[Q] Will we ever get External storage support for Flashing ROMS? - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Will we ever see a CWM recovery or any recovery for that matter that supports the external storage card?

This would be pretty convenient for transferring ROMs between devices (or even with the PC, USB cables always seem a bit flaky to me).

Absolutely. And that would also allow me to wipe the whole device and flash a rom from scratch...
I guess I never figured out why the recovery cannot use the external storage

[Q] PC usb connection screen

I'm wondering how to switch between the different screens you see when you click on the USB icon in notification area when connected to PC. One has the android guy and an icon to turn on or off USB storage and the other has the three choices where you pick between charge only htc sync and disk drive, and then click done. I noticed with different roms i get a different one but want to use the one i like, is there a way to do this? thankyou
I don't believe you can. I would say it's based on the software version of the ROM your running.

Only HTC STOCK based ROMs such as the original Eris ROM, xtrSENSE, xtrROM, and other similar ROMs have the one including HTC Sync as an option.
I have no idea if you can change the look of the screen, or how to go about it if you can.
I don't even use the traditional method of mounting the SD card anymore. For many months I've been using, first a widget called SD Share/Dual Mount SD which allows you to mount the SD card to the computer without dismounting it from the phone.
Then Multi Mount SD came along which has an option to automount the SD card to my PC whenever I connect the USB cable. Now I use this. It also has a widget but I don't need or use it since it automatically mounts and dismounts. Note if you reboot either the phone or computer while it's still connected you'll have to disconnect and reconnect it once one or both devices are rebooted before it'll automount again. At least with the current version.
SD Share/Dual Mount SD now apparently has this capability, too.
Also, Windows and Linux programs like QtADB (recommended) and Android Commander (I never personally got it working but I know other people did) allow you to access the system areas of your phone PLUS your SD card through a Windows GUI without mounting the SD card in the usual way. It does this because deep down it uses ADB for everything. I think it comes with the components it requires though, so I don't think you need to install the complete Android SDK though. I don't know for sure since I have the SDK installed anyway.

USB Mass storage?

How do I enable USB Mass storage mode instead of the stupid MTP og PTP?
Regards,
BTJ
Not sure if this works for the SGS3 but it worked for the SGS2:
Bring up Settings.
Click More… (under Wireless and network).
Then select USB utilities ~ Set USB cable connection mode.
Select Connect storage to PC then.
Connect USB cable from phone to PC.
Select Turn on USB storage.
That’s all.
Sorry, no such settings in SGS3, we are stuch with MTP or PTP... Don't understand the logic behind removing USB Mass storage mode!! Both MTP and PTP are slow as hell and there is no support for S3 in libmtp at the moment to make matters worse... If I had known this, I would have reconsidered my choice of buying a SGS3.....
BTJ
Like the Nexus, /sdcard is mounted at /data/media (IIRC, mount point could be different), meaning that internal data and the internal sdcard space share the space, rather than being split. UMS removes access to the device that is mounted from the phone, so it cannot be used when the sdcard is shared in this fashion.
I thought libmtp worked? I've been using adb and a GUI for shifting lots of files, qtadb
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Seems to be a problem with both SII and SIII... But I will check out qtadb, thx...
BTJ
So am I reading this right. You can't plug a USB cable in, the SD card appears then in explorer?
I have a sensation XE at moment and use this a lot for transferring files at work/home etc.
So can I not access my files normally now that I copy to SD card, eg docs etc?
Nope... But it sounds like you are using Windows so then MTP will work, kind of like you are used to...
BTJ
The idea about using MTP is it allows you to continue to use your phone without disruption, loading Mass Storage un-mounts the sd from your phone.
However I do think we should still be given a choice
Yes, I guess I understand the idea... What I don't understand is why they have removed the choice we used to have.... :-|
BTJ
I stil don't have an S3, but am a little confused on the MTP etc. Also I use a Mac and a Windows PC.
So when you plug in an S3 on a Windows PC, what does it do in MTP mode? just still allow you to drag/drop files? does the S3 come up as another drive or something in explore?
Also anyone with a Mac, how does this work?
cheers
This might give us some insight on why no USB Storage.

I think I got the jist of that article lol but does this mean android developement were looking for devices to have either internal storage or sd storage but because the SG3 has both its sort of screwed things up a bit?
So UMS might be released in a later patch to allow easier access to added SD storage? Or does the current setting allow access to both storage thru windows pc?
Soz if I come across as a noob I havent got sg3 yet but planning to get one in a few weeks for upgrade and Ive been trying to get the low down on positives and negatives before I get the phone
Keep things simple!
Please can someone answer this simply.
Can I plug in the device into my mac/pc and just transfer any file to the micro SD card whilst it is in the phone?
All I want to do is to be able to put avi files on it as samsung kies or doubletwist doesn't seem to suppor them...
A yes or a no with and explanation would be great ta!!

yes you can easily do that. No issues in that. Simply treat it as a normal pendrive in such a case.
sorted!

Thanks for the help. Although I figure out what everyone was talking about.
This is how I did it (maybe this will help others noobs as well):
You will need the 'Android File Transfer program' --> google search it!
1.Connect phone to PC (you will see usb icon at the top of the screen)
2. Pull down the notification centre.
3. Touch the usb thing.
4. Click PTP mode
5. Open the file transfer program
BOOM! Rock on nerds!

[Q] USB OTG support in recovery

OK, so the DNA has support when booted into the OS for USB OTG cables/thumb drives... is it a pipe dream getting the same feature in recovery?
I've tried with both TWRP and CWM to no avail. When in the phone's OS, the mount point is located at: /storage/USB but that doesn't appear in either recoveries.
My reason for asking is simple: Considering the DNA's weakest feature is the storage space (both the relatively small amount and lack of SD Card slot), it would be beneficial for many to enable it so that when performing nand backups, ROM/Mod/Script flashes, etc. in recovery, one could actually store all of those items on the Thumb Drive rather than the internal storage. I'm finding it very painstaking to have to perform these types of items, having to copy/paste/move/delete them on and off the phone's "SDcard" folder... it's also somewhat of a risk if your phone somehow gets hosed and you didn't move your files off of the phone prior to the hosing.
HTC may not have given us more storage options (dare I say like the iPhone, where you can get 32/64gb+ space), but with USB OTG we can use a thumb drive as our sdcard.

UMS on Android 4.3 gives "Please insert disk into removable disk"

Hello,
When I updated my S3 to 4.3 from 4.1.2, it was terrible. It was very laggy, my screen didn't show when pressing the Power Button or the Home Button, and I thought that resetting to factory might fix it. Well, I was so desperate to make my phone work better that I didn't realize that all my files were on the internal storage, I don't have an SD Card. So, I've lost everything.
Now, I'm trying to recover some photos, but I can't connect my phone as USB mass storage to use a recovery soft on Windows 8. I rooted my phone, installed USB Mass Storage Enabler app, but it shows two drives (H: and I, but I can't access those. It gives me "Please insert a disk into Removable Drive (LETTER"
Please help, I did everything I found on forums, but still nothing. Those files might be lost, but now I have another battle.. Making my phone available in Mass Storage.
And by the way, it still works terrible with 4.3. Hate it so much!
Have you installed USB drivers ???
Have you read the stickied storage/ recovery thread ??

Unfortunately I think USB Mass Storage in the way it is implemented in 4.x for the moment can only share the external SD, the internal one is never visible.
IMHO the only approach to recover "something" is to get an external microSD larger than the internal partition and create a block copy (with dd under adb in CWM/Philz recovery for instance) of the entire "internal SD" partition - that one will be an EXT4 (Linux) partition) and there is a very, very small chance that you might recover some stuff from it (I doubt but who knows).
Yes, i have the Samsung USB Driver for mobile phone (1.5.29.0)
No, didn't read the storage/recovery thread.
Oh well...
Such error happens if transfer breaks unexpectedly. Think what file did you send lastly and delete it, it should fix your issue.
If you can't remember or it did not, formatting your external sd card will fix it for sure.

Ah, you're talking about internal one.
Well, then your magic program doesn't work properly. Perhaps you could try boeffla kernel and it's UMS.

[Q] Super slow file transfers over USB

I only use the internal memory on my Rezound, not a removable micro-SD card. Prior to rooting and installing a custom ROM, copying large files to the phone by USB was pretty quick. That was with ICS and I understand that since Android 4.2.2 you can only connect by MTP or mass storage mode. But now copying files TO the internal storage is extremely slow (about 1.4 MB/second). It's not the cable itself, as copying files FROM the internal storage to the computer goes quick, like it used to. Could the internal memory be formatted improperly? The drivers for the phone on my Win 7 computer (64 bit) looked like generic Microsoft USB drivers, but when I tried to update with drivers made available with the HTC Sync app, Windows didn't allow it, saying the drivers it was using were the most current. Copying from the computer to other USB devices like flash memory sticks is quick and fine, like always. Thanks for any help.

MTP uses the generic Microsoft drivers, it just looks like a media (player/camera) device to the computer, HTC sync drivers are not used anymore for normal file transfers.
What ROM are you using? Have you tried multiple ones with the same result?

Right now it's the LiquidSmooth v3.2, and earlier in the week I was trying the most recent Tachyon (4.3.1). When I was using Tachyon, I had a problem where the internal storage was not visible or useable. It showed up again after the wipe in preparation for the LS install.
I'm also perplexed because my battery life is pretty bad, which is in contrast to what most people say about LS v3.2. I'm a noob and wonder if I could have missed a subtle step or setting, even though I have spent lots of time reading, studying, prepping and learning. I don't actually use this Rezound as a phone, it's just a learning project and I use it as a standalone media player and occasional email/browser situation on wifi.
Thank you.

The internal storage gets weird sometimes on newer ROMs... if a wipe returned it you are probably all right, a "wipe" also does a format. You would probably be safe to go back to Tachyon if you wish... Always wipe twice all partitions, and I would recommend using a microSD card, most ROMs expect to see both internal and external storage, even if it is just a small 4GB or 8GB card. I have not heard of people specifically mentioning MTP transfers being that slow, but it is definitely slower than standard direct mount access as was used in ICS and prior Android versions.
Battery life on the Rezound has always been bad by comparison to other devices, 1.5 to 2 hours screen time is about the best it can do on a standard battery in nearly new condition. Since you are using it without mobile data service activated, make sure to disable mobile data.
Also, I would recommend going S-OFF... Rezounds seem to be dying lately due to failed internal storage, if you are S-ON there is often no recovery option to restore service, when S-OFF we have more options. I recommend using Rumrunner S-OFF (Google it, it's easy to find), make sure to do a backup in recovery before hand since the process often makes the phone unbootable after it is initially complete.
