The new Google Earth - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Has any else tried the new Google Earth on our Transformer Primes. The updates are pretty amazing, but it runs like crap on my Prime. I get constant freezes, lags, ANR's, screen tearing, screen flickering, screen flashing, screen corruption, and crashes. Seems to happen whenever I pan/rotate and Google Earth needs to download a BUNCH of data to fill in the visuals on the screen. I'm on the latest .28 firmware. It's like the browser issue but 1,000 times worse.

Yeah, I have the same issues. Whenever I try to get close to a large city, in GE with the new 3D maps, the whole screen just starts flickering und can not be used any longer. It seems to only concern the app though, as I can exit via the Home button and continue to use the tablet.

It seems like the perfect testing app for our devices
It runs fine on mu Gnex.

I was messing with the app right before I updated it and it was working great. Silky smooth. I updated it and it was running pretty bad so I cleared the cache and increased its size and it now seems to be running better. I actually had to try and make it lag.

I just used it for 10 minutes or so with no crashes or other problems. ??

Earth and Maps have both been causing me troubles.

Ha. I posted about this in the. 28 review thread last night. Google Earth puts my Prime in ANR hell. Glad I bought such a powerful quad core tablet. Thanks a lot, Asus.

You mean the "cache" in Earth settings or in tablet settings/apps?! I increased the caching, but haven't cleard the cache, same for my GNex which works!?

Oh, by the way: Mass Effect Infiltrator causes the same problem for me after a while.

Same situation here. It works flawlessly on my dual-core Galaxy Nexus, but like dog crap on my quad-core Transformer Prime. This is why I will only buy Nexus products in the future, so long as they're not made by Awful Asus.

I had major problems and much like the above poster, I cleared cache and all was well.

Working fine for me. No crashes, zooms in and out fine, love the new features and a more detailed 3d buildings. This update makes finding attractions much simpler.

I cleared the cache. Set the data cache to large. In the general tablet system settings, I had use GPS location service checked so unchecked that setting and checked use location by wifi and new Google Earth now runs much much smoother.

Can you tell me how you increased it's size?
I assume you mean increased the memory allocated, but I'm not sure how you do that.
Thanks!

I cleared the cache and it still ran like crap. I changed my tablet from normal mode to performance mode and it's at least usable now. Still not smooth like my Galaxy Nexus, but it's not ANR'ing on me at the moment. I'm sure it will though...

Nevermind. Freezes and ANR's up to wazoo still. Quad-core power!

Well I tried and man its so slow the browser flies in comparsion. Oh I was in Rome.
Can I just blame it all on i/o?

I've seen users of other high end phones and tablets complaining of the same issue, so I don't think it is just us. It's worth the slowness, Rome, Italy looks absolutely stunning in 3D.

It's not just slowness. It's COMPLETE lockups followed by ANRs. It's essentially unusable.

1080p working on "lg camera" from market with updating observations

ATRIX users, check this camera app out. It has 1080p working. I will post more results when I do more testing of the app for smoothness and ability to work well. There is a paid version and a free version. My phone is stock gingerbread and it works.
Observations:
Colors are richer
Recording choppy, but playback not as much
Will do more observations.

Mostly during the recording of it. The playback is smoother than recording.
Sent from my Atrix 4G with XDA Premium App
Same 10 sec static image with no audio. You will see the file sizes for D3 and lg are very close. The lgcamera app timer is running too fast, hence it showing only an actual 9-1/2 secs in GSpot, when I was closer to 10-1/2 seconds using the apps timer. Playback of both videos on a 24" 1080p monitor was crap for both samples, so I am not convinced anyone has yet given us true hardware/firmware supported 1080p on the Atrix. My position is that it will take a dev to do some serious work, or Moto to release an update which gives true support. If 1080p were this easy to get on the Atrix, Moto would have done it at release.
<edit> Notice the D3 is running at 31fps. I haven't verified if this is consistent across multiple samples.
<edit 2> After reading the OP again, I would say I noticed no difference in colour, clarity, etc., between either video samples.

I have no video lag or delay. But will put up on plasma flatscreen to check. I have sound
Sent from my Atrix 4G with XDA Premium App
The reason I don't use sound to test is because sound is unpredictable, and can make a big difference to file size. Similarily I take video with a static image so that I have the best chance of reproducing the same results multiple times. If you video moving objects and/or pan and scan, your bit rate changes a lot, and again you will never achieve like results. I do pan and scan to test for jitter, etc., but not to pull data from for comparisons.
On another note, how does the audio sound through an external source?
I have not checked this with the camcorder at all yet.
I am interested to see how it performs at concerts. I have seen a couple of videos of concert footage, and the audio doesn't seem too bad.
it work in my 2.3.4 with custom rom too

I would normally agree with you here, but with the leaked LTE Atrix 2, I have a feeling they're not going to include it just because that will give you another reason to go to the Atrix 2. It's very possible with our hardware, and software shouldn't matter too much (hell, if LG can do it, anyone can). I honestly think we've been shafted. With that said, my D3 Camera with build prop edits does make files that are much larger than the 720p counterparts. I don't have a 1080p display to test it on, but when I stop stills they do look more crisp (which is really the only reason to use 1080p for me [that said, maybe it's just the placebo effect]).

I would tend to agree with you here, if the leaked MB865 is indeed the Atrix 2. If it does happen to be so, Motorola will never see another red cent from me after this. I like the Atrix, but if they are about to release a 2nd derivative of this phone so soon, then this proves they knew all along while they were developing it that we would not get all that was promised on the MB860.
Tried it on my HDTV
I tried it on my Samsung HDTV and the monitor indicated the video was 1080x1920. Picture looked good to me.
Note: I did have to go into settings on entertainment center and check that I wanted 1080 playback if file was recorded higher than 720.

what do people think of 480x800 pixels?

i just want to get an idea of what others think of that display resolution. I am used to iphones retina display so to me it looks aot worse... writing isnt clear..just looks yucky.. but what do others think?
480x800 is a resolution not pixels. Anyway, to me it doesn't matter at all due to the ppi increase and the larger screen size.
ppi is still like 100 less then iphones... the larger screen size means jack if resolution is crap..true?

+1. The iPhone's screen is a bit sharper when viewing text, but the colors that the GSII produce are unlike any other non-Samsung device. Super vibrant, perfect screen size (for me), and battery-saving.

Certain flash access to sites, no conversion for media content, plays all .mkv format with subtitle support on the fly. Stuff like that isn't really capable on an iphone because it lacks support or just requires more time input to make it work, by tedious conversions.

seems like this guy is just trying to stir up ****.....who goes into a forum for a particular product and asks the users if their product is crappier than another product
im not trying 2 stir nothing up... i just think iphones win in overall performance and simplicity
The iphone wins in regards to sharpness and gaming performance. But here's the thing. Give it 1-2 yrs before that gpu is finally put to use (by the time 2 yrs cone you'll be on your next phone, so whooptydoo) . So in other words, whatever game or not comes out right now for the iphone, the sgs 2 can more than handle them. The sgs 2 of course wins in customizability, no contest is that.
$1 gets you a reply

Performance issues...

Hi,
I was very happy to get the asus transformer prime. Switching menus, in app performance were very good...until i tried some very heavy browsing (espn.go.com/boxing for example or theverge.com). Let me tell you, the browsing on this thing is horrible. I really don't understand. Everything else is so fast, it is actually faster than my ipad 2 and samsung galaxy tab 10.1 for in app performance but when it comes to browsing, it is so sluggish. My samsung tab 10.1 on honeycomb kills it. I really wonder, will this be fixed in the next update or its just like that. I tried disabling flash, performance increases by 5x...is flash 11 not optimised for ICS? Also, chrome doesnt lag as much as the stock browser. How will this be fixed
Weel, Hw accel might be causing issues and if the site is mem leaking, that could also slow you down. And flash is optimized for ICS but I don't think its well done. Oh, and make sure you got performance mode enabled.

I use mines in balanced mode and leave that hardware acceleration option in developers settings off. My browsers are super fast. Even stock. Really no matter which one I use. My favs. Are ICS+ browser and Boat browser. At the beginning stock browser use to be slow n i hated n hardly used it. Now after ICS, its fast as a mofo. Couldn't believe it. I use it alot now or ICS+ browser.

Btw i also noticed that i am on the build of 17 january version.11 from canada. I tried to make a firmware update but it says that this is the latest version availab.e Do you know if the next update is supposed to help the performance issues?

I am having same issue as you - very laggy browsing and even some lag in youtube/mail
I use Boat browser in balanced mode and it performs quiet well. I have to say at this point in time none of the browsers work as well as Chrome or Firefox on my Linux box. I suspect this will change as apps mature and optimized for ICS.
try opening more tabs
Personally everything is working super smooth on my prime. Tried checking out the websites mentioned and they all are super smooth on my prime.
I recall reading somewhere that it helps to open more tabs in the browser. That way all four cores kick in instead of using just the fifth core for low cpu usage apps and tasks.
Just a thought.

returned prime
after resetting it several times and making a post here (which a mod deleted lol b/c i told the truth about the problems i had with my prime...i guess honesty is not allowed here?)
I ended up returning the prime back to staples.
it was running ICS latest ver shipped. i used chrome beta. i used dolphin hd. i used stock.
all of them were jittery and laggy. pinch zoom was even lagging.
My samsung galaxy was better in terms of performance.
Also, I bought a transformer tf101 last year..the orig ver.. and guess what? i had the same problems.
it was laggy...youtube vids were stuttering..browsing was weak... and now..with the new prime a year later..it still blows.
it was junk...web browsing on it was a joke...very laggy and just not very smooth in terms of scrolling ..it was just hard to use.
the colors on the screen looked faded out compared to other android tabs.
overall..just not a tab that u can depend on when youre in a hurry and need to check the web without having any glitches...
i ended up buying ipad 3. its way way better than prime..sorry guys..

I could look at charts showing how great the Tegra 3 is too but it won't make my studdering browsers go away.

Basically, unless apps are Teg optimized, the performance benefit isn't that dramatic. Games and local video playback will be greatly improved (over Teg2), everything else not so much. Nvidia never met their sales targets with Teg2 and, with it almost April, probably won't hit their already lowered Teg3 targets for 2012 either. They can show optimized benchmarks and a handful of optimized games playing exceptionally well all they want. If 5% of apps available are optimized it's all an illusion. App developers never rallied around Teg2 so there's no reason to believe they'll rally around Teg3 either. The S4 creamed Teg3 in all but optimized benchmarks which, in everyday use, is how most people will judge the performance of their devices.
And we already know that, in your mind, there never has been and never will be a tablet as fantastic as the Prime, a chip as stupendous as Teg3, or a chip maker as skilled as Nvidia. Let's go with that.
I just opened both webpages in eco mode and both loaded, scrolled and worked smooth.
I'm using stock browser and HW acceleration enabled.

Hey man thank you for letting us know. I've been waiting for this game forever. @$6.99 not too bad at all.
I have had issues playing some games on a tablet. Mainly because of the touch screen. Maybe use a bluetooth mouse? Would that work?
Data download is taking forever. Must be bogged down. It needs 1.7gb of space so make sure you have enough in your Prime. I'm almost maxed out from all these game's data.
Game working perfectly on my prime!
Been downloading data for an hour n half now and we have 20mb up/down at work. So hows the game compared to Mass Effect?
---------- Post added at 05:42 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:26 PM ----------
Finally done downloading data after 1 hour 40 min. Graphics arent bad at all. Mass Effect has slight edge. Game play is pretty good just like nova 2. I do see lag though. Not as smooth as MC3. Overall not bad. Now time to go play.
Is it playable with a gamepad?
gotta have it. I will be getting this tomorrow. I have to make room...lol. these games are getting huge. time to delete stuff I don't hardly play and delete movies. I have like 12 whole movies stored in my prime.

Ok got it back working. Had to go to settings then apps and cleared cache and data on the game. This next step might not be necessary but I renamed the game folder (/android/data/com.gameloft.ANMP.GloftN3HM) to something else then opened up the game. It tried to download data again but I cancelled after several bytes. Went back to game folder and deleted the newly created one and renamed the original back. Opened game again and it redownloaded about 10 kb more then the game started. Had to start all over but hasn't locked up yet. Maybe my first download this afternoon wasnt 100% complete and was causing my lock ups.

Ya I noticed that too. I wanted to see how smooth the ipad version was and besides the blurr effect added to it the game is much smoother on the ipad. But we all know Gameloft is apple whores so ofcourse they're going to make their game more enhanced on ipad (referring to the blurr effect).
Its kind of a bummer though that we have tegra 3 device and although we get additional graphic enhancement on Tegra 3 optimized games yet we lose out on the ones that arent optimized for ours and suffer in performance. Id rather lose all the fancier graphics over better performance.

[Q] [Xperia S] -- Before Buying It.

First of all, Hello guys... I'm creating a new thread to address my questions because they are too many, As you can see, I'm selling my current smartphone (Already sold Lol) and I will buy an Android phone, so my choices are between Galaxy S2, and Xperia S, I would love to buy the Xperia S rather than Samsungs Smartphone, but Im dealing with the "yellowish pixels" "screen issues" thingy before I Buy it. Could you guys recommend the better choice, I've heard that the problem was solved long time ago, and screen issues were present on first batches. Btw: I'm buying the phone through Amazon, anything I should be careful of?.
2nd Problem: Good case, I mean... Otterbox Commuter style.
Get the XPS, Samsung has the same yellow tint issues. Before buying make sure your device is w16 or newer, then you should be fine.

Thanks for the reply mate, Like I said i have no access whatsoever, related to buying an specific batch or something like that. (Here I mean buying buying products released on date xx/xx/xxxx or something really specific). I'm buying the device through Amazon... and well I guess despite the screen issue I might be going for the XS. The Galaxy I'm talking about is the 9100G, Is it really true that it comes with 1.08ghz clocked (cpu) and a PowerVR SGX 540... as far as I know, adreno beats up the SGX and the Mali.. I'm i wrong??
Any Suggestions about a really good case? (amazon)

The 220 is about the same in terms of raw power, but some say the SGX540 performs better in games. I don't see any difference myself, the UI is smooth, the browser is fast and I don't really care about games too much.

Hehe, I didn't meant games, I meant .mkv content playback and h.264 vids, inside phones storage and stuff like that.. Well thank you again for your quick reply.. What about the case and buying it online? Any Seller you know or any suggestion? I'm really scared of getting a faulty phone...
^
Yes benchmarks wise the Adreno 220 in the Xperia S is more powerful than Mali 400 in GS2 and Note and of course the SGX is slower than Mali.

Plays all my anime just fine in 720p. Sometimes lag happens in 1080p, but very rarely. Don't know about the cases, I keep the phone in my backpack.
Hello,
I'm using Xperia S despite other people i will not recommend it. It has so much problems and i did not like Sony custommer service and concern.
If i had a chance i would have bought Samsung Galaxy S3.
And one more thing, if you are making supernormal phone calls, ayou should compare SAR leveles.
Xperia S 1.31 w/kg and it is over normal levels..
I like the size of the SXS less, because using it with one hand is not easy , But well all these phones with these specs are big (also screen)
The closest thing to a otterbox case i have seen would be this one probably (2 layers):

Not this one, but this looks also good in protecting, will test soon. See Bustervic's post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26280084&postcount=347

This one is the best as far as being durable and easy in and off. Adds a bit more bulk but feels nice in the hand. This will be my primary case.
I got these from TVC-Mall.com

That case kicks a$$.
Honestly it might be one of the best cases I have ever had. It fits great, protects awesome and I can still access eveything.
Not the worst case to take off all the time, and I find it pretty easy to do so.
Those tpc sides wrap nice and are really grippy.
