64GB micro SDXC cards formatted to exFAT confirmed fully working in S3 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone!
Had a couple of hours hands-on time with the S3 today, wanted to let everyone know that exFAT support is present and working, and 64GB cards work fine (if anyone still doubts that they work on all Androids with card slots).
Will have some more info up soon too

Awesome!

S3 easily, the One X has better design, looks and screen (although these are all subjective), but the S3 overpowers it everywhere for functionality.

what sandisk micro sd card as it? SanDisk Mobile Ultra Android microSDXC UHS-I Card 64 GB with Adapter or SanDisk Mobile Ultra / 64GB / Micro SD XC Memory Card with Adapter / Class 6 why the hell is the class 10 lower than the class 6?

Hells ya. My 64gb Sdxc just came in the mail today.
Can't wait to pop it into the S3!

I'm 99% certain these are the same item. You will notice that the one that is double the price is sold by a third party seller, not Play. I've noticed that Amazon also sometimes have the same item listed twice with different prices. They even had this microsd card listed twice with different prices, both sold by Amazon. Look here scroll down to Amazon's own price of £164.98 and then look here. Same item from Amazon £49.69.
Anyway I've ordered mine from Play at £44.99.

Sandisk also only makes one 64GB MicroSDXC card, atleast according to their site

thanks for the information, always good to have a on-hand test of these informations too

what is the advantage of formatting a sdcard as exFat compared with fat32 (vfat?) or ext4

SanDisk sdxc 64gb formatted to exfat will not work on Android 4.2.2. roms.

Aosp doesn't support exfat. The samsung roms do though

Micro SD card help

Hey guys, I ordered my 32GB Prime, super excited about it, and I want add another 32GB memory card but I don't know much about the different classes. Is there a huge difference between them? Thanks for any advice.

From Wiki:
The Speed Class Rating is the official unit of speed measurement for SD cards. The class number guarantees a minimum write speed as a multiple of 8 Mbit/s (1 MB/s).
Classes
Class 2 - 2 MB/s
Class 4 - 4 MB/s
Class 6 - 6 MB/s
Class 10 - 10 MB/s

Basically the Class you "need" will depend on the kind of data you will store and how do you plan to use it... For storing and editing plain docs I wouldn't mind having a low class SD, but it would make it harder for your TF to write other files as HD Videos as fast as it should.
More info here:
Wiki Article
Just make sure it's a Sandisk micro SD in my opinion. Their C4 cards tend to be a lot better and more reliable than most peoples C10 cards.

Would be interesting if it did. But dang, for that much $$ you might as well buy the 64gb Prime...and then some.

Well I'm not saying I would buy one of those, the cost is prohibitive, just wondering if it was even an option.
you can get a class 10 for $40-60, so even if the Prime cannot use a class 10, why not buy it to future proof the purchase and then when something comes along that can use a class 10, you have it.
Iam looking for a well rated, 32gb class 10.
Hopefully it will support microSDXC, so when the prices of them start to come down we can extend the memory massively!
Just format the sdxc with a file system the Prime understands. sdxc is just using exFAT. I'd format it with FAT32 or NTFS (if the Prime supports it).

The SDXC card was tested on the TF101. No problems there. I'm pretty sure it will work on the Prime as well.

What an horrible article full of wrong facts...
Nobody knows if SDXC will really work but it's almost sure it will.
And why the heck do you guys think the Prime won't support class 10 cards?! Even my old Desire HD supports them with no problems
Wow. That article is full of fail. Its said that the TFP had a 5 Mega pixel camera. I wouldn't trust much in it.

From what I understand, SDXC just added the exFAT requirement for the for it to be SDXC. From what I originally read awhile ago, sdhc hardware will support 2TB cards. There are a lot of people using the 64GB MicroSDXC and 128GB SDXC in devices at said that they only support SDHC cards. They just formatted them to a file system the device can understand.

Yeah, for "now" 32GB is perfect for me.
I mean right now I have all my music on Google Music, so that saves me approx 16GB of data, and I do have a few Media Hub movies, so 32GB is spacious right now.

Yeah, I've never seen one under $120. Considering that's around three 32GB microSDHCs, I'm holding off--not that I have any trouble filling a 32GB card, but still.

That's the cheapest I have seen them thus far. Wonder how fast it'll be before it significantly drops in price. So far, the 32GB ones have dropped a fair amount in price.
I'm gonna upgrade to a 32GB one from 16GB once I purchase my Note.

International version was reported to support 128GB, but there isn't a microSD that size yet, so the test was done with a regular SD card and an adaptor:

Yeah 32GB are definitely at a good price point; I bought an excellent SanDisk class 4 from Newegg for $33, and could have saved a few bucks with a less reputable brand.
I haven't seen prices drop at all on microSDXC cards in the last four months. I'm not holding my breath at this point that they'll be priced competitively with smaller cards any time soon.

Have you ever seen anyone selling a 128GB microSDXC? I don't think there is any technological limitation of the phone that would prevent your phone from reading even larger cards, as long as you can format them with a supported filesystem, and the SDXC standard allows up to 2TB. The limitations are just based on what's available.

That's pretty cool, thanks for the link. I'm not quite brave/crazy enough to clear a space in the back of my phone to install a full-size SD card though.
I got the same 64gb sandisk microsdxc and it doesnt work for me...phone wont recognize it. It's formatted into FAT32 and my HTC Evo 4G and PC can see the card and read/write to it just fine.
What file system do you have on that card?
64GB was 100 at bestbuy but they sell out quick on the site.
You have to put it in the phone and format it in the phone itself

Note does not see sd card contents
Having a little trouble with the external card being seen by the Note. I have a samsung 32 GB, class 10. I have pics loaded, ringtones and apks on it. Pics and apks are in the root of the card. Ebooks are in a folder called ebooks. Ringtones are in a folder- Forget how labeled, but copied from my infuse card. They work correctly.
My app installer does not see the apks. Gallery does not see the pics, but the ringtones are selectable by the settings thru contacts or setting sounds. STock ebook reader does not see my ebooks that are in a folder "ebooks".
With the file explorer on the note was able to open the sd card and install the apks manually.
How do I get the note to see the stuff on the external card?

i use a Sandisk 64GB Class 6 Standard SD in my dock, works like a champ. cant afford a micro 64gb lol
very nice! thx for the info
I use a 64gb SanDisk Micro SDXC card in my Prime and currently have 28.8gb of the 59.46gb available free. I have music, videos and emulator roms on there.
I don't think I will be needing to put a card in the docks sd card slot yet but IF I ever do then another 64gb would be going in
I have a class 10 64GB in the Dock and a class 6 64GB MicroSD in the Prime
I had to reformat them to get them recognized and they have run fine since...
Scored the 64GB SanDisk MicroSD
http://www.buy.com/prod/sandisk-mob...nded-capacity-microsdxc-1-card/226590490.html $110 shipped, got mine a little cheaper on sale.
I run a Pretec 64GB Class 16 SD card in my dock that I bought from either Newegg or Amazon for ~$75 and I am very pleased. I've had it for 5+ weeks now with no trouble and many transfers on/off of it. About 2 weeks ago I formatted it NTFS and I now get write speeds from 16-24 mb per second! I was a bit nervous when I purchased it as I had never really heard of the Pretec brand before but, I have absolutely no complaints. I watch my 720p .mkv movies from it and hardly ever have a stutter. In my Prime run an HP 32gb Class 10 MicroSD and it also functions very well. Both are highly recommended.
I use 2 Sandisk 64gb mobile ultra microsd's in both the tab and dock. I have them both formatted as extFAT due to the size. The tab reads all 59gb's of the micro on both cards.

Hi,
I am new to the site and the 64gb XC1 class card. I purchased one and tried to reformat it to fat32 and was unable on several systems. I could not get it to be recognized on my phone or the prime. Any special direction on what needs to be done in order to get it accomplished? I updated windows 7 to the required KB fixes and still nothing. Even thou my HP had an XD slot, not sure if that is different than than the XC; which probably is.
Thanks, appreciate any response

Format exFAT or NTFS. Fat32 does not support that size of drive and will also limit you to a maximum single file size of 4gb. Many HD movies can exceed this easily.

Thank you so much for posting this deal! I surfed through my wallet and through all of the left over best buy gift cards I had I ended up with a free 64gb microsdxc! This was an amazing deal to begin with, but you just cant beat that!
Nice, not to bad at all. Glad you got one!
Don't forget to reformat the card in your phone - or else it won't work.
I've had mine for 4 months I think? It's great - I love it. I won't be able to live with less memory ever again - which will be a problem with most of the next gen phones seemingly going away from memory cards.

I'm not sure, but I don't think so yet (64gb).
This link shows benchmark pics of a class 10 16gb vs. SanDisk class 6 64gb, and the SanDisk is actually faster than the class 10 card.

I wish I knew what brand that class 10 card was. It's garbage. I just ran that tool thrice and my average read/write was 10.9/4.9MB/s respectively with a Class 4 SanDisk 32MB. That said, I'm also pretty pissed I paid 65 dollars for this card when I could have gotten better speed and more powahhhh for not much more if I waited. FML.
In case anyone doesn't know, the class rating on these cards is the minimum write speed the card will achieve, provided you're not copying a movie from a USB 1.0 PC or something else that would bottleneck it.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA
To be fair you can't go with the read/write on a card unless you test empty. My 32GB card surpasses the Class 10 it is if empty but get near full and it' just below a Class 6. So the tests mean absolutely nothing unless you are testing with an almost full card. It's time I moved to a 64GB card my 32GB is too full with the games on it.. LOL
Wrong.

[Q] Best 32gig or 64gig microsd card to get?

Do you guys recommend a highspeed microSD card to use for gaming? I heard i could use a app called foldermount to move games to the external sdcard. Thanks in advance. =)
I don't see how a faster SD card would affect gaming on your phone. I personally picked up a Samsung 64GB Pro microSDXC Extreme Speed (UHS-1) Class 10 Memory Card and have had no issues with it. I just felt like getting a Samsung card for a Samsung phone seemed like a smarter fit. My Razr Maxx had some SanDisk SD card that never had any issues, so I guess the most important factor would be reliability and cost.
