[Q] Cyanogenmod 7.1 force closes then reboots - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have had Cyanogenmod 7.1 stable installed on my s2 since December, first time I have had a real issue with it. This morning when I turned the phone on as soon as it gets past cyanogenmod boot logo I get a number of force closes the first is always Calendar storage and then Acore. This is followed by media, superuser, droidstats, email, whatapp, clock, google play, bluetooth share and titanium backup these are in a random order but always the same apps. Once I force close them the phone goes back to the boot logo then the force closes start again,in an endless cycle the phone is pretty much useless. I have access to download mode and clockworkmod but I would just like a way to backup my contacts and sms messages before I do a factory reset, or possibly a fix for the issue?
Any help appreciated =)

Plenty of apps on Google Play that enable you to backup/restore your contacts/SMS/call logs. I'd definitely do a factory reset.

I have apps installed for backup purposes but the FC's messages don't allow me to access them =/

Hmmmm. OK. That's a problem then.
I guess you could try flashing CM7 over the top of your current setup & hope that fixes things but it probably won't. So you could do a Nandroid backup in CWRecovery then do a factory reset or do a completely clean/fresh install, and from there you could use something like AppExtractor to restore your contacts/SMS/call logs from your Nandroid.

I attempted to recover a old backup but a got an error of md5 mismatch in clockworkmod. I have created a backup of the current system but the same error pops up if I attempt to recover, I did this to check if the backup wasn't faulty. Will I still be able to use the appextractor with this error?
If I can ill attempt a clean install of 7.2 that just got released and recover my contacts in the way you suggested =)

Good question. I don't know. Couple of times I used AppExtractor when I was running GB I didn't have any of the problems you're experiencing so I guess you're only going to know when you try it.

What have I done?

I've flashed the task650 and phantom rom. Then installed titanium back up from the market and restored all of my apps. It then said that the android launch error has stopped or something.
What have I done wrong and how can I fix it?
Did you also let TiBu restore all your settings as well? or JUST the apps? Did you restore an app that was included in the ROM?
When switched ROM's you should only restore apps that are not on the device already. You also should be careful with all settings that you restore as well.
For me, I restore the missing apps, that I still want, with data along with accounts, BT pairings, and WiFi settings. That's it.
---------- Post added at 09:00 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:59 AM ----------
Oh, and to fix it, I would just hard reset your device, verify that all is running as it should, and then begin installing your apps again.
This is what I think the sequence of what I have done is.
-Obviously rooted my tablet.
-Backed it up with Rom manager and copy and pasted the back up to my PC as well as the back ups of the apps and settings from titanium.
-Downloaded and transferred the task650 and phantom rom to my tablet.
-Flashed it and deleting the cache and dalvik etc in the process.
-Followed the process of not selecting google during the factory reset and changed my wifi settings and synced google once the flash had finished.
-I then went to the market place and reinstalled titanium from their and restored the apps and data.
-It was at that point when I could not get back onto the android desktop (if thats what its called.)
Now when I click the power button I can unlock it and it brings up this box:
Sorry! The application Launcher (process.com.android.launcher) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. Force close or report.
If I hold the power button I see a recovery option with rom manager icon and a download option.
So to answer your question I did let TiBu restore setting as well because I am a total noob. I more than likely did restore an app that was in the rom.
I can't really see if all is running as it should because if I force close the error message it just goes blank and brings the error back up.
I haven't bricked it have I? I hope to god this is fixable.
You are not bricked. I would just follow the steps again on the Task650 and Phantom thread to re-flash the ROM, and just start over. Once you have re-flashed, then reinstall TiBu and then begin restoring only the missing apps with their corresponding data. DO NOT RESTORE any settings or any apps that are already in the ROM unless you know specifically that they are safe to restore (MOST ARE NOT).

Thanks for your help I'm back on ok after a hard reset. I think its back to the way it was before I restored apps and data off tibu.
Im already on the task and phantom rom after the reset so do I need to still reflash the rom?
I'm not really bothered about reinstalling apps, but is their any I should restore?
Would downloading an app from the market I had on the previous rom cause problems?
No, you do not need to re-flash if the hard rest took care of your problem.
The only apps to NOT restore are the ones that are already on the ROM, as that may cause a conflict. Apps that you have downloaded from the market in the past, and that are not currently in the ROM should be ok to restore with TiBu.
Again thanks you have been very helpful.

Correct. To be safe don't restore any system settings or system apps. these show green in titanium. This error if from restoring sudden data on launcher. Task snuff phantoms tom uses a different launcher from stock touchwiz.

Thanks.
I've just left it as it was to be safe, was not to bothered about my apps or settings anyway I'm happy to start over.
So to avoid anything going wrong in the future, do I not update my tablet?

Hmm ... really strange.
Maybe a problem with your Google account.
But disappearing system apps ... ?!
If you have got a recent system backup, then recover it.
If not, I recommend to re-install a stock ROM (flashing with Odin).
Do a hard reset after flashing.
Root your phone (e.g. flashing CF-Root kernel).
This should bring back the missing system apps.
Good luck !
Whit a hard reset, you mean a factory reset, right?
And no, no backups
there is no way to reinstall those apps?

Hard reset: Dial *2767*3855# into your phone.
This will wipe internal SD card!
EDIT:
Please do a full system backup in future!
I backup my apps with Titanium Backup (free app from the Market) and make a system backup with CWM Manager app (which is included in my CF-Root kernel).
i'll be sure to do that next time, i wanted to do a Nandroid backup after rooting, but i kept delaying it... until it was too late
i guess i can backup my user apps now with Titanium, or should i just start from blank with a stock rom?
flashing the stock rom will also bring back the stock kernel?

Yes, the ROM contains kernel, modem and CSC.
You can restore all user apps you have saved with Titanium Backup.
Do not restore any system app.
Just to be safe.

[Q] Apps are force closing after data restore - Titanium Backup

Hello, I've a problem that is recurrent in the Galaxy S forum... and maybe somewhere else!
When I do a backup with TB, it goes fine.
Then I flash a new rom, restore with TB. When app is restored, everything's fine, but when I restore data, every app is force closing... This is really annoying if I want to get back my apps settings...
If someone has a fix, I'd appreciate a lot !
Thanks a lot guys !
Are you restoring system data? That can cause major issues. Just click restore missing apps when restoring.
Your settings are saved in misc. Data, and back that up, then restore that, and you can flash to your heart's content.
Sent from my LG-E739 running CM9 Nightlies
I'm not restoring system data, just app data.
APK backup is just fine, but when i'm restoring my data, it's totally messed up !
Same issue with me
Sounds like I'm in the same boat. The TI data restores don't work. I have not backed up or tried to restore system data. If I wipe data for an app, it runs fine. If I restore data, it force closes.
I've tried clearing cache and fixing permissions, but no luck.
I just upgraded from ASKP Milestone 5 to build 38 (VZ Fascinate).
Just Restore Apps, instead of together
Hi, Perhaps app's data somehow related to previous ROM thingy. New ROM might comes with different features which makes apps shown in different layouts and data presentation. That might have been the cause. So just reinstall ONLY WITH APPS ONLY. Data typically like saved memory/cookies in your phone. So data can be remade by reopen apps Hope helps

If this helps or convinces you, pls kindly hit thanks button.
Will try rollback to Milestone 5

Thanks for the reply. I don't see how in incremental release of the same ROM would be the issue. Yes, I couild install the apps only, but that would defeat the purpose of using TI in the first place. (And, I have nearly 200 apps.)
Tonight, I'll roll back to AOKP Milestone 5 and see if it works. If not, I'm wondering if the update to TI this week may have had anything to do with it.

Oh, if thats the case, are you restoring data including some system data into different rom? Perhaps you can give a try:
1.Wipe the data for that app
2.Launch the app again. It should run normally but without any data (eg: zero MMS/SMS messages).
3.Enable the "System data migration" option in Titanium Backup
4.Restore the data with Titanium Backup
5.Reboot.
Source of method:http://www.titaniumtrack.com/kb/tit...ystem-app-FC-when-launch-restored-system-data
Hope this helps. Pls kindly hit ''Thanks'' button if you can
sincerely,

If someone could say if this works?
I'll give it a try when i'll flash again a rom, but for now i reverted back to mine
I went back to M5 and had the same issue. I had not backed up or restored and system data. Same problem whether restoring via batch or individual app.
If I create a new backup, I can restore it ok. So, seems that the last full restore I did was corrupt.

I didn't understand what you did to avoid the problem...
May you explain it again?
Also, i contacted titanium backup team, they asked for a logcat of my phone doing restore, flashing and backup... Can someone help me with that?
I didn't actualy fix the problem. I just proved that my previous backup was corrupt or something. I know this because I cannot restore the backups I made before wiping the phone. However, if I make a new backup, I'm able to clear data/restore it with no issues.
I've never pulled logcat files for TB, so can't help you there.

Getting important data (call logs, whatsapp messages etc) from CWM backup?

I'm having an issue right now. Somehow made my device go into constant bootloops [edit: not bootloop, but rather the boot animation plays forever] (I was on temasek rom, and kernel, flashed boefffla, came back, somehow after a few various flashes). Now I get bootloop even when all I do is install the rom, without a custom kernel. Made a CWM backup from that, and restored to an old backup.
Now is it possible for me to extract the relevant data from my newly made CWM backup? I only need stuff like call logs, whatsapp messages, messages and etc.
PS. Currently making the CWM backup. I tried to resolve the bootloop by wiping cache, dalvik cache but to no avail. Gonna factory reset and restore to an old CWM backup soon.
Hey
( I havent tried this but) u can use philz recovery..it has an option for custom restore..

Philz recovery you can use advanced restore to restore data from a backup but I don't think you can restore single app data (I maybe wrong on that) I have used it a few times without any problems. Also the paid version of Titanium Backup you can restore individual apps from a backup:good:As for the individual data not sure but I presume if you restore the apk it will restore the data for these apps..Maybe somebody knows a little more
Have a look for "Nandroid Manager" in the play store.
I haven't used it so can't comment on how well it works...

Any data in a backup can be extracted so long as that data isn't corrupt. Multiple "nandroid explorers" available

Thanks guys. Used nandroid manager, and got my smses from it. Well, second time I'm facing this issue on Temasek rom. Reinstall of the rom, kernel, resetting kernel settings does nothing.
Looks like I have to reset my device to factory AGAIN for the second time in 2 days.
This is crazy. I gotten this issue no less than 10 times on CM10.2 Maybe I should go up to CM11 again, but 4.4 has so many incompatible apps (easy voice recorder for me).
Nandroid manager doesn't work properly. It says "success" on restroring whatsapp, but doesn'tactually work right, since when I test it by uninstalling whatsapp first, and then restoring using the nandroid manager, it asks me to reverify my number when I open the app. (if it restore properly, it should not ask you to reverify number, like in TitaniumBackup)
why dont u try to do it with titanium? i guess it should be easier

[Q] Error while restoring data CVM 5.5.0.4 - Temasek CM 10.2

Hi all !
I need your help because I'm really desperate.
My phone was working fine but I had some error with Handcent application.
I decided to restore a previous nandroid backup (that I had previously successfully restored) but now I've got an "error while restoring data" after a long time working.
Tried to do 3 wipes (data factory, cache, Dalivk), but same issue.
Tried with some other backups, same issue.
I'm really lost....
Is there any way to get me out of this ? :crying:
My phone is now unusable.
When I run the phone after restoring faultly, it asked me my google account, as if it was the first time I was running the phone, and not all applications are installed.
When I try to install missing applications with Google Play, I've got an error, and no way to restore from Titanium Backup, no error but freezes.
Please HELP !
Flash your firmware using Odin or recovery, if the backup is corrupt then it can't be fixed.
Thanks, but this backup was OK last time I've restored it, and I had the same issue with some other recent backups.
It appears that the size was too big, over 2,5GB.
I've restored from a 2,41GB backup and it has worked.
The mistery is why I was able to restore from this backup one time, and now does not work anymore...
