Have searched the threads and did not come up with anything pertaining to unlocked Gtab that seemed to clearly explain( to me) what the easiest methods are to root and apply CWM. The one I did find I found confusing. I am also considering just installing CWM recovery and then installing the new rom with the Touchwiz update which is also rooted. Is this possible to do and what would the easiest method be for installing CWM(I am familair with Odin and remotely acquainted with Nvflash. I would prefer Odin if that is feasible. I found a thread that was for the locked version but am hesitant until I find out for sure that it also works with unlocked device. Also is there a downside to just installing CWM and then having custom rom root the device? Any and all help is greatly appreciated!!!!

Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 I will try this. Just one last question, if I restore the backup I make before flashing the rom, would I be able to get OTA for official TouchWiz? Or would I have to restore the stock recovery as well? Thanks again!! I hit the thanks buttom as well....

When installing the T3rabyte version will all of my installed apps and data still be available or do I need to reinstall everything. Sorry for such a newbie question but it would be a pain to have to reinstall all apps. I assume the OTA would not do a complete factory reset?

I rooted my note using Da_G's process which worked great. I then tried to "unroot" it using the kernel pda-odin-att-stock-kernel.tar and it appears to be still rooted (Titanum Backup still gets root privs). Do I need to flash the 400MB .rar to remove root?

I did use that particular process but since I only flashed the kernel to root it shouldn't I only have to flash the stock kernel to unroot?

No because a kernal by itself doesn't provide root. If you read Da_G's original post it says that the kernal runs an auto-root script on /system. That is where the root takes place. That is why when you flash only the kernal your system is still rooted. You must flash stock system as well.

It's only guaranteed you will get OTA updates if the phone is completely stock. Sometimes rooting alone will still allow you to get OTA updates, but from what I've heard, it's very hit or miss.
However, if the trend continues from what was done with the Samsung Captivate, then any serious update for the phone will be via Kies and not OTA anyway.

Device status modified and cannot update

Because triangle away can reset your flash counter only if you're running stock recovery, stock kernel, stock rom etc.
CF-AutoRoot should not make your status "modified" but probably like you see it did. Maybe some other apps did that, maybe not, nobody knows anyway. If you really need these updates then you should flash newest firmware from samsung through odin and then root it + reset flash counter, it should work also for further updates (but I'm not sure).

I know where to get the FW updates to flash via Odin but don't really understand how to reset the flash counter if not by using TriangleAway.
Could you please be kind enough to guide me?

P.S: I was able to do the FW update via Kies and now the status is back to normal, but I'm afraid to root coz the status might go back to modified.
It's more like, you know. If we're talking about warranty then they'll find that your rooted your phone anyway. If we're talking about updates then probably it's still better to keep an eye on some stock-based custom roms, mostly because of frequent updates (nearly instantly after new baseband), while you still need to wait some time for OTA to arrive. Of course it's much easier to apply OTA than whole custom rom but hey, how often are you doing that?
About your question - busybox is my choice because it modifies /system apps, many of them.
And lastly - in odin you have a checkbox to reset flash counter, so you don't need to worry about anything using this tool. At least in general.
Overall I'd stick with pure stock non-rooted firmware if you don't need it in general or rooted custom rom (f.e. mine ) for much better experience. I couldn't go back to stock after getting used to much better performance, less battery drain etc.
Choice is yours.

I am using the Odin version provided by Chainfire in his S3 rooting thread in which all options are disabled except for Auto reboot.
@JJEgan I don't even know how to use half of the apps I mentioned, I only installed them as my friend suggested it as must have root apps.
As you might see, I am still a N00b at this and am in the learning process.

I suggest going through my flashing guide located in ArchiDroid thread, with newest odin and newest methods for flashing/rooting.

If I'm not mistaken, ArchiDroid is a Custom ROM(pre-rooted) which requires a Custom Recovery.
I will be learning a bit more first before I install a Custom ROM.
A question though. Will I have to take a backup of my app data if I decide to install a custom ROM?
Also if I want to install the stock FW via Odin, will I have to take a backup first?

Yes it requires custom recovery for installing .zip package.
There is nothing to learn if you ask me, you have complete guide for installing everything you need in step-by-step howto. If you want to keep your data then you need to use some nice app for that f.e. Titanium Backup but for that you need root and... yeah. It's easier to start from scratch on new pre-rooted rom.
I'd suggest flashing custom recovery (tutorial in my topic) and then you can create a backup directly from that, with everything you want to, including actual system, efs folder, recovery, kernel etc. So you can easily get back to original rom whenever you want to. Keep in mind that you still need custom recovery for that.

Ok Now I'm really confused
I still haven't learnt how to use Titanium Backup to backup, or how to do a nandroid backup. I have read it's better to do a backup b4 installing a custom ROM. And if I'm not mistaken, I need ROOT to do a nandroid backup too.
As I said before that I used CF-Auto-Root, I just followed the instructions to the word.

EDIT: Just did the CF-Auto_Root again and didn't install any other apps like busybox(uninstalled all root apps) and used triangleaway to reset the flash counter. But the counter still stuck on 1
The device status shows normal though.

First of all you need custom recovery to perform nandroid backups. So you can stick with my first 10 steps in my howto. After that enter recovery, enter backup section and make a custom backup (or default, doesn't matter) of everything you have, especially /efs folder as it's really important. When you finish doing backup then boot to your normal system and copy these backups to your PC. Now you're sure that they won't disappear and if you want to backup your phone from that then simply put them back on your phone and restore them from the recovery.
But overall I'd suggest clean start without these backups. Of course it's always recommended and I recommend it as well but as long as you won't want to go back to original rom, there is no real point for backing it up. You can always download latest official firmware and flash it through odin.

I have an LG Optimus L9 and I'm on Ice Cream Sandwich right now, the stock firmware that was there when I bought the phone. Now what I want to do, is backup the current ROM in its full state, then upgrade to Jelly Bean via the OTA updater from LG.
Then I want to return to my previously backed up ROM whenever I'll want to, and get the same state of ICS that I had before upgrading.
Is it even possible? I don't mind if I have to root it.

Everything you mentioned is possible, but there's still trade-offs:
1) if you want EVERYTHING to be the same as now (ICS), including radio, u-boot, and x-boot, then you can always using fastboot to flash the u-boot, and x-boot, and then using offline flashing KDZ to restore STOCK ICS (with root) and then use ClockworkMod ROM Manager to Recovery your current backup;
2) I personally don't see the need for you to have radio, u-boot, and x-boot to come back to it's current state: JB radio, u/x-boot works fine with ICS ROM. So the simple thing to do for you is:
a) ROOT your current ICS
b) install ClockworkMod ROM Manager
c) backup (using CWM)
d) update to JB (keep root and CWM)
e) restore the backup from step c whenever you prefer

I'm still wondering though, if I do your process mentioned at step 2 above, will I get my bootloader unlocked? I'm a newbie in that kind of stuff, but I've seen articles mentioning something, that you can only unlock the bootloader when being on Jelly Bean.

Voodoo rootkeeper is needed for you to retain root via ota. Or you can riot again if it's no problem.

It's possible but rooting L9 ICS is not an easy one-click process. If you want to try, take a look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2173465.
For what you want to do you should
1. Try to offline flash your current stock rom first. This make sure that you familair with offline flash and you can flash stock rom back if rooting process go wrong. Refer to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2085344
This process don't delete your data if you do it right.
2. Get modified .bin file for your rom if any. If there're no modified .bin for your rom, you must make one. It require editing binary file with hex editor. There're some thread about this somewhere in the forum.
3. Root your phone with http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2173465. Almost same process as offline flash but you need to add some stuff to your phone and replace some files while flashing kdz.

No you won't get your bootloader unlocked. It is true that only official P760 JB supports bootloader-unlocking, but that is an option, not a necessity (which you can deal later if you want to).
Also artit is right that ROOT ICS is not one-click process. I followed cmahendra's excellent tutorial and get things done on first try, but things differ for different person.
Root for JB
If you don't want to do the complicated root method for ICS then just wait until you upgrade to jelly bean and then go here. ICS was a bit difficult to root but once you do it then you can get it done with your eyes closed. Cmahendra has a great tutorial along with Lelus method it's great! Good luck!!

Yeah, I guess it's not that hard, I'll try to do it. It's similar to the method for flashing an LG KM900 which I had before (non Android). I'll try it and report here.
I hope I can find a KDZ matching by current firmware, though.

Okay, so I managed to root ICS and install the recovery then backup my firmware.
Although when I installed the Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper and made a temporary unroot, I immediately went to the Software Update option on my phone. It downloaded the update and rebooted. Then soon after a while I got an error "Err:0x13e", then it rebooted back into Android and said something like "unexpected error occured while upgrading" (not precise message).
I'm stuck at this point. What should I do now? Has anyone experienced this before?

So are you saying your phone is dead or what? Did it reboot and die? More details please. And you weren't suppose to make a temp unroot, you were suppose to protect root.

No, it's not dead. It throws an error "Err:0x13e" during the "Upgrading Firmware" stage, then it fails and reboots back to Android.
I tried everything in Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper, it still didn't work.

The reason i't snot working is because of the custom recovery. you have to delete cwm so that the upgrade can boot to original recovery and upgrade your phone. Be sure to get into Voodoo and protect root. That will be important after you upgrade.
After the upgrade go into google play and install Voodoo then recover root.

Thanks, I see now. Though I decided to flash a Jelly Bean KDZ instead, then do a factory restore. Both my root and CWM were gone, so I rooted again using the LGPwn method, which worked just fine. Afterwards, I installed the same recovery I had on ICS, and now everything is working fine. :laugh:

Ive been having a strange problem with a couple Galaxy Mega I9200. I have rooted both before without any problems using KINGO originally. The i decided to update both of them with version UBUCNA2. When i tried to re root them back, even though the process have run fine a couple times the phone is not rooting. At this point i dont know what else to do to try to root those phones. I have tried every single method around this forum i think not just KINGO this time. And have not been able to reach root the way it should. Titanium backup shows not able to aquire root priviledges, and other root apps also. Can someone please help me on this?? Keep in mind im not a newbie so dont give me the recovery method advice without something new or to use KINGO because ive have done that already. Thanks a lot guys
You upgraded your phones to the latest knox enabled firmware which has the knox bootloader. You cannot go back to an older firmware or flash a custom rom now.
To root, try the directions provided in this thread and use the melius3gxx files instead of meliusltexx.

Ok thanks, the phones already had the knox apk so my guess was that it was going to be the same thing. Thanks for clarifying that one. And thanks for the advice.
Thanks again, turns out the only thing that is failling root access is when i try to unlock the phone via box. For some reason when its checking for SU access it fails. But thanks anyway i managed to solve the Root problem.
