htc sense use ram also i don't know how much but it's alot. Don't worry about the ram cause the system will end whatever you have open and not using to make more ram.

Alright thanks

I think the gpu probably uses some too which might be why it didn't add up to 1024mb

Possibly, but when I add my used and unused ram together I only come up with
660 which is way short or 1gb ram

I think I remember the EVO 3d with more ram. Like 720 something.

Well, there are plenty of hidden system settings. The number that you see in Task Manager or Settings is how much RAM that can be used for anything. The ram you do not see available is being used by things that are UNABLE to be removed from RAM because they are essential to the system running. That is the reason why we see nothing close to 1GB.same thing goes for computers, you can either see Installed Memory or you can see Usable Memory. Installed Memory on LTevo would be 1GB and Usable Memory on Stock would be around 670MB(IIRC) for me.

I see now it makes more sense now

I noticed this also, coming from the EVO 3d (also with 1gb of ram) vs the 4gLTE. IIRC the 3d shows 804mb total vs 680mb. I figured it had to do with the 3d running gingerbread/sense 3.5 vs the 4gLTE running ICS/sense 4.0. My friend who has a galaxy nexus also with 1gb of ram, shows around the same amount of ram in the task manager.. either way I am absolutely amazed with this phone, not one issue or hiccup so far..

1 gig ram = 833 reality ?

So... the task manager shows 800 mb of ram.. i thought our phones had 1 gig ram ?
Can someone please advise me if the missing 200 is used for sense or something?
That's allocated for the os, I believe.......its the same with the Atrix.

pun intended?

Free memory (ram) inconsistancy

It's been really weird, but in the pull down "quick settings" the free memory will show something like
Total memory: 803mb
Used: 695 Free: 108
Which seems very low.
But if I look at running processes in settings/applications, I get 284 used, 432 available.
So, the questions are:
1. Are these two "memory" values refering to the same thing? They do not add up to the same total.
2. Which one really indicates system resources - I get Sense restarts whenever the quick settings value goes below about 125 - and I don't even know why this should be happening.
3. isn't this phone supposed to have 1gb of ram?
One thing i'm sure about...it is not the app space remaining.
Anyone have any insight?

I should point out that tapping on the memory in quick settings takes you to the running process screen.

i have the same question..
in notifications, it says:
total: 803
Used: 538
free: 265
is this normal? or what is it that is using all that memory?

No... It takes you to the new built in "task manager" app, which is very different for some reason.
I wanna know this as well.... Im kinda paranoid about RAM and thought that 1gb was more than enough, but the htc task manager really dissapoints me when i see what i have free (160-180 average) but i have over 400 free in the stock android process manager.
Which one is more accurate? And why are they so different?

Not sure why these are so inconsistent, but I'm much more leaning towards the built-in Android version through the setting menu.

HTC sense UI , really tho that's why the Samsung galaxy s 2 kick ass on benchmarks , because sense takes a lot RAM , you didn't think this nice looking animations weren't doing anything to your device right ? Is been like that since the EVO days will need to get used to it now

Ahaa.. that makes sense, that sense is using it of course.. you have a point ..

[Q] Total RAM?

Hey so I just bought a used Verizon Galaxy 10.1 and noticed things got pretty slow after a day of use (not rooted) so I went looking into what might be going on. I assumed it was a memory thing and when I did a "cat /proc/meminfo" I was surprised to see only 740912 kb reported for MemTotal. Aren't these devices supposed to have 1GB not 741mb?
Does anyone else see the same number?
think it might not even report the ammount of ram that android itself takes up, but dunno.
In taskmanager there is 723 MB of RAM.
My task manager reports 724M RAM.
Maybe the rest is reserved ?
The rest of the RAM is dedicated to the GPU.

Perfect, thanks for answering. I had a feeling something like that might be going on but wanted to verify.
I think I need to ditch my verizon version and get a wifi only. I want to root this but there's way more development going on for wifi only version.
Yeah the Wi-Fi model is miles ahead in xda support. Roms themes etc.

Question about ram

So I noticed that the lte shows less ram then the 3D anyone know why this is? Thought lte had more

If it is like in the computer world I would guess more of it is going to the GPU or other components in the phone.

Though it says that there is so much of the RAM being "used" in reality only a portion is actually being used. There are many programs that are dormit in memory waiting for you to execute them, by remaining dormit in memory they can run much faster, its in a way caching.
Now if you want to control that, download AutoKiller Memory from the Play Store (https://play.google.com/store/apps/...t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5ycy5hdXRva2lsbGVyIl0.) and you can adjust the way the Kernel manages the dormit apps and free physical memory. Please read the help and the Dev's website for more understanding of the tool and the way Android manages the RAM.
Yeah, it's probably allotted for something else.
I noticed this with the Sense 4 ROMS for the 3D. All of a sudden had like 200mb total of missing RAM by flashing the ROM.

[Q] Quad 1.5 & 1 Gb Ram or Dual 1.5 & 2Gb Ram?

Which one is better?
I think quad-core is a waste if there are no games or app optimized for it. I'd rather have 2gb ram so I can have more ram hogging app open and less automatic app closing.

There is exact same thread in general section people discussing about the issue you are asking hence this thread is not needed. Also quad in gs3 is clocked at 1.4, not 1.5.

I searched it, but didn't find it.
I'm a little iffy about upgrading .. now on G2, 1.2 with 1Gb ram. Is it worth spending the money for only .3 and 1 extra gig of ram?
I believe its the the epic 4g general section
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
If you asked the guy with the exploding quad core I bet he says the dual core with 2gb lol......... But seriously, I'd say you get more use from more ram, for at least the next 6 months anyways, till all the devs start updating their apps to optimize the 4 cores. But I'd still rather have more ram really.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I was asking myself the same question. Im going to go with the us variant, since there arent many apps (if any) optimized for 4 cores yet. I prefer the extra gig though because i run widgets like there no tomarrow
rather have the 2gb of ram...
ram is usually the bottleneck in computers
I like having a suped up dual core with TWO gigs of ram. And LTE , when it's available of course.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda premium
I'd say both quad core and 2GB of ram are overkill.
