Internet Data Speeds - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What APN is everyone using? The max speed I have seen on my galaxy s III is around 6mbps....never faster. I am currently using the "pta" apn for LTE devices (my other device is a galaxy note LTE).
Which apn should I be using to achieve the fastest speeds?
I have seen speeds go up to 9mbps on HSPA+ with my old galaxy nexus before, but I have never seen that with this device at the same exact location.
Is something preventing this phone from getting hspa+ speeds?

I would guess we are all using different APN as many many different networks in the world .

Oops....my bad. I forgot to state that this is for AT&T in the US

Just measured 14 Mbit per sec with galaxy s 3 in Finland using hspa+ connection. Cannot say about lte though. Quite irrelevant comment though

What version you are using ... If you are using international model then the speeds you are getting is good and you will not get LTE. If you are using ATT LTE version then you are in the wrong forum, there's a separate forum for US variants.

I'm using the international version....the speeds still seem pretty slow compared to when I had my galaxy nexus that got 9mbps+ on hspa+....I get no where close to that now....

I get about 4-6mbps on my international GS3 on AT&T. One positive for me is the speeds seem to be more consistent than my GS2 in the same area.

I get about 5-6mbs in the UK using the stock settings.

Generally in states and Canada you'll see slower 3g speeds on average compared to nam version and gn. The reason some speculate is because nam version and possibly gn as well support hspa rev8 as opposed to international only up to hspa rev6.
In real life that translates on average speed in my city of 3-6 mps with i9300 although sometimes I can reach 12 mps at certain locations and time of day.
My i747m gives me average 8-11 mps in GTA and sometimes I can reach 14 mps.
Using Fido on Rogers network both on ltemobile.apn.
They both show same or very simmilar asu level holding them side by side when testing.
North American model is also quicker to reach max speed and stay there when testing, while international kinda ease itself staring from 1 mps then gradually half way into test reaching maximum.
This also translates into tethering speed limits when hooking one to another or using laptop.
Note all this is about hspa 3g and not about lte since my provider does not have lte yet and my sim card is 3g.

+3mbps on an EXCELLENT day, otherwise, it'll be around ~2mbps here in SoCal.

I've gotten about 9mb/s on H+ with Vodafone ireland

That should actually not happen... Fast dormancy is supposed to only kick in after some idle time.
At least that's what it does to my knowledge and what I've been able to piece together abut the functionality.
However I can confirm... on DXLF3 with FD I get 1.8Mbit/s Downstream while actually hitting 8Mbit/s with FastDormancy disabled.
I've confirmed the test several times in exactly the same location, always same result.
Well, seems that JuiceDefender's auto-toggle 2G/3G is finally gonna really pay of if Fast Dormancy is disabled

What modem works best with AT&T? Also see a lot about csc. Does that matter on AT&T?

Hmm I just found something
very interesting.
Whenever the phone changes antenna or drops to 2G, upon restore of the HSPA+ connction I only get the same meagre 1.8 Mbit/s.
Rebooting the phone or toggling airplane mode will bring it back to 8 Mbit/s until the next time it changes.
From the behaviour it looks as if the phone could not go above the first hspa-stage when it's not a new connection. I'll try different modems tomorrow but I guess that's a software bug.
Additionally, altough I've disabled fd through the app and confirmed it being disabled in the database, the phone keeps going to RRC-State "idle" which is fast dormancy.
Interestingly enough my carrier is not even listed in the list sinc I'm on a custom rom.
Anybody knows a fix to either of both issues?
Especially the first is rather annoying.

I am on Fido in Canada. This is usually the speed I get.

locking HSPA+
to all!
i just want to ask before on gingerbread phones we can setup the internet by going to this settings *#301279# and *#279301#
now on our gs3 this option is gone... do anybody have an idea how to lock HSPA+ on gs3???
thanks in advance!

What do you mean "lock"? The phone will automatically select the highest possible transfer speed in active usage and may fallback to a slower one during Idle to preserve power.

Hmmm like before on my sg1 and galaxy w... also on my daughter's ace when i type on the phone dialer *#301279# there is an option to disabke hsupa and leave hsdpa open. And never have i seen the 3g logo on the location where im at before. Now on our sg3 i cant seem to access that switch anymore. So that's why im asking if there is an alternative code or a rom taht would give me that option.
Thanks for the feedback though

[Q] North Americans owners - HSPA+ speeds

Hello everyone,
following a thread I made in general regarding canadian owners, I have a specific question about HSPA+ speed you guys are getting on the UK model. Most people that posted in the thread were saying that they were not getting adequate speeds, a lot lower than what would be expected from an HSPA+ network.
Can people run a quick speed test running on HSPA+ and post the down and up results below please? I am on the verge on getting one from handtech but I need to know that I will be getting the speeds I am expecting (between 7.5 to 10 mbps down).
Please post location, signal strength and down/up speeds
thank you very much
This is what I got on AT&T with 4 bars in H+ (I'm in VA):
To DC:
Ping: 162ms
Down: 2163kbps
Up: 1088kbps
To VA:
Ping: 291ms
Down: 2545kbps
Up: 705kbps
To GA:
Ping: 141ms
Down: 2605kbps
Up: 1125kbps
To TX:
Ping: 312ms
Down: 1989kbps
Up: 1124kbpsz
that sounds terrible, thats not HSPA+, my old iphone 3g performs better than that!
What the hell is wrong, im really wondering if it's the phone or the network at this point...
I'm pretty sure it's the network. The Atrix, as well as the iPhone 4, I had before gave similar numbers. AT&T is still in the process of installing their "4G" network.
Took a speedtest the other day and got this. About the same speed my wife is getting on her Atrix.

Agree with ph00ny, if you do back to back runs, you'll invariably get different results. I just know for me in Austin, my SGS never went above 5 mbps, so to see 7~8 mbps results is positive.
This is down to the network and the capacity of the mast you are connected to, not the phone.
For instance one mast gave me 3.57/1.2, another 1.2/1.
However if your phone/dongle is only 7.2/2Mbps spec then obviously you won't get more than that etc.
Yeah, and in my area I think I'm right on the edge of an HSPA+ area, since my phone switches between H+ and 3G quite regularly. I'm sure if I was in an area with better HSPA+ reception my numbers would be better...but it does what I need it to do.

Difference between 3G and HSPA is usually a software update, when you connect, switching between them is normal.
T-Mobile in the UK restricts HSPA to contract only customers.

[Q] Best ATT Radio for Straight Talk?

I'm using CM7 (Neutrino's 2.8) and just switched from AT&T to straight talk to save half on my bill. Just curious if there are other straight talk users running CM7 and which radios you have used that provide the fastest data speeds?

You can only guess, based on your test result, time of day and signal strength. Another useful measure is latency (ms). This gives a hint on the robustness and or congestion of the connection. Sub 100 ms is excellent. 500 ms and above is very poor.

I'm also interested in different radios for use with straight talk.
I'm using neutrino as well and have been getting horrible (IMO) speeds. Maybe its just because I am not getting H+ (hspa+) speeds on straight talk? I currently only get regular H (hspa). Do you have the same problem?

My Atrix came with the .30 radio. I've had no trouble with that radio but couldn't resist upgrading to .37. I really saw no real difference in my area, but as someone pointed out earlier it may be your area. I've read users upgrading like I did and it made a huge difference. I also read that users had better results using the .36 radio instead of .37. Your just going to have to experiment. By the way I'm on straight talk and using the Top Smart ROM.

I don't think you'll ever see the +. 3g is umts, H is hspa (that's hsdpa and hsupa) , the + comes in when the back haul (connection from tower to mother ship) has high capacity, eg from 1 x t1 (1544 mbps) vs n x t1 ( n x 1544 mbps). I could be wrong though. But I can tell you that hspa is capable of speeds that you would not have believed possible (fact). I'll run some tests and see if I can clarify further. Hope this helps.

My wife and I both have the Atrix 4g on Straight Talk. I'm not allowed to touch her phone so it's stock. She does get H+ and at times it's actually faster than my DSL. Upgrading to cable this week, but anyway yeah H+ with the Atrix on Straight Talk is real... at least that's what her phone says.
I did do 3 speed tests. 1st was 1523 down and 915 up, 2nd was 953 down and 121 up and 3rd was 2157 down and 1088 up. All done at my desk within 4 minutes so it varies.

The numbers are what it is all about and thanks for posting. And I do need to research the + piece and where does this elusive + come in. Judging by those numbers, the connection from the tower back to the home base aka "the internet" isn't worth writing home about. That's a single t1. If you were posting 4000+ download then that would that would be another conversation. But, that said, hspa is capable of far higher speeds, but the back haul has to be in place. The number that makes the biggest difference, believe it or not, is latency. Anything less that 250ms is great. If you are getting 700ms+ then you'll "feel" it in responsiveness. I'd take 100 ms at 1000kbps compared to 700ms at 4000kbps any day of the week.
Example below:
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk 2
Where I live in the sticks, I get 4g from the tower in the next county, but if I go into town (only a two stoplight town) the tower there is only capable of 2g. Yeah not even 3g, just one big E in my status bar. So I'm happy with the numbers I get at home even tho I mainly use Wi-Fi when home.

Slow LTE speeds

I have been getting really slow data speeds in the Los Angeles area. I used to have the Galaxy S2 (i777) and it had decent speeds (usually 2-3 Mbps and sometimes up to almost 11). When I upgraded to this phone, I was hoping to get around 5 or 6 Mbps but I get this instead.

I am on the 2gb data plan and it says I have 1.9 left. I rarely use At&t data since I am connected to WiFi 80-90% of the time.
Speeds are faster early in the morning or later in the day around afternoon and also night time. It's just really slow during the day. I guess the network is just congested but it was never this bad when I was on my old phone.
Make sure you are connected to the closest server in the server list, sometimes it messes up and gives you one thousands of miles away, which result in low speeds.

I think you may want to check apn or call att. That might resolve your issue
I had to do that twice in one year due to some technical beef my phone did not register with their servers after resetting.
Portland oregon
around most of Dallas I get 12-20Meg ... in some places 30-40Meg+
the only time I got terrible speed was when I tried using the LTE toggle. but that was easily fixed.
I hate you guys, such fast speeds.
I shot AT&T an email and this was their response.... not sure if it is true or if it is just the normal reply they give when people ask about data speeds.
"Thank you for contacting AT&T about your wireless service. I will be
more than happy to assist you with your inquiry regarding your data
speeds today.
I'm sorry to hear of your data speed issues on the new LTE network, and
am glad to look into that for you. I do see several tower issues being
worked on in your area, which started a couple of weeks ago. They are
planned to be resolved by 12/30/2012. There are also planned upgrades to
the existing towers there too. I have now sent in a network quality
report to our engineers to make them aware of the impacts this is
having. They do use these reports in network planning also.
If you have any additional questions about this issue, please respond to
this email. Thank you for choosing AT&T; we appreciate your business."
Ask them if your data plan is compatible. The Bestbuy website, when I ordered, said that I must upgrade from my 2GB 4G data plan to the 3GB LTE data plan. There was no getting around it. Maybe you have to have the 3GB data plan to use LTE. Although it does look like your connected just fine.

AWS availability, LTE speedtest

As many of you already know, Note 3 is one of a few Verizon smartphones that has a Category 4 LTE modem, capable of delivering 150Mbps download speeds. Verizon's been rolling out new LTE layer on AWS or Band 4, and in many cities like NYC, LA, SF, Chicago, Atlanta, Detroit, Miami, to name a few users have been seeing speeds just under 100Mbps, but only using Category 3 devices like GS4, iPhone 5s, etc which are hardware limited at 100Mbps.
Since this is a Note 3 forum, it would be great to have this thread for reports on Verizon's Band 4 LTE, and especially Speedtest.net results which should be north of 100Mbps!
Similar thread exists in GS4 forums: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2502716
And a much more in depth one over at HoFo: http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...ent-and-Verizon-sites-with-Remote-Radio-Units
This article also talked about Verizon's 2x20Mhz AWS LTE: http://gigaom.com/2013/10/14/watch-out-att-verizons-new-lte-network-monster-stirs-in-nyc/
On Galaxy phones it should be easy to access ServiceMode via dial codes, which will allow you to monitor the Band you're connected to, and even force the certain frequency. I don't own Note 3, but afaik Verizon usually tries to block out these codes, although there used to be an app in Play Store that would dial the codes for you (Samsung ServiceMode or Sammy codes)
*#0011# General Debug screen
*#2263# Allows you to force any frequency on your phone
*#27663368378# Main screen
There are a few other codes, please post your findings!
That's pretty neat. Thanks for the info!
I wonder what this'll mean for Verizon customers currently grandfathered into the unlimited 4G LTE data plans and if there's any plans of discontinuing that service.
I'll have to check this out once I head back to the city.

Unlimited users still get to access this LTE channel with capable device like Note 3.
This is what users are seeing on GS4, but remember GS4 is capable of only 100Mbps on the downlink, so that's the limiting factor. Note 3 can push 150Mbps!
I have read conflicting reports, pretty sure its still disabled on our firmware. One guy said he tried in his AWS enabled area and it wasnt recieving it, still same speed as MI9 and others thought they might since they were seeing speeds of like 60 down.
I'm not in one of those areas and lucky to see 30 down on a good day, so I can't tell you definitively either way.

Have you tried the Play Store apps to get into ServiceMode?
There are a few of them, I use this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.amoopa.sammysmode&hl=en
There seems to be a similar free one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kabasoft.util.servicemodeshortcut&hl=en
*#0011# General Debug screen
*#2263# Allows you to force any frequency on your phone
*#197328640# Main screen
Out of those 3 codes only *#0011# General Debug screen worked for me. Hmm are there any other additional steps I have to take to be able to access those other codes?

No, as I said I dont live in a AWS area.

I've confirmed it twice that it's not in the update, as we have both Tmo and VZ LTE in Band 4 here. VZ speeds stayed the same post update and my TMO Sim will only go to H+ vs my VZ-GS4 which goes up to LTE on the TMO SIM.

Ok, so you're looking at the first line where it says LTE Band. Band 13 is the original LTE layer in 700Mhz spectrum.
PLMN: 311-480 is the country/network code, unique to Verizon Wireless.
Bandwidth is the amount of spectrum they're using. Band 13 is 10Mhz nationwide, capable of 73.6Mbps peak speeds. Their Band 4 is in many markets 20Mhz capable of 150Mbps peak speeds!
RSRP is "reference signal receive power" -44dBm being amazing, and -140dBm you're about to drop connection.
SNR is "signal to noise ratio" the higher the better. 30dB is perfect.
RSRQ is "reference signal receive quality" -3dBm being amazing and -19dBm terrible.
PA state displays the new envelope tracking (ET) feature only Note 3 has, it saves battery and should improve upload, etc....
You really should be watching the first line and try to spot "BAND 4" and the third line showing you the BW (bandwidth). Should be between 10Mhz and 20Mhz depending on the market. Please state your market when you post screenshots, it will really help me figure out which areas are getting this massive capacity!
Hope this helps!
So do you know why I can't access those codes?
*#2263# Allows you to force any frequency on your phone
*#197328640# Main screen
I really wanna try to enable that band 4 option

Ever since HTC Thunderbolt which had a similar ServiceMenu, Verizon got paranoid about giving users too much low level control, and started requesting OEMs to block these codes from the final shipping ROMs. T-Mobile variant for instance has all of the ServiceMode pages enabled. So the ServiceMode.apk is still there, but it isn't listening dialer any more. You can try those apps I've posted above, they should get you to the service mode.
There is also *#27663368378# Which is the actual root of the app. Also, certain ROMs enable this. It's really enabling it in the build.prop. ServiceMode is baked into the TW framework, so ROM must be TW based.

None if these codes are doing anything for me on beans rom. Type em in and all it does is dial.

Can anyone else with the Verizon Developer Edition of the Note 3 utilize any of these apps? Both say they're unsupported on my device.

Im trying to do that 2766 long string that ends with the pound nothings happening am I supposed to hit something after that dialer just tries to make a call no menu comes up
** just tried the service mode shortcut app 2nd link doesnt work says not supported when you click it in the app
Well I just tried to buy the app from the 1st link and it says my Note 3 isnt supported and wont let me download it. Howd you get into the menu? The apk for servicemode is showing in Titanium and not frozen dont know why it wont open

Ah finally! After the reboot, do you have Band 4 ENABLED? Did it stick? Which ROM are you on and what metro area are you in?
Not all areas have Band 4 enabled. NYC, LA, SF, Chicago, Atlanta, Miami, but also Lexington, KY, etc... Try testing it in the busiest parts of your city, since Verizon is deploying there first, to alleviate the congestion.
Hi Milan, nice seeing you here, read a lot of your posts over at HoFo and S4GRU.
YES!!! AWS live in Philadelphia!!! I have kept up with the HoFo thread and haven't heard of any sighting in Philly yet.
What I did was first enabled B4 like above and then went into UE setting, settings, protocol, NAS, network control, band selection, and under LTE preference chose B4 to force it. Interesting enough there is no B13 option in there.
I have screenshots of service mode, was speed test, and b13 speed test. Too bad signal on AWS sucks so I can't really use it. I guess this is because Verizon had the lowest number of towers here. My speed test is quite poor but compared to B13 in Philly, otherwise known as the slowest network in Philly other than Verizon CDMA, pretty much anything is improvement.

Hey this is awesome news!!! Congrats! They seem to be running another 10Mhz FDD LTE in the AWS. EARFCN value of 2100 corresponds to B block AWS license they've acquired from SpectrumCo cable companies! So you should be having another 73.6Mbps channel which should alleviate the congestion!
Have you tried testing in a busy areas of Philly during the Off-Peak hours just to see if the capacity is there? Don't forget to put Network Selection back to "Automatic", otherwise you won't be receiving any calls, just LTE Data
Thank you for posting a short guide on how to properly enable B4 on Note 3!
Again how are you guys even getting into the service mode? Both of those apps and none of the codes seem to work what am I doing wrong here?

Question 5G support in the USA XQ-CT72

Has anyone been able to get 5G support in the USA with Xperia 1 lV XQ-CT72 ?
I have tried T-Mobile and also AT&T on mine and the best I can do is "LTE+" on T-Mobile
On AT&T it says only LTE, yet I am getting the same DL speeds as I did wit T-Mobile around 84mb

Check if you have NR selected in Sim Mode
That is 5G, on Reddit people have tried it and they say it's working
Also check you have the SIM card in Primary slot

Thanks again I was able to figure it out on my own here In the USA my Xperia now shows 5G with AT&T I’m not sure if I am actually getting 5G speeds though
With a good connection what should my DL speeds be approximately?
Lastly I assume when the US variant starts shipping here in the States it will probably not support Wi-Fi calling either
Hard to tell really, depends on a type of network, congestion, signal quality.........and server speed on the other side.
Its clear to me that with the international version of this phone in the USA you don't get 5g speed
I did a test I ran SpeedTest using the same SIM card. One on my iPhone and got over 150mp transfer, I then put there same SIM card in my Xperia 1 IV device and even though it shows "5G"Service I am getting half the speed approximately 70mp download. So it's still running in LTE mode... Vert frustrating
But that doesn't tell that it's LTE. 5G can be worse then LTE. Unless you can lock on a specific cell on a certain tower and do proper testing which can also give veeeery different results, it's hard to tell what you are actually using. There are some apps that kinda tell you network info but it is not the same as proper testing app with all the details and ability to lock on to a specific cell. Been doing that with Huawei equipment recently and......well, very time consuming process and very frustrating vhen the same phone on the same spot can lock on some frequency but can't on another for the same technology on the same tower. And speed was anything from 50-500 MB, depends whether it was low band or high band and 735347 factors. And repeating the test right after can produce very different results.
Unless you try that 20 times with each phone on the same spot and preferably in hours of lower congestion and then have some consistency in results that xperia is always twice slower it might be just coincidence.

I live in a rural area where there is only one tower. I did the test one after another. First with the iPhone using Speed Test from Ookia and then pulled the SIM card out and put it in the Xperia, using the same app on the Xperia I experienced much slower speeds and I did run the test multiple times.
I am in Australia, before this trick I got a maximum of 200mbs after figuring this out I am getting 300 - 800mb so it seems it's working on my end
have too be careful what actually being displayed for 5G service icon , I have found on the XQ-CT72 it will show 5g icon, but with LTE dicovery app, it shows its only connected to 2 different LTE bands, the download speeds are horrible like 10mbps, with the USA model pixel 6 pro it shows 5g and LTE App shows its connected to 5G NSA71 which is the true "5g" band and download speeds are 75-100 mbps, so I returned my 1 IV and see what happens with the USA model after it been out a while., then maybe I`ll buy that one, until now pixel 6 pro for now.

Are folks checking if 5G is ACTUALLY being broadcast in their areas? Just because we see advertising on TV for 5g or a phone has 5g capability (have to check bands but some versions of this phone do have the 5g bands for the US) or a phone displays 5g in status bar (lol) but in reality is getting 4g (aka LTE). Even all typical LTE bands are not all broadcast in any given area e.g in my area Tmobile has 4 and 2 but nothing else and AT&T has 2 and 17 and nothing else. Too many times I see people endlessly discussing these 4g/5G issues without looking at the actual towers and what they are sending out in their respective areas.

You have to also check what bands are actually being broadcast by the towers in your area of usage. Further the carriers go loose with the way what they call 5g (marketing). Also bands like 66 extended LTE is just seen in a couple of spots in a general large area like 30 x 30 sq miles where I am. At least that is what I have seen.
