Can't charge because I am draining too much ;/ Scotty to bridge She got no power left - HTC Amaze 4G

I drive a VW GTI, I got a bogus speeding ticket (I was going with the flow of traffic!), I was so pist that I went out and bought a Escort Redline (Radar Detector) with the Escort Live app. Essentially my radar detector connects to my phone via blue tooth. I also have my car's stereo has bluetooth (for phone calling) that is also hooked up to my phone via blue tooth. On top of that I also have GPS enabled.
When I plug my car charger, I get a message saying I can't charge my phone because I am using more power then what I am putting back into the phone. Other then the obvious, is there a solution for this problem that allows me to keep this set up without draining the hell out of my battery?
I am using ICS Energy rom (because its awesome!) and the charger is a proprietary device from Escort that plugs into the 12v slot, and the charger has a USB plug in that I just plug my phone into.

I do basic texting and fb, it tells me that as well muchless your setup, lol.

Sounds like the charger is only a 500 mA instead of the 1A you need for the power you're drawing. The stock charger is a 1A

Good god how to you get by! lol! At least yours doesn't drain, I think every 15 minutes kills like 20%. I wouldn't mind if it could just break even, not lose or gain any power.
I'll look into the stock HTC car charger. I really don't want that many wires in my car, I was hoping to use just the one to power the Radar Detector and also my phone. I do have another 12v in the back trunk, I guess I could buy an extension and run it through the floor (under the mat) to the front.
Hey was it just me or was the site offline for like 20 minutes?

I get that message using the stock charger and yeah it was down for a bit, try reducing your background programs, dropping your brightness to the lowest possible setting and change screen timeout, etc, see how much load you can reduce other than those that you want to have running.

I have two stock and like six other chargers around my house, so defective is a nope, I don't have a car yet either.
Forgot to mention I was on Telus stock, light tweaked.

Really? Stock? Why is that? Circuit board going bad then? Seems odd that it would say that when your not doing anything. I tried Speed Rom for about a week, it is sooo glitchy ;/
Yeah I notice a lot of the Devs here are pretty young lol. I'm 27, this car is my first buy xD SO! I recommend a radar detector when you buy a buy/own a car, and if it legal, also laser/radar jammers! You will save yourself time and money! I live in California, stupid state one of two that bans laser jamming ;/

NYC probably has that ban as well, since it's practically hardcore like cali is, na, my device is fine, it happened on my first device, but I think it's due to my background apps and screen brightness that uses more power than the charger can push at times.

Your car charger should at least be a 1 amp output. Plug it into the phone and check the Power status. Should be "Charging AC" otherwise it's not 1 amp charger.
Sam's club sells one for 10 bucks.

charging drastically slows the phone down

It's mainly with the wall charger. I have an adapter to use my car charger in the wall. I'm not sure why it slows the phone down. Texting especially a nightmare.
The original charger provided with the phone, or some cheap eBay/China one?
Not the original charger. It's a vz one though
Try the original one. Some aftermarket ones have poor filtering, and will cause problems. Most often noticed as a jumpy touchscreen, but other issues, too. If it works fine on the original, get Verizon to exchange theirs (test the replacement in the store) or return it.
I think it may be this adapter
You didn't accidentally set a low set CPU profile did you?

It doesn't matter if it's a VZW car charger, you are using some no-name cheaply made in China POS adapter. This is definitely the reason you are having problems when it is plugged in.
That's what I'm thinking. I may have to get a new adapter because I don't want this to affect my battery life in the long run

Get the actual HTC one, any of this cheap knockoff crap could be killing the battery.
Same thing here....original VZW charger that came with the phone.
is it just that the touch screen isn't responsive but the phone still runs fine? i have this issue with the original HTC charger so i'm using the one from my moto droid and it doesn't have any problems.
Same issue here. Phone slows down drastically when charging, especially when trying to type on the touch screen. Using original wall charger and cord that came in the box.
The whole system slows down. The keyboard doesn't respond, it takes forever to answer a call etc. I have to unplug it if I'm gonna constantly be using it. I thought it was the adapter, but after seeing everyone else's comments, I'm not too sure anymore

do apps run smoothly? something like angry birds is good to test with this. even if it's hard to play, you can see if the app itself runs normally or slow.
i also have problems with some keys (keyboard) while not charging, the key will stop working and after either typing another word or pressing the key plenty of times, it'll be normal again for a while.
taintphuck: you can try getting the charger replaced first, see if that fixes it.

My SGS2 internally imploded this morning (or something like that)

I plugged my eleven-day-old Galaxy S II up last night to the Samsung charger connected to the Samsung AC adapter that came with it. I then put it underneath the pillow beside me (not the pillow I sleep on; I do this so that I don't knock it off during the night) and went to bed. When I went to grab it this morning, the phone pretty much burnt my hand. I dropped it quickly and let it cool down for a moment. I had no success with turning it on and, when I got back from school, still had no luck. I ended up taking it back and exchanging it for another one.
It really doesn't bother me that much considering the volume up button on the other one stuck a little. And now I can't get CWM to flash on this one. It seems like nothing is going right for me today.
Woah!!
Definitely gotta be careful with that. These phones do need to breathe in a sense but glad it wasn't worse and you were able to return it. I bet you won't do that one again.
Yeah, definitely do not charge any electronic device while under a pillow because charging generates heat and there is no way for the heat to escape while it's under a pillow, so it builds up. As for flashing CWM, what happens when you use odin?
Sent from my SGS II.
The exact same thing happened to me w a NS4G, never again.
That happen to me but not to that extent, i did it all the time with other phones but I guess I should avoid doing that from now on.
It happened to me a couple of times with different phones. I think when I checked the temp it was like 127F lol
By far this phone is the hottest device i have. The thin profile of the phone can't really dissipate the heat that well. But anyway sorry to hear this about your phone. Good luck with fixing things.

Sounds like a faulty battery pack or charging hardware in the phone - for safety reasons, charging of Li-Ion batteries is suspended if the pack reaches 50C (122F) or less. It sounds like either your pack has a faulty temp sensor or your phone did not terminate charge when the temp rose too high. (I assume that Samsung has such termination circuitry onboard as they would never receive certifications otherwise). You are very lucky, as Li-Ion batteries have a propensity for exploding/catching on fire when overheated during charge.

[Q] HTC Amaze Stock Charger and Battery Issues

My HTC Amaze will not hold a charge. I am using the stock included USB Wall plug and the Micro EXT 12 Pin Cable which only comes with the AMaze (it is also included with the Flyer Tablet). When I first plug in the phone to charge the charge light blinks orange for five minutes and then remains solid. When I return hours later the light is totally out (no green indicator light showing a full charge which I used to get). When I try to turn on the phone the Screen flashes for a split second but nothing happens.
I tried to troubleshoot by swapping in my HTC Sensation battery and that does power up the AMAZE. I have now switched the included Amaze charger with the one that came with the HTC Sensation. The orange power light comes on immediately although it only blinked with the other charger. I am worried that maybe the Power adapter is frying my batteries.
Does anyone know if these included chargers share the same specifications for the Sensation, Amaze etc??? Anyone else experience this problem??
The only thing I can think of is your version of Recovery. I know that the phone will not charge while it is turned off if you have not flashed the most recent version that includes the fix for this problem. Try turning the phone on and then plugging it in to the charger.

Is there a fix for this problem? Does the version of recovery affect the phones ability to charge when its turned off?
either recovery or faulty battery! what happens when you put amaze battery in to sensation?
HTC Amaze Battery
When I put the HTC amaze battery into the Sensation and try to charge it the light blinks. Then after 5 minutes goes solid orange. After hours the light shuts off and I unplug it and try to power up but NOTHING. Dead. I purchased two Anker batteries, tried to charge them in Sensation. One works fine but cannot be charged in the HTC Amaze. I have even tried it with both the White Amaze USB cable and both the HTC Amaze included charger and the Sensation included charger. ( I believe they are the same model). Could it be the USB connection is somehow not allowing the phone to charge?
Doesnt HTC warranty the battery for any period of time???

Yes, there is a fix if that is indeed the issue. Are you able to determine what version of recovery you are using? It could still be a faulty battery though.

After rooting and using custom roms I don't think there is any battery issues. IMO Battery life is great. Tell me something, what is it that really drains the battery on the Amaze? Is it the 4G? Thing is, my device would be on WiFi for the majority of the day. I've seen some apps where you can auto switch network based on proximity. So I'd only be using 3G/4G while I'm in transit.
Also, is there a way to disable 3G/4G so as to only get EDGE?

When I walk in my house, my WiFi comes on and 4g turns off... No special app... I think its a feature of the ROM I use. Sometimes it doesn't kick in until I open my WiFi networks though. If you have WiFi on though when you aren't connected to a network, the constant scanning will drain your battery.
Also, other things that drain the battery:
Sense Widgets... Although attractive, huge battery Hog
Live Wallpapers - Duh
Overclocked Kernels... Faster performance = Faster drain
Heavy usage... When the screen is always on and the data network is constantly being used, it also drops.
On the new Energy ROM, its nice because when your phone is not being used, neither is your battery. My phone went 3 hours with only changing 1%.

Did somebody make a statistic - which SOFTWARE drain battery more quick on Amaze?
Are there any apps that select Wifi based on your GPS location? I'm just trying to figure out how I can get this phone and actually be able to use it without having to pull an arm and a leg.
Battery issues
hey guys, i've had an amaze for about a month now, and these last 2 weeks that i've had it, the phone will randomly shut off once a day when im at or around 50%. I'm not sure if this is a battery or a hardware issue. I have used a non-stock charger and cord to charge it 2 times a week so i'm not sure if this might have anything to do with it. I have the official unofficial ICS update, did a full wipe, relocked the bootloader and unlocked it again and basically put a clean ICS on it. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Llama. It doesn't even use GPS, it uses cell towers to determine location, which your phone's doing already.

This link shows the new 12 pin technology that MUST be used with the Amaze. This is a real pain, just purchased two HTC-Amaze phones and taking them back for the Galaxy.
I hate it when they change technology and make all your charging cords in your phones and your computers obsolete and don't tell you. Also, the Amaze is designed for European drivers. The charging cord plugs into the left-upper middle of the phone and it is dangerous to pick up to unplug wile driving because the cord hits the steering wheel. How do you spell DANGER? Really heavy and clunky phone too. Galaxy has bigger screen and is lighter - another reason to pass on the Amaze. Be careful with this phone if you aren't aware it is in a tech world of it's own. Just replacing the charging cords in our autos and computers cost more than the phone. Sheesh!

I use a standard micro USB to charge my Amaze. Works fine.
I think you may mean "designed for English drivers", since they are the only European country that drives on the left side of the street and thus have the driver on the right side. But in any case one is not supposed to be messing around with the power while driving anyway.

As mentioned, conventional microUSB cords work fine, and some of HTC's own documentation says so, some even recommend it. I do find I get a better/faster charge using HTC's cables, but they are functionally the same as microUSB. The odd connector is more secure, though -- it's longer and inserts further in the socket.
You should not be picking up or juggling your phone while driving. Period. End quote. Just don't.
I am also disappointed to the Nth degree with the Amaze, actually not so much the phone which is lovely and solid and attractive and loaded with hardware features, I'm furious with HTC's absolutely stupid mess with drivers, and refusal to quickly resolve issues with the software. It's October, 10 months after purchase, and I have problems with WiFi, Android Beam, Bluetooth, surprise shutdowns (just finding the phone has turned off by itself). In short, it's failed to function as a reliable phone.
I'll never buy from them again. Never. Ever. Google Nexus phones for me from now on, and not on a carrier contract either. I've been burned for the last time.

From what I've read, the shutdowns may be caused by the battery. You might want to try replacing the battery you are using. So far I have not found one better than the OEM.

I just picked up a wireless charging pad from my VZW store.

Great. I'm curious if the beep happens every time the charger kicks on (I believe it shuts off automatically when the phone is fully charged) or if it's just one "beep" when the phone is set down on it.
Either way, I'll probably be disconnecting the speaker since I will use one bedside (don't want to wake the sig other) and one at work and don't want to bother my coworkers either.

i was on the fence yesterday about getting it, and picked it up today and i am so glad i did. i especially like how firm of a grip it has. i still think i may pick up the energizer one from amazon so i can have one at home and one at the office
I'm thinking of picking up the LG pad (and ripping the speaker out) to put on my desk. I can't think of anything more convenient that just putting the phone down and it charging up. I'll probably continue to use a charger at night for now. I'm not really crazy about the LG pad, and you know there'll be more options out there soon. I'd rather hold off and get one that's maybe more stylish, or slimmer (and no beep!) before I invest in a second pad.
I'd like to see a USB powered pad if possible, so I could toss it in my bag and take it to work with me (no free outlets at my desk so I currently charge my phone through the USB port).
I just ordered the nokia charger from verizons website, it is compatible with DNA.
Long Term Use
I have read that wireless charging causes the battery to get warmer than corded charging. I wonder since this is a non-replaceable battery will that effect the overall life of the battery. Is anyone else worried about long term use of a charging pad. I love the idea but wonder if it will cause issues later on.

What I'm worried about is the constant charging and discharging that will happen when we're forced to charge it over night, at work, and then in the car.
also picked up a wireless pad for the dna and it was only $35 on amazon! i was shocked! great deal! dont know how far away it will work from the pad???

The phone has to be on the pad for it to charge.

so it wont work an inch above at all?
I didn't see it answered anywhere, but if you go with the wireless charger will you be able to keep a slim case on it? I don't want to put an otterbox on it or anything since it is already a pretty big phone, but I would like to put one of those slim form-fitting cases on it.

[Q] LG Qi Charging Pad

Who has this and how does it work with the DNA? I read on Amazon that it has a really loud beep when you place it down or pick it up, or if it reaches full charge, etc. Another reviewer said they simply opened it up and pulled out the speaker.
So I do have this. Works great.
Oddly enough if the phone was on vibrate I don't remember it beeping.

I could only take a couple nights of being woken up by the beep before I ripped into it. Here's a thread on how to "disable" the speaker.

Here's a photo of my speaker.

I have it. It only beeps when you first lay the phone on the pad. Love the convenience and mine is sitting on my nightstand, so the initial beep doesn't bother me since I'm obviously awake (I hope) when I place it on the pad.
I have it as well. It makes a loud beep when you put the phone down, and will beep if the phone isn't correctly placed. I have it on my bed stand and I have never been woken up by it beeping when it fully charges.
I just ordered one on amazon because they are 39+shipping rather than 79+shipping...
Honestly, this phone is perfect in every single way besides sense isn't my favorite Rom and the battery life. I have to charge it once during the day in addition to charging it overnight. Which is why I ordered this charging pad so I can just set it on that when I'm at home doing work or what have you.

they are only $49.99 at VZW. If you have a corporate discount, it brings it down to $37.50. I went this way, no waiting and much easier for warranty issues.
charging with otterbox case
Will the QI charger work with an ottebox case on the phone?

Mine is slow as well. I just put it on the plate at night and it's charged when I wake up, but very hot.

Typical of wireless charging. It charges no faster than USB.
I think the heat may come from the wireless charging coil.
I ordered one last week for $34 shipped from Amazon. Got it Friday. Works like a charm and don't think it's that loud either
Not an iPhone.....
My concern is that the heat will hurt the life of the device.
Unfortunately the heat comes with the territory.
LG Charging Pad
I bought this charger and have noticed a problem that seems like it could be a defect. When I place the phone on the pad it beeps (no big deal). After a while when the phone gets to a full charge the phone beeps (no big deal). What I don't like is that the phone does not actually ever get to a "full" charge. On the pad I have, it seem to only get to about 99 percent and then stop charging only to start again after a few seconds. Almost every time the charging stops and starts, the screen lights up and whenever the charging kicks on again it does the glorious beep. I read this from one other person on a forum so I hope this is just a defective unit. Can anyone tell me if when using this charger, your phone charge light ever turns green? When using this pad, my phone's charge light never turns green and I'm concerned that by using this my phone is getting a lot of extra wear and tear from the on/off of screen and charging. I already contacted the vendor and I think I'm going to do an exchange. If the second one has this behavior, i'm probably just going to scrap it for the Nokia even though they're more expensive. It would seem you get what you pay for I guess and i'd rather not take a chance...

Was your phone hot or just the charger? I'm curiuos to as to what the long term affect is going to be but its a risk I'm willing to take for the convience of wireless charging. I'm still waiting to see if it will charge through an Otterbox.

For me, its just the phone.
If I use a wireless charging pad at my office, is it going to hurt the battery in any way to be constantly picking up the phone and putting it back down on the charging pad, i.e. constant short charging periods? Will it effect long term battery life or possible just throw off the calibration?

I just started a new thread in Q/A on this very question.

I ordered the Nokia charger from Verizon Online directly. I have a 35% discount so it was $35ish shipped. Most should have a Verizon discount so check that before ordering only from Amazon.
