Has anyone claimed warranty after unlocking bootloader using the official method? - Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo, Pro

Has anyone managed to get theirs phone repaired after unlocking the bootloader through sony website?
Also everyone says that you lose warranty when you unlock the bootloader via sony website. On ythe website http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/

Please note that you MAY void the warranty of your phone and/or any warranty from your operator if you unlock the boot loader. Sony Ericsson can then no longer guarantee the full functionality of your phone, and will not be responsible for any unsigned custom software being flashed to the phone after the boot loader is unlocked. Well it says that it may void the warranty.......so there is a possibility that they would repair the phone even if it's unlocked - I'm talking about hardware repairs.

I did. Well, it wasn't repaired, but that was probably because they didn't recognize the problem (burned in screen).
On the repair ticket they said 'Modified software' but they didn't charge me anything.

Thanks a lot. Looks like I'll be unlocking my phone today

its better when you re-lock bootloader back then they will repair phone without problems

Technically they can see missing DRM certificate, if you unlock using official way. Not that they will specifically look for it but it does show when they connect it to program they use in service.

I'm in Poland - they seem to have a deal with a a company called Regenersis.

It is a "phone repairing" company.
So Regenersis is an official service center for many mobile companies in Poland including Sony. The closest office would be in Warsaw.

I used to have a wildfire S before and this question came up in that form too, so I'll give the same response here.
Unlocking your bootloader DOES NOT void your warranty.

I.e. -- If you OC your phone or install a modded kernel which screws with the hardware and breaks it it isn't their responsibility
The warranty remains though, obviously the proviso is that you don't flash a custom ROM or anything, but even then the main thing is that if you break something and re-flash stock they probably wont know tbh.
So (broken record style) No, unlocking your bootloader DOESNT void your warranty, breaking your phone by OCing it too much or screwing with it in that matter does render them non-liable for it, if your phone had a fault which was not due to custom ROMs or anything though and was in fact a sony issue warranty is maintained.
Edit: Matter of fact, within the EU they CAN'T void your warranty for pre-existing faults.
I wish people wouldn't make assertions as to the law without properly reading T&C first & some basic knowledge on EU warranty regulations.

Sony wouldn't repair their yellow tints, even this is FACTORY DEFECT

Send my Xperia S in at the end of June for the yellow tints problem. Waited two weeks and Sony replied that they wouldn't repair the phone because of "illegal unlock"?? The phone is factory unlocked. Tried to discuss this issue on http://talk.sonymobile.com/thread/34135, and 1 day later my account with sonymobile was suspended. Just feel so disappointed with Sony's customer service.

Have you unlocked your bootloader or sent it in rooted or something like that?
If that's the case, it's normal that they didn't touch it as you lost your warranty if you unlocked your bootloader. If you rooted it, you should have restored it before sending, because technically, rooting voids your warrantytoo.
Maybe you bought it used and the previous owner unlocked the bootloader and didn't tell you?
ditto (well i unlocked the bootloader, with a code provided by SONY, which is hardly illegal, but I guess they're really playing the voided warranty issue on this)

Had got the same problem with yellow tints, but my phone wasn't unlocked and has been repaired by Sony in two weeks.
If you had unlocked your phone even with the Sony method it's indicate that warranty is avoid in this case.
Interesting...with an unlocked bootloader it still shouldn't have been an issue. Your warranty is in theory still intact, just with CPU modifications and such afterwords that can void it (overclocking and such with custom kernels). In the terms it just says "may" so they avoid liability if you break it yourself. It appears in this case (and the other one posted above) they decided to throw that out the window and just say "meh, sorry, today, because it's cold and didn't sleep well, its your fault."
You didn't by any chance have Doom's kernel on when you sent it in?
It's almost like every center changes their interpretation of a voided warranty depending on the weather or if they just feel like it .
I wouldn't associate your account being blocked as Sony's fault though, as you picked a username that appears to be picked by bashing your head on the keyboard . It was probably what they thought was a spam account?
If you formatted the device then reflashed it with a stock GB firmware would anyone be able to tell that it had been unlocked ever?

Sony really need to sort themselves out, been going backwards and forwards for weeks. Latest issue is they are now claiming I purchased my phone in another country, it was supplied by my carrier.
Been a Sony fan since x10, but they are getting worse with cs. The phones are better, but they really need to train their staff.
My phone is not foreign, how the hell would they know in the first place? They've never seen the phone and I have never been asked for an imei number.
This is a joke now.

"nolramlb" hasn't been banned, his name is terrible, and he's made over 1200 posts in ONE MONTH, now that's some spam!
We over in the HTC forums have the same prob, unlock the bootloader then you lose all warranty on your phone. We have faulty WiFi antenna on the One X, the contacts don't connect the antenna correctly, HTC say that if you unlocked your bootloader you can't get the antenna fixed, no one can say how unlocking a bootloader and WiFi antenna can be connected in any way, but HTC are being dogs about it. As for the yellow tints, they are a common problem across the bord, it's only the glue sticking the screen and the glass, play some games, give your phone a good use to heat it up and you will find that,the yellow tints go after a week or so
It's odd to see that it seems all/most mobile manufactures some what lack customer service.

I did that, they repaired it the first time, second time they didn't. Isn't the DRM stuff gone forever, that's how they can tell?

haha, that's interesting. I got that username because they said my normally used one has been taken. I've never done any CPU overclocking/mod, or never had any customer kernel installed. I don't know their "illegal unlock" means network unlock or software unlock. The phone was sent back to the repair centre with original GB software.
Here is the feedback from Sony UK's repair center, if this can help. I can guarantee the phone is working properly with photo evidence. I don't know why see put Display broken rather than "yellow tints".etc. Now the phone sounds totally dead at the Sony repair center.
Perhaps they tested it for so long it's run out of battery!
I'd be complaining like hell right now to Sony Customer Services!!

exactly what i had with them, don't worry, it's not BER at all, there's probably not an option on their system for "owner unlocked bootloader and voided warranty"

They sent it back unrepaired, free or charge at my request. (to be honest it was't too bad, and as i've been without it for over a month in total I was getting sick of it!)

[Q] Galaxy SII bricked

Hi everyone!
So, yesterday I picked up my Galaxy S II and tried to unlock it, but the touchscreen didn't work. 5 seconds later, the phone turned off, and it is completely bricked.
I have no access to recovery, download mode, absolutely nothing. It just doesn't turn on, even if the charger is plugged in.
Obviously, my phone was rooted and flashed with the latest JB rom available. Since the phone still has almost one year and a half of warranty left, will they be able to know if the phone was rooted, and the number of Odin flashes?
I flashed my phone via Odin about 15-20 times. Since it bricked so quickly, I couldn't reset the counter and unroot.
So, what do you think?
They probably won't be able to tell, but you can never be 100% certain & nobody here can give you that certainty. Anyone who says they can is lying to you.
Give it to a service centre, say as little as possible & see what happens.

I know that it's difficult to be 100% certain, but maybe it has happened to someone and they could share their story
It was clearly some defect on the device, since I got it on late November 2012. It lasted for 8 months, and it used to get quite hot, right below the camera... is that normal on the S2?
Besides, the moment you flash something to your phone/use the phone in a manner excluded by the warranty, having an expectation of warranty service is completely unreasonable.

I know that rooting voids the device warranty, but on the other hand, the device failed not because of the rooting process, but because of some faulty hardware.
I know how warranty works, but the brick isn't related to bad use, since the rooting process worked flawlessly.
Anyway, I already delivered the phone at the service centre, now I'll just wait.

The warranty explicitly states if you use the phone in a manner not specified in the warranty (I.E use unauthorised firmware), all bets are off. Whether flashing unauthorised firmware caused the problems or not doesn't matter. If you expect warranty, leave your phone stock.

Or just be honest....and admit to voiding your warranty and learn from your mistake. I know that is not what you want to hear or you may not hear that to often....

[Q] Root and Warranty

Just a quick question which may have been asked many times before. on a Sony Z2, does rooting the phone void the warranty for certain or is it a 'maybe'?
with samsung and HTC you get a clear warranty void.
ROOTING VOIDS WARRANTY.... thats it, regardless of manufacturer, country, network, whatever. If you root a phone its warranty becomes void.
However depending on the phone, it may be possible to unroot and remove any indication that it ever was rooted, therefore allowing you to claim on warranty...... Not currently possible on z2 as you need to back up drm keys, which requires root, to aquire root you need to unlock the bootloader first, unlocking the bootloader deletes drm keys..... sorry
It depends on how do you root...
1- Rooting by unlocking the bootloader then root - Warranty void as the DRM destroyed and there's no way to have them back...
2- Rooting without unlocking the bootloader > Warranty still there as you can restore the device to it's exactly original state...
The problem is AFAIK, there's still no way to root without unlocking the bootloader first...
When you unlock the bootloader it states that if they have to reload the original software to fix they will charge you, sounds to me like an actual hardware fault would be covered, we dont know until someone returns an unlocked device under warranty and reports back tho

Well i would assume that a water resistant phone, which is resistant enough to be fully submerged, would be covered under warranty for water damage, but nope not with sony.

Your flair seems pretty relevant to this thread. How is it with Sony? And do you have examples why the directive won't save you with Samsung or HTC?
the water proof thing has been covered before and I have no problem about the water damage and no warranty. I do not see why this is a problem for some as its only fair that if the door or seal is broken it will lose that water proof magic.
i guess the question is, since there is no ta drm backup yet for the z2, would sony really care if you rooted/ unrooted since there is no clear 'this voids warranty' and still floats around the 'maybe'

Ah but what if your phone arrived with a badly manufactured door, until it was submerged you wouldnt know that the door was faulty (well you might, depends how badly manufactured) by which time, too late no warranty. I dont think it should be a full warranty for water damage but maybe like 3 months or something.
And back to the main point why is it so difficult to understand that rooting a phone (or to be more specific: Unnofficialy altering/modifying the firmware of an electrical product) will void warranty?
You want a clear answer about the z2's warranty, go to sonys website, support, start a live chat and ask exactly what will be affected by unlocking the bootloader...... they wont tell you, and they will tell you that the reason they wont tell you is because it voids warranty. Try it, after half an hour on there live chat i ended by asking the person if they thought it strange that sony provide a bootloader that can be unlocked, clear instructions on how to unlock, but cant tell you anything about what happens if you follow there instructions.... apart from that you'll have no warranty
A bit of a resurrection post but z2 rooted, it overheated and well decided to turn off and never turn back on. Sony have had the phone for a day and replaced it under warranty reporting hardware fault. They have also taken 4hours to test my new replacement phone in water etc at the service centre.
I am not too sure how it stands if the phone booted etc

Does unlocking bootloader/rooting N9 void warranty?

I was told Nexus devices warranties aren't voided, is this true? Just not 100% if I want to keep my N9 but I wanna root it to see if it can satisfy what I need it for

When u unlock your bootloader .. its says it "may" void warranty. Undortuantley i am unsure of what that "may" means. But as far as i know unlocking bootloader wont void your warranty. But correct me if im wrong.
It's a nexus, no warranty void when unlocking/locking rooting/unrooting.
This is how nexus worked since the beginning.
If they change this, nexus would sell probably not at all anymore because it would be like every other tablet/phone beside the stock android.
So no, no warranty void. Period
HTC's documentation in the box makes it clear that unlocking voids the warranty. It looks like a blanket policy, but there's no other info to the contrary.

I just unlocked and rooted mine. I'm feeling underwhelmed for $400 though, and I'm considering a return under Googles:

I doubt there's different warranty information in a mass produced box, regardless of where you ordered. But if you have it in writing, you're safe. I expect most people here aren't too worried about their warranty, but I prefer to know the actual policy rather than hope for the best.

Basically the same as me. I paid $608 AUD for my black 32gb one and I just feel like its probably not worth it...
You can always relock the BL with fastboot OEM lock and like magic it's locked again

After locking mine again (for warranty return), it flashes "This is a development device not intended for production use" in red letters at the top of the screen during boot... I guess I'm about to find out if it voids the warranty.

Yep, that's exactly what I just did. Thanks! I did a little more searching and found a few others making that suggestion. I followed this process for a manual flash (after the flash-all script failed), then `fastboot oem lock` before rebooting. I no longer see the "development device" message!

No problem, its a Nexus so there is always a way to fix it by flashing.

Hello guys just got the phone today. Was wondering if by installing a custom ROM, is warranty void?

Are you sure? Isn't it a bit more complicated?
1. It depends on the country
2. There exists the guarantee and the warranty, there are different conditions
Example 1: USB port breaks mechanically although handled with care. In most countries this is a damage which was caused by manufacturing. The room does not matter.
Example 2: Some ROM mismatches devices. The touchscreen does not work anymore because the voltage was to high, caused by the software. This is clearly a damage which is not covered by warranty, at least for me.
The second example is a bit fictional, but if you tried to root Galaxy S3 and accidentally used the Galaxy Note root files, touch screen was damaged. There were some users having this problem.
The answer may be correct in most cases and most countries, but I am sure it is too general.
Just take some reasonable risk, but don't blindly put anything on your mobile. For more detailed answers you need a lawyer, depending on the case.

I'm confused. Talking in the Indian context, will my warranty be considered "void" if I unlock the bootloader? If that is the case, will I get the "void" warranty back by simply flashing the stock ROM? Also, will that lock the bootloader and reset the flashing counter (if there is such a thing on this phone)?
