[Q] Ramdisk on Archos 101G9 turbo 250GB - Gen8, Gen9, Gen10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I bought an Archos because I thought I could install Linux. I have a problem with the ubuntu.img which is 1.9GB and the /data is only 1.5 at its max (800mb after installing some Android applications). The question I have is how can I increase the /data partition? Does it come from the 250GB, if so, how come it is so small? If not, where do I get that space from? I saw some postings on how to increase but the procedure does not work for this particular model: Archos 101 G9 1.5gh 250GB hdd. If somebody needs a tester please contact me.

...
I have the same problem and I can´t figure it out!
The flashversions don´t have these problem, because they have all of these space, but the HDD version, just 1,5Gb... In another thread I try to figure out how to mount the HDD for more app-space, but the HDD is slow and it would be very inefficient, soo you should change the HDD to a SSD...
If there is any option without modifing the hardware let us know

Other Thread
This would be the other thread...
We´re trying to get more app storage at the HDD version!

You can't.

250GB is hdd storage, Android uses it to store your files only (videos, music, documents etc). Data partition (system files, apps, app data) is in flash memory which is much smaller.

[Q] Archos Partitions

Hello XDA forums,
Recently I installed Urukdroid 1.0RC2 on an A43 8GB model, and I noticed how my device only has up to 7GB of space. I was just wondering where the other 1GB is because I don't want to have wasted space sitting around doing nothing.
Thanks for your time.
This "problem" isnt a problem
its always the same: if they write 8 gb, there is formatted only 7-7.3 gb
look at your hdd on your computer
Hello and thanks for the quick reply.
Actually I do understand the deal with the 1024mb = 1gb, but are you sure that it is supposed to read 6.95 gb (that is what it says in Linux when connected)? I'm pretty sure it should more or less be around 7.4-7.7.
Sent from my A43 using XDA Premium App
Okey thats pretty much
hm.. than its because urukdroid's formatting
what did you select in urukdroid installation progress?
EDIT: You said thanks, psst... push the "Thanks"-Button don't hurt
@denwaotoko:
What do you think where the system itself is hostet?
Right it is on that 8GB internal memory.
It has 3 Partitions ( without Uruk ) which are for System, Data and Rest.
@fzelle correct.
as far as I know, the kernel splits the 8GB in two "virtual" devices which of one is 512 MB large and the other one 7,5 GB.
The first virtual device is /dev/block/mmcblk0 which contains rawfs (boot), swap, system and /data partition while the second (big!) virtual device is /dev/block/mmcblk1 and contains only one fat32 partition (internal storage)
so you only get 7,5 GB which in the end is about 7,x GiB formatted storage that can be used (don't have my A101IT with me so I can't give exact numbers)

Yes I do realize that, so is the 1gb of "lost" space just hidden?

Jap, exactly
We can be proud of the fact that android uses only little memory space,
Windows for example use 20 gb
Alright, I was just expecting that it would show up in a partition manager when connected to a Computer.

Nope,apparently not
Thank you for thanks

No, it doesn't because the device only shows /dev/block/mmcblk1 and mmcblk2 to the computer, where 1 is the internal flash (the last 7,5G of the internal mmc as I explained before) and 2 is the external microsd.

Can't uninstall developers edition from Archos 70

Hey guys, I'll be selling my Archos device and wanted to "clean it up" before it goes. In the Developers Edition Menu, I select "uninstall developer edition" and hit the power button, but it just returns me to the previous menu.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.
have you rebooted after "uninstalling" ?

Twice, but now I tried it again and the developers edition is no longer there... I would have expected some kind of prompt or something!
It's showing less than 6GB on my device TOTAL MEMORY - I guess I'll have to format it completely to get that back?
i think this is because of the root.img file (500MB uncompressed) the SDE installed on your internal storage. it contains Angstrom Linux which is installed together with the SDE. you can safely remove it

I don't think you understood. I have the 8GB Archos and the total memory should be just under 8gb, but it's showing 5.58GB Total Space and 2.39GB free - what happened to the "other" 2GB of space? I would imagine there's a partition somewhere (created by Urukdroid) that the regular archos OS isn't reading.
Ah ok, of course when you installed urukdroid, you lost a bit of space. A full reset should fix this.

[Q] Insufficient storage error?

Anyone having problems installing apps from market? I am getting an Insufficient storage error on ym Archos 80 g9 250gb and I still have a little over 200mb free out of the 1.5gb. It's only a 10mb app I am trying to install. Any advice? Thanks.
Same problem here. Reformated and now i have to root all over again. I dont know if i have to delete android kernel. Maybe that was taking up the space. How did you make out anyway?
I experienced this issue on an other device some time ago. On my HTC HD2 I was not able to install any more Apps when storage was at 35MB or below.
I assume that the Archos reserves about 200MB. Maybe for App Data or caches or such things.
I don't know if I'm right it's just what I'm guessing.

I agree
I do believe that is the case. My only option is to delete some files on the sd card because I'm 100% sure it's not all apk files and dalvik-cache. But I need some kind of program to show me which files is on internal storage and which files are on the HDD. I can't format because I have exams in two weeks so I have to use it to study. Any suggestions?
On the HDD model
the size of the system memory is 1.5 go

Yes but I'm saying that I have 200mb free out of the 1.5Gb in system memory. Is there any app to show me what files I have in my system memory?

[Q] Extending RAM

Is it possible to extend RAM in my Archos 80 G9? I'd prefer 1GB instead of 512 MB, I run out so often from available memory and the whole system stucks for long seconds because of this.
Thanks.
Unfortunately not. Tablets are not like desktops or laptops where you can simply add another stick of ram. They run off SOC's (System on a Chip) where everything is integrated onto 1 chip for convenience. There is no way to upgrade the ram chip on these.
You can add swap, but the performance isnt gonna be as good as 1 GB ram.

Yes you can...
But don't swap if you don't have HDD model... (Or swap on network or USB hard drive...)
Write cycles are too limited with flash, internal or not, memory and your tablet (or SD card if you swap on SD card) will wear out quickly!
I have a HDD model, but I don't know how to add swap...
Can anyone explain it?

First : You have to be root
You can do that with a few commands (in a shell script)
You can find scripts that can do that searching on this forum...
You can also download a Swapper on playstore (Swapper, swapper2 etc...).
Thanks everyone.
Great! I hope will work on my 101g9 250gb.
