[Q] Called from Sprint, using too much data? - HTC EVO 3D

So I received a call from Sprint Friday morning, which actually woke me up, and rep told me that I was using too much 4G data and my account would be monitored for the next 10 days and if I continued using so much 4G that my account would be canceled. My data usage isn't anything crazy either.
Has anyone else had this happen?
I was so grogy at the time I didn't really argue with him and hung up the phone. Later that day I thought more and more about it so I called Sprint back trying to find someone who knew about this, after about 5 reps, a dude got me a number for the department that called me. Curiously enough he couldn't even tell me what the department was called, just said it was a small department that only handles these things. Unfortunately they are only open 8-8 M-F so I haven't been able to contact them.

Wow.. that's weird man. Keep us posted.. I'm in phoenix and have access to some of the test 4g area's setup, but don't get to use them often. Hope that's not the case!

Do you mean maybe roaming data? Because I was under the impression that Sprint data was completely unlimited.
I know in General, someone else got calls too but that was about roaming data.

That's weird, keep us posted. But they do crack down on roaming data

I got a letter saying I was violating my data tems.
I have an Overdrive with a line JUST FOR DATA and use it on 4G ONLY. I haven't used so much as a BYTE on 3G.
I have my EVO 3D with unlimited data and use it primarily on 4G.
If it's NOT unlimited data, don't sell me UNLIMITED DATA

Nope, he said specifically 4G data. Can you even roam on 4G?

Exactly... Not to mention I'm being forced to pay extra for 4G, why shouldn't I use as much as I want on an unlimited plan?

I would have a huge problem with this since I left tmobile because of their 5gb limit on data. And had to give up my sweet my touch 4g which I honestly still miss.

That's really weird, considering that there isn't even a way to monitor how much 4G data is being used anyways. The info on the website only reflects 3g data use. I thought 4G was true unlimited.
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk

I bet the rep was new. Maybe you were roaming 3G. I think we are allowed like 250Mb 3G data while roaming. But you gotta go over that limit several months before they do anything typically. 4G/3G is unlimited on our phones. I don't know of any other Wimax 4G companies besides Sprint and Clear. I use Clear's network everyday for 4G since Sprint doesn't have 4G here. And never had a problem... Sprint does hold half their shares or something.

Well you may not be able to view how much 4G data your using but Sprint would certainly monitor it.

Well, he stated I was in violation of the terms of service of 4G and was using too much data, but when I asked him about what terms I was violating he wouldn't state it. The only way they would really know what I was actually using my 4G data for would be if they were doing deep packet inspection on my IP packets. The weird part is I've been using 4G and tether since the Evo 4G came out, and my usage patterns haven't changed much. That's what is really confusing.

interesting, especially seeing how all there commercials are bragging about unlimited data.

what do you normally do with your 4G on a daily basis?
maybe it was for roaming . not 4G , 4G . you must get sick ass signal of 4G whereever you're at on a daily basis haha

Any chance it was a fake call? I've used probably 30GB of 4G some months, no issues.

honestly... i would tell them to kiss my a**... if you happen to call them back or they call u back, tell them just that...
they are not gonna do anything..

y'all getting trolled, dude lying or had a nightmare. sprint 4g is unlimited as is the 3g, its true about roaming though.
sources: sprint documentation and my data usage, i would have been dropped back when i had my hero, my LOWEST data usage was 15gb and i will not quote my max

Here is another XDA thread I just found. Besides, the call came from a Sprint service number.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1137063

That post was about "rooting and tethering for free" and roaming.
Are YOU doing any of these things?

Just got a call from sprint.

Apparently they're cracking down on roaming. So be careful if you use roam control. Glad I got my Airave yesterday, according to them my roaming usage was 1000 last month, 1200 the month before that, and 1600 before that.

If their cracking down on roaming by calling customers telling them your using to much roaming then id say They may have an issue with their network and coverage. I myself have seen numerous times inside their coverage area that i go into roaming. All I have to do is drive a block sometimes and I show I go into roaming. All this and we have 4g here in some areas as well. But limited. The roaming issues really got bad a few months ago. In fact I thought I had seen an article on it that they lost some roaming agreement with another company that Verizon had bought out. That Sprint shared tower support with..
Maybe instead of barking at their customers for this issue they need to actually increase and fix the Network they have now to resolve the issue.
Even having said that. If you know your in roaming why the heck would you want to try and push so much data... ??? Its slower.
I have a buddy that actually WORKED for Sprint but lived outside of the "coverage" map and the seriously kicked him off of the service and canceled his contracts for using too much roaming time.

that doesn't sound too bad to me... and I'll get hella trade in value for this Evo3D. It's their fault I'm roaming constantly so they give me a way out of my contract which makes moving to another carrier that much easier.
Sounds like a **** move, but, if you can't get a good signal to get off of roaming, well, go to that other carrier.
...I've been thinking about doing this lately, wouldn't be hard...I'm roaming constantly now...but Verizon and ATT's plans completely. fncking. suck.
Can't wait until they call me on that one. Store rep actually sold me my Evo 4G a year ago saying "Don't worry. Sprint signal is really weak where you live but you can roam freely on Verizon's network." So yeah, if they don't want people to roam, they can get a real network or stop complaining: because that's how they sell their service to customers.
And as far as the Airave, it's not free... you pay at least $4.50/mo in federal fees. May not sound like a lot but it's another fee I don't need on my account due to Sprint's lame network. Plus, it's nothing more than glorified VOIP. If I wanted a cordless VOIP phone that uses my internet bandwidth, I'd pick up my Vonage line and use the cordless on that line! And get better range doing it!
Mike
I totally agree and those numbers aren't data usage they're the minutes I've used. I still actually use my phone for voice calls quite a bit.

No, you've got it all wrong....we've got:
"Free" Nationwide Roaming and
"Unlimited" Data
....trust us, this is "a thing"
EDIT: Disclaimer - I have used over 10gb a month, going over the invisible 5gb limit, many times and never got a letter or call. Some have. However that's only beating up their own network...but roaming costs Sprint money and they won't take very much abuse(?) of that feature.
Just so you know for the everything data family atleast, the contract states that you can roam only for 800 minutes and 300 mb each month. For the data, if you go over that you may be charged .03 per kilobyte.

[Q] Just got my Sprint termination letter

I got a contract termination letter in the mail from Sprint today saying I was using too much data while roaming. I have been in contact with them since day 3 about my poor coverage (-115db) at home and work (-105db 1x!). The airwave is backordered for 4 months, so oops.
Question is: I am new to Cincinnati. I need a carrier for 3 smartphones (one in Iowa) with 5gb per month on two of them and 10gb on the third. I would like to stay under $200 per month which cuts out At&t and Verizon (reason I left Big Red). T-Mobile jumps to mind, but the Iowa phone would be left roaming all the time. Cincinnati Bell is the same. Any ideas? And no, the Iowa phone can't use the T-Mobile wifi calling, no wifi

No, they canceled my early termination fees about a month ago due to my complaining. They also waive them when they cancel your contract for excessive roaming so I'm double good there.
I hear very mixed things about T-Mobile, but they do have cheap plans. Got to ask a rep about their roaming limits...

I would try tmobile the other 2 will cost you a lot money with the amount of data you use, or try to go craiglist and take over a unlimited data plan for ATT , I seen a few people on my area doing, and that's what I did with ky last Verizon line, I do miss LTE tho

1. Like the other post say "Were you using prl 00001" or any other prl besides the default one?
2.Also what plan were you on and is unlimited data roaming included in your plan?
Just wondering b/c I use prl 00001 and have Sero Premium which have unlimited data and voice roaming. I use prl 00001 with every phone I get and have been doing it for over a year now. I never get any extra charges or letters from Sprint. Yes, I do use over 300mb a month. On avg I use about 1.2 gb a month

Yeah, T-Mobile is the cheapest national left. Didn't know about taking over peoples data plans. Big Red told me that when I upgraded my Eris I would have to sign a new contract and my bill would shoot up, otherwise I never woulda dropped them.

Loved that little phone lol. They lost a customer by telling me that, maybe they didn't want somebody who actually used their unlimited data to keep it... 8gb with my Eris probably would wind up as more with a phone that supported flash. No idea what I'd be using with the 3d since I never had a signal.
What about Boost (owned by sprint but just bought a new home)? Their website is vague, do they care if I roam?

the fine print on the contract say's 300mb roaming data per month. if you're worried about it, download something like juice defender that will choke your data usage or set your data to wifi only whenever you're not on sprint's towers.
I just didn't care. been with sprint since june when the 3d came out. was in iowa then and they promised it would be better when i moved here. moved in august and it was worse lol. they agreed to waive my etf, i just been waiting for a deal elsewhere.
funny, they told me the same thing. i have been with sprint for 14 years, the last 10 years i was in KC and couldn't complain (except about clearwire) and they swore to me up and down cincinnati was actually better coverage, and when i got here, jesus its horrid. i guess there's a lot more "tower" sites here, but they won't listen to you about the elevation. i've called over 10 times, and there is just apparently no way to talk to anyone that has anything to do with getting messages to the actual network systems people. The problem here, cincinnati valley, is that this town is crazily hilly. strong signal down between the hills and at the hill tops but the 80% of the city that is actually ON a hill's slope gets zero signal, and its even worse on 4g. the highways are the only place with reliable service. Verizon has solid service everywhere, and t-mobile is the best national here. Cincinnati bell is amazing as they have a transmitter on every light post and telephone pole in both counties, but they have horrible roaming agreements and plans if you leave the city with any regularity.
All of us with sprint love it except for the actual coverage, which makes it embarrassing to try and show off sprints greatness. The biggest problem is Sprint doesn't seem to understand how elevation works with these 7 hills and mini-mountains and thinks its a flat city like the midwest, and just covers in downward cones from their cell transmitter sites. ATT also seems to have this problem.
In cincinnati, verizon is solid coverage, T-Mobile is awesome, better than verizon. And the stupid cinicnnati bell is the best. ATT and Sprint are retarded for not utilizing local knowledge and input with their deployment here. I'm as close to being fed up as I can without switching. I'm right on the line. now, not only am i upset and frustrated, but i'm worried about roaming data overages or termination. i just use my phone for tv, directv nfl, radio, hell, i use my phone for media more than my tv, just under 5gigs a month, which is the main reason i still don't seriously consider switching. thank god for wifi @work.
So, i'd recommend Tmobile for national, and i'm weary of cincinnati bell but maybe its ok for you. Verizon gets a lot of minor complaints where i work, and their thunderbird sucks compared to the evo 4g, but they have strong lte 4g here. stay away from AT&T.
good luck!!

What all do I need to do to my phone to sell it?

Gone to both the FCC and BBB about this issue.

I asked this in the razr form, but I got nailed. Verizon markets this phone to death and when I have have been on the phone with them calls it "there best phone". I am on my 2nd phone and 2nd sim card. They will not take this one back.
What should I do? What can I do help!!!

Edit: Ok I guess not. I guess I need to ask for a new phone some how. I don't think they will take this one back.
How much do rez's go for?
Thanks
Edit: full data use:
January: about 30Gb ( Unlimited LTE was cool as mess at the time, but droped a lot. )
February: 89Gb ( Internet was bad)
March: 54Gb ( Internet was still bad, but got it fixed.)
So far: 35GB and it just ended. ( I uploaded a lot of thing's with it. When working that is)
More: So I have not even used 50mb, not gb MB and this happened:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9KuhIivbm4
The end: Well I guess using 90gb throttle's you forever on Verizon and now I will have to keep my month to month line on AT&T. I will just wait it out and end it at the end of the 2 years. oh well I can live with it.
Thread is done, Mods lock this thread down. It has turned into a flame fest and I will take full hit for this.
just an update to say it's been fixed, no more 500kbs every 24hours.
Sorry to all for thinking I was "throttled", but I looked all over the internet: Xda,youtube, verizon forums, and more. I could not find any one with the same issue. And yes I should be called stupid, a jerk, and the list go's on.
I was hard headed about this issue and I was not right.
And even if I had been "throttled" I got what was coming any ways. I did not think it was fair to be throttled for is long as I was, but I have had a weekend to think about it. Any way just happy to have this fixed and I don't be using 50+GB a month any more, thats for sure.
Any way sorry for being a bit of a jerk and no I don't think you will just "forgive" me or anything, but I when I know I have been a jerk. The lest I could do is say your right and I was not.
Edit again: It has come back so now I went to the BBB and the FCC.
If I remember correctly, Verizon does not throttle 4G - they will only throttle 3G and only if you're in their "top 5%" which really just means you've consumed more than 5GB of data on the current billing cycle..
Looks like maybe you're either in an area with terrible 4G coverage, or you should have just gotten a Rezound and not a RAZR
No. Unless you're on 3G. And even then, probably not.

there actually HAS been 4g throttling cases. if you use a **** ton of data on an unlimited plan they will throttle you. a guy on rootzwiki i think the galaxy nexus forums, had data throttling on 4g and the customer service lady said it was because he was in the top 5% of users :/

I should have went for the rezound, but my verizon bud pushed the razr and I said ok.
Now I guess I got a crap phone. Do I need to buy a new phone? (Rezound)

My internet was bad. I got mad at this when I got 600kbs, so I started uploading youtube videos with it and now I sit at 30GB.
Yeah I'm not sure - they state clearly that they do not throttle 4G, but we all know that what they say and what they do aren't always the same thing. But the one thing I can tell you is that I get great 4G speeds and coverage on my Rezound, but I am not a huge data user. I have an unlimited plan, and tether my tablet to my phone everyday, but I generally only use between 2 and 3GB per month, so I've never gotten up into the range where throttling would be a problem. Honeslty I keep it in 3G mode 99% of the time because its fast enough for what I do (mostly just RDP connections, Google Music, light web browsing and Google Maps) and the battery lasts much longer.
look around the forums. iirc there is a data throttle remover. I never owned a razr so I don't know if one was developed for that phone.
Verizon is NOT throttling 4G, unless they've changed their policies. And even then, they don't throttle 3G like AT&T throttles. It's not based on individual users, it's based on tower load, so whoever made up this "5%" thing needs to get their story straight if they're going to make sh*t up.

To optimize our network, we manage data connection speeds for a small subset of customers – the top 5% of data users with 3G devices on unlimited data plans – and only in places and at times of 3G network congestion.
It's not about the top 5%, it's about place and time. You could be 5% and never get throttled because the towers you use aren't congested.
my internet seemed slow when i was at 1.9gbs-2gbs and then when i went over 2gbs it was fine. idk bug or something.

No, I haven't because I have a 4G phone, and so do you, which means it doesn't apply to us. You're not being throttled.

Data Throttling?

So with Verizon now having the share plans to eliminate the unlimited plans, thus squeezing more money out of us, I agree with the many on here that say they can have my unlimited when they pry it from my cold dead fingers. So with that being said, I used to be big on swapping roms with my Incredible, but never really messed with my Rezound other than upgrading to the Global RUU, unlocking and rooting it so I can tether wirelessly. Now that an LTE tower was recently put near my house, I can get 4g speeds. I want to cancel my broadband in the house save a bundle and just tether through my phone. I know with my Dinc, there were many Roms with data throttling removed or zip files out there to flash that could remove it. So my question is does VZW still throttle, and if they do, is there a data throttle removal for the Rezound out there?
They don't throttle 4g connections. At least that's what the rep told me. Theres no way to remove throttling from the phone. Vzw does it on there end according to congestion on the tower your connected to using your esn. And as soon as the tower is not so congested you get bandwidth back. But the rep told me if you have a 4g phone you don't get throttled, even if your only connected to 3g. That's coming from a rep over the phone, so take it for what its worth.

Texas is right.
VZW doesn't throttle 4g, and you have to be one of the top 10% of heavy users.
Also, throttling is done on their end, nothing to do with the phone.
Yeah I only get throttled in the day when I'm downloading massive files. I have downloaded 15gb torrents at night before and Verizon doesn't throttle me.

I would like to know why Verizon throttles 3G but not 4G. I know I use a heck of a lot more data when I finally got 4G in my area and being unlimited you think they would want to stop me at some point being I can not go over a number for them to add additional charges to me.

It's related to the terms of their FCC license. There's lots of restrictions placed on their ability to restrict use of the 700MHz band they use for LTE because of the terms of their license. They also can't restrict tethering on LTE, though they can still do so on 3G.

One of the apps that's rumored to be related is an app called TetheringGuard.apk and its in system app I believe.

Anyway to stay 4G in a 4G LTE area?... Let me explain why...

Ok. So I have always just had 4G in my area until recently. I have the APN info to run unthrottled. I have an unlimited data plan and I use my phone for tethering my computer and my xboxs at home. Since it is now LTE now my UNTHROTTLED, APN switches on and off randomly and eventually knocks me back to the regular ATT PTA APN. I want to find a way to lock my phone to 4G only so I can stay on the unthrottled APN so I can at least have 2mbps instead of being throttled down to 500kbps a quarter of the way through the month. Which makes it practically impossible to play xbox games online or stream a movie, Download anything is a headache now. The worst part about it is even the LTE maxes out at 5mbps where I live anyways so it's not like I'm getting 21+ like I do in other LTE areas. Is there anyway around this or should I invest in an Android 4G only phone and just use it while at home? Thanks for any help that someone could give me.
Excessive data use always gets throttled. No way around it. I'm not saying "excessive use", at&t is.
They easily track usage by your sim card and IEMI, so APN settings don't matter.
Actually.....
Actually. With the APN I had it never got throttled. I was doing 46gigs+ a month. Never ever got throttled until it knocked me up to LTE and made my phone skip the un throttled APN.

46GBs? It's about time you did get throttled. 4G and LTE APN's should both be throttled APNs. Try the 3G APN.
I agree, save some bandwidth for the rest of us. I don't know how you haven't had your account closed down yet, or why you weren't throttled using a particular APN for so long. Must have just been network goofiness, because like rangercaptain said, that's not how AT&T tracks you for throttling anyway.
Edit: Moving to a 3G APN shouldn't matter either. Nor would being on a 2G or 3G-only tower. No matter what I'm connected to, I'm still limited to 5GB/month before getting throttled, because that's where grandfathered LTE plans are set. Doesn't matter if I'm actually using LTE or not, it's per-plan.
46+ Gb? Really???? Unbelievable! No, really. Unbelievable. You must mean 4.6 Gb because you'd be turned off, or at least you'd be getting communications from your carrier. I think either you are telling stories or you don't really know what you are talking about.
Johnus is 100% correct for AT&T. You get 5 Gb unthrottled per unlimited plan. Doesn't matter if you consume that 5 Gb using LTE, 4G, 3G, or string and soup cans.
I'm serious. I was getting months of 46 and more gigs without being throttled using one specific APN. The weird thing is now that yesterday I cut my phone on and all my APNs were gone except the default. They don't mess with me because the last time they tried to take me off unlimited for tethering I caused a big scene and kept on getting my call transfered up to a higher and higher management denying the fact that I did it and threatened them with a lawsuit. I already have a FCC complaint set up against them for throttling since it was never notified of agreed to a change in my plan. I was using a 4G APN that had what looked like corporate **** on it because I to this day can't find the info I had that I put in to get away with it. Now that it's LTE now it cuts 4G to completely off to 4G not allowing me to stay online longer than 15mins before it shuts down. That's all erased somehow now. My tethering file is deleted and I use wifitether app to do my tethering and have not been caught while tethering since I did that over 6months ago and for 6months I have been using about 50g a month

I guess they won.
It's far from over. I'm over 6gigs now and not throttled. Since using the tweakker APN. And I have been told if you file an FCC complaint they will let you run wide open once it gets filed with them. Usually take a month or two. They have so many lawsuits pending right now they can not deal with another.

..... And in my area, I assure you that my data usage is not effecting any of you. I live 30miles outside of Memphis TN. In the middle of nowhere. A year ago my phone only picked up in one spot in my entire house. The city is so small they banned any towers for going up because of the fear of radiation. I live around a bunch of ignorant rednecks that use Walmart prepaid phones and the only Internet they know of is Hughes Net and the local library.

Where can I find a full ATT APN list?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
Really not sure I can take anything you say as serious. That said, if you get anywhere with you supposed FCC filing, you'd be the first. The issue has already been tested and AT&T is on firm ground.
This is how you can take me seriously. That shows my data usage.

Gonna post this months data usage with my Internet speed.. It never shows a tether is being used. It is unexplainable by looking at the phone info where the data is using. Which is also exactly what ATT gets, they have no clue where I'm using so much data.

My apologies. I gotta admit, the proof is in the pics. I know that ATT would normally go ballistic about this so I don't really understand why you're getting away with it. They really don't care what you use the data for. Normally, all they care about is how much data you've used in a month. You are getting away with murder, my man. Good for you!
It's because they have threatened me in the past. I threatened back and they backed off. But it was before I deleted the tether file and used wifi tether app. They busted me for tethering now they can't. Can't tell what I'm using it for. It's like they try to throttle me at certain times. Randomly now that I have LTE coming thru at my home. I was wondering how many others have figured this out. I guess it is just that I threatened to put a lawsuit on them.
