loved that little phone lol. They lost a customer by telling me that, maybe they didn't want somebody who actually used their unlimited data to keep it... 8gb with my Eris probably would wind up as more with a phone that supported flash. No idea what I'd be using with the 3d since I never had a signal.

the fine print on the contract say's 300mb roaming data per month. if you're worried about it, download something like juice defender that will choke your data usage or set your data to wifi only whenever you're not on sprint's towers.
I just didn't care. been with sprint since june when the 3d came out. was in iowa then and they promised it would be better when i moved here. moved in august and it was worse lol. they agreed to waive my etf, i just been waiting for a deal elsewhere.
funny, they told me the same thing. i have been with sprint for 14 years, the last 10 years i was in KC and couldn't complain (except about clearwire) and they swore to me up and down cincinnati was actually better coverage, and when i got here, jesus its horrid. i guess there's a lot more "tower" sites here, but they won't listen to you about the elevation. i've called over 10 times, and there is just apparently no way to talk to anyone that has anything to do with getting messages to the actual network systems people. The problem here, cincinnati valley, is that this town is crazily hilly. strong signal down between the hills and at the hill tops but the 80% of the city that is actually ON a hill's slope gets zero signal, and its even worse on 4g. the highways are the only place with reliable service. Verizon has solid service everywhere, and t-mobile is the best national here. Cincinnati bell is amazing as they have a transmitter on every light post and telephone pole in both counties, but they have horrible roaming agreements and plans if you leave the city with any regularity.
All of us with sprint love it except for the actual coverage, which makes it embarrassing to try and show off sprints greatness. The biggest problem is Sprint doesn't seem to understand how elevation works with these 7 hills and mini-mountains and thinks its a flat city like the midwest, and just covers in downward cones from their cell transmitter sites. ATT also seems to have this problem.
In cincinnati, verizon is solid coverage, T-Mobile is awesome, better than verizon. And the stupid cinicnnati bell is the best. ATT and Sprint are retarded for not utilizing local knowledge and input with their deployment here. I'm as close to being fed up as I can without switching. I'm right on the line. now, not only am i upset and frustrated, but i'm worried about roaming data overages or termination. i just use my phone for tv, directv nfl, radio, hell, i use my phone for media more than my tv, just under 5gigs a month, which is the main reason i still don't seriously consider switching. thank god for wifi @work.
So, i'd recommend Tmobile for national, and i'm weary of cincinnati bell but maybe its ok for you. Verizon gets a lot of minor complaints where i work, and their thunderbird sucks compared to the evo 4g, but they have strong lte 4g here. stay away from AT&T.
good luck!!
----ps, anyone know how to reach actual network deployment department @ sprint??? its so easy to explain to them what the problem is and how to fix it. there's just no way to get the info to them

Thanks for the input, I was contemplating Cinci Bell but their customer service sucks and I will travel back to Iowa 4-5 times a year. That and the Sensation is way better than any phones they have LOL (especially at $99). Now trying to decide if I should wait another two weeks for the Amaze since I have 30 days.

What all do I need to do to my phone to sell it?

Galaxy Note AT&T radio tweaks

Is anyone working on tweaking the AT&T Notes radio? I don't mean for TMobile, I mean so that HSPA+ as well as LTE are faster? The reason I ask, is I had/have an HTC HD2 that gets way better data transfer rates on 3g, than this phone does on HSPA+ in the same area. I have been able to hit 3-4Mbits down on this phone, and was getting 5-to almost 8 MBits on the HD2. (There have been a dozen plus radios on the HD2) The data speed on this Note is disappointing.

I easily get 10MB down on my this phone on HSPA+, which is the same as my last phone. I'd say there is something wrong with your phone.
HSPA+
Are you running a stock rom? Mines rooted, but otherwise stock. Also, are you on AT&T?

I've tested running completely stock, stock + rooted, and on The Collective Unofficial ROM.
Yes I am on AT&T.

I'm running into the same issues. I am thinking that since I am a long time AT&T unlimited user, I only have two options available:
Note: I already unlocked, then rooted the stock with Odin, did a back-up with
Titanium, did a nandroid back from the phone, and loaded the clockwork recovery into my phone so that I can load ROMS easier.
Options:
1. Subscribe to AT&Ts NEW service options and I will be subscribed to their
new HSPA+/LTE club (give up unlimited) without any problems.
OR
2. Don't subscribe to any of their new plans, and stay stuck with the Edge and
3G, and Unlimited data services, all while the phone falsely shows 4G at the top of the screen.
My fastest down speed has been around 6.5 MB - depending on where I am while 4G was being displayed on the phone.
It seems to me that the HSPA+/LTE requires a special subscription.
Network Mode does not appear on my phone, so I can't ensure that it
it has a 4G service selected. I was looking for a fix that would turn my Network Mode back on.
I can see a defaulted APN titled AT&T PTA, but it is locked from edits.
If I set my phone to that defaulted AT&T PTA everything works but data. SpeedTest immediately displays, "Try Again".
In my Elixir application, if I choose "Turn WiMax(4G) ON,
I get the following in Elixir:
=====Data======
State: DcInactiveState
disconnected with last try at 4:38 PM
fail because
SERVICE_OPTION_NOT_SUBSCRIBED
===============
So, I think that either we need to figure out how to turn Network Mode back on,
for the AT&T Notes, or give up unlimited and go with their new plan.
Some kind of way it seems like a subscription may be tied into allowing HSPA/LTE speeds.
You don't have to give up your grandfathered unlimited plan for HSPA or LTE. They just upgrade you to the 4G version of the unlimited plan.
You may have to do it in an actual AT&T store (not a dealer) or over the phone with customer care.
Also these phones don't have wimax...

I've been on the phone with a couple of reps., been into an AT&T shop a few times, and they all keep telling me that I have to upgrade to their new plan which does not have unlimited. The best they could offer me was a 5 GB plan. Also, they said I have never been on a smartphone plan with them. Although, I was previously using an HTC HD2 (sounds like a smartphone too me), but it was not a smartphone registered in their system. Records show that I'm a razor user.
They have no record of the unlocked phones that have been using like the HTC HD2. So now, when I take that SIM out of the HTC HD2 and slide it into the Note, I'm not getting 4G.
And finally, they said that if I was previously on one of their Smartphone plans I would be able to transfer to the LTE service.
When I zoom out and look at the big picture, I don't think most people have a need for the extra speed anyway.
Any thoughts... I think I am stuck with the Edge.
4g vs 3g
Don't bother upgrading. I had unlimited, and am now on their 5gb a month plan with tethering. and I am not getting any faster speeds. I seriously doubt it's the plan, and I am getting billed for 4g.

I think maybe I misread your earlier post. Do you mean that you have an AT&T Unlimited plan (calling minutes, etc) or AT&T unlimited data plan?
If you have a grandfathered unlimited data plan, they should upgrade you to the unlimited 4G data plan with the new SIM card.
If you have the Unlimited calling plan, then you might have to suck it up and get one of the capped data plans if you really want LTE.
Either way, to get the faster data speeds you would need a new SIM card. The older SIMs (even from last year in some cases) can't handle the faster LTE speeds and can cripple the data speeds on the phone to the point you are describing.
I have the unlimited data and calling plan. Reps. just told me straight out that I will lose the unlimited data. But after reading Cobra's post, I have no clue as to what the real trigger is for making HSPA+/LTE work on my phone.
Well, I'm getting ready to strip everything to see how ICS looks, and then go from there..
I guess Cobra there is still no answer. You switched and it is still slow, I did not switch and it is still slow. Does the LTE service really exist
p.s. I can't wait until I don't have to challenge the image verification. I cannot understand those &^&%^ letters

The reps are BSing you. I have a grandfathered unlimited plan & switched to a LTE unlimited plan by asking the rep to do it for me when I activated my I717. I came from a N7000 to an I717. Are you in a LTE area? I went from 3-6MB DL to 20-35ish MB DL, depending where I'm at.

Good grief.. I'll try again at a new location. I'll simply tell them that I want to change my current unlimited plan to the LTE unlimited plan. I am in the Wash, D.C. metro area. They act like an LTE unlimited plan doesn't exist.
Cobra are you in an LTE area? I wonder why your speeds aren't up there if you are in fact on the LTE plan.

I just picked mine up yesterday. Upgraded from a Nexus One. I still have the old SIM, it's disabled. I purchased the phone at the ATT store. Comes with a NEW SIM or you won't get LTE speeds.
1. Other than the upgrade fee, my monthly bill is the same. I still have my unlimited data plan, only since I'm LTE now I don't get throttled until I hit 5G.
2. I get 25M DL, 8.5 UL at my house. I live in San Diego. (depending on where I am. I tried here at work and got **** for DL, right next to thousands of iPhone users)
If someone is telling you different, they are lying.

You guys got me feeling slighted over here Ok, I'm defintely going to follow-up again. I was wondering if your Nexus smartphone was a recognized AT&T phone. The pivotal point for grandfathering unlimited to LTE may be that they will do it only for THEIR phones that were previously recognized as smartphones. When they look up my records it comes back showing that I'm officially using one of their previous motorola razor phones, which at the time was not on a their smartphone plan, even though I was able to use the SIM in an unlocked non-AT&T HTC-HD2 without any problems.
So, maybe if you come from a recognized AT&T smartphone they will upgrade you, but if your last phone registered with them was not considered a smartphone while on an unlimited data plan, then they will not grandfather you in..
I gues it's worth another try.
p.s. thanks for helping me respond and overcome that *&^ image verification challenge

No. It has to be an "unlimited smartphone data plan". If you have that no matter what phone you are using, you can keep it. Usually you can tell by how much you are paying for the data plan. There was a "unlimited" plan for other non smartphones for like $20 for phones like the Razor etc but the smartphone plan for what were known previously as PDAs was like $39.
So which one do you have? I am pretty sure if you only have the unlimited non-smartphone plan you cannot convert that to a smartphone unlimited plan...
LTE
Yes, and I think there is a list of cities somewhere. Seattle area, as high tech as it is, does NOT have it yet, while smaller cities, and lower tech areas do? Doesn't make sense to me. So for now I am stuck with HSPA+
On my HD2, I had regular 3g speeds, then I did a radio change, and used the Rafpigna Froyo ROM, and suddenly I started getting speeds like my sig pic shows. My data is slower with this ROM, but from what I have been reading around the net, my speeds are pretty typical for a lot of the Notes on HSPA+
Forgot to mention that I installed the leaked ICS ROM, and it is very much worth doing. Data speed went up a little as well. Still not as much as my HD2 was though.

The speed of the network will always vary greatly. They are completely based on your proximity to the tower and the current load from other users on the tower. Unless you can find a tower with no other users on it and you can repeat the test from the exact same spot, there is no way to compare speeds between phones, or even the same phone at different locations.
If you find some threads where people are reporting their speeds, you will see that they vary by massive amounts.
I can say that I am still onthe unlimited data plan and on stock ROM I was getting 10Mbps. It must be your area because my last phone was hitting max capability on HSPA @ 7.2 Mbps.
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy Noteā„¢
Edit, just to clarify I went from a 3G only phone and finally got a 4G phone and I really don't thing they are trying to throttle your speeds just because you are on 4G with an unlimited data plan.
I was an AT&T rep from a long time ago (before cingular) and one thing that has held true is that all reps are told by corporate to push people into new plans no matter what. I was told as a rep by another rep that even something as swapping phones required new 2 year contracts which was and still is bull.
AT&T arbitrarily swapped my plan when I went from my G1 to a streak because they said I never was on a smartphone plan. I explained to them that I was on a blackjack and went to a G1 (paying $30 a month) and then I went to the streak. They told me tough luck and they were keeping me on the tiered data plan. I calmly asked for their manager, when I was transferred I exploded on the manager telling them that I call every time when I swap phones to make sure everything is good (not needing to upgrade my plan or anything) and that it was their screwup and if they're treating me like this I was going to leave. I promptly got an apology and asked for my current IEMI number and we were done. I threw in words and phrases like improper business practices, bait and switch and other such things. Managers have more "Say" on what they can do, you tend to get things taken care of because they just don't want to deal with you.
that's been my experience with AT&T, they're far from perfect, but if you start yelling and being upset, you're more likely to get what you want. Sad but true.
LTE
Nope, no LTE in Seattle yet. Only HSPA+ Seattle is very high tech, and yet, no LTE here. One of AT&T's major data centers is here as well. Hard to tell why they are slow rolling it out here.
I don't get to see the invoices. My wife works for AT&T, and gets those. She did tell me I am being billed for 4g though.

[Q] Q: Should I drop my SERO plan for Solavei/Tmobile?

Unsure where to post, so feel free to move if needed.
I currently am on SERO-P with my Evo 3D and have a t-mobile phone on Solavei.
I'm thinking of dropping my SERO plan and paying the $80 ETF since SERO is not transferable.
With SERO, I get unlimited data, but I can't ever get 4g where I am reliably in the St. Louis MO metro area and 3G is so slow.
With Solavei, for $49 I get unlimited talk, text, and 5GB of data (then 2G).
I'm torn because of the truly unlimited, not throttled data that may get better down the road.
Your thoughts?
I have never heard of Sero. What network do they use?
Unless it's changed recently Solavei is throttled at 4gb not 5.
Edit: wait you said evo 3d so I assume it's running off of sprints network.
Idk I guess if you think you can get by with the 4gb of full speed data I would say go for it.
One other question to ask yourself though is if you will be able to use sprints 4G network when it's launched in your area and how soon it will be available in your area.
Since you are in St Louis I would think you would be getting sprint LTE fairly soon.

Solavei caps at 4GB and my experience so far (just four hours) has been abysmal. No roaming as promised on my HTC One S. 4G not as fast as Tmobile Prepaid 4G.
How many minutes do you talk per month?
Sprint's network is brutal. There are too many decent GSM options offering HSPA+ at the same or better price than SERO that it's certainly worth investigating. Have fun / good luck.
