Working Google Talk With Video and Voice Chat Support {Skype Coming} - Motorola Photon 4G

Google Talk with Video and Voice Chat officially works on our phones. After hours of chatting with the Atrix devs, and tons of learning throughout the process, we got it done!
You Must Be Rooted!! If you are not, Go buy an HD dock and see this page:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1199098
Anything in BOLD is to tell you what you are going to be doing.
Anything in RED needs to be typed in.
Preliminary Steps:
1. Root your phone using the above link.
2. Delete Talk.apk from your phone
use Root explorer to navigate to /system/app/
locate the Talk.apk file
click "mount as R/W" in upper right corner
long-press Talk.apk and press delete
After you are rooted and have deleted the Talk.apk:
1. Download the necessary lib file
http://www.multiupload.com/3O8RT5EAT5
1.5 Download the Google Talk apk that supports video chat
http://www.multiupload.com/TN67C757KH
2. Open up and ADB Shell as root
adb shell
su
(You should now have a # instead of a $)
3. Remount /system partition as RW instead of RO
/bin/mount -o remount,rw /system
exit
exit
4. Push libtalk_jni.so to /sdcard/
adb push libtalk_jni.so /sdcard/
5. Copy libtalk_jni.so to /system/lib
cp /sdcard/libtalk_jni.so /system/lib/
6. Exit adb shell
exit
exit
You should now be back in your Android SDK folder.
7. Push Talk2.apk to /sdcard/
adb push Talk2.apk /sdcard/
8. Use Root Explorer to install the Talk2.apk
9. After installing, reboot phone and you should be good to go!
Thanks to: Eval-, Crnkoj, and a few others in the Atrix forums for the help on getting this to work!
Now that we all have root access (if you haven't rooted your phone, go buy a dock!), I think it'd be great if the devs could possibly work on getting Google Talk to support the video protocol. After all, we are running 2.3.4 so our version supports it. Also, I remember downloading a modified apk for the Skype app on my E3D and it allowed for video chat... anyway that can be done for us?
Edit: 8/3/2011
I'm currently working on the Google Talk app to get a version which will support our FFC... My phone isn't available for testing because it's a work phone and I need some people (with rooted photon's) to put their babies up to the test. Anything you do can simply be undone with a factory reset... I promise
UPDATE: Got the Apk to install that supports native video chat, but I get FC when trying to use the Video feature. Anyone with any sense of programming further than basic stuff willing to help out?

I was about to ask the same thing.
Also, where do I get a laptop dock so I can root? LOL

Not a laptop dock, it is the HD dock... go to the Sprint store closest to you and they should have them for $130 + tax. There's no restocking fee so you can return it

That's what I meant.....lol I forgot what thread I posted that in
I'm gonna have to check that out, thanks

I agree. I was very disappointed that I cannot talk to people using Google Voice & Video. Heck, I can't even voice chat! Only text.
I installed Fring which lets me do voice chat over Google Talk... but still no video.
What's the point of having a front-facing camera if there's barely any software that supports it?

So my photon isn't available for testing because it's turned into a work phone but I had a theory as to how to get working Gtalk on our phones!

I picked mine up at a Sprint store for $99 + tax then I got the car dock at $59 so the gave me 10% off for the pair ....(Im SERO so only get the 10% off)
If your a sprint premier customer you can get 25% off for the pair ... ($99 + $59 = $158 - 25% = 118.50 + tax)

Already decided to say screw it to work and take the risk with just using my own phone. Need some help with the programming though. All help is appreciated!

Any thoughts on why the feature was disabled in the first place? I thought this was the purpose of the FFC -

Well, got it working... instructions above

I'm waiting to receive my photon. However, I'm so confused to the process.
Is ADB Shell a program?
Also, are we typing the instructions before the "title" of each step?
thanks and sorry for the ignorance...

Or just use the one they have on display at the store for a few minutes if you can find one.

Worked great without using ADB, just moved both files to the locations in the instructions with ES Explorer in root mod.
Damn, that phone is getting better by the minute with all the developers' genius work. Thanks to all involved in making this device a true super phone.

Mods, can we have this moved to the development section?

Does "talk 1.3 installer" in the market not work? It does the exact same thing and its an app. Way easier.

Not that I know of... I just did the write up because it's guaranteed to work

Great write up! I thought I'd also mention, for those that don't want to root their phones (are there really people like this?), you can use Qik for video chat.

HAPPY HOLIDAYYEARS, NEW YEARS, & BEST ALL YEAR AROUND YET!
didn't work for me.
Followed your directions to a T, and it created a 2nd build.prop file. do i need to delete my original build.prop file? I have it backed up of course, but not sure if having 2 throws it off.
Also, is the " ro.product.model=vs910 4g " case sensitive?
It will automatically create a backup of build.prop. as soon as you change those 2 (copy & paste what I did) try to create account again in app, log in, then just restart phone and open app again should say upgraded to 50gb. After that you can create however many for whoever. After Done creating account(s) restore the backup build.prop

dude, you rock! it worked!
I guess it was case sensitive. I incorrectly used all caps, since the original file had all caps. oh well.

I heard awhile back that Dropbox and HTC were partnering up. If that is true, has it happened yet and can we edit the build prop similarly to get more dropbox storage?
AWESOME!!!
This worked perfectly, THANK YOU!
It worked great. 50gb is pretty sweet.
Just a quick question.
I realize on the first post it says good till December 2011.
Now is that how long we have to finish creating the 50gb accounts?
Or is that when our newly created Account will expire?

I'm glad that I explained it good enough. What I'm aware you have till end of the month to sign up & get the free 50gb. When you have it your good .Then after they are going to come up with other promotional deals. I also just found out if you have a account already & sign in with build.prop modified it will automatically bump it up to the 50gb.

Local root method for Nook tablet 8 / 16 GB {WIP} {1.4.2}

Alright, now I am reposting this. I have found a new way to root the tablet (gain adb to run as root) on 1.4.2 so if anyone wants to help me with packaging it to be able to run on the system since we can't sideload (I was thinking a browser exploit or having a file hex edited to launch an intent...) so if you want to help, just comment here.
Full information, binary, and other general h4x will be released when I have everything ready.
Note: This is not just a "write to file" I'm just not giving up what I did yet :x
Tested on 8gb nook tablet.
proof:
Code:
$ echo ro.kernel.qemu=1 > /data/local.prop
echo ro.kernel.qemu=1 > /data/local.prop
C:\Users\Indirect>adb reboot
C:\Users\Indirect>adb shell
# ^C
C:\Users\Indirect>adb shell
# id
id
uid=0(root) gid=0(root)
Updating post since now I actually do have it working in a neat way :x
Updated OP with information. Have a fully working root, just need to be able to launch it against a completely "pure" system in a creative way :x
Yum. Sideloading not being an option, wouldn't the browser need an exploit? Or does the android browser not operate in a sandbox?
honestly, I think if we pull a .png into the gallery that is not a picture, but an intent, then it will run just fine

Congrats on your accomplishment. The thought that comes to mind somehow is an image of someone next to a B&N store and somehow an image of them "Putting the scews to the B&N Store" being incorporated....This is likely no more doable than the suggestion above but.....
A friend of mine told me stegnography is likely for this so we might use a picture to get adb enabled for root.

Wouldn't a .gif file be better? You can hide a whole script or batch file in between frames in an animated gif. I've never tried it but it seems plausible.
I saw this done in WINDOZE years ago. The file was a jpeg. I'll try a search through my old win stuff but I think the catch is what onboard app can you exploit.

Reread op; I missed the mark on this one as you have your exploit. Please ignore!

Ok probably a really dumb question, but I'm not finding an answer.
You say to PUSH the app to system/app folder. What do you mean by this? I'm on a cutom ROM (FastAmaze) and am using ES File Explorer with Superuser access. I can't copy & paste the .apk into that folder.
Do I need to use a different directory app? I'm also not seeing how to change the rights.
Thanks for the remedial help. HA

Ok you have two choices.
You must be rooted.
Please do a nanandroid in-case apps dont work.
Option One:
Save Jelly Bean Apps on your phone.
Download from your phone or from your computer to phone.
>>> Rootexplorer <<<
Install on android device.
Open rootexplorer.
Accept root permission.
At the top click MOUNT R/W until it turns to MOUNT R/O.
Find were you saved the Jelly Beans apps on your sdcard by clicking the sdcard folder.
Long press the app and click copy.
Go back to the Parent Folder.
Click the system folder.
Click the app folder.
Now paste the app you copied from your sdcard.
Find the app that you copied and long press it.
Click Permissions.
Make sure the first the column marked READ has OWNER, GROUP, & OTHERS checked.
Make sure the column marked WRITE has ONLY OWNER checked.
Uncheck everything else.
Press okay.
REBOOT.
Option Two:
If you don't already have it. Install Android Sdk on your computer.
Make sure your correct drivers are installed.
Make sure debugging is on your phone.
Open a command prompt.
Direct your path to the sdk folder.
Ex: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\tools"
Push the apps to system\apps.
Ex: adb push Calender.apk system\app
Dude's got a girl owning 'em on the tech turf, lol. Props to her, don't forget that if you're gonna use ADB to push the files, unless you have a modded boot.img, you'll need to reboot into recovery, mount system partition in the partition menu, then use the adb command: adb remount. And also please put the files you wanna push into your sdk's adb folder, because if you leave it in the folder you downloaded it to and not place it in the sdk folder, you'll be pushing nada to your phone.

No one is smarter than the other, each individual has their own line of interest, this happens to be mine and most dudes, most girls aren't even remotely interested in electronics for anything but show and tell, that's why it's pretty rare to see a girl so way ahead of most guys on a tech forum that goes in depth. [Q] 4.0 Talk apk - sort everyone by availability

EDIT: ANSWERED. See Reply #2.
I can't take this anymore. I've hated it since the day I upgraded to 4.0, but I can't take it anymore.
Google decided that nobody wants to view all buddies and sort by availability at the same time. Apparently, they've never met anyone with a huge buddy list.
How do I make the ICS Talk app sort ALL buddies by availability, not just my most frequently contacted ones? And if I can't, is the 4.1 or 4.2 version capable? If not, will replacing it with the GB Talk.apk do any harm?
Thanks, guys. Google royally screwed up on this one.

I don't know how to make it sort the buddy list the way you want, but you can try reinstalling the gingerbread version (Just make sure you make a nandroid backup first so you can easily fix things if anything goes wrong).

Ohh, thank you, God. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to rooting the Droid 4. I figured it out.
To make Talk.apk sort *everyone* by availability, not just the most popular contacts:
Open Settings -> Apps -> All -> Talk and hit "Force Stop"
Open a root terminal on your device.
cd /data/data/com.google.android.talk/shared_prefs/
edit BuddyListCombo.xml in your preferred root-capable text editor. I used the busybox "vi", but if others exist, feel free to use them.
change the value for "gtalk-view-mode" to 1
change the value for "gtalk-sort-mode" to 0
save file and exit
You should now be able to bring up Talk.apk and see all contacts sorted by availability.
WARNING: DO NOT bring up the "View Options" settings within the app after doing this. Because you can't sort this way from the GUI, anything you do will overwrite the file with one of the three options available in that GUI. You'll have to do this all over again.
Edit: Typo correction
Edit 2: make instructions more generic

[Q] Some questions about Ubuntu Touch :)

hi guys
1. i want to install Ubuntu touch when I'm back from my holidays. I saw lots of videos showing a nexus 4 running it and it was EXTREMLY smooth. But I only have a Galaxy Nexus. Does it run as smooth as on the nexus 4? Because I'd love that!
2. can someone give me a list or a link on what is currently working and what isn't? I could just find an individual error-list on the ubuntu-website, but not a full list. Because Ubuntu Touch looks very nice to me and I don't want to uninstall it after an hour of using it. I want to keep it on my Galaxy Nexus for a longer time. I use Ubuntu every day on my laptop and I can use the terminal to get the things i want
3. how do you get updates for ubuntu touch? can you download them via terminal or do you have to download a new zip and install it via cwm?
4. is the software center ready or is it still in development?
thanks for answering my questions and helping me! I hope i'm in the right section

1. I don't have a Galaxy Nexus, but I've heard the performance is still very good on it.
2. What ships mostly works, network, camera, audio, etc. We have a growing number of apps available to install via PPA too.
3. You can get most updates via apt-get upgrade on the terminal, though that will soon change when we go to a read-only system partition and Click packages. You will still need to phablet-flash to get updates to the Android parts.
4. There won't be a separate Software Center app for Ubuntu Touch, instead you will have app discovery, purchasing and installation from the Unity Dash itself via the Apps lens. This is waiting on the arrival of Click packages and the associated Scopes.

Thank you very much! It makes me happy to read that. I was fascinated by how far they came in such a short time and how fast the system grows to a perfect OS. I'll give it a try when I'm back
2. Network? 3G-Data too? I heard it doesn't work yet.
3. Read-only system partition? Does this mean i can't do EVERYTHING i want with the terminal like i can on my laptop? But maybe it's better.
I imagine a guy buying an Ubuntu-Phone, playing around with the terminal and deleting everything with a single command
4. So this means: If I have internet-connection, i can simply search for the app i want and it will find it? like in the dash on the desktop? that's a nice idea! I just expected a software-center because I saw a guy on youtube developing it.
But I found some more questions for you :
I heard, that the twitter-app was cancelled because of twitter. Can I still download it somewhere or do I have to wait until they make a new one?
Do some Apps like GMail work?
And the most important question:
Where can I follow the development-process? I already joined "Ubuntu App Developers"-Community on G+, but they only post about apps.
Thank you very much for answering my questions!

2. mobile data works on the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4, I don't know about any other phones.
3. Read-only system partition will be the default, Click packages will install into a read-write user space. Enabling developer mode will set the system partition to read-write as well and give you apt again.
4. Yup, whether it's installed or not, on the phone or on the desktop, you can always find your apps in the Dash.
5. I don't think there was ever any code written for the twitter app, but you can bzr branch lp:ubuntu-twitter-app (same with lp:ubuntu-facebook-app). We still ship the Twitter webapp in the default device image, and that's the one Twitter wanted people to use.
6. The GMail webapp works, yes.
7. Come hang out in #ubuntu-app-devel and #ubuntu-touch on Freenode IRC. Last week, this week and next week we're picking one app per day to focus on with new contributors, so it's a great time to get involved: http://developer.ubuntu.com/2013/07/announcing-the-ubuntu-core-apps-hack-days/

And of course I should mention that if you happen to be at the XDA Developers Conference in Miami next month, I'll be there running a workshop on developing Ubuntu Touch applications and will be happy to answer any and all questions.

6. Are all apps gonna be webapps? Or is it just because it's not released yet? Because these Webapps are horrible! All of them.
7. Thank You very much! I'll follow the hackdays
