[Q] Quad 1.5 & 1 Gb Ram or Dual 1.5 & 2Gb Ram? - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

Which one is better?

I think quad-core is a waste if there are no games or app optimized for it. I'd rather have 2gb ram so I can have more ram hogging app open and less automatic app closing.

There is exact same thread in general section people discussing about the issue you are asking hence this thread is not needed. Also quad in gs3 is clocked at 1.4, not 1.5.

I searched it, but didn't find it.
I'm a little iffy about upgrading .. now on G2, 1.2 with 1Gb ram. Is it worth spending the money for only .3 and 1 extra gig of ram?

I believe its the the epic 4g general section

If you asked the guy with the exploding quad core I bet he says the dual core with 2gb lol......... But seriously, I'd say you get more use from more ram, for at least the next 6 months anyways, till all the devs start updating their apps to optimize the 4 cores. But I'd still rather have more ram really.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium

I was asking myself the same question. Im going to go with the us variant, since there arent many apps (if any) optimized for 4 cores yet. I prefer the extra gig though because i run widgets like there no tomarrow

rather have the 2gb of ram...
ram is usually the bottleneck in computers

I like having a suped up dual core with TWO gigs of ram. And LTE , when it's available of course.

I'd say both quad core and 2GB of ram are overkill.

[Q] HTC Thunderbolt and the upcoming gingerbread (2.3) update

I am not familiar with android os, so i wanted to ask people who have some knowledge behind it a question.
What do you see improving with the thunderbolt when gingerbread gets released?
Do you think the thunderbolt will be able to improve its chances to still stand out against the dual-core phones with the help of 2.3?
I love my thunderbolt, it is my very first Android OS device and i am glad to be an early adopter of the 4g LTE network, i do personally feel that i put myself in a rough position because i chose a phone with a single core. Should i feel this way?
Thanks XDA, i've spent so many hours learning about phones in general on this board. it is my new home!
No, single core is great.
1. Apps must be written to utilize dual core (the thunderbolt can be overclocked to 2ghz, which is much faster than needed)
2. Any phone you buy will be outdated in terms of current technology within 6 months. (Don't compare to other technology. Compare to apps you want to run. There are no foreseeable apps the thunderbolt can't run well)
Imho, dual core is currently just a gimmick to attract buyers and I don't think it will be necessary to own one for about 2 years.
I've used the attic, compared to thunderbolt you can't even notice a speed difference.
As for the usual bionic/thunderbolt debate. I believe the Ram is more important then dual core ATM. And if the bionic really only has 512, the thunderbolt will do perfectly fine stacked against it.

A 1GHz dual core processor is not 2GHz. Its 1GHz, both cores running at 500MHz.

i've played with an Atrix before the TB came out. The dual core did nothing for it. My TB is noticeably faster than the Atrix was. Plus ATT 4G service is a joke.
As far as differences between 22 and 23, check this out:
http://www.differencebetween.com/difference-between-android-2-2-froyo-and-android-2-3-gingerbread/
Probably not alot to to write home about, but i def like the gingerbread keyboard over the froyo keyboard.
Ive never seen a dual core referred to as the speed of the 2 cores added. Every dual core I've heard of refers to the speed of the individual processors. ie, all the new ones (tegra 2, exynos, evo 3d snapdragon) have 2 cores each at 1 ghz
Leading to the equation:
2 x 1 ghz cores != 1 x 2 ghz core != 2 x 500 mhz cores
You have nothing to worry about. The snapdragon CPU is second generation with great performance and low power, and It's coupled with adreno 205 graphics which is very capable. Your phone with be high end for easily 1.5 years matching the other phones out there. I'm not too worried about dual core CPU's yet because no software is taking advantage of it yet. And android OS won't be updated to utilize dual core till version 2.4. So you have nothing to worry about.
Hell my nexus one I still find top notch in my opinion.

Totally agree Roger. The real problem with dual core is Android software is not written to take full advantage of both cores. This was evident when I had a chance to play with my friends LG Optimus 2X. FPS was fantastic on nenamark averaging just below 80. All games in the Tegra zone played great. However, when it came to day to day stuff it lagged. For example, sometimes it took two swipes for the screen to register a touch. Web pages with heavy flash had awful load times.

And while applications might not be specifically written for dual core, the OS is. That alone provides some improvement.
But whatever. Our processor will be fine for quite some time.
And correct, a 1GHz dual core runs at 2x1GHz, not 2x500Mhz
Anyway we're not going to see gingerbread here for at least 4 months

As for the OP, I don't think enough improvements from 2.2-2.3 are going to be done to make it the same as an optimized dual core. Also, I don't think stock HTC Sense 2.3 will have much of a visual difference than stock 2.2 Sense. Once the 2.3 update comes out, I'll probably still stick with a custom ROM that is 2.2 until the 2.3 custom ROM's come out.
What I hope that HTC fixes is the GPS issues. The "fix" that is in the development forum (turning off Google Location Services) has worked wonders for me, but I'm hoping HTC just fixes it in a firmware or software update sometime in the future.

This script was not written for high end devices such as this one... Or anything with a dual core CPU... You might see a difference using a single core but this script was written for Ram management on lower end devices and devices with little ram... Using on a 1.5Ghz dualcore phone with 1GB of ram might imo be a waste of time...

Lol, but last year 1G of RAM was more than enough. Where getting crazy. Duel-Core, and 1G of RAM was perfect, and still is. Quad-Core, and 1G of RAM is Over kill. Just trollin' it up. I'm sticking with Duel-Core until the next Nexus. If Google releases a Quad-Core, then I'll get a GSIII. But as of now, I'm enjoying the "Basic" Duel-Core with 1G of RAM.

I think I remember the EVO 3d with more ram. Like 720 something.
Well, there are plenty of hidden system settings. The number that you see in Task Manager or Settings is how much RAM that can be used for anything. The ram you do not see available is being used by things that are UNABLE to be removed from RAM because they are essential to the system running. That is the reason why we see nothing close to 1GB.same thing goes for computers, you can either see Installed Memory or you can see Usable Memory. Installed Memory on LTevo would be 1GB and Usable Memory on Stock would be around 670MB(IIRC) for me.

I see now it makes more sense now

I noticed this also, coming from the EVO 3d (also with 1gb of ram) vs the 4gLTE. IIRC the 3d shows 804mb total vs 680mb. I figured it had to do with the 3d running gingerbread/sense 3.5 vs the 4gLTE running ICS/sense 4.0. My friend who has a galaxy nexus also with 1gb of ram, shows around the same amount of ram in the task manager.. either way I am absolutely amazed with this phone, not one issue or hiccup so far..

RAM: What it is ? How it is managed ? And Why you shouldn't care about it ?

I see many people on xda posting ridiculous methods of freeing up Ram and frying the phone

Thanks for post. Many users don't know this
I'm waiting for someone to come in to this thread and try to tell us why you need 50 gigs of Ram and how his US variant with 2 gigs of RAM is far superior to the international, I own both so before this even comes to light lets be clear, clean, cut and dry the international version is smoother than the US variant no matter how many of you RAM fanatics want to tell me that 2 gigs is master race. Further Android manages RAM very well on it's own you can probably run just about anything with 512mb of RAM, but a whole gigabyte that's just butter on my toast. I hope people will actually read this thread and learn how their devices work instead of just yelling about how they need more RAM and wonder why they have no battery life when a task manager constantly clears the cache. I would appreciate it if one of the more informed members of XDA can make a simple write up of how Android manages RAM and why more free RAM is not always better :highfive:
Whilst I agree with the comments here it sometimes helps by not being rude to people who aren't as knowledgeable with android as some of us and who are asking questions like I have seen in some threads.
Whilst the adage free RAM is wasted RAM is generally correct with android there is no harm in freezing of uninstalling apps that you know you don't use.
For example I never use svoice and chat-on so there is no harm in freezing those or preventing them from loading if they will never be used.
Whilst unused RAM IS wasted RAM,,, RAM used by unused apps is also wasted ram
Go easy on the noobs and have a good weekend.

If I'm not mistaken the architecture of the version supporting HSPA does not support 2gb, that's why the Korean variant is slightly different and has 2 gigs of RAM, essentially It wouldn't have made any difference, the 32nm a9 process is about as far as it's going to go. (also I think the Korean version has 2 gigs of Ram due to LTE taking up more resources)
op, maybe it is not the issue of free-ing up RAM.. it also save up some battery...
eg: before you went to slp... make sure all are shut down.. and hv a minimal prog open for sync/phone..
of course now all OS have RAM optimism, but then sometime/some of the OS are not so profession on this.
most of the time due to the OS rooted/JB, which will have different methodology for optimizing the RAM.
Well, you can't deny the fact that more ram equals better multitasking. With less than 200mb of free ram after several days of use, my browser has to reload whenever I minimise it to check messages. But that wouldn't be the case if I had more free ram, ie when I've just rebooted the phone.
