Local root method for Nook tablet 8 / 16 GB {WIP} {1.4.2} - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

Alright, now I am reposting this. I have found a new way to root the tablet (gain adb to run as root) on 1.4.2 so if anyone wants to help me with packaging it to be able to run on the system since we can't sideload (I was thinking a browser exploit or having a file hex edited to launch an intent...) so if you want to help, just comment here.
Full information, binary, and other general h4x will be released when I have everything ready.
Note: This is not just a "write to file" I'm just not giving up what I did yet :x
Tested on 8gb nook tablet.
proof:
Code:
$ echo ro.kernel.qemu=1 > /data/local.prop
echo ro.kernel.qemu=1 > /data/local.prop
C:\Users\Indirect>adb reboot
C:\Users\Indirect>adb shell
# ^C
C:\Users\Indirect>adb shell
# id
id
uid=0(root) gid=0(root)

Updating post since now I actually do have it working in a neat way :x

Updated OP with information. Have a fully working root, just need to be able to launch it against a completely "pure" system in a creative way :x

Yum. Sideloading not being an option, wouldn't the browser need an exploit? Or does the android browser not operate in a sandbox?

honestly, I think if we pull a .png into the gallery that is not a picture, but an intent, then it will run just fine

For those with ideas or interest in it, join us on #nook-tablet on freenode IRC.

alright, I know it goes against instinct but:
Even if you're not a developer or just want to say congrats, post in the thread. Who knows, your idea might be what we need to get this thing running!

I'm just an old man (67) with years of playing with computers. Last job at Seagate. How can I help out?

Just vocalize an interesting way to package the exploit onto the system

Its a nook tablet... make it a book...
The cover could be indirect choke slamming Barnes and Noble at the same time. Flip page gets credits. Flip again gets root. The end...

As much fun as that sounds, I don't know of any way to launch an intent from an epub / pdf atm =(

Oh well...

Congrats on your accomplishment. The thought that comes to mind somehow is an image of someone next to a B&N store and somehow an image of them "Putting the scews to the B&N Store" being incorporated....This is likely no more doable than the suggestion above but.....

A friend of mine told me stegnography is likely for this so we might use a picture to get adb enabled for root.

I wonder how many of the b&n store demo tablets will have root access when this is finished. Lol.

Wouldn't a .gif file be better? You can hide a whole script or batch file in between frames in an animated gif. I've never tried it but it seems plausible.

I saw this done in WINDOZE years ago. The file was a jpeg. I'll try a search through my old win stuff but I think the catch is what onboard app can you exploit.

Reread op; I missed the mark on this one as you have your exploit. Please ignore!

Eris forum moved to Legacy - now doesn't show up in Tapatalk!!

So I see they've moved the Eris forum to the legacy devices, which is fine if you're accessing the site via a browser, but now it is NOWHERE to be found in the tapatalk app!! This is infuriating! I do most of my forum reading, posting, and downloading via tapatalk. This has essentially made tapatalk (an app I paid for) useless to me now.
Does anyone know if there is a way to get to the Eris forum via tapatalk now? If not, is there a mobile theme for this site?
As of now i can still get to it through xda's app but who nows how long thats gona last :/

It's gone for me too, WTF XDA !!!!!! Bring it back please !!!
i added the eris forum to my favs beforehand so it still shows up under the favorites tab. maybe the mods can move it back for a couple days so everyone else can do the same

Ah, I wondered if maybe that was why I could still access it via XDA app. So with the XDA or TapaTalk, you can't normally access anything in the Legacy section?

seems so. guess it isnt something everyone is aware of, as it hasnt been fixed. doubt theyd move a forum with still plenty of development to a section thats inaccessible through their own app if it was more widely known to be an issue to frequent visitors

I had it added to my favorites too in tapatalk and now it's gone. That's actually how I first noticed that something had changed.
I've been told (as an avid vogue user) that they are working on bringing the legacy devices to xda app. Unfortunately, until then, all you can see are the threads you've posted in.
I sent svetius a (polite) inquiry about this, along with a link to this thread.
Perhaps he will reply here.
We'll see; I suppose it is just an oversight.

It's kind of a pain in the ass.
Maybe sometime soon an update to the app will be considered to add access to the Legacy Devices section of the forum. Or perhaps that is already in the works. Or quite possibly just wishful thinking on my part. lol

Update 2/20/11:
I got a response from svetius which said that XDA is aware of the problem and is working on it.
Separately, it looks as if he updated his announcement post with this:

Hmmm. Somehow I assumed that the listings were controlled from the server side, rather than being hard-coded into the app. (I can see that being the case for the XDA app, but for tapatalk ???)

Thanks for the update on that bftb0. So far I'm still good on the XDA app because I haven't had to do a fresh install of it since the change. I'm wondering though if you were to have a backup of the app through TI Backup with the Eris forum marked as a favorite and installed the app then used TI to restore data you would be able to access it still. Kinda pointless now though lol.

No, I had a Titanium Backup of the xda app with this forum marked as a favorite and it did not restore it.
This fix was posted on a forum for the Hero but will supposedly work on the Eris as well, all credit for this post goes to ranger61878 for coming up with the solution and svetius for pointing me towards the post.
Just an FYI for those who lost the favorites for all of the HTC Droid Eris threads in the XDA app when you formatted following the move of our device to the Legacy page...
Assuming you have a nandroid laying around, the fix is very simple and was alluded to in the post directly above this. Here is what ya do
1. Nandroid back to a previous build
2. Backup the XDA app with Titanium Backup
3. Nandroid back to your current build
4. Use Titanium Backup and restore XDA (App+Data)
5. Enjoy
I haven't tried this yet, so I have no idea if it works or not but it seems like it should. I also received a pm from svetius after I sent him a pm telling him that the Eris Forums are still very very active and that the Eris forums shouldn't have been moved:
"You're right, and we're sorry. We're working with the developer of the app to include Legacy support as soon as possible."
I would love to see a fix to tapatalk as well, not just the XDA app.

Workaround for XDA App - we don't need no steenking Premium App
Here's a little present for you folks (see attached).
I fooled around a little (OK, a lot) and using the "sqlite3" utility on the phone (GSB v1.6, probably most other ROMs, too), I created a replacement "tapatalk.db" file which you can use to replace your existing subscribed/favorites list for the XDA app, with a version pre-configured for all 5 of the Eris Forums. (If you have more subscriptions/favorites than that, you can add them back manually afterwards)
This will allow even users that have never bookmarked/"favorite-ed" Eris forums to access them in the XDA app. (Note that I did not fool around with the market "Tapatalk" app, so I have no reason to believe it will work for that, but who knows. The same hacking method that I used will probably work there, too, and I've included an thumbnail sketch of that below for anyone interested.)
XDA app data location: /data/data/com.quoord.tapatalkxda.activity/
File in question is: /data/data/com.quoord.tapatalkxda.activity/databases/tapatalk.db
Instructions/Outline:
1) Make sure XDA app is not running.
2) Make a backup copy of current "tapatalk.db" file
3) Unzip the zip file (provided below)
4) Push ErisForums-tapatalk.db to /data/data/com.quoord.tapatalkxda.activity/databases/tapatalk.db
5) Find out what UID/GID owns the files in /data/data/com.quoord.tapatalkxda.activity/databases/, and then
6) "chown" the replacement tapatalk.db file, as in (example) :
Code:
chown app_666:app_666 /data/data/com.quoord.tapatalkxda.activity/databases/tapatalk.db
(in your case, the file ownership will be something different - "app_105", "app_117", whatever).
That's pretty much it. (7) Fire up the XDA app (com.quoord.tapatalkxda.activity.apk) and enjoy.
This next section you can skip if you are not interested in the details - but it describes how you could possibly do the same thing with Tapatalk.
================================================================================
The basic method is to dump the contents of a given SQL table (using "sqlite3", already on your phone) to a text file which can be edited, and then reload it back into the "tapatalk.db" SQL database. (Again, by using "sqlite3"). Obviously, you need adb or god forbid a terminal emulator to do this.
You can find background information on using sqlite/sqlite3 here; a SQL syntax reference is here.
What I did prior to the below steps was to subscribe to each of the 5 Droid Incredible (leaf) forums - that way I would be modifying an extremely similar case to match the Eris forum IDs.
Code:
# [COLOR=green]cd /data/data/com.quoord.tapatalkxda.activity/databases[/COLOR]
# [COLOR=green]sqlite3 tapatalk.db[/COLOR]
sqlite> [COLOR=green].mode insert[/COLOR]
sqlite> [COLOR=green].output sqldump.sql[/COLOR]
sqlite> [COLOR=green].table[/COLOR]
android_metadata favorite subscribeforum
sqlite> [COLOR=green].schema subscribeforum[/COLOR]
CREATE TABLE subscribeforum (id INTEGER PRIMARY KEY AUTOINCREMENT,forumid VARCHER,tapforumurl VARCHAR,name VARCHAR,subonly INTEGER,logourl VARCHAR,subforum BLOB);
sqlite> [COLOR=green]select * from subscribeforum;[/COLOR]
sqlite> [COLOR=green].exit[/COLOR]
At this point you move the sqldump.sql file to your PC, and edit it with a text editor. Note the 2nd field in the SQL table is "forumid". The Eris forum ids are 552, 737, 553, 554, 555. Edit these into place in the correct rows, and modify the text as you wish
Note also the field "subonly". This is important. In my experimentation with the XDA app, if a forum has sub-forums this field will be set to "1", and there will be a large binary blob in the last field of the record - this field in turn has information about the subforums in it. I was able to unpack it, and stuff some modified values into it using a hex editor, and re-pack it, but this method was unsuccessful for some unknown reason ... and much more difficult than what I am describing here. So, rather than just making a single favorite/subscription being the "toplevel" Eris Forum (#551) with 5 subforums, I created subscriptions to each of the 5 "leaf" Eris forums. You will see that these "leaf" forums (forums which have no sub-forums) have "subonly" set to 0, and the binary blob "subforum" is NULL.
Oh yeah, one more thing - when sqlite creates the table dump ("sqldump.sql"), it does not insert the table name into the output record, but instead just says "table". In each line of the "sqldump.sql" file, make sure to replace "table" with the actual name of the table you are loading data into, e.g. "subscribeforum" in the case of the XDA app. (database file "tapatalk.db"; table name within the database is "subscribeforum". Could be slightly different with tapatalk), for instance:
Code:
INSERT INTO subscribeforum VALUES(1,555,'http://forum.xda-developers.com/mobiquo/mobiquo.php','Droid Eris Themes and Apps',0,'',NULL);
INSERT INTO subscribeforum VALUES(2,554,'http://forum.xda-developers.com/mobiquo/mobiquo.php','Droid Eris Android Development',0,'',NULL);
INSERT INTO subscribeforum VALUES(3,553,'http://forum.xda-developers.com/mobiquo/mobiquo.php','Droid Eris Accessories',0,'',NULL);
INSERT INTO subscribeforum VALUES(4,737,'http://forum.xda-developers.com/mobiquo/mobiquo.php','Droid Eris Q&A',0,'',NULL);
INSERT INTO subscribeforum VALUES(5,552,'http://forum.xda-developers.com/mobiquo/mobiquo.php','Droid Eris General',0,'',NULL);
Then, push it back to the phone, delete all the records out of the existing database, and "load" these new records into the database:
(Please Note: the "mobiquo.php" URL should be left alone - it is the forum ID values which actually load the correct forum.)
Code:
# [COLOR=green]sqlite3 tapatalk.db[/COLOR]
SQLite version 3.7.2
Enter ".help" for instructions
Enter SQL statements terminated with a ";"
sqlite> [COLOR=green]delete from subscribeforum;[/COLOR]
sqlite> [COLOR=green].read sqldump.sql[/COLOR]
[COLOR=grey][I](these last 3 commands are just to verify that the data loaded)[/I][/COLOR]
sqlite> [COLOR=green].header on[/COLOR]
sqlite> [COLOR=green].mode column[/COLOR]
sqlite> [COLOR=green]select * from subscribeforum;[/COLOR]
id forumid tapforumurl name subonly logourl subforum
---------- ---------- --------------------------------------------------- -------------------------- ---------- ---------- ----------
1 555 http://forum.xda-developers.com/mobiquo/mobiquo.php Droid Eris Themes and Apps 0

There really is no way to give you a shortcut to what it takes to be "not dangerous" to your phone. You need to learn your way around a Linux/Unix command line - that's the only thing which is going to keep you safe.
Get VirtualBox from Oracle (virtualbox.org), and install Ubuntu 10.04 (or 10.10) x32 in a virtual machine on your PC, and get started learning. The phone is the wrong place to learn because the screen is too damn small, and you don't have a fast browser and a ready set of user documents to help you learn.
Good Luck

Working Google Talk With Video and Voice Chat Support {Skype Coming}

Google Talk with Video and Voice Chat officially works on our phones. After hours of chatting with the Atrix devs, and tons of learning throughout the process, we got it done!
You Must Be Rooted!! If you are not, Go buy an HD dock and see this page:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1199098
Anything in BOLD is to tell you what you are going to be doing.
Anything in RED needs to be typed in.
Preliminary Steps:
1. Root your phone using the above link.
2. Delete Talk.apk from your phone
use Root explorer to navigate to /system/app/
locate the Talk.apk file
click "mount as R/W" in upper right corner
long-press Talk.apk and press delete
After you are rooted and have deleted the Talk.apk:
1. Download the necessary lib file
http://www.multiupload.com/3O8RT5EAT5
1.5 Download the Google Talk apk that supports video chat
http://www.multiupload.com/TN67C757KH
2. Open up and ADB Shell as root
adb shell
su
(You should now have a # instead of a $)
3. Remount /system partition as RW instead of RO
/bin/mount -o remount,rw /system
exit
exit
4. Push libtalk_jni.so to /sdcard/
adb push libtalk_jni.so /sdcard/
5. Copy libtalk_jni.so to /system/lib
cp /sdcard/libtalk_jni.so /system/lib/
6. Exit adb shell
exit
exit
You should now be back in your Android SDK folder.
7. Push Talk2.apk to /sdcard/
adb push Talk2.apk /sdcard/
8. Use Root Explorer to install the Talk2.apk
9. After installing, reboot phone and you should be good to go!
Thanks to: Eval-, Crnkoj, and a few others in the Atrix forums for the help on getting this to work!
Now that we all have root access (if you haven't rooted your phone, go buy a dock!), I think it'd be great if the devs could possibly work on getting Google Talk to support the video protocol. After all, we are running 2.3.4 so our version supports it. Also, I remember downloading a modified apk for the Skype app on my E3D and it allowed for video chat... anyway that can be done for us?
Edit: 8/3/2011
I'm currently working on the Google Talk app to get a version which will support our FFC... My phone isn't available for testing because it's a work phone and I need some people (with rooted photon's) to put their babies up to the test. Anything you do can simply be undone with a factory reset... I promise
UPDATE: Got the Apk to install that supports native video chat, but I get FC when trying to use the Video feature. Anyone with any sense of programming further than basic stuff willing to help out?
I was about to ask the same thing.

I agree. I was very disappointed that I cannot talk to people using Google Voice & Video. Heck, I can't even voice chat! Only text.
I installed Fring which lets me do voice chat over Google Talk... but still no video.
What's the point of having a front-facing camera if there's barely any software that supports it?
So my photon isn't available for testing because it's turned into a work phone but I had a theory as to how to get working Gtalk on our phones!

If your a sprint premier customer you can get 25% off for the pair ... ($99 + $59 = $158 - 25% = 118.50 + tax)

Already decided to say screw it to work and take the risk with just using my own phone. Need some help with the programming though. All help is appreciated!
Any thoughts on why the feature was disabled in the first place? I thought this was the purpose of the FFC -
Well, got it working... instructions above
I'm waiting to receive my photon. However, I'm so confused to the process.
Is ADB Shell a program?
Also, are we typing the instructions before the "title" of each step?
thanks and sorry for the ignorance...

Or just use the one they have on display at the store for a few minutes if you can find one.
Worked great without using ADB, just moved both files to the locations in the instructions with ES Explorer in root mod.
Damn, that phone is getting better by the minute with all the developers' genius work. Thanks to all involved in making this device a true super phone.

[Discussion][4.0, 5.0 US+INTL]Enabling handsfree calling

First of all - sorry for posting it here, i don't mean to be in your face, it's just all discussions about this topic in other threads or posts went nowhere and i also think it didn't get enough attention from the developers. So, i just wanted to start a new thread dedicated to just this feature, since i believe this is one of the most useful features which is somehow got missed in these devices.
I'm talking about the ability to use GP5 to make calls though and answer calls from other devices through bluetooth. I think it's nuts that Samsung didn't implement this feature in these players, since most if not all top range mp3 and media players from this manufacturer in the last 5-6 years have had this feature (my pretty basic 4 year old samsung mp3 player can do this easily). Some people wonder why i care about this, but in my opinion it is a killer feature, which really opens up so many different possibilities to these devices. Tablets with 3g and 4g are reasonably cheap these days, so more and more people buy them. When you have one of them, you naturally think about a possibility of making calls through it. I'm one of such people, i have a 10" 3g tablet and i would like to be able to call through it using my GP5.
I participate in 5-6 different forums dedicated to these devices (mostly european sites) and i see requests and questions from people about this feature almost on daily basis. I think there are hundreds of people out there who would love to have it in their GPs. What i know is that the new GP 3.6 and 4.2 have it and the older ones 4.0 and 5.0 don't. So, i'm begging you, somebody, please make a ROM with this feature! I have no experience in programming for Android, but i think it should be very easy to take code or a library or whatever it is from one device and put it into another, since all these players have pretty much the same hardware (to my knowledge).
Thank you for your attention.
I you can link to a 3.6 or 4.2 rom that I can pull from (can be stock, custom or whatever), I can possibly integrate it into my next release, although I give no promises. Also, as this is development, and this is slightly off topic, I recommend that you change your post tags to [Discussion][4.0, 5.0 US+INTL]Enabling handsfree calling, so that people understand that this is a discussion, not some random person begging for a feature.
Thanks for your reply, i'll have a look for such rom.
Ok, i've changed the tags of this thread. Thanks.
Thanks! I also meant the tags in the thread name, not the actual thread tags. I never use them, so I forgot .
Right, that's what i thought at first, but i see no way to change the name of the thread, unfortunately.

ok, Mars11_ on this forum pointed me here ->source codes for samsung players, plus he also offered to get any files from his unrooted GP 3.6. Would any of this be of any help?

great, thanks for the tip, done.
Thanks for the link! I will try and play around with some of the stuff included and see if I can come up with something. It may be just as simple as installing an apk...
Or maybe swapping bt libs would be all it takes.

oh, sweet, i'm all itching in anticipation! thanks mate!
this means the phone features also needs to be activated because it goes hand in hand im not a dev but im sure its more than installing an apk. i think this will also require some framework changes. also activating the sip calling feature will be very exciting as our SGP can sync contacts as well this can be done in galaxy note by just adb pushing some files to system dir and activating the hands free profile in htc flyer is as simple as editing the build.prop so im sure this is doable but we need to call in the attention of devs :good:
Bad news guys, the uncompiled image didn't help, and I was unable to open the .img that I pulled from a 3.6 rom. Could someone pull their entire /system directory (apply this terminal command: dd if=/dev/block/systemname of=/sdcard/factoryfs.rfs), and then pull it off their sdcard (internal) and upload it here (tar or zip it if you need to). I do not believe root is required for that, and I am able to access .rfs files to edit them. You can find the name of your system partition by punching in "mount" in the terminal and then finding /system in the output, and recording the partition name that follows (eg. my system partition on my 4.0 is /dev/block/stl9).
I was tinkering with my sgp amd found this if this might be of any help

Ok, I've just sent an email to Mars11_, who's recently offered his help with extracting files from his SGP 3.6 in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28558588#post28558588
I asked him to come here and follow your instructions. He's our only hope right now.
Got responce from Mars11_ that's what he said: "Okay, so I've run the commands Hanthesolo had, but I didn't have read access to /dev/block/mmcblk0p8 . So I need root, and second, I can't post in the Android Dev yet, as I don't have 10 or more posts. "
Well, hat pretty much means that I can't pull anything together untilthe 3.6 gets root (I guess I could create a guide for that, but I don't have a 3.6, and I cannot exract anything from it's .img images). Sorry about that, but as soon as a /systm dump is uploaded, I will get on it. A last ditch attempt may be to use adb, but I think that you must have root to get su access from it as well. Perhaps you can boot into stock recovery and adb push the superuser binary and apk, that is, if the stock recovery supports adb, as I believe /system is mounted as rw in recovery. Perhaps a signed update.zip that only has superuser? I dunno, just some theories for 3.6 devs.
Mate, you have absolutely nothing to appologise for, you've done everything you could. I'm grateful for you desire to work on this. I guess we'll just have to be patient and wait for the 3.6 to be rooted Thank you.
Well, thanks for giving me a project to work on, because my sumer has just about fizzled out! I look forward to working on this while I wait for my Nexus 7 to arrive, and with it some more time-consuming hobbies .

You can always try the korean system dump and see what it gives.

[ROM][DISCUSSION] Ubuntu Touch B&N Nook Tablet

Hey all, I've been around for a while and suppose I finally got off my butt and decided to try my hand at building stuff. I just wanted to let you know I posted this in the Ubuntu Touch Dev forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41307690
All credits go to the efforts of all the devs who have gotten us this far, I know there would be no hope for me without them
Not really usable, but it boots! :highfive:
I'd like to keep the dev questions in that thread if we can. General discussion can be here.
Updated dev post...
-dejello
Posted a 2nd build and added stuff to the post, sorry about the name change, more for me than anything else. Apps stay open, videos stopped working >.< I haven't checked the logs for anything yet, will do when I get a chance...
Figured I'd put up some new pics... I found out apparently if you swipe right on the status icons you get a Device pull down vs the individual ones... <-- DIdn't know that until a little bit ago Pics show that, multitasking (gallery on left, calc on right) and Home screen with the side bar...
I was just wondering today wether anyone had tried this yet thanks for the effort it's appreciated.

Any way to run this off an SD card?
I haven't even looked into it yet... I need to look into the Ubuntu side of the code to see what it isn't pulling in like it should be so this thing can function better. I found a script in another forum for auto changing the display stuff, added an Acclaim piece to it and it works, will upload it when I get off work today.

So the wifi doesn't work? Try using another wpa supplicant, like in Demetris's kernel.
How is the dev coming
Sorry, no new news yet, i didn't get too much of a chance this weekend to look into it... Between the family and having had to basically start over and I kept having problems even getting cm10.1 to build... I will work more on it time willing ofc..

What steps are you following to build this? I what to build a Linux other than Ubuntu touch. I think that plasma active would be awesome on NT.

The Wi-Fi problem comes from the Ubuntu end. Since this is Ubuntu Developer Preview, the wifi does not work.
question about ubuntu touch for nook
hi, i am new to this forum....
i was checking to see if there was an ubuntu touch image for the nook, and i ran across this post.
what i was wondering is if there is a way to install the image to boot off the SD card simular to
the N2A (nook 2 android) image does? i was thinking this way i could test it with out
bricking my nook tablet...
any ideas?
its awesome that someone is taking this on, as it looks like the nook is about to
become history.
thanks
Hey all, sorry I haven't posted much, just wanted to work on this a bit more before posting. I managed to get wifi to work with some terminal junk through adb and ubuntu_chroot. Basically it's not loading a module (wl12xx_sdio.ko) it should be. The network gui still doesn't show anything as of yet. So yes, I will still need to look into it more and check the source files as well. I am uploading a new build and will have instructions for it soon in the dev thread. Wondering if I should move it to the dev forum here
Not sure why, but atm apps have started force closing again. I need to reboot and see if it's somehow related. Seems something else just malfunctioned
UPDATE: Apparently getting the Network Manager GUI to work correctly is pretty simple http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41838135#post41838135
I have updated that post and I suppose I will upload my the build reference. One thing to note, the afterflash file correct the dpi seems to make my screen blank out with the latest Ubuntu builds. Not sure why just yet but it should be simple enough to add a conf file manually until I make some scripts. I have not tried adding security to the network (added wpa2-psk and worked like a charm after restarting the network-manager!) nor messed with hidden ssid's yet.
UPDATE: see Build 5 notes, I hadn't fully updated my ubuntu sources apparently Display seems to work now with newest builds!
Just when I start to get somewhere, they up and change versions on me (saucy now) Testing to see if it works!
UPDATE: Saucy boots!
-Swipe right side of screen to the left to unlock
-Network list shows then apparently goes blank after trying to get on (which I did the second time after a reboot, list stayed second time).
Note that there are two different versions of Saucy out, make sure you currently download from the same links as before (with the word "preview" in the url).
At some point I hope to figure out the missing battery indicator.
hey dejello whats the current news? are you still working on it?
btw saucy does seem to boot, raring seems to be okay
Still waiting for updated porting notes.. I have tried a few things unsuccessfully and will keep going, but this is not dead

thats nice to know keep up the good work :good:
by the way i heard that adamoutler was working on it too, but last thing I heard from him was the ubuntu recovery. wonder if he's still working on it
a little printing mistake there, saucy DOES NOT boot
I support this project and will hop on board if/when this gets closer to completion, or if we can boot off MicroSD :good:
Hey all, haven't forgotten this, am on vacation currently and wilp continue work when I get back

[Q] Some questions about Ubuntu Touch :)

hi guys
1. i want to install Ubuntu touch when I'm back from my holidays. I saw lots of videos showing a nexus 4 running it and it was EXTREMLY smooth. But I only have a Galaxy Nexus. Does it run as smooth as on the nexus 4? Because I'd love that!
2. can someone give me a list or a link on what is currently working and what isn't? I could just find an individual error-list on the ubuntu-website, but not a full list. Because Ubuntu Touch looks very nice to me and I don't want to uninstall it after an hour of using it. I want to keep it on my Galaxy Nexus for a longer time. I use Ubuntu every day on my laptop and I can use the terminal to get the things i want
3. how do you get updates for ubuntu touch? can you download them via terminal or do you have to download a new zip and install it via cwm?
4. is the software center ready or is it still in development?
thanks for answering my questions and helping me! I hope i'm in the right section

1. I don't have a Galaxy Nexus, but I've heard the performance is still very good on it.
2. What ships mostly works, network, camera, audio, etc. We have a growing number of apps available to install via PPA too.
3. You can get most updates via apt-get upgrade on the terminal, though that will soon change when we go to a read-only system partition and Click packages. You will still need to phablet-flash to get updates to the Android parts.
4. There won't be a separate Software Center app for Ubuntu Touch, instead you will have app discovery, purchasing and installation from the Unity Dash itself via the Apps lens. This is waiting on the arrival of Click packages and the associated Scopes.

Thank you very much! It makes me happy to read that. I was fascinated by how far they came in such a short time and how fast the system grows to a perfect OS. I'll give it a try when I'm back
2. Network? 3G-Data too? I heard it doesn't work yet.
3. Read-only system partition? Does this mean i can't do EVERYTHING i want with the terminal like i can on my laptop? But maybe it's better.
I imagine a guy buying an Ubuntu-Phone, playing around with the terminal and deleting everything with a single command
4. So this means: If I have internet-connection, i can simply search for the app i want and it will find it? like in the dash on the desktop? that's a nice idea! I just expected a software-center because I saw a guy on youtube developing it.
But I found some more questions for you :
I heard, that the twitter-app was cancelled because of twitter. Can I still download it somewhere or do I have to wait until they make a new one?
Do some Apps like GMail work?
And the most important question:
Where can I follow the development-process? I already joined "Ubuntu App Developers"-Community on G+, but they only post about apps.
Thank you very much for answering my questions!

2. mobile data works on the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4, I don't know about any other phones.
3. Read-only system partition will be the default, Click packages will install into a read-write user space. Enabling developer mode will set the system partition to read-write as well and give you apt again.
4. Yup, whether it's installed or not, on the phone or on the desktop, you can always find your apps in the Dash.
5. I don't think there was ever any code written for the twitter app, but you can bzr branch lp:ubuntu-twitter-app (same with lp:ubuntu-facebook-app). We still ship the Twitter webapp in the default device image, and that's the one Twitter wanted people to use.
6. The GMail webapp works, yes.
7. Come hang out in #ubuntu-app-devel and #ubuntu-touch on Freenode IRC. Last week, this week and next week we're picking one app per day to focus on with new contributors, so it's a great time to get involved: http://developer.ubuntu.com/2013/07/announcing-the-ubuntu-core-apps-hack-days/

And of course I should mention that if you happen to be at the XDA Developers Conference in Miami next month, I'll be there running a workshop on developing Ubuntu Touch applications and will be happy to answer any and all questions.

7. Thank You very much! I'll follow the hackdays
