[Q] Samsung Galaxy S3 LTE vs. International Model? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I was looking to buy the Samsung Galaxy S3 but i'm confused as to which model should I buy. The international model or the North American model.
I cannot upgrade through my carrier (Bell Mobility in Toronto, ON) and hence either one I buy, I'll have to buy from outside.
Is the processor (dual vs quad) along with the RAM the only difference in these two models? If yes, then which one should I go for? Maybe answer in terms on battery life, ROMS available, etc etc. Would the quad core be faster than the dual core with half the RAM?
I have a regular data plan and I won't be thinking about using LTE for now.
Usage wise, I'd say I'm a moderate user and don't play very heavy games, but maybe, occasionally I might play MC3, GTA III etc. Definitely be multitasking a lot and constant texting/facebooking/checking emails etc.
I'm thinking to get the International version! But if the North American version is better, I would go for that.
Thanks

If you aren't using LTE then international model wins hands down.

It's not 1ghz and 2ghz but 1gb and 2gb of ram. I'm from Canada and I chose the int one because of dev support, better GPU, future quadcore optimization, I don't care about LTE since I have 2GB of data monthly and 3G+ is enough for me. Also audio as nodstuff said, earlier release and finally 1gb is enough, I'm doing heavy multitasking and I never reached the 1GB of ram, the redraw issue can be fixed by editing a file and I'm sure it will be the same for the US version. So yeah int version is the best for me, now you have to find out which one is the best for YOU.

IMO, LTE is not all it's cracked up to be, if you don't have unlimited data then it's not really worth it. I'm not going to sacrifice faster CPU/GPU for a 2GB cap LTE.
Needless to say I got international version.

also there is no 2ghz vs 1ghz. there is 1gb ram vs 2 gb ram.

1) Faster CPU? R u blind or something - Krait uses a highly modified A15s (which i believe what everyone wanted before Samsung decided to step back and stay on A9s for a bit more) and to be honest it is indeed faster in real life especially when it comes to opening apps (i had a chance to play with 2 devices).
2) GPU is faster on international thou but doubt u would be able to use even half of its power (i still have ipod touch 1gen and it can handle all games except Infinity Blade as long as OS allows on its weak PowerVR MBXLite)
3) Both have Wolfson DAC
4) NA Galaxy S3 has double RAM. If u are a multitasking freak (or use alot of ram hungry apps) then u would see a performance difference. Its also there to feed S4.
5) Krait is more power effecient than exynos when just using HSPA+
6) You have an option to use LTE (battery life will start draining faster however but highly dependent on your network)
With that said Exynos is indeed more optimized (no surprise) so the experience may be slower but ALWAYS fluid. However, nothing that the xda devs cant fix!!

Optimised A-9's built on 32nm Fab. Process with HKMG.
Krait is not more energy efficient, research high k metal gate which is used in the exynos 4412.
As for wolfson DAC, what us your source for that information? Supercurio said that it didn't after he came back from a trip to wolfsons facility in Edinburgh where he went after being invited to share some ideas.

Reviewers have already indicated that the NA SIII is indeed faster in regards to cpu and slightly better in battery life. It was also proven that the INT SIII has a significantly better gpu. Nonetheless, both versions are fantastic and have their tradeoffs.

I prefer the international phone. Fast and clean phone, unlimited for $10 with high speed enough for me. Love the battery, last for a long hard day.

Decision Made!!
Thanks for the responses guys!!
I finally got my hands on the International model and been playing with it heavily since today afternoon. They battery was at 54% when I first booted the device. Its been several hours of non-stop usage and the battery life seems to be good. Of course its too early to make any conclusion.
Overall, I'm loving it. Its so smooth!!
So glad I decided to sell my note to get this one. No doubt the note was/still is an excellent device. But I love S3 more!!! <3

What's the best data settings on AT&T?
I've had a bunch of data issues with the GS3 stalling out, I've changed from Auto Mode to CDMA and GSM, all don't do much.
I am running the standard APN and my current plan is a LTE unlimited plan since I also have an AT&T HTC One X.
Thanks

The North American S3 does NOT have a Wolfson DAC:
Qualcomm's S4 chipset uses Qualcomm's proprietary audio hub, the WCD9310. This chipset is found in the US versions of the One X, One S, and even Samsung's Galaxy S III (only the international Galaxy S III will have a Wolfson DAC, sorry guys).

That said, international version for all of the reasons previously mentioned.

Damn, for a moment I thought the US version was on par. The upgraded DAC would be nice.

What about gorilaglass2 ?!?!
There are a lot of videos and comments, about International version don't have Gorilaglass2, what is proven to be on US version!!!

Honestly if you are not going to us LTE then there should be no discussion about it. The international version is an amazing phone and I got it because I also don't care for LTE. If I did then I would look into the pros and cons for both versions. Since your not using LTE then looking at pros and cons is just invalid because overall international version is more optimized and even the largest multitasking user will reach MAX of 850MB... honestly. Hope it helped.

Anyone else tempted to restock and get the SGS2 Skyrocket?

I am pretty tempted to restock mine and get the skyrocket. It sports a 1.5ghz processor and 4g LTE. I need to constantly check emails and upload documents, so LTE would be super helpful. Anyone else tempted?

IMO, 4G is not worth the upgrade (especially since I dont have it in my area anyway) and the 1.5dual core is only a fractional upgrade from our 1.2dual core. just my opinion but its not worth the upgrade. AT&T only has 4G in like 6 areas around the country. Unless you are one of them, why upgrade?
I'm still in the return period for my phone, I'm tempted to turn it in and get it, but I'm worried about battery life
Not even the slightest!

The Snapdragon is proven to do poorly compared to the Exynos clock-for-clock. So it has to get clocked higher to achieve similar performance. As a result - worse battery life and more heat for no performance benefit.
Similarly - LTE means awful battery life and a fat overweight phone, just ask any Verizon user.
Last but not least - check out the T989 development forums, and realize that you have the exact same hardware.

No. I'm not interested.
Same screen resolution and technology in a slightly larger screen - if anything it won't look as good.
Qualcomm processor - good processor but not on the same par as Samsung exynos
LTE radio, but I'm no where near LTE market. I may go through one more phone upgrade before LTE its deployed in a wide enough range to make it worth while. Plus another year or two will help them improve battery life on the LTE Phones.

That assumes that 95% of the public would know the difference.
All the public sees is 1.5 > 1.2 and 4.5 > 4.3. Just like 4G > 3G. Most people don't know the difference, and wouldnt notice the difference in use.

Note only got a 1.4 GHz version bump - why would the Skyrocket get a 1.5 GHz Exynos if the Note doesn't even get it?
In addition, every Samsung device with an "unusual" radio has had a Snapdragon or OMAP.
Right now there isn't definitive confirmation, but all of the evidence says it's the same CPU as the T989:

I know the 1.5 exynos processor has been announced and it has been heavily implied that chip will be the one in the galaxy note when it comes out.
Could it be in the skyrocket, sure, but I doubt it. Every other sgs2 with 1.5 processor has been a Qualcomm.
And it has been also said this phone will have Qualcomm's LTE combo radio - if it does have that radio, then it will have the Qualcomm processor as well.
although this is all speculation at this point, we won't know for sure until next week. But I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for this to be the first phone with the exynos 1.5. I expect that will be the galaxy note, or something like the galaxy note.

More likely that it's the Qualcomm at this point since Exynos is just a rumor and an assumption based on clock speed. Galaxy S II LTE models all have the Qualcomm chips in them, including the Rogers Galaxy LTE which is pretty much a Canadian AT&T since they get the same phones.
I already returned sgs2 just now... back to atrix for 6 days... will get HTC vivid instead...

thinking of trading my Rogers I717 for n7000

Hi guys, I need some honest advise. I'm thinking of trading my Rogers note for the international version. What do you folks recommend. Following are my reasons.
1. I believe the n7000 will get ics before the Rogers I717
2. I get 4 hours of battery and find it frustrating. I heard the battery performance is better on the international version.
3. I heard n7000 is a bit faster. I find i717 gets a bit choppy during screen transitions
4. I find I717 gets quite warm while using. A little uncomfortable.
5. I hardly get full lte to care about it. 4g is fine 6. Home button on the n7000 seems nice.
What do you thinks guys? Any help would be appreciated.
thanks
PS. I posted this thread in the n7000 board too.

The international version will receive ICS long before the I-717. The adreno 220 GPU in the I-717 is better than the Mali400 in the N-7000; however the CPU in the N-7000 outpaces the I-717. Both devices suffer from black clipping.
So its a trade off for CPU performance or GPU performance, 3 button or 4 button and LTE vs hspa+.
My only advice for you is if your area doesn't have LTE. Yes do it. But if you in LTE area, No. The speed is a big different. I use ATT S2 and ATT Note so i know what the difference and its worth to keep.

I switched from N700 to I717 due to LTE & don't regret one bit. I still have my N7000 so I can enjoy both worlds.
If you like to flash custom roms etc then go to the N7000, development is much more active there, N7000 has ICS both AOSP based roms and an unofficial leaked one!
If you have LTE in your area then it's up to you if you want it, I mean I'd rather use my wifi router as I don't get throttled and am not going to be downloading from my phone. Besides you know how much LTE is a battery sucker
I've used both and have to say that the N-7000 just performs better in real life use and in benchmarks.

Its the other way around, the GPU performance is better on the Exnyos due to the Mali GPU it's a multi core gpu. The CPU performance should be better on the Snapdragon processor and have better power management able to turn off one core. Lighter black levels is mainly due to gamma levels tweaking in mdnie settings. I believe supercurio is working on a new application.
ICS will be on the way there is already a leak for the skyrocket, so they are working on the snapdragon variants with lte.. Porting time is much more dependent on the galaxy note premium suite and how long it will take to integrate to the touchwiz ics framework, then Q&A.
Differences are NFC and LTE radio on the i717. I suppose you would want the to switch N7000 if your focus is on playing games that require 3d, rather than using it as a work phone/tablet. Or not interested or don't have a LTE plan. Performance is relatively the same if you overclock the I717 to the N7000.
There other ways to push performance like overclocking the gpu (when a usermode adjustment is available.) I'm guessing the Max for the Adreno 220 is in the ball park of 320 MHz. Saving aittle more battery by undervolting. Battery drain is also due to baseband and Rom optimization, which will get better in subsequent releases.
It just really depends if you plan foregoing LTE and Rogers is pretty congested at peak hours on their HSPA network compared to their LTE network. NFC is a big factor as well as more products and services will be utilizing it in the near future. I already use it for quick file transfer between my nfc enabled devices. So it depends really if you want these features or graphics performance is a priority for you. In the future the user experience is pretty much going to be the same on both models once ICS is available.

I based my opinion on this article and the anandtech article linked within. Both devices use exactly the same hardware as the N-7000 and I-717 other than the screen.
The Adreno 220 is roughly 2.2 times the GPU as the Mali 400. What made the real difference is the Note has 2.67 times the pixles of the SGS2 while using the same Mali 400 GPU. If the N-7000 shipped with the Exynos 4212 it would have the quad core Mali 400 mp4.

Yeah you are correct i do still have the at&t version but i haven't touched it since getting the n7000 version. I have only had this version for a week but i have had the at&t version since pre sale release on February 17th and i just haven't had the chance to list it to sell it yet. I just wanted to add this. While NFC may see pretty lame right now, for those that are security conscious, that is going to change this summer. As long as you get it enabled by changing ROMs, you will be able to use YubiCo's new NFC enabled security tokens, which will be fully integrated with LastPass. Check those out.

My major concern is battery life. How do you think battery life will compare between the International and US variants? I would be on ATT with unlimited LTE plan. Although for the most part, I'd be connected to wifi.

I work in the server world (enterprise computing) and adding system RAM is one of the biggest power draws in a server chassis.
For example, a server with 550W power supplies does just fine with 32GB RAM.
But tripe that to 96GB RAM and now you need 700W power supplies to keep up with the energy demand.
My point is, a simple doubling of RAM may draw a slight amount more of battery. Don't know how real world noticeable it will be, but it is a fact that it will take more battery juice to run 2GB than it will 1GB.

would it be a wash between both variants considering the Int. quad core will eat more battery than the US duo core?
Trying to discover if the sprint variant will have the 800mhz lte radio onboard. Difficult finding full, detailed specs for the U.S. variants.

Without technical docs I wouldn't know, but my guestimate would be it's a wash, yeah.
Though the two extra cores will usually be turned off.
I'm kind of disappointed that it is coming out with the Adreno 225 and not something better. Also the HD screen instead of the HD+ was somewhat disappointing as well. I am just waiting to see what the iphone 5 is coming out with, hopefully they announce it soon so I can make my choice!

[Q] What the hell is this?????

what is going on here? samsung is going to launch a galaxy s III with a quad-core processor, 4G LTE and a huge 2GB RAM in Korea!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why they are doing this? why we are not getting these super features with the International version of galaxy s III?

1. Most countries aside from the US and Canada (and countries in Asia) don't have LTE.
2. The 2GB of RAM is negligible unless you're a super-multitasker.
3. The way they got the LTE radio to work with the Exynos is by separating it from the SoC, which will result in very poor battery life. In the US models, which also do LTE and have 2GB of RAM, the phone uses the Snapdragon S4 SoC, not Exynos, which results in better battery life at the loss of raw power.

what do you think? will 2GB RAM boost the speed of s III? mean, will it help to run high graphics games smoother than the International version of s III?
No

RAM does not affect speed positively, only negatively if you have too little (like if you tried running Ice Cream Sandwich on a G1/HTC Dream). RAM only affects the amount of applications you can have open at once, which is not a huge deal given that 1GB of RAM is a lot already, and Android (which is Linux) has fantastic memory management.
Now, I know you're going to go into your Task Manager and then come here and post, "BUT I ONLY HAVE LIKE _____ MB RAM FREE!". In Linux, free RAM is wasted RAM; the OS will load applications into memory to fill it up BUT that doesn't mean they're running. They'll start up faster when you use them, but they won't use battery when you're not. So even if you got the 2GB version, most of it would still be filled by the OS.

Get used to it. Sgs3 forum manages to knock down the average xda iq quite a bit.
Not so much a dig at this op... this is quite mild

thanks for your information. I've got it now.:good: can you please make me understand that how samsung make a 4G LTE supported quad-core processor in a short time?
Normally, everything (RAM, CPU, GPU, DAC, Radios) are on one chip called an SoC (System on a Chip). Samsung put a separate 4G LTE radio in the phone, which talks to the SoC when it's being used. To clarify, when you say Exynos, you're talking about the SoC; that's what Samsung's is called. Snapdragon and Tegra III are other SoC's. But anyways, they put a separate (not on the SoC) LTE radio in there to make them be able to talk to each other, BUT it results in much less battery life since the phone has to power several components at once instead of one chip with everything on it.
This isn't the first time they've done this. The Tab 7.7 on Verizon (4G LTE) here in the US has the same Exynos dual-core as the Galaxy S II, but it has separate radio as well. The separate 4G LTE radio must have its own co-processor of some kind to process the information that the Exynos can't.

Exynos.

Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to know any provider in US is providing the quad core version of the phone? I have to get myself a new phone. And will weigh my options between iPhone 5 and S3 (just waiting for reviews and comparisons), but wanted the quad core version of the Galaxy S III.
U can get them from newegg brand new but at full price.
All the us carriers have the dual core version. And actually my brother has lte dual core version from T-Mobile and according to our test, his is slightly better in the graphics department and mine is better in cpu but not enough to tell a difference.
Sent from either Galaxy S3 intl or Nexus 7
both on stock at the moment!!
The Snapdragon has a 2GB RAM right?
Yes it does! But there is a new quad with 2gb ram coming

I would rather choose the dualcore version. The overall speed is the same, but the snapdragon processor didn't heat up so much as the quadcore version . And the 2GB of RAM are great

I beg to differ. I actually have both devices currently. The overall speed is slightly different. The dualcore seems a bit quicker but it's not as smooth and fluid as the 9300. You really can only tell having them side by side by the US version is slightly more jerky than the 9300. I'm not saying the US is a slouch at all but side by side you can see the difference.
The JB leak on the US version has made it super smooth though. I believe project butter is farther along on the dualcore JB leaks than the 9300 leaks.
About the heat, my US version actually heats up more than my 9300. The Ram department I'm not seeing a huge difference there either. I mean sure the US has more free ram available but so far I havent noticed anything too different. I mean I have over 700mb free on my US version now. I opened an app like 20 min ago came back to it and it had to relaunch so even though I had over 700MB free the app still closed itself(or android did)
They are both great devices and I do find myself switching between the two. LTE is very nice..
I really really hope they release a quad with 2gb and LTE in the US like they are in other parts of the world but I doubt they will since in their eyes NA already has a LTE capable GS3 with 2gb of ram. That would be my perfect phone
So I wouldnt hold my breath for them releasing one in the US that just has Quadcore with 2gb of ram and LTE but I guess I can hope
The international version has a faster GPU by quite a way. However, if I were you I'd focus more on whether you require 4G than whether you can get hold of the quad core. The reality is that the quad core processor is not better. If I had the choice I'd have gone for the S4, but of course that choice was not there.

While many are responding to your question about S3 quad vs US dual core differences, I wanted to respond to your iPhone 5 vs S3 doubt.
I think you should first of all think about screen size. In my opinion, 4" and 4.8" are totally different things. For me the choice is simple, I wouldn't want the iPhone because the screen is too small. The apps can be fantastic and fluid on the iPhone, I will enjoy them more on a (much) larger 4.8" screen. The iPhone 5 seems to really have a (exynos 5 based) dual core A15 based processor, which is pretty neat. The performance should be really great while battery life will be solid as well. Anyway, it all doesn't matter because the screen is too small!
So I would say think about this, if you still have doubts between the iPhone 5 and the S3 (whatever version)

Maybe the same processor used in new Sony smartphones.

Not exynos, exynos based or exynos cousin.
It is apple A6.
Also A-15 is a rumour, NOTHING is for certain.

There is no way u would choose the dual core 2gb over the quad core 2gb. Thats a joke. They done a comparison and the dual core 2gb is equal to the quad 1gb. So let's just imagine the quad with 2gb

I also own both devices and I've been having such a hard time deciding on which one to keep and which one to sell. The US version definitely is jerkier on ICS. I'm downloading the T-Mobile JB leak right now, but I was running one of the Canadian leaks and it still felt jerky like ICS was. Battery life between the two seems pretty even although the International seems to win out. Also I'm on Straight Talks so LTE isn't a factor for me. The US model probably due to the modems and what not seems to be better with straight talk than my International does. Sound quality I have to say is better on the i9300 vs. 747. Even with cheapo headphones I was noticing some songs sounded worse on the i747 vs. i9300. I'm still going back and forth. The 2gb of ram is nice, but I really haven't seen any difference in the Ram usage between the two. The S4 seems to kill background processes the same as the Exynos. There definitely seems to be more development for the International model over the US one, but seeing as Sprint, T-Mo, AT&T, and Verizon are all the same there's still a lot of development and if one gets a better leak than the others it quickly gets ported.

I never really noticed until I was listening to songs on random. Usually when I go for a run I use my Zune HD for music, but I was using my i747 so I could use one of those GPS running apps and I was thinking man I don't remember this song sounding so muffled and flat.

I have both as well and I'm thinking of using my i9300 as a media player/gaming device and stripping out all the phone stuff and using my i747 for phone functions like surfing the web texting etc.. for the LTE connection (which has spoiled me) But I think I would look pretty funny on the subway with two of the exact same devices. One for my music and one for texting.. hahha
Quad core is the way forward, if you wanted a dual then in all honesty there are better phones out there for the price tag.
A lot of people say that the extras cores aren't always utilized and they're partly right, but the overall feel of the system and gaming in particular will shine through on a quad as opposed to the dual offering.
If you have the honour of being able to choose between them, then you have to weigh up whether you want quad core or 4G.
Personally i've got wifi most places i go and HSPA is rapid for me so it's a no brainer but some ppl just want more, i myself think it's an unnecessary sacrifice.
But thats just my opinion.
