Going abroad for a few weeks, taking EVO LTE, any tips? - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Visiting my family in Romania and taking my evo. I just need it for the wifi to check some emails, light web browsing, texting with google voice, and taking pictures/video. I find it more convenient than my older bulgy camera for pictures as I can just keep it in my pocket like I do everyday anyways. They use gsm not cdma, so I will be in airplane mode the whole time.
Anyone got any tips or neat apps I should get for the trip? Will GPS/geo-tagging work there? Thanks.

Use labs from Google maps and download the apps they work offline (airplane mode) and you will just use gps, I done it before and im doing next week since I'm going to cancun I download the map to make sure I don't get lost

Lol no, saw that on google reader heh, that's what got me thinking. But I can do the time conversion in my head without thinking, I won't be using data, and I don't need the third.

How do you use labs?

Does the GPS work when you're in airplane mode? I tested it on my dad's GSII a few weeks ago and it didn't for his phone.

Yes it does
Make sure is on, gps doesn't use data

I've used NDrive for navigation in Germany where I didn't (obviously) have a signal. The program is free and you buy the maps for fairly cheap.
But that was before there was Google Maps caching. I'll try that next time.

Mobile Hotspot blocking...

I just got this message from T-Mobile:

Not sure if my Hotspot was meant to be blocked, but it's still working. I guess T-Mobile is slowly learning about those APN settings, or something.
Your take?
Yeah I called T-Mobile yesterday and was talking about the 5gb data with tether. They said that the engineers are working on blocking the loop holes that allow tether.

They are closing in on this loop hole, a lot of users have gotten theirs blocked and even with this it's still not working anymore.

You're probably not one of those that eat up a lot of data via tethering, from what I've been reading it's the ones that use tethering a lot for stuff like pc's, movies and gaming are the ones they started shutting down on.

Well exactly why you have no restrictions, these users are the ones with 2GB plans.

We have no data restrictions but we still have to pay for tethering.

Lucky you, lol.
Clockwork Tether. $5 and no root required.
Call and ask for preferred android. It's $20 but gives you 5GB.

Losing 4G signal (T-Mobile)

So I just got myself a new GS3 and everything seems to be working great except my phone goes to Edge where I should be getting 4G. My brothers GS2 is sitting next to mine and he's got full 4G. I'm fully stock and not rooted. Any ideas?

You sure you're not holding it in a death grip? Just playing, how many bars does your brother get in 4G mode? If he's rooted, he probably has a custom modem so that could be the difference. or you're antenna is just crap.
Lol were both stock and not rooted atm. He had I think two bars at 4G and I had full 3 bars on Edge. It's been on 4G since that but if it keeps doing it I'm gonna go and exchange it or it may be a software issue that a OTA will resolve

PSA... friends don't let friends drive while looking for Sprint LTE

We're distracted enough out there on the road as it is...last thing we need are a few thousand Android geeks looking at their phones to see if they have LTE. Or worse yet, toggle settings while cruising to get that fleeting glimpse of a not-ready-for-primetime LTE signal.
Let's be careful out there ...

Especially for those of us on motorcycles. I don't know how many close calls I've had where the driver was to busy talking or texting.

Ummm, u need to be more precise. But, yes it is capable. U need jellybean or a rom that has google now in it. There's also Iris which is a beta siri clone. Google Now is really cool though. Impressed my friend this morning when I thought I had my phone off and must have pressed the voice search thing.
But it heard me ask my friend when does daylight savings start and it started talking from my pocket, so I pulled my phone out and it was still talking but had a card saying November 4, 2012.
Pretty cool, nice coincidence too, lol.
I'm jealous...how do I get iris on my.phone

It's in the play store, there are quite a few apps like it.
push the HTC Speak button, there are already voice commands on the stock rom
I don't have htc speak. At least I've never seen it before.
Yes...where is the HTC speak button.

Its also the Google Voice Search button on the widget
When you use it, the voice commands come up. you can watch a video on how to use it
I always called that voice search, I never referred to it as htc speak, thanks.
lol so did i, only called it that because of Viper4G, but no problem!
Yea, I use it all the time, it works relatively well for me. I've also been using and app called maluuba. It's decent.

Sprint app

Are others having this issue? Can i do anything about it before we get root?

You aren't the only One that app killed my battery faster than keeping the screen on pretty impressive how an app can manage to drain battery that fast and this is on my home Wi-Fi network. The app is trouble and if it's not draining battery for some people it's definitely not helping their battery either So best to keep it turned off imo.

Mine was doing the same thing even with the app off.. still running WILD with GPS .. climbing. Ended up killing it that way.. going and hitting FORCE STOP under apps, killed all background apps in Dev options.. Funny thing is.. first few weeks with this phone.. It never showed up.. Suddenly it's there and going nutz!!! (It's all fixed for now) lol :good:
This is what mine is doing.. CONSTANTLY. I can watch the GPS usage climb.. and i have location off.
