Root and Unroot. - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This has probably been asked before, but I can't find it.
I am not new to rooting and CFW, I run them both on my GT540, but I am new to Samsung and flash counters.
If I choose to root my phone, but not install CWM just yet, if I need a warrenty claim would I have to reset my flash counter after I unroot? Just for a lil advice, I want to root.
Also can someone link me to the best method for a fast root, rather than root and CWM, I can install the latter later when I decide to use a custom rom.

temporary Root on official Honeycomb?

Hi there.
I've bought a Flyer recently, and got it with official 3.2 honeycomb on it (i bought it used). Given that it has its flaws, but i still want to stick with it, i just wanted root to remove some bullcrap apps. Nothing more; no custom roms, no kernel, just want to root the damn thing, even if it's a temporary root...
I've been reading about S-OFF, downgrading, installing recovery... that's all good but i'm looking only to root the device. Is that possible or i have to go through the whole process?
Try this...

To my knowledge, you will need recovery to do this. There is a ClockworkMod recovery on this thread (first set of directions) that you can flash. Then once you have that, go to this site, download the 3rd zip (you'll see all the Android versions above it), place it on your external sdcard, reboot to recovery and then install the zip. There may be an easier way but that's the only way I know how off my head.

[Q] UPDATED but really want root is there any way to root(without flashing or roms)

htc rezound, bought phone today, it said theres an update, i updated now no root. i want root and used and unlocked with the all in one toolkit provided in one of these forums, however i do not want to flash a stupid recover or custom rom. i just want to download some apps that need root and delete bloatware. thanks in advance.
You don't need to flash a stupid recovery, you can flash a smart one called Amon Ra. Then just go into the devoloper menu and install su and you are rooted. Easy peasy. It'll be done in a minute and it won't hurt a bit. You can remain stock ROM, no need to flash a custom ROM.
^ You can even to back to the less-smart stock recovery after that's done.

[Q] Rooting i9300 after Motherboard failure service fix

Hey guys,
I just got back with my SGS3 from service. Two weeks ago, after installing Siyah v1.8, phone died. Not right after. I flashed it in the evening, the phone was dead in the morning. Motherboard failure.
I describe this, so u can uderstand my concerns.
Now, the phone is back, fully working, with stock 4.1.2 installed. I need to recover my backup from before the crash, therefore i need root.
I'm scrolling through the subjects of rooting and I'm highly confused. Chainfire is not supporting CWM anymore, and from his topic i dont get how the hell I can flash Omega rom, without CWM. I don't get this whole flashing counter problem. But there is the triangle away app, so what is the problem about?!
I cant find one, most updated, straight method of rooting and I don't want to say goodbye to my phone again for two weeks.
I'm not a master in those things. Please explain, if I will root with CF-AutoRoot, how do I install Omega ROM (or any other)? Will it be possible through the custom recovery? If I install CF-AutoRoot, can I install CWM?
Please lead me with this. I don't want to brick my phone again
Simply use cf root that includes cwm .
Otherwise you will need to read Chainfires instruction .

Install cf auto root, and after that cwm (touch) recovery and after that you can install everything you need

[Q] P7500 update to ICS cannot gain root

I have updated to ICS with ODIN because KIES was just to useless to carry out the simple task...
Tried rooting with "Rooting-Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-10.1.zip" which I found on the forum. It says it is successful and superuser appears. but when trying to carry out any root feature it fails ....
Try this. Go to this site and download the 3.1.3 - ARM file.
http://androidsu.com/superuser/
Flash that in recovery if you want to root the stock ROM. Remember though that you always do so at your own risk.
Or...you could bypass the rooting process altogether if you plan on flashing a rooted ROM. You do not need to root before doing that...just if you plan to use the stock ROM and need root permissions.
Many Thanx

how to root i9205 on UCNA2 firmware?

hi, i have a simple question, is it possible to root my device? i've never root my mega 6.3 since i bought it...... but i heard that the recent firmware have some problems in the possibility of rooting it.
there are a lots of guide but everyone say a different method. OK I AM A NOOB OF MODDING.
but is quite difficult to understand guides that are different in this way:
1) some indicates to just use an apk autorooting the device
2) some do require to change thekernel + manually install the superuser apk
3)not permanent root....
4) others......
so, please be patient...... i only want to find a "normal" root method.......and IF POSSIBLE a root that could allow me to easily UNroot the device to be able to update my firmware OTA in the moment samsung will update our great device to kitkat
If you are a noob at modding don't even bother with rooting. Its dangerous and BTW I think your firmware has KNOX which the GMega doesn't have a workaround.

If you are brave enough you can try it using this tutorial
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2574953
But read it thoroughly and if you do not understand one thing though - do not attempt to try.
Read forums and learn till you can understand what you are doing lest you have quite expensive paperweight... I am not responsible for what you do with your phone!
my previous phone was rooter, the optimus 3d and the ascend mate.
i don't need toor for extreme modding but just to install a custom recovery for a nandroid backup and for use SOME APP THAT REQUIRE root to work properly.
i never installed a recovery but i read everywhere that it is a lot usefull in case of some errors, to restore the previous backup made 1:1 (nandroid)
Every modding attempt must start from root and (optionally) custom recovery. In fact - rooting itself is modding and quite heavy from system point of view. If you want to change ONE THING in system, you have to root your phone. Doing this you are tripping 'warranty flag' and from now on your warranty is void.
If you have firmware with KNOX and new bootloader - tripping this flag is irreversible. But as long as you do not attempt to flash older firmware (before KNOX) it does not affect the operation of the system. Trying to flash older firmware makes your phone softbrick because of tripping security mechanism in new bootloader.
If you already rooted your phone it is resonable to flash custom recovery and by this have wide possiblity making backups of your whole system (nandroid backup) or flashing custom ROMs
