I've had Android since the HTC hero on sprint, moved to the Evo Shift, got the nexus S, and now the new evo.
This phone is incredible, but I'm just bored as hell. Does anyone else get really bored with their phone?
I'm thinking of selling this and buying an iPhone, only because it finally somewhat caught up to android and it's just different.
How much do you think I should sell this phone for? Also, if I did want an android after the iphone, the iPhone has amazing resale value and thats just attractive as well.

Iphone 5 isnt that bad. its got a solid processor thats better than the current s4.
The build quality has also always been really good too.
Well, the glass panel on the back was a poor decision but overall I agree on build quality

The Iphone 5 processor is better than the s4? Sure, on paper it looks nice but I personally won't make that call until I get to use them side by side. The s4 is such a good processor that even Samsung uses it in the us version of the galaxy 3. I'm not an apple fan, but in fairness, they make nice devices. To each their own.

Hey Joe, I been with Apple iPhone since the iPhone 3G-3GS. I got all into it and started to learn the process for jailbreaking. Let me just tell say, it was fun but like every customization. Not everything works! Due to the jailbreaking team catching up on the random iOS updates. Long story short.. When the iPhone 4 came out I was one of the few to get it the first day. It was a pretty good change at the time coming from the 3G. It took Apple two years to come out with the iPhone 5. I was waiting for the world wide conference to see if it will finally bring a change to the table. After seeing that it still looks like the iPhone 4 and will not surpass a big difference in performance like the iPhone 4S. I made the jump to Android over this past weekend. I knew I was because I had my doubts about Apple just trying to make more money. The reason I knew was making the change was because a few months back when the Samsung Galaxy S2 was at its peak I was a proud owner of one for about 3 months. While having a iPhone 4 and a Android device I quickly began to tell the difference in how advance Android phones were about. The screen size, the none laggyness, the performance was amazing compared to any iPhone. My girl now flows with the iPhone 4S. And to tell you the truth, yes its responsive but it still lacks in the department of performance. For me it lacks in two major factors! Free to customization and screen size. Plus the fact of having such a noob "user friendly" OS system is crap. For crying out loud, even my grandma is rocking an iPhone. It sucks that Apple is changing the way we communicate because of their well established campaign! (For the older crowd to get in the action too) lol... So yea my story simply is justifying that being a long term 4+ years user of a iPhone product. I'm here to say I'm done from their marketing scheme. Everybody has problems with Apps and their phones. But if you know how to run them correctly and are tech like you will not have a issue with any software or build. But what Apple is bringing to the table with these iPhones upgrades does not compare to what HTC EVO or any Android device done so far and will continue to do so. I suggest to see it for your self. But I am also saying, you will not be in for surprise. Except for two important updates they made to Two Apps. (youtube & facebook) Like I said, there is a reason why these two main apps on Android runs like shyt and on the iPhone they run great ever since like a month ago. (its all a scam, Apple are Gangsters with Suites On) Apple paid a big lump to Facebook & YouTube to recreate/renew their Application faster. For the purpose of being First in line. Mark Zuckerberg gave him self away by announcing on Facebook "how great the new update on the iPhone is recreated by his team" Trust me it should not take Android a million years to create "renew" these two Apps. But for some reason they are. Main reason should be: THEY ARE UNDER CONTRACT. That being said, I think the main two Apps you will enjoy more on the iPhone will be Facebook, & YouTube. Dam I wrote a lot..Or should I say, Ranting.
So in conclusion:

I'm the same way. As I write this I have 2 original evo's, a Thunderbolt, a Fascinate, 2 MiFi's, a Nexus 7 and the new iPad sitting around me. I do some phone flashing so thats why I have a couple of the phones but they are all mine...oh yea and my EVO LTE. I get bored easily too. I'm getting an iPhone 4 Friday because I'm getting a great deal on it and just want something else to play with. I'm thinking about getting a 5 if I can do a little trading for one. I ported my number to Google Voice when they started offering it so I could switch carriers with easy. Bottom line...I'm a Tech junkie just like you. I need my next fix!!!!
U know, when apple was coming up they had that commercial during the superbowl where people were being brainwashed in q black and white theatre. Then "Apple Zeus" or who ever it was smashed thru the screen and made everything color. Revolt and Revolution was rampant of course.
It's funny how sides have changed. Apple is now the establishment trying to brainwash everyone. Android is the new Apple as far as ingenuity is concerned.
Matter of fact, android doesn't even need Apple. Phone manufacturer's compete well enough on android to spurn innovation.
i mean android did completely change initially before the g1 when the iphone came out, It was going to be a blackberry style phone.
Apple did a great job introducing something new in the world, but android constantly changes.
The first iphone looks like the 6th one.
the G1 looks nothing like the Gnex. Android changes so much and keeps getting better and more unique with time.

I'm sure this thread will be closed soon but it's obvious by their own commercials...S 3 commercials keep showing off brand new features while iPhone commercials simply show things that have been around for awhile on Android phones and some are even features available on previous iPhones...examples...they talk about the screen size being prefect fit for one hand operation...the fascinate came out 2 years ago with that screen size so nothing groundbreaking...panoramic pictures...been around for years, including the iPhone 4s...new maps app...iphone users are bashing it more than iphone haters...reply to calls with texts...i had that feature on a palm treo like 4 years ago...
Let's face it...if Apple can't even find something new and groundbreaking to base commercials on, then the choice should be clear...Android

I've been following the new Lumia 920 since it was first rumored. Even after it was officially announced and the massive disappointment set in that it had nothing remotely close to the Pureview sensor, the saving grace was the optical stabilization and the idea of getting a smartphone with actual next-gen imaging capabilities that was a clear improvement over the same generic 8MP shooters the competition had been recycling for over two years. I checked google every day for "lumia 920", setting it to 24hrs and looking at the first two pages. However, the weeks turned into months, and even though there is a tentative November release date, the competition has already wrecnhed away a significant part of my interest in the Lumia, now that the holiday wars are starting. They should've never thought getting in the fray at this heated time would be a smart move.
When the Lumia 920 was announced, the best thing around was the Galaxy S III and the One X, both of which had already been a few months old and neither of which I liked. The One X I owned and wasn't wowed by. The Galaxy S III, another plasticky Samsung phone with a gaudy AMOLED screen that I had grown weary of after owning a half dozen Samsung phones prior. The iPhone5 came and went and I never cared for it either. Sony offerings were still a joke, and LG was half-hearted with the Optimus 4x. The Lumia 920 was the only one on my list. It was a guaranteed buy.
However, Nokia just kept pushing its luck, squandering their advantage, and now it's holiday season and the big guns are coming out with their 2012 Q4 lineup. LG has their Optimus G and even better Nexus 4 coming out. Motorola with their Razr M and Razr HD. HTC with their gorgeous looking 5" 1080p screen on the DNA/Butterfly. Sony with a possible Nexus 5. Asus and it's padfone 2. And other brands like Oppo throwing their hat in the flagship ring.
Windows Phone 8 is looking archaic in comparison. Microsoft still refuses to demo the rest of the UI. What can be seen looks no different than WP7 aside from more live tiles crammed in front. The slickness of the UI is basically a moot point by now. Android has reached parity with their quad-core phnoes, even without the help of JellyBean. The transitions on many of the custom skins are more complicated but just as smooth as any of the stark flying stuff on Windows Phone. This wasn't true a few months ago, when only the Galaxy S III's touchwiz looked truly smooth and all other Android phones, like the One X for example, couldn't quite make it. This smoothness is accompanied by far more functionality, with notification centers and widgets and everything else Android is known for. Windows Phone's signature smoothness, once a breath of fresh air from the choppy Android, falls to the wayside, and now there's nothing of real substance that makes it stand out above the Android competition.
The two traits of the Lumia 920 that kept me waiting for it are slowly losing their luster. The build quality is grand, but at this point I am fine with anything NOT Samsung made, and there are lots of premium quality phones to choose from. The harder one to swallow is the PureView camera, especially its top-class nightshot abilities. However, the 8MP camera really isn't better than anything out there, if you have a steady hand. I will lose the splendid night-taking abilities, but on further thought it really isn't that important to have to begin with. The biggest standout on Android phones right now is how big the screens can get while still maintaining such a small size with their thin bezels.
The Lumia 920 really needs to get released soon, and at a very competitive price.
I believe it will fail and we may see the slow death of Nokia. Android is getting stronger by the day and as much as I was tempted by a W8 phone I can't see myself leaving Android. Jellybean has bought many improvements things like Google Now and such.
The rumoured price for the L920 is high, higher than some top end Android phones!
Again we will need to see what WP8 offers because at the moment there are loads of core apps missing.

I use android phones on daily basis and also from time to time my ip5. But will for sure get the 920, still looks damn sweet to me. And wp8 will be fun play around with for a change..
That doesn't say i not gona get the new nexus, htc, lg tho... but that is just android so not mutch new that will make me drool.

I have also stopped waiting and have ordered the Gnote 2 instead.
Aside from the build quality, camera, there really isn't anything that special the 920.
Windows Phone 8 is the same as WP7, with the new features being Microsoft merely playing catchup to Android- eg yay we now have NFC, microsd cards, drag and drop...Android has had this since the start...
More importantly, there is no app ecosystem with Windows phone and IF this is going to change (it probably will eventually), its going to take at least 12 months, in which time I'll reassess the latest Nokia flagship then.
For example, medical apps are pretty much non existent on WP with no plans from any of the big players to branch out into a market which has <4% market share. Even if this doubles in the next 12 months...8% is not a huge reason for devs to work on the platform.
Imo its too little too late from Microsoft...they're barely competing on quality with android and they're definitely not competing on price (which they could but won't)..so what's left?
In the meantime I will surely love my Gnote2 and reassess everything in 12 months

I don't get it. How is the Lumia losing due to delays? The WP8 OS isn't even released yet (as in officially announced as released). Wasn't intended to be released until the PC OS was released (which was yesterday) and the announcement for WP8 is Monday.
Now, Lumia is not being released by AT&T until November 11th. I don't see how this is really founded.
The price point rumored will be $149 for upgrade so I think that is a VERY affordable price.

Outright price is rumoured to be $700 which is greater than the Gn2.

Yeah, it was announced back then. Windows 8 was announced long before that. Nokia may have been a little early on announcement, but to say that it has been plagued with delays in pretty unfounded as no firm dates were announced until the Windows 8 release date was announced. None of those dates slipped.
As for the outright price point, no firm announcements, but the HTC 8X is coming in at $599, so I would imagine it would be around there or a little higher.
I prefer this over the GN2, simply because I'm starting to get bored of android, but the 920 is a beautiful device anyway. Can't wait and the delays don't really bother me if I'm honest.
Dont get me wrong, I love the phone too and think the hardware is absolutely gorgeous
However, I can't bring myself to use a platform which is so underwhelming and unsupported by the developer community.
From someone which has direct access to the sdk- Wp8 is going to be the same as wp7 with catch up features to Android (eg micro sd support) + skydrive sync + kids corner + rooms. Nothing special.
As someone who was completely underwhelmed by Wp7, this along with the lack of apps isn't enough to get me to jump to Wp8 despite my boredom with android as well.
In 12 months the platform will hopefully mature more, at which point I'll take a look at the Nokia 930 or whatever second gen phone it brings out then.
I am still getting it. Actually got in on the pre-order with best buy for 599 retail. Loved my Note but shelved it and returnded my ip5 and sold my gs3 for the Lumia 900 and happy. The 920 will be the tits
A smart person will wait a few months and see how the platform develops. I'd love to get one on release day probably get one sim free off Amazon with returns period of 30 days then see how the platform does actually develop.

Maybe if your coming from Android or IOS that may be the case. If you have a windows phone already its a no brainer. Windows 8 is fantastic I think so I see wp8 doing well. Won't knock of Android or IOS but Blackberry is in deep trouble.
I've owned a WP7 phone before. The Samsung Focus Flash. Was not impressed. I also played around alot with the Nokia 900. It's nice and slick and all that, but once you get past the superficial stuff, there isn't much underneath. I recently downloaded Letterpress for my iPad. Some reviewers were claiming it was the new Words with Friends. It had a very Metro inspired UI. It was slick and cool for a good minute. Then it got boring, and I found out I couldn't chat with players, do rematch games, and it wouldn't even notify me about games I lost. It made a great analogy for WP in general.
Honestly I still really like the Lumia 920 style and build. The 900 was great too. If only they weren't running WP7/8. I like super-solid and seamless unibody phones that look good. I also cannot sacrifice camera. Nokia is really the only true contender in this regard. HTC has a softer, more baggy version of a unibody polycarbonate phone, and a franky terrible camera (in my eyes only apparently). LG, Sony, and Samsung don't cut it in the build and style side. Motorola has good build, but man are their phones butt-ugly. Terrible camera as well. Build + Camera = Nokia.
But all the other factors come into play and you can't throw away everything else on your priority list just for the top two. If the Lumia 920 was running Android, it would drastically change the game and my perception of its value. Sadly, they are persevering still with WP, and MS hasn't stepped it up to make it compelling besides wasting money on pathetic attack ads.
BTW to the people who say the phone wasn't delayed. Yes we knew WP8 wasn't gonna get released until late 2012 and no official dates were set for the phone release. That's not the point. There was this great stretch of a few months after the Galaxy S III launch that Microsoft could've taken to its advantage. That's why I say they squandered it. It's not an official delay, but for everyone involved, the people waiting, and the people selling, it is an unfortunate time to release it now. Even the iPhone5 was saying "hey! I'm gonna cut you some slack! Even though I'm gonna sell millions, I'm gonna tinker a bit with my factories, add a bit of scuffing, and delay full production til later in the year! You can have a head start and woo over the handful of my followers who are tired of looking at my backorder page! And that second wave of Android phones hasn't arrived yet! Don't waste the chance!" If Microsoft is still thinking it can compete in a face-to-face battle with iOS and Android, its future is doomed.
If you follow video game releases, you will know that a flood of games are also released around the holiday months, late Oct-Nov-Dec. The saturation of games makes it difficult for many lesser known games to stand out. They get trampled by the big name franchises. That's why so many are delayed to January and February, even though they are finished products. Microsoft doesn't have the luxury to delay it til next year. Unlike video games, in the smartphone world, you have to live at the bleeding edge, or become obsolete. Nokia's hardware is basically being dragged down by Microsoft's software. Why is Windows Phone still incomplete after years of development and then an additional two years already on the market? And billions spent?
Then there's Microsoft's problem of trying to confuse consumers by flooding the market with half a dozen similar sounding and not wholly compatible products. Windows 8. Windows Phone 8. Windows RT. Microsoft Surface. Microsoft Surface with Windows RT. They are somehow suppose to synergize with each other by being released all at once. If I wasn't so well read on all of these things, I would be hopelessly lost. In the sea of Microsoft ads, you just might remember something yellow and shiny. Is it a phone? A tablet? A deskop operating system? Or was it the other way around? Youtube and Hulu are being flooded with Windows 8 et al. right now. The only good thing is that they are overspending my local GOP SuperPAC's attack ads. So tired of listening about America turning into socialist Russia.

+1 I'd buy the phone in an instant if it ran android.
Nokia would easily usurp HTC and its uninspiring designs if it was in the Android game. Samsung has gotten so far ahead now that IMO only Nokia can be a true rival.
Of course they need to get on board Android first...which I can't see happening with Elop at the helm.

I am selling my Galaxy Note 2 that I have had for a couple weeks (international version) to get the Lumia 920. I have owned just about every phone in the AT&T lineup and am bored with both the iphones and androids. Time to mix it up.
I currently have a Microsoft Surface, Lenovo Yoga 13, and a Samsung Ativ 500t on order to play around with the latest products for Windows. Exciting time for us geeks for sure.

People are drinking the Apple and Samsung kool-aid
Made some terrible decisions, invested heavily in audio beats. Got very complacent and gave the initiative to Samsung who took it both hands and ran with it.
Launched poor products no sd card, no removable battery latter not end of the word.
HTC one x was good but they shot themselves in the foot by not including ext sd card.
HTC will have to get a move on with htc j butterfly if they want to win back their fans from Samsung.
HTC J butterfly can turn it around for them if they sort themselves out.
I would go back to htc in a flash since their products look better then the plastic polished crap Samsung use.
btw I'm using galaxy note 2, best phone on the market, which I'm very happy with but hate the plastic crap.
Samsung and Apple both produce one core line of phone and push it across all carriers, at least for their main line phone. HTC produces custom phones and is inconsistent with there phones. They've produced top, middle and bottom tier phones which give consumers mixed feelings and not a consistent experience access the board. I think Samsung has done better at marketing to. HTC has great phones, and I believe the Chinese government will prop them up if they have to, they will bounce back.

Focus one tablet, phablet, phone and that's it. I'm sure they will win over business unless Samsung drop their plastic craps.

Just basing this comment on some of my own experiences. I've never owned a Samsung so I can only go from what I've read/heard.
Currently on a Rezound and prior to that was the Dinc, Droid X2, Droid 2 Global and OG Droid (no particular order) Oh and the wife's iPhone 4S. Now some of my reasons, this is by far the WORST battery I have ever had. The Dinc wasn't terrible but I did expect more.
I believe part of the reason is the overlay of Sense. I loved it when I first used it now I'm just tired of it and I'm sure others are as well. You don't get the true experience of the Android OS which is extremely noticeable with the release of ICS. Lets not forget if your running true ICS and what a little Sense flavor there are countless Widgets to download.
Pile on everything mentioned above and you have a receipe for disaster.

Typically, profits fall when a number of situations occur, all of which affect the bottom line and make investors unhappy.
1 - Fixed costs are too high relative to sales - the cost of running the business (people's salaries and benefits, office space, etc.)
2 - Sales are lower than forecasts - competitors took market share away that HTC was planning on having but didn't get (Apple, Samsung, etc.)
A way to offset high fixed costs is to move jobs to countries where labor costs are lower for salaried and hourly jobs. The trend with tech companies is to establish facilities in China near the supply base. Not only do you reduce fixed costs, but you also reduce freight costs - freight on board is reduced (the transit time for inbound materials to the manufacturing facilities is significantly reduced so money isn't tied up into materials while the materials are being shipped point to point), expediting costs aren't as much of a necessity because materials aren't traveling half way around the world if production was in North America but materials are coming from Taiwan for example... There are a lot of pluses from a corporate profit standpoint as you can see.
When sales are lower than forecasts, quarterly earnings targets are missed and investors never like to see that. Investors have a major interest in quarterly projections and in companies being able to hit their targets. Investors are very quick to leap to conclusions about a company's future when a quarterly report announces that targets have been missed. Stock prices are adversely affected and investors look at other options that can make them more money. If quarter after quarter, the story continues to be consistent, the company's Board of Directors starts to get antsy and they put major pressure on the CEO and CFO to get back on track. Many C-level executives lose their jobs because of quarterly and annual losses. Talk about pressure!
Investors want to see profits that not only meet expectation, but they also want to see smart decisions being made for long term profitability. I haven't personally followed HTC's news but I'm concerned with the recent declaration that HTC isn't doing well financially. I'll be checking out some facts this weekend so thanks for the post!

I completely agree. I think it's the main problem with Android distribution method. If each carrier only had a handful of devices, the better.

I agree with this. If HTC went to a few flagship models, and they used those hardware models for all the carriers, they could focus more on getting those smartphones right, with both hardware and software.
I know people don't want to hear this but as someone who absolutely loves Android, I still feel that apple makes a hell of a device. I would like to see HTC use the resources that are so spread out currently, and focus on making a few top tier phones that are of that same build quality as the iPhone or the couple of Android phones that came close over the years.
But I also feel that way about Android in general. I would like to see Google start to have higher standards for devices from manufacturers, and instead of making android work good on a million and one devices, make it work incredibly well on a smaller number of devices.

Too many android devices. With every different brand putting out new phones every couple months, there will be large fluctuation in any company profits.

So, I've owned only Android devices since I began buying smartphones and tablets, but I really feel like very little has changed with regards to Android's performance ever since the Snapdragon 800 in 2013. Even the addition of more RAM and higher-spec processors hasn't really changed much about the AOSP experience, and my old (GPE-converted) Galaxy S4 still feels like I could throw most anything at it.
With the Nexus 6P finally bringing the last few things I really wanted in a mobile phone (the fingerprint sensor, metal, 1440p AMOLED, pure Android without compromising the camera, USB-C), I'm really thinking that this may be my last Android phone for a long while. I feel like, while equally unnecessary, the N6P will offer the pinnacle of stock Android, while rounding out the feature set of all I look for. I was debating whether to cheap out and buy a N5X for dev and general mucking about, but I think I will instead commit to getting the 6P for the above reasons.
My last upgrade to the G3 was almost unnecessary, even though I love the phone. I only upgraded, since my S4's power button broke and headphone jack got a bit wonky. Had that not happened, I think I'd be still using it today as my DD. I didn't even feel the itch to upgrade to any of this year's devices (except the Nexus phones and the buzz around the fp sensor and camera), and I've already had the device for more than a year.
While it may be an unpopular opinion around these parts, I think I may switch to an iPhone (probably the 7+) when my contract is up just to see how that platform improves over the next couple of years. A second GB of RAM totally changed that phone, which shows just how behind they are in some aspects, and where potential lies. I just don't see Android making any earth-shattering changes, mostly because it doesn't need to anymore. OEMs drive their own crap update cycle by bogging down their updates and the like, a problem which never existed on my GPE-converted S4, and won't exist on the Nexus.
Don't really know why I felt like making this post, but I did. :silly:

You did something to your phone in order to be fast / smooth / etc. While we as a community continue to do this and find ways to improve everything.. Android (stock) has come a long way.

You reasoning for this is there is nothing really new on Android and Android phones haven't really evolved much but the same goes for iOS. This coming from someone who keeps going back and forth from Android to iOS. iOS is much more polished and needs less specs to run smooth, but you also have to remember they only have to worry about support their own hardware. And while yes, there has been phone upgrades from Apple (bigger screen, etc.), this is stuff Android has been doing for a long time.
It's kind of hard honestly.. after a certain point.. development / upgrades happen slower.. when jumping from phone to phone now, things don't seem like much of an upgrade. I think that's because we upgrade phones so often now, we don't notice the differences as much. But say you had to keep your S4 for another year without the ability to root / install a custom ROM, I'm sure you'd be all over the N6P.
While XDA has made Android development much bigger and contributed in a positive way, it has also kind of spoiled us and made us think the way you are.
For me the big things that keep me on android are customization and the ability to do what I want with the phone (not what Apple or anyone else wants me to do). I would love to say this would be my last phone for a while but 2 things will prevent that....

2. Android support is 2 years
Well, the LG G3 isnt the best phone... you'll probably like the Nexus 6P a LOT!
I said that with the Nexus 6. I might still keep the Nexus 6 but I'm at least going to give the 6P a shot.

I'm not far behind but not because Android vs Apple but because my life centers around MS products. I work in IT, exclusively with MS products. Why is my mobile device on a different ecosystem?
I'm excited for what MS has in store for their APIs that allow ios and Android apps to behave as if they're in their natural environment. I think this approach is going to flatten the playing field and OS will no longer matter.
Now if they could just make tech without built in obsolescion the market will start filling with devices that have purpose instead of purely consumerism. There WILL be a threshold of device waste that will force our hand.
Excel made some good points. And I too felt the same about not seeing much improvement from my phone but the continuous development thru ROMs makes it seems like the progress is small but it not....if you tally up the progress over the 1 year iPhone life cycle it is a lot of progress.
Google has too many things going on and unfortunately doesn't take the time to perfect their products except their search engine. They rather create a new product versus refining an existing one.
Imagine if google only had drive, no gmail, no G+, a tablet, one PC, and Android that ran on a single phone from one manufacturer....say LG. And Kept that same phone and just improved the hardware each year and the software as well....and diverted all other efforts towards perfecting that single device. That phone would be light years ahead of apple. Instead google has close to 200 products and services they wear themselves thin with. And tackling the immense task of attempting to make android run seemless and smooth on
Almost 19,000 devices instead of on just a handful of devices plus one phone is the difference between google and apple.
With that said and even with google continuing to expand like they do....I still think Google's android os running on top tier android devices will surpass IPhones in all aspects in couple years.

Partially correct on the first point. It is fundamentally still "stock" (no kernel mods/custom features) on GPE firmware, but yes, I haven't tried stock since the original shipping firmware. I haven't rooted my phones since putting GPE on the S4. My Nexus 9, the G3, and the S4 all run unrooted, the former two of which are on stock firmware. The biggest pain about Android is debloating carrier crapware, a problem nonexistent on Nexus devices.
I feel like Android has matured to the point that there is little left to give. As far as supporting their own stuff, that's why I feel like the N6P would be the ultimate.

I agree, but customisation is so easy to do on Android without mods or root. The only other phone I was considering was the S6 edge +, which is also comparably restrictive. I just haven't felt the need to root since the S4.
An iPhone, on the other hand, I would be keen to jailbreak instantly. Quite a lot of interesting tweaks come out of Apple's "crack R&D team" (like swipeselection....), and jailbreaking is the only way to stay on that edge and get appropriate customisation.
I would also be using pretty much solely Google apps there anyway, since the default apps are kinda terrible.

But the diversity is the beauty of Google. The fact that they move the ecosystem forward and have a constant stream of novelty across their business is what helps them succeed. Android itself doesn't really need more improvement, is my argument. It's already there, and their job is to create new services to drive the platform.
Android as an OS already far exceeds that of iOS IMO, especially with Google Now. What I want to see is how Apple catches , since their platform seems to still be in flux (as far as performance and service delivery goes).
You'll change your mind when they release the Nexus 14z, which will project it's 16k display directly to your brain, and be able to read your thoughts instead of having to speak "OK Google".
I'm serious, because Google will have perfected mind control by then and we'll all be drones.

I agree with you the software is better but implementing all the services via the OS on a multitude of devices is a difficult task. However starting with this 6P nexus devices I think are on par with iPhone (hardware and software) and I bet will surpass the iPhone 7 next year.
I just wish they worked with one manufacturer to help perfect the hardware and built on a good hardware design instead of going back and forth with with hardware features and designs .....kinda like the 5x with 6P features.

That said, iPhones have been such a bitter disappointment since the Gingerbread days. I'm on Apple for the most part (MBr, iMac 5k) and would consider switching to iOS but the differentiators that custom Androids offer simply aren't there, or even possible. The current crop of crippled hardware is missing too much. When Apple makes a real retina display (eg AMOLED 2k) and loses the oversized HTC-ish bezels it'll be worth another look. Assuming Apple gives out widgets, call recording & MinMinGuard too.

For a Nexus device the support window is 3 years. N5 is 2 years old and just recieved Android 6.0. It will continue to get updates for atleast another full year. Unfortunately that is likely to end when android N comes next fall.
Interesting that this phone has everything you ever wanted. Did you know you wanted a 1440p phone with a fingerprint scanner 2 years ago? Probably not. I'm sure innovation will continue, though maybe slowly. I'd like to see better battery tech.
This is how the technology cycle is. You cant have the same level of developments every year throughout the products/os cycle.
I believe many of the features we see added are already developed. They just hold back so they can have a balance of Big n small changes each year & also market couple of features as exclusives for the latest version.
It is the same with iOs as well. You will not see a lot of big changes. Many of them will be hardware based. As os's get more refined hardware dependency will reduce. Today you can get excellent performance from a mid range android device. Tomorrow it will spread to lower end devices aswell. In principal its a good thing.
Right now the top most focus for any R&D of software or hardware company is battery life. The company that cracks it will play a major role.

Really? People are still hung up on sapphire? Sapphire is brittle. I want foldable screens. I still believe Nokia's concept of a phone that trifolds and then bends to fit as a watch is the future. No more carrying a giant brick in my pocket.

A G3 running BlissPop ROM is truly a thing of beauty! It's incredibly compact and lightweight for a 5.5" phone, and it flies without the LG software on it. It has a great camera (a step behind the current best, but I've had very few pictures I wasn't very happy with), and the screen as much better than it's reputation indicates it should be ... mostly, I think, because the default brightness is quite low. And the battery life is quite good ... I end most days with 50% after about 1.5 hours of SOT.
I'm mostly upgrading to the 6P because I usually buy a new phone every 6-9 months, but it's been 14 months and I need a new shiny object to fondle. I'm honestly not expecting it to be a whole lot better than the G3 for me ... better screen, better speakers (I hope) and a fingerprint reader may or may not be enough to compensate for the substantial increase in bulk. I had a Note 5 for a week, and it just didn't feel like much of an improvement so I sent it back, which I have never done before.
And my G3 has a replaceable battery, and I could probably be happy with it for 5 more years, if I wasn't such a gadget whore.
Of course I certainly don't think an iPhone is the answer .... that's just ridiculous!

Here's an idea...try to find a friend with an iPhone who would be willing to trade with you for a week or something. Wipe the phones, trade your SIMs and see how the other side lives.

Though it had it's issues, the Nexus 6 strong enough in all the categories that I stuck with it for a full year. The only thing strong enough to pull me away now is the 6P. I fully expect it to keep me locked in for the next year as well. However, it could be good enough that I don't feel the need to upgrade to next year's nexus. Only time will tell.
