[Q] Car Mode - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

On my last android there was a simple to activate car mode which would present you with a plain grid of apps to pick from. I know the SIII has a car mode which reads to you (and boy, could that get embarrassing with the wrong company in the car!), but is there any way to activate a default car-dock app, or is it off to the market with me?

[Q] ICS 4.0.4 Cardock?

where?
i used to have a Smart Action that everytime my bluetooth connects, it'll fire up Cardock.
now i moved on to ICS, and there's no option to run Cardock in Smart Actions.
but in TiBackup, Cardock is there! yet i dont see it in App screen either.
where do one enable/run Cardock???
I have the same problem with 4.0.4
It launches with the actual Cardock just fine. There is apparently a trigger in the connection, I don't remember being able to launch the car dock app standalone back in GB tho.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using xda premium
Currently worked this out when I decided I will no longer take my phone out of the otterbox defender case everytime I used cardock.
First off the carodck app is turned on when the usb plug, a resistor sends a signal to the phone, so i read, there is no magnet like the DX cardock.
For a dock I grabbed the $20 verizon dock from a store that has an excellent length on the arm. Though about making little extension of some sort and rig the moto dock usb on the universal or buy an otterbox holster dock from a site.
Anyhow, I use the Rotate Licensed app to force or auto force ratate screen which rotates the home screen button to landscape like the real dock does.
Then I used AnyCut, go to new shortcut, activities, then select Vehicle Mode, there may be 10 vehicle mode(s) available, try number 8, or keep trying till you get the right one that has the map, nav., music, voice search, calling, and other apps, anycut will create a shortcut somewhere on the home screen. The force nav. with home button does not work though, but with the Rotate app and this shortcut I can leave my phone in otterbox and use the uni.cardock.
Another thing I noticed it the blue on black text in maps mode is hard to read when the search is populating as you type, even with glare protector, use anycut to make shortcut to activities, Motorola Input Debug.
Thank you for this tip, it worked great!
Hiddenapps works very well too.

and what trigger would that be?
doesn't anyone uses Smart Actions to launch CarDock?
Can't I really launch this when my BlueTooth connects?
I recently updated to the 4.0.4 and found a few differences in the car dock mode that I'd like to 'fix'... if anyone can point me in the right direction.
First, every time I put it in the car dock (Verizon approved, actually for the phone) it launches the car dock mode, but it immediately comes up in VZ Navigation, trying to map me to locations with an app that I would have to pay for. Don't want it, and especially don't want it to auto launch every time I put the phone in the docking station.
Second, used to that whenever a text was received and it was in dock mode, it would read the text to me (after prompting me)... this feature is turned on, but is not working in this version.
Lastly, if I move out of the car dock mode while it's in the dock, how can I get it back? Used to you'd hit the home button and, while in car dock station, it would send it back to that mode. The only way I've been able to get it back to car dock mode is to unhook the USB connection/charging connection and rehook it, basically resetting it to car dock mode. (then having to go through the VZ Navigation stuff again!)
Any guidance is greatly appreciated!

Someone would need to write a new car control app that would launch the "Vehicle mode" instead of "car mode" the name changed, from what I can tell, from GB to ICS and that is what causing the old apps to no longer work...

Pull down menu, touch the car dock icon, and it good back for me.

Perhaps I'm missing something because I am not finding a car dock icon, which is part of the problem. If I found one, I'd be glad to use it.
(Update: Restarted the phone, and this morning, saw the vehicle mode option on the pull down menu to return me to that mode. Thank you!!!!)
Additionally, used to when the phone was in the car dock, it would stay "on" no matter what. Now I'm noticing that the screen turns off if it's not on the home screen of the car dock app, like if I'm on the phone, the phone's screen will go blank. If I'm on the home screen in the car dock mode, I have not noticed it going black, but on any other screen it times out.

[Q] Voice Dialer Not Working Properly

Has anyone used a Bluetooth headset to do voice dialing with the HTC One?
My [Bose] Bluetooth headset does not works with the One although it works fine on my 4G Slide. With the Slide, press once on the Bluetooth button to start the voice dialer, and press once more to cancel. With the HTC One, there is no cancel. It keeps asking me to enter a command (or name of person to call). I tried a different Bluetooth headset and got the same results.
Then I turn off the Bluetooth headset and use the microphone in the phonebook and, for example say "call Johnny." Although Johnny is in my phonebook, the words "call Johnny" appears where the calling number is and all I get is a button "Save to People."
So if anyone knows, please let me know if a) you successfully used a Bluetooth headset to make calls, and b) if it doesn't works, does voice dialing directly with the phone works?
On a smaller problem, my friend send me a pix thru the text app, and I receive this text, "The media content was not included due to a picture resolution or message size restriction." Anyone has this problem and is there a fix?
Oh, on the 1st issue, I looked at the text to speech engine and it is Google tts. I tried a different engine (IVONA) and still no go.
Probably going to return and get the Samsung S4.

Have you tried this test? I can verify several bluetooth devices will launch the voice dialer when you are NOT in car mode, but though it launched it, it does not listen over bluetooth, It only starts it. Please test it in CAR mode and see if your bluetooth button has the same issues I posted below or if it works properly for you.

Just got back from fishing so my mind is still a little foggy, and when reading your link, I don't think it is what I am after. I mean I want to be able to just press the button on the Bluetooth Headset (BH) to make a call to someone. My phone could be in the next room, no where near my BH.
I don't even know where the Car Mode is. Is that the screen when I go into the Phone, and press the microphone on the lower right hand corner, correct? I did and a box with Google and Red microphone pops up and say "Speak now." So I say "Call Charlie" Then only the Voice Search box pops up that shows "call Charlie" and just wait there. So this certainly does not dial Charlie automatically for me.
Again, I do not want to even touch the phone when I do the Voice dialing with my BH.
So no one here has a problem using Voice Dialing with the BH?
Btw I don't even get that screen ""PLEASE WAIT A FEW SECONDS WHILE UPDATING CONTACTS AND MUSIC".." or something like that.
You are missing what I'm saying..
The feature you want is in CAR mode and when you press the Bluetooth button in CAR mode it does something different then when you're not in CAR mode. To go to CAR mode either a have:
(A) special doc which automatically launch is it or
(B) simply go into your app drawer and find the steering wheel icon/app that says CAR.
When you are in this mode in the bottom right hand corner there's an icon called SPEAK.
THIS IS WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR.
Unfortunately it seems to be broken, if you press the button/icon in the CAR mode which is the same as pressing the Bluetooth button it works..
but when you press the Bluetooth button it just hangs there..
try this and you'll see what I mean
Told you I am still dazed....
You are absolutely right. Pressing the Speak will dial the person. Pressing the Bluetooth it opens up "Just one moment, ...." and hangs there.

By the way, the voice we hear from pressing the "Speak" button in the Car Mode is a different voice from the one we hear just by pressing the Bluetooth headset button to activate Voice dial command. So those 2 apps are probably using different text to speech engine. If only we can change the setting so that the Bluetooth activated voice dial use the same settings as the "Speak" in the Car Mode setting, I think we can call someone just by using the Bluetooth and not have to go into Car Mode.

When you say the two voices are different I assume you mean when you are not in CAR mode and you press the Bluetooth button.
Yes that is actually Google's voice dialer that now just recently works over Bluetooth and it is mostly accurate and finally has voice confirmation instead of just dialing the number like it use to.
Its good but it is not as good as SPEAK which only works in CAR mode.
That is made by a company called NUANCE. They have the better software. They are the same people who make the apps known as Vlingo, Dragon, and also S-Voice ,which is on the Samsung Galaxy series of phones.
For now I'm having to use the Google version but I would much rather use SPEAK because SPEAK also lets you play music by voice and it does the same thing, it confirms what you want to hear by saying: This song? and if you say NO it asks about the next song and the next song and so on just like the voice dialer does.
and finally since I have the official dock, when I am in CAR mode which I always am because of the dock. I can not use the Google Voice Dialer. In CAR mode if I press the Bluetooth button it launches SPEAK.
I have to managed to get it to launch the Google voice dialer even when in car mode but it has taken me 3 dollars in automation apps and some configuration to make it do what it should have done the way it is suppose to out of the box.
I shouldn't have to though, I should be able to use SPEAK.
SILLY HTC..
At least it's working for you. Mine is not working, in the Car mode or straight from Bluetooth (not in Car mode).

When you're not in CAR mode there's nothing on the screen but the voice still says 'Say a number or name to call' and then if you speak it, it will then repeat back that name or number and ask you to say 'ok' if the number or contact it repeats is correct or 'cancel' if it repeats back an incorrect number or contact but there is nothing on the screen when it does this...
so what happens exactly when you try to call with not being in CAR mode?
It keeps dialing the wrong name. If I use the Speak in Car mode, it will get the right name.

Though the Google dialer is not young it is young in the sense that it just now supports Bluetooth dialing AND call confirmation it has a long way to go to catch up with Nuance. Unfortunately we all got expensive phones that came with a great dialer it just doesn't work when you press the button I guess we'll have to wait for a fix..
after speaking with HTC tech support I understand it probably will not come from them, they just can't even understand the basic concept of what I'm trying to tell them so its up to some other people like us to talk about it and finally gets response from them which seems like it might be a while.
I have more faith that some genius here in the developer forums will come up with it before they do..

[Q] Change/Fix ROM Settings/Menu Options via ADB

Hello,
Rather an unusual problem, i dont intentionally want to go the difficult ADB way, being the novice I am. However I cannot access a usual settings in my current favorite ROM, so I need a way to get to it.
I have been using this ROM on my S4 i9500. I am unable to find an option in the ROM for Day Dream. In other ROMs, when on the daydream setting screen, there is option via the menu button, to choose when the DayDream should work "While Charging" or "While Docked" on while on either of them.
In Ozcan 6.3 ROM we can only choose the daydream to be ON or OFF, the menu button does not work to let us choose the conditions for daydream.
In my case I have a Samsung multimedia dock which I normally use for charging as well. So when I dock the phone , it is recognized as "Docked" hence the daydream is never activated. Otherwise if I simply connect a charger to mobile, the daydream starts after a while.
So I need to know is there a way we can change this settings to be able to daydream also when the phone is DOCKED, it serves me well as being a bed side alarm clock.
I guess there should be a way to change this settings directly via the ROM settings files or via ADB. Only need your guidance and support to know how.
Hope I was able to explain my problem.
Thanks.

Is there any way to remotely change settings on a Galaxy Alpha with a broken LCD?

I have a Galaxy Alpha with a broken screen from a drop. The device seems to be able to boot up, but screen is black so I cant even see anything. Samsung is asking me for 2/3 of what I paid for it, in order to replace the broken screen. Which is a non-starter.
The phone is really only of use to me as a "home" for the Gear app for syncing my Samsung Gear S watch. Unfortunately I had the phone offline and sync was off, at the time I dropped it. I'd rather not buy another phone just as a home for the watch and obviously, I dont want pay for a new screen when the cost is almost price of buying the phone.
Is there anyway for me to turn on the sync remotely or via a host PC? Just so I can turn the sync on and keep being able to use the email on my smartwatch. I have tried the find my phone on Google dashboard but my only option there is to wipe the device or make a call to it, but I cant control any of the settings otherwise.
Any ideas helpful...

Wireless Dex

Hi guys,
I recently got my Galaxy Tab S6 LTE version in Germany and I am amazed.
I wanted to know whether someone has already looked at "force desktop mode on secondary display" and has attempted to replace the "desktop mode" with dex ...
All the best and thanks for your time,
Kevin
This is actually Android 10 feature - Android 10 Desktop mode
I know
I am wondering whether it is possible to replace the android desktop mode that is forced upon secondary displays with samsung's iteration of a desktop mode

I just tried it. Currently this option doesn't make anything when is on.
If I connect the tablet to another display just duplicate the screen. If I turn on DeX, the tablet stays in tablet mode and DeX runs on the external display.

Yeah, I've seen videos of that before
I still think you misunderstand, though I might be unclear
I do not mean starting dex.
I mean the option to FORCE desktop mode on external displays, so when I connect to a cheap chromecast-alternative from ebay (or the connect app on windows 10 for testing purposes) the internal desktop mode starts on the external device.
I wonder whether it is possible to "force dex instead of desktop mode" thus enabling me to use dex wirelessly.
I know that standard-behavior is using dex, but I need a cable with that. The force desktop mode makes the thing wireless.
SO technically it is possible to use a desktop mode (dex-like) without attaching wires.
I wonder whether it can be done in a simple way by modifying dev-settings to force dex instead of desktop mode
sorry if I am being unclear or it does not make any sense
Sure it's interesting to try but wireless displays' capability quality and latency wise are lacking. So is of dex's too.
I hear you.
I am certainly mit Up for the Task ?
If I Recall correctly, Huawei offers Wireless Desktop Mode. I hope either some clever devs or Samsung will come Up with a brilliant wireless solition...
With native Desktop Mode I guessed it being here earlier rather than later.
