Swiftkey 3 (keyboard) - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

To those of you sharks looking for the next best keyboard, this is it. I dl'd it yesterday to run a test drive and this thing is fast - but more importantly, flawless. i havent sent a mistyped txt all day (im a speed typer, but there is an option for precision typers too). I went back to the stock keyboard and it was fail-galore, but, of course, YMMV
-its NOT the same as the swiftkey keyboard in the Play Store. its BETTER
-it learns your typing style more effectively than others advertise, IMO, via social networking/past texts/emails (which ever you prefer)
-its got some pretty nice themes onboard
-its layout is pretty comfortable and doesnt take up space with useless buttons
-its free
here's an article attesting to it's prowess:
http://www.droiddog.com/android-blo...there/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=facebook
heres a direct dl link:
http://vip.swiftkey.net/sk3beta
EDIT: Out of beta! woohoo! If you owned swiftkey x, check it out cuz you get upgraded for free otherwise it's half off this first week on the Play Store

SwiftKey makes the best Android keyboard, period.
I've been using SwiftKey X for a long while, and loved it. The biggest problem I had was missing the space bar (I'm also a speed typer) and typing the letter b, or something, which it wouldn't autocorrect.
I installed the SwiftKey 3 beta last night, and it's phenomenal. It fixes that problem (in fact, try typing without pressing the spacebar and look at the autocorrect) and is overall even more responsive.

I also just downloaded this and while I don't have anything to compare it too other than the stock, I'm already amazed.
While allowing it to scan my emails, texts, and facebook to figure out my speech mannerisms is unnerving, the results are amazing!
It's like it's in my head. Of course, I'm an ex-blackberry user so I have to adjust to using the correction bar. I still want to type out all my words letter by letter. *rolls eyes at self*
But so far, an amazing keyboard.

Thanks for this. I bought SwiftKey but was digging the sense4 keyboard until I saw this. I love the cobalt skin.

You'll get updated to it; don't worry. I got SwiftKey X for free from SwiftKey 1. It'd be pretty unbelievable if they didn't give X users 3.

I'm a long time Swiftkeyer myself. Started using the original when it went Beta. Have used every version since.
My only gripe with Swiftkey, is the automatic space after using a period. My email address has a period in it and it is a bit annoying. Especially since you have to type your email like a gazillion times.

One problem I'm having with SwiftKey 3 is that they got rid of the distinct question mark button, and it seriously slows me down to have to long press a key.
Do any of y'all know if it's possible to bring the distinct key back?

Thanks for the share! I love Swiftkey and I glad that they finally have Korean language support (albeit beta) now. =)

Does the haptic work for y'all? I can't seem to get it to work. It's enabled in the string already.

Sure doesn't..

I just checked, and I found the haptic feedback to work with SwiftKey x.
I'll report this through their beta feedback.

haptic working fine for me. you mean while your type right? (just making sure). make sure you set the haptic feedback duration to at least ~20ms to notice it. i'm at 18ms and i like it, albeit it hiccups every now and then because im such a fast typer anything lower than about 15 wont work/is too short to notice

Works great now, thanks!
I also figured out my question mark issue from earlier: you can swipe horizontally across the period button. To the left right you'll get the question mark, and to the left, you'll get the explanation mark. Works wonderfully.
I just don't know why anyone would use any other keyboard.

Thanks so much for this! :-D

yeah it works. I had to turn up the duration of the feedback, and now it works fine. Only things is, if i mispell a workd incorrectly (especially a small word like "Hey") it wont auto correct it for me. it just leaves the misspelled word. I thought its supposed to correct it for ya LOL. Unless im missing something int he settings?

I'm totally new to this so I don't know what the behavior is supposed to be, but I noticed that the corrected word is usually offered as a choice for me to select above the keyboard.

Thanks for this. I had bought swiftkey for my OG evo but this works even better.

Flash?
I have been using Swift Key for at least a year on other phones and have been totally sold on the quality of this keyboard - I wanted to try the beta just to see what is different - but wasn't sure how to install -
I tried flashing and it failed - and there isn't an "AP" per se that i saw which I could install - so how do I install from the zip file you posted? Sorry if I sound like a noob but I am a little confused on how to install this -
I appreciate the help

after you click on the dl link i put in the first post, your browser (or phone) should automatically download the file. it'll say swiftkey3_beta-3(etc, etc).apk, so just move it onto your phone if it isnt already and, using any file explorer or in the notification bar, click on it and install like any other app

[REQ]Swype?

Hey everyone! I got my wife the shift 4g today and she fell in love with swype on my Epic so I got her into the beta, downloaded the installer and did all that jazz. Then I went ahead and made sure to enable it but here is where I got confused:
There was no other keyboard to disable. I shrugged it off and gave her her phone back but then she started getting frustrated. She said it wasn't letting her swype and that her keyboard didn't look like mine. I checked it out and it was the same stock HTC keyboard. I tried searching around but I can't find out how to disable the stock sense keyboard...perhaps there is a setting I'm missing but if not can someone help me with a way to get it to work? Thank you!
Im not sure I completely follow but I can try to help...
Anyways
Just go to settings > Language and keyboards > Check the Swype check box and accept the warning
In your text box wherever you are using the stock keyboard long press and tap "Input Method" and select swype.
// PS You dont need to disable anything through out the process, you can have multiple active keyboards and just leave Swype selected as the Input Method, maybe your issue is the beta version you were using? Not completely sure.

Wow thank you. I have no idea what was going wrong. After I installed it and selected it there was no warning that should have been my first indication that something was wrong. Anywho I rebooted her phone, re-enabled it in settings and finally was able to get long pressing a text input field to give me the input method box. Very weird.
Ultra keyboard can swipe too. Slide it. There are alternatives.
If you get swype, give sms to swype a try. It reads all your texts and adds words to the dictionary that aren't already in there (for swype).

Swype not autospacing

for some reason, my friends thunderbolt cant autospace when using swype. i tried reinstalling, restarting, turning autospace off then back on.. holding the space bar doesnt "turn it on" like it does on my nexus one.
he just got the phone yesterday.
any ideas?
i am having the same problem.....sort of. whenever i am doing certain tasks, swype autospaces like normal. it has worked so far with browsing, email, and the htc notepad widget that i can remember. it hasn't worked correctly whenever i write text messages though. anyone have any tips on the fix?
haven't tried with anything else except texting actually. LOL
I'd love to know if there is a fix for this, as it is happening to me too. I was going to shoot swype a message saying so. I assume if they need to fix something we need to tell them it is a problem first. Hence the Beta
It was stated in another post that you need to re-enable another keyboard and then enable swipe again. It worked for me just fine.

Must have misunderstood lol. Ya know this being a section about the Thunderbolt and all
I just installed the swype beta on my Thunderbolt and even with auto-spacing turned on in the swype settings in the menu system, when using swype to send messages shows a little red circle w/ line through it on the space bar. I don't know if this has something to do w/ some built in code on the TB? Are the rest of you with this issue showing the same thing? I mean still even having to manually space I seem to be able to type so much faster and I've only been using swype for like 2 days now on my DROID Incredible.
UPDATE:
So is this issue limited only to the built in SMS app? As I seem to have auto-spacing in the other apps I've tried... just not the messages app.

The Thunderbolt didn't come with Swype.
And yes, it's only the stock SMS app that has shown this problem. 3rd party SMS programs, email/Gmail, browser, etc. are all working fine in terms of auto-spacing using Swype.
On the official swype forum a forum mod said that this is because Sense isn't properly designating the messaging apps text input field as auto space/auto caps.

Seems isolated to the native Android SMS app. All other apps I've tried seem to work perfectly.

[APP][CM9]Evernote/Kindle UI for ICS

If you're running the latest ICS nightly (since 2012-02-02, I think) and use Evernote, you've probably noticed that it not longer displays the tablet UI.
For some reason, the Evernote app calculates width of the screen is 4.xxxx instead of the 7.xxxx required for displaying the tablet UI.
I've modified the APK to ignore the calculation so that the app displays the tablet UI.
I hope you like it.
com.evernote-2.apk
UPDATE: Some people have asked me to look at the Kindle app too.
Looking into it, but it is a little more complex ...
If you already have Evernote, you'll need to uninstall it before trying to install this one.
Tip:
Copy this to /system/app to ensure you'll never lose it ...
That way if you update the app thru the market and lose the tablet UI you can uninstall updates

Hey, cool! I read about this in your posts on the user thread. How did you do this? I don't know enough to diagnose it, but I would be interested in digging through a couple different apps in this manner.
Do you have access to the block of code you changed or are you dis-assembling this to make this work? This is a common problem across a few google apps as well (chrome, docs, etc) Just wondering if you had any insight into the root problem.
Yeah, that's why I want to know as well. I saw people asking you to take a look at the Kindle app over in the development thread, and I figure instead of buying us dinner you could just teach us how to fish, you know?
Yeah I disassembled the apk.
Essentially, I searched the decompiled files for the word "tablet" ... When I thought I found what I was looking for, I compared it against the logcat.

Yeah unfortunately it's not fixed on the Nook Color or the Touchpad.
I'll upload a picture of the Kindle app and describe the differences of tablet mode and phone mode on the Nook. I am very interested in having my NC as well as my TP displaying the Kindle app correctly for landscape mode. Without the split screen with two pages displayed in landscape mode, it's a long traverse to read a line across the entire length if the tablet. Lol
If you still have time to look into this, I would be very grateful. No worries either way.
Thanks for the Evernote fix!

Hi leapinar,
I am on the latest version and the Kindle app is not in tablet mode at 160 dpi. I do see the changes you mentioned. However just to be clear, when you hold your Nook in landscape orientation does the screen split and have two side by side pages like an open book?
Edit: I disassembled the apk, but it is not clear at all to me what is triggering the tablet view/install. I tried a few edits and reassembled the apk and nadda.. At this point I am just blindly throwing darts..
Guys,
Sorry about disappearing ... I was out of town for work for a couple of days and busy on a new work project.
I've looked at the new version of the Kindle app, and yes the margins are better, but having the ability to adjust them like the phone would be ideal.
I'm looking at the code to see if I can just swap out the tablet reader view with the phone view, giving us the phone menu options.
A little slow going ...

Would just like to second this - the app is actually semi-unusable without it being switched because there's no way to access 'menu' (no hard button on the NC and no softbutton shows up in the app).

Typing words, hit space bar, words disappear

I kinda feel dumb cuz I don't know if its actually something in predictive text settings I'm just missing or what. The problem is when I'm typing something in, primarily notice it in browser searching, I'll type words, then space bar, then word, space bar, etc etc. However, about 50% of the time, when I hit the space bar, it just deletes out the word I just typed and inserts another space. Last night I was trying to search "Galaxy S3 tips and tricks" and the whole thing came out "Galaxy S3[space][space][space]. WTF is going on here? Are others experiencing this at all? Its soooooo annoying.
FYI, it doesn't do it at all when typing out text messages so I'm wondering if it is something to do with browser or what. I tried clearing Samsung Keyboard cache and data and it worked for a bit, then started doing it again.
I think its definately keyboard related cuz if I switch and use a different keyboard, the issues disappear

I signed up for the beta on the Swype website, but a little confused as to how to really get my hands on the beta. Am I waiting for something to show up in my in-box or am I missing a link somewhere?
I believe you have to wait until the folks at Swype send you an email inviting you to the beta. IIRC it took about three days for mine to arrive when I signed up a year or so ago.
This and the copy paste issue is driving me nuts. How can they have such buggery on the shelves? I won't post off topic (not that I could copy/paste the link to that thread here anyway).
So my only option is beta, some pokey free or costly 3rd party keyboard app? Google tells me that, as these keyboards require internet access, I'm at risk of key logging activity due to the combination of permissions they require.

Possible to port Google Now Voice Search to a Sense ROM?

I know a hack is available for AOSP-based ICS ROMs. Will it ever be possible port a voice enabled Google Now to a Sense ROM?

Yes (sort of). When I first tried it, it was over the July 4th weekend, so the thread was very disorganized as people worked to get things going. I actually followed the instructions from one of the posts in the thread:

I haven't tried it since the OP has everything posted with the voice search add on. It says in the OP that it only works on AOSP Roms, but the one I used from post 142 worked for me on whichever sense based rom I was running at the time (I want to say MeanROM ICS).

Been playing with it today a little. It is a little buggy (can't exit by back button and the JB microphone button does not work as the OP from the Google Now thread said). But, I installed it like the thread said and also installed the Voice App download and the secondary voice widget (although I don't know if that one is needed). If you long press on the magnifying glass, you can have the Voice App for Google Now open so no widget is needed.
The searches were not very natural like the Siri clones such as Vlingo. If I said, "call John Doe mobile" it would say searching "call Johnd hoe mobile" and try to search Google. If I just say "John Doe", it finds that contact on the phone and I can press the contact and then go to the contact page, which are more clicks than just doing that by hand. If I say, "run rom toolbox pro", it searches Google, but if I say "rom toolbox pro", it shows the app as an option and I can click on it and it loads. It actually seems to work better if you don't use the voice functionality and just type what you are looking for.
Be extra careful hitting the back button. If you hit that on the cards page, it locks up the app. To correct it, I had to press home, then to do a long home press and swipe the app away. If you want to leave the app and not have it lock, you have to hit home.
It also puts a weather notification in the status bar.
In the end, I agree with gk1984. I think it would be cool if it was built in to the phone, but it feels bolted on and not very smooth on the 3d. I may give it a few days to see if it is as clairvoyant as they say, but I'm not seeing why I should keep it at this point.
But, try it for yourself and see. As I always say, nandroid backups are our friends.
I also tried the Vlingo beta since that is what the S3 voice app is based off of and it seems a lot smoother.
Well hopefully they'll keep developing this and make it a smoother experience. For right now, it doesn't seem like a significant upgrade from the regular stock voice search.
Also, I didn't realize there was a new Vlingo beta. I'll have to check it out.

Well, it's not all bad. You do get the little cards when you need them. But I don't think that makes it worth keeping personally.
So, I tried it for a few days and it killed my battery. My battery today only lasted 4 hours with 2 hours of screen on time. There were 2000 wakelocks trying to get my location, which I think was Google Now.
Yea, that's no bueno.

I don't think Google Now was meant to be an assistant and follow commands, but I could be wrong. I think this is purely an enhanced search feature. They've be reporting the assistant was supposed to release in Q3 or Q4. They only said development was being sped up very shortly before the release of JB. They may still release an assistant later.

So it's half assed like Siri. The whole idea was that it was supposed to answer questions before you asked.

It actually does on my N7. As you keep using the feature, it'll start showing the relevant cards but I'm not sure if a port will work the same way.
