New AT&T User - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Hey guys!
I just received my Galaxy Note from AT&T (previously a T-Mobile G2 user), and am wondering about custom ROMs.
I used a MIUI ROM on my G2 with T-Mobile, but am more interested in ICS and the international capabilities of the Note (Premium suite, apps, etc). Do we not get those apps?
Are there any custom ROMs you guys would recommend for a new user?
Thanks!

Get CWM installed - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1586223
This is the most stock ICS (an a good solid ROM to start with):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1664980
This is the best (IMHO) of the ICS ROMs. It's due for an update very shortly - but it's the only one to really take advantage of the capability of ICS to handle tablet mode:

There's no reason to say anything bad about anyone's rom. If you like apps rom, then say just that. Theres no reason to point out what you think is horrible scrolling. They're both excellent roms and both are very smooth. Go to the threads and read up. Or better yet, try them and see what fits your needs the best.

I understand. I'm not new to ROMs, but I find it easier to ask for opinions than to try flashing endless ROMs. I'm having a hard time believing rooting and all is even worth it. But I'm hoping some of you veteran Note users' will provide me with a little more incentive to flash or keep stock.
I'm sure he meant no disrespect to the developers, and hopefully they take no offense.

Your choice but my opinion is as follows. You have a great device with capabilities far beyond those which it was sold with(GB), so you could stay with your awesome device and never know its "full" potential. Adversely, you could unleash the beast with a little research and gumption... Think portable wireless hotspots and ease of use modifications and custom works allowing you to customize your device. With stock gb it generally takes 2 to 4 more steps to achieve the same goal in custom GB. Same with ICS... These are my opinions and individual experience may vary... Ultimately its up to you how excited about your device you get, and how much research you do to ensure a great experience.

Yeah I ended up trying a few, and nothing seemed stable enough. We won't have to wait too much longer for ICS and premium suite I am sure!

I say if you're fine with GB go with unofficial rom. Best laid out in my opinion and with holokernel incredibly fast and smooth. For ics I say forget about your s pen and try cm9. I missed notes at the beginning but with how fluid everything is and problem free of a build this is I try not to think of that plastic pen jammed into my phone and just enjoy ics for what it is and what it should be on any android phone without all the little touches manufacturers throw in trying to make their phone a special snowflake in an industry of special individual snowflakes. Just my two cents anyhow

Gingerbread ROM on Galaxy SIII

Howdy,
For testing purposes I want to load a pre-ICS ROM on my GalaxyS3. I need the flash built in that got dropped with ICS.
Has anyone tried this? If so, what are recommended ROMs?
If no one has done this, what ROMs are closest to what the S3 runs and would stand the greatest chance of working?
Thanks,
Joe
Presume this is a test to see how fast you can brick your SGS3 .

This is I think the 4th "can I put gingerbread on x" thread I have seen on xda, pretty sure its the second in the S3 forum and also there were two in the gnex forums if my memory serves me right.
As you can imagine they were met with complete and WARRANTED hostility.

to be equally fair, i'm in the same boat. i had a captivate for a while, loved the gb roms i flashed constantly to find my favourite. bought an s2 and absolutely love the phone. i hard bricked my previous s2, i dont think i had the right kernel, something i did was for a non canadian version of the s2. after i sold that one i bought another brand new s2. the s3 was around for a little while at this point but my girlfriend has a galaxy nexus and her sister an s3 and i just dont like the way ics and jb look, feel and operate. it felt like switching from windows to a mac after using windows for years. i would go to close a window and the 'x' was in the upper left and not right like windows.
its a personal opinion, i'm sure in many ways firmwares past gb are better in many quantifiable ways, but i just dont like em. not to mention the stupid physical home button like some loser iphone. i love the 4 backlit buttons that samsung uses on many devices like the blu ray player i have. it's just awesome.
anyway, long story short - is there any other demand worth warranting a dev to make a gb rom for phones past that version of android?
in closing, think of the amount of roms out there for the captivate which are based on froyo people still use. gb ics and even jb roms are available but many people still prefer the look and feel of froyo.
anyway, long story short - is there any other demand worth warranting a dev to make a gb rom for phones past that version of
Got a couple of thousand to spare might interest a dev otherwise not likely .

Looking to pick up a gnote1

I am going to be cutting my ties to big red and am going to get a gnote1 from Swappa or somewhere (attention version) and go to straight Talk. I have read through lots of threads and I think with the gnote2 coming soon I would just get a great deal on the gnote1.
So my question is to the people or even the developers. Would you stick with the 1 or go to the 2. Will Samsung support this device for awhile?

Swappa has them rooted for less than 4
Sent from my Incredible 2 using xda premium
And they are all over craigslist for less than $200. Use a little common sense here. Once the Note2 is released many Devs and Recognized Contributors will move on. That is a fact of life here on XDA. It has and will always be this way. So development will slow but there will be development. Samsung has spoken that there should be a JB release for this phone. Not much more that can be said.
Galaxy Note
Samsung will at least support Jelly Bean - past that, I don't know. That being said, it's a great phone with a lot of potential, could definitely last you a while. I'm not sure when the Note 2 is coming out, but I've seen rumors of an Oct 24 release. When that day hits, you might see a larger drop in note 1 prices.
Thank you for your responses. I ended up getting one. I am loving it so far. For what I have read there seems to be lots of emphasis on kernels and "modems"?
I am familiar with flashing roms and flashing kernels for a rom. But not modems?
I just downloaded cm9 so well see how it goes.
Again thank you for your responses
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
If you have no issues with your phone or data connection then there is no reason to flash a modem. If it is working, don't mess with it. Kernels are really only needed for another level of customization or to overclock. If the custom ROM you install does well then again feel fortunate and leave it alone. If there are issues then others in the ROMs thread and even the Dev will recommend kernels to try.

Verizon Galaxy Note II Development...

I’ve been curious as to why development and rom builds have been so slow to come to the Verizon Galaxy Note II? I look at other carriers and see that they have a more extensive collection of ROMS available and was wondering why?
The reason for thisi is our devs have currently been working out keeping unlocked bootloaders on the latest update for some unfortunate people, And we are just getting started with the roms. FOr the best roms, let the devs work on their own pace.

From past experience, I've had a phone with many roms but most of them had their share of bugs which drove me away. I have used Scott's roms before the note 2 and his attention to detail and simplicity is unsurpassed, we are very fortunate to have him. We also are lucky to have CM builds pumping out as my former device waited over a year for just the beta.

Really most OTA ROMS are not all that different.. Sure some have more options etc.. The real fun comes when AOSP is stable..
We just got official CM nightly's as of yesterday.. While there are a few things to work out with kinks here and there, the real fun has just begun...
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 2
It will only improve. Verizon was late to the party with their variant and locked out the bootloader. Nobody is going to develop much on a device with locked bootloader. Also, it is true that devs have been busy helping us noobs.
I didn't think development would even be this fast. This is the best phone on the best carrier, so I assume development will continue. I am sure many people have a GS3 already, so won't be moving to this platform.
Speed up development by donating to a dev.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 2
Didn't someone just release a mod that a allows cross carrier roms?! Not to mention aosp is finally getting solid. Patience is a virtue, things are taking off.
I personally think the development on this device has been great. Better than I expected really, given the way Verizon tried to chase away users from this device with stupid things like the branding on the home button. At the end of the day I'm just happy with what we have. Could have been a lot worse without Adam.
If your that bored flash some N7105 base roms. Just don't derp and flash the radios for the other carriers. I am running SkyNote right now.

I think one of the reason why is lack of stock functionality. The varieties of AOKP, Baked, CM, AOSP, Miui roms have been extremely popular and successful on other Google devices(varieties of these roms account for more than 50% of entire roms), but apparently not many people demand those roms on Galaxy Note2 because of lack of stock functionality...such as SPen, page buddy, other good motion functions, and etc, etc. I used to be a huge fan of AOKP roms while I was owning Galaxy Nexus, but after switching to GNote2, I never looked back. I wanted more of Samsung experience rather than Google.

I agree with this. I want to keep most of the stock functionality with the ability to mod. Hence why I love beans rom.

Lack of development?

I'm just curious as to why Verizon note 2 is lacking so much in the ROM development side of things compared to other carriers. Is it solely because we are still only 4.1.1? Just thought it would be interesting to see peoples input!

Only a quarter of a year ago....And even in the thread you linked there were whiny people complaining that someone else at some point had asked the question. Lighten up.
Didn't mean to step on any toes or anything. There just hasn't been hardly any development on here lately so I thought I would get something going. Trust me if I had the time, and the abilities like these developers do, I would throw my hat in the ring. But at my current level of (lowly) expertise I should probably leave that up to the people that know what they're doing

Yet Scott just released a zip that will allow us to flash t mobile, and att roms. Give me a moment, and I will find the thread, and post it here. If you want to see a dead phone, go look at the rezound. The phone is barely a year and a half old, and it is marching into obscurity. The droid incredible has more action. These threads aren't going to produce more roms, just bad attitudes. Try playing with all of the mods we have, and theme it to whatever you want it to be. Morphology, Xposed, and a slew of others. Troll the other carriers threads, and pull mods that you want. That is all we can ask for, unless you are paying the devs a paycheck.

Which have you tried? Both Jedi and Jelly Beans are both great. I am using the mod in my sig right now as I like that it keeps the samsung allshare features working.
With a combination of Jelly Beans, Widget Locker, and a theme you could pretty much get anything done you want. Pick up the odd app or mod here and there to fill in the gaps.
By the way, if you want to give 4.1.2 a go Jedi is running that. It is great if you don't need the Samsung services.

I think this has been my main take away from discussions, and browsing the other forums. Quantity in this case definitely does not equal quality. I don't see the point in having 10 options if only 2 or 3 are viable. However, that is just my opinion.
Most source built ROMs (AOSP) are going to have issues, whether major or minor, and are much easier to customize as you're dealing with XML and java. However, the lack of TW features keep people away from them.
With TouchWiz ROMs, you don't lose any functionality, but there is only so much that smali hacking can do. Most of this is just the time consuming nature of trying to hack a ROM via smali only. You could get everything in your favorite source built ROM if you wanted to take the time to do so. But, given that this is a for-fun thing and not a money making venture, developers aren't likely to take that amount of time if they wouldn't use it themselves.

I would definitely prefer a few quality roms with great support than 27 versions of cyanogenmod that are 98% the same. Beans, MeanBean, Tweaked, Jedi, Elemental...that should be plenty to keep the crack flashers happy.

What is a rom really? To me It's just a better version of what the manufacturer builds. The stuff is basically the same for the most part with the addition of tweaks for better battery performance etc... That are added by the dev. The thing that makes a rom different are the things like themes and different looking batteries etc..., so why have 100 roms that essentially are the same? I would prefer to have 1 rom that performs well with a bunch of themes and mods hence i only use meanbean and love the real icon theme, or morphology. Mean bean is a great rom and with pbj kernel even better.

To each their own ya know. My reason personally for rooting and unlocking is personalization, which is why I tend to end up at aosp more often than not. There's plenty of options and stuff to mix around. The only reason why I made a topic about it was because of the extensive development on other carriers. Not because I'm not pleased with what's here, I just have a hard time staying on one ROM for long

stock android firmware has evolved into something so much better than it use to be...im still on beans build 2 because it flatout works and has all the things I need. Its hard to develop when stock touchwiz is so good out of the box. the only real thing that touchwiz needs is themeing. beans takes the cake on that. aosp was nice on my gs1 because it trimmed the fat and made the ol single core with limited ram run smooth. these quad core beasts are designed to handle bloat and a festure rich skins(touchwiz), so aosp does not have the appeal and performance advantage it use to. however for the folks that
keep this device well past tthe point verizon quits supporting it, then aosp will shine...simply for the fact it will bring the latest android offerings and keep the note 2 alive.
I think it had A LOT to do with TW and Spen/Note 2 specific features. Nobody really wants to lose them, and there's only so many ways to mess with TW. There's plenty of AOSP/KP stuff but look at the involvement compared to TW roms... It's there, but not as much... My take on it anyway.
Edit: Yeah, what Droidstyle said, lol.

Don't forget that Samsung has promised an update to 4.2 for the Note II sometime this year. No real timetable, but when it comes it will be a shot in the arm for development.
Myself, I bounce between Beans ROM and CyanogenMod. The S-Pen features are what generally keep me hopping, but both are good.

with your experience on XDA you should know, what is going to be an excellent ROM for somebody else, may not be for you. I don't know what kind of user you are.
not sure what your last phone was, but we have quite a bit of variety here.
here is my rundown and I am sure you know basics
ICS 4.0.4...........super stable by know beings update official updates have gone beyond
JB 4.1.2...........Touchwiz based pretty darn close to stock (debloated) and DAMN stable. only a couple out there but rock solid. some theming and mods out there for personal touches. not many updates needed
JB 4.2..............these would be AOSP, AOKP and CM based ROMS. lots of customizing. basically 3 ROM's in 1. with bells and whistles are some shortcomings. random reboots being the biggest flaw. many have success using alternate KERNALS built in conjunction with certain ROM's, giving options for OCing and UVing. different tweaks here and there can better chances for success. lots of updates on these.
JB 4.3..............still early in the game. smooth but working out a lot of kinks right now. its coming along
just an honest everyday user here giving an honest opinion m my experience here. folks are great funny and very helpful and a LOT of talent in development here.
good luck my friend. I am sure others will be along to correct me on SOMETHNG

Oops I didn't lol from the way he worded that he had just gotten the i717 I thought he was new lol if ire talking about daworship guy then yeah..I am pretty new to XDA community but I love reading all u guys threads cus some are funny and others are very helpful...we are all like a family cus we all help each others out to solve issues but daworship has being here longer then me n with all do respect I don't think he should ask a question like that but we support and answer politely...I do think he should try skeleton key but it's confusing cus it's in the i717 thread but yet it's for tmo users...unless im wrong...correct me if I am lol

Skeleton key is in the i717 thread because there are a bunch of us that use the i717 (AT&T version) and unlock it and use a Tmobile sim/service. It works great. So, he made that ROM for us.

I dunno..."great" is different for everyone.
Some people love Padawan, Blackstar....
Others love 4.2 ROM's, or ICS rom's
It depends what you want in a ROM. I'm using Skeleton Key, because I like ICS a lot. It works just fine for my needs. It is an excellent ROM, as are all the others. It just like I said...depends what YOU want.

I'm in love with PACMan ROM. Padawan would get more love if it wasn't so laggy on my Note

you obviously have not read p. 355- 378 in thread then. which deals with the ONLY issue folks have had with that ROM. with those settings, my phone runs orgasmic.
always read, read, read
not my intention to be a D#@K. too many people are wanting someone else to do the work for them lately. when basically it is what they themselves do to their phone, not what somebody else does it. so why would you not want to inform yourself and understand.
good luck
