Still doing it months later wtf

You don't have an app installed called more bars do you? That app automatically enters airplane mode during low signal to conserve battery.

HTC One
So I'm having this problem as well, on my new HTC One... it goes into airplane mode nearly every call I have... I'll probably have to go back to my iPhone if I can't resolve the issue. As stupid as it sounds, I'm fairly confident it's my ear touching the screen that's "navigating" into settings and turning airplane mode on... if I'm 100% concentrating on not touching the phone's screen at all, I don't have the problem. But if I'm talking normally, it never fails, the call drops, I look at the phone, and I'm sitting on the settings page with airplane mode on. I honestly don't know how this doesn't happen to everyone... I *THINK* my ears are normal!? Anyone come up with a solution??

Is your proximity sensor working fine? Is it covered with a screen protector?

Thanks... I installed the sensor app... seems to be working ok... it's showing "all or nothing" (9cm or 0cm) and seems to indicate the duration I hold the phone to my head. If I move my head around (not necessarily away from the phone) it indicates that the sensor thought I wasn't in proximity the full time... so perhaps there are brief moments the OS thinks I've pulled the phone away from my head. Maybe that algorithm needs tweaking (e.g. maybe wait 1-2 seconds of nothing in proximity before turning on screen?).
I don't have a screen protector.

found this on the htc one forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2259526
I didn't read it, but it looks like you are not the only one having issues with the proximity sensor...

So I know this doesn't help much but wanted to add I'm having this issue as well. Not every call but maybe every couple of days or so. Does seem to happen when I'm using the phone, not an ear piece, and I'm moving around a lot. So might be something with the proximity sensor, though there is not quick button I could be hitting with my face to turn airplane mode on even if the screen was on. I have also noticed a lot of strange network issues where my single bounces between 4g, 3g and hsdpa often, which I've never had a phone do this much before. I can actually sit there and watch flip back and forth. So I'm really thinking the HCT One has some manufacture issues that are not being addressed. I'm about ready to send this thing in.

Screen Lock Problem

I did search for this issue, but didn't find anything that matched my issue.
I have the latest Mighty Rom for Touch Pro. It's been working beautifully until recently. I usually keep my phone in my pocket with the screen turned off (locked). I've noticed lately that the screen keeps turning on without any interaction. I've gone through configurations to turn off screen blink for notifications and it still keeps coming on. This is driving me nuts, as it's draining my battery much more than it would if the screen would just stay off until I turned it on.
Any suggestions?

Do you have BT on? It could be that it is waking up because of communication between the device and a BT device.
Also will wake up when switching radio antennas. Maybe you are in a low coverage zone?
Wish I saw this thread before I posted this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=682649
Sorry about that.
I have the exact problem. But I've had it with multiple ROMs, and even the stock Sprint ROM (original, and even after the firmware update). I've been suffering with this "wake up" for well over a year now. Pissing me off.
To answer the questions above:
No, I do not have bluetooth on.
I have a strong 3-bar signal at all times (3 bars under WM 6.5). The ANT is less than 500 feet from me, up on a water tower. My phone even has a clear line-of-sight to the ANT!!!
I have same isue!!!
Same exact issue, it's been going on since the day I bought the phone, when it came out. I gave up on trying to fix it

[Q] Proximity Sensor during phone call

During a phone call, my proximity sensor doesnt seem to be sensitive enough. The screen turns off when I hold it to my ear, but when I pull away to look at the screen and interact with it, the screen either doesnt turn on or it will flash on and off again repeatedly. It seems that the phone cant detect that it is not near my head any more and should turn the screen back on.
Generally it wouldnt be a big deal since the screen does turn off when its held near my head, but when I needed to use the dial pad for a menu prompt it got really frustrating when trying to press in numbers with the screen switching on and off. (I just called Verizon CS recently and navigating through the menu was a pain with this screen going on and off).
I'm coming from the Samsung Charge which was very responsive: when you pulled the phone away from your head, the screen instantly turns on for you to press in keys or hang up. With the Rezound, it doesnt turn on most of the time and I have to press the power button (which will turn it on and then automatically off again...). The problem is alleviated if I'm in a very bright place (direct sunlight) so my guess is that the proximity sensor may not be sensitive enough to detect the difference between darkness and low lighting conditions. I'm sitting in a room with a 26W CFL lamp (so not too dark) and the Rezound has trouble turning the screen back on during a call when I pull the phone away from my ear.
Was wondering if anyone else exhibit this condition or if its just specific to my device (in which case I'll have to give Verizon a ring to get another replacement)?
I'm having the opposite problem. It unlocks itself a lot up against my head. My thunderbolt did this so bad I got a replacement thinking it was a defective proximity sensor. But it wasn't and I got in the habit of manually locking the screen on calls. But now my rezound does it but not as bad. I think htc sucks with proximity sensors cuz auto brightness is never programmed properly. It doesn't go dark enough compared to Samsung and motorola phones with auto brightness on. It only has about 3 brightness levels like in the HTC brightness widget, whereas stock Android has 5.

I'm having the same problem. The sensor would force the phone screen off as soon as I make a phone call. The verizon rep had me hard-reset while I was on the phone with her. The same symptom arises after the hard reset and the phone is brand-new.
I had to reset to get her to send me another rezound replacement.
On this replacement, however, I'm having the same issue again. My gf's rezound doesn't seem to have the issue.
I'm having a second replacement sent now. This is pretty annoying.
The interesting thing is the issue comes and goes. One day the sensor wouldn't respond, and other days it works fine. Although I would say that the issue deteriorates over time and never improves.

[Q] anyone else notice!!??

has anyone else noticed that when you answer a phone call the screen turns off ...I hate it ...I have to hit the power button to wake the phone up and end the call .. does anyone have a fix for this ? thanks in advance
thats how all phones have been
is this your first smart phone bro?
if u dont cover the sensor it wont shut off
The screen should only turn off when you put it to your face . Once you pull away the phone the screen should wake . Check your settings you shouldn't have to use the power to wake it .

Yea I noticed the same thing. During a call pulled phone away from my face and screen stayed off. I thought something was wrong but if the call is active screen will come back on, if person hangs up and ur not quick to uncover sensor the screen stays off.
do you guys have screen protectors on your phones??? zaggs perhaps??
If anything is "blocking" your sensor, then it assumes that your face is up to the phone. The phone would then only wake up when the call is ended or the power button is pressed.
You must not have ANYTHING covering the sensor
I would say that this is most likely the case
Mine doesnt do that unless I put the phone up to my ear. Normally I just answer the phone and click it to speaker. When I do that the screen stays on....unless my hand/finger happens to be covering the light sensor.
I have Invisible Shield HD. And there's a cutout for the prox. sensor. Have the same problem. Hopefully HTC will fix it on the next firmware update

I'm not so sure about that. My OG Evo has a standard screen protector that "covers" the sensors, and they still work just fine. Maybe those crappy Zagg orange peels will interfere, but I still don't see that being too likely, as they're not really blocking any light.
I have this issue as well and after reading all over for the past two days it appears some units have this issue and some don't. Further complicating the issue is the fact some have screen protectors and some don't. Some have made cutouts on their screen protector and then it works as it should. Very weird.
As soon as I make a call the phone screen goes black while laying on my desk. When the call is over sometimes I can hit the power button to disconnect the call...sometimes I have to hold the power button down 10 seconds to soft reset the phone or I cannot get back to any screen and the call stays connected. Very weird. I got my phone at BB so I am going to stop back and see if they have had any returns and what their thoughts are.

Yeah I wish that was my issue....I don't have a screen protector on my phone and it doesn't work as designed.

I bought a Zagg and had the issue. They left a hole for a sensor but I think that's the light sensor with the proximity sensor being just to the left and covered. It's a small red light that turns on when making a call. So I made the hole bigger by making it a rectangle uncovering the proximity sensor. Now my phone goes on and off like it should when putting it to my ear. Maybe that'll help some of you? Though I have read some people having the issue without screen protectors.

Not sure if this will help or not, but in settings/accessibility settings there is an option to end calls using the power button. Might help.
OK, this is a bit OT so I apologize. But I can't figure it out and really dont feel it warrants a new thread. I hope you dont mind me dropping this in here.
Yesterday, at some point, this icon came into my notification bar and i CANNOT, for the life of me figure out what it is.
It looks kinda like a hearing aid or Bluetooth headset icon. But I use neither. I've looked all thru settings trying to figure it out. Checked thru accessibility . Just stumping me, and making me feel REALLY stupid.
Much thanks to anyone who knows.

I experienced the same issue with the screen turning off as soon as I placed a call. I pulled the Zagg HD off and the issue was resolved. I'm going to best buy today to exchange the Zagg for a new one and I will cut a little notch into it to see if it works.
After the screen goes off you have to press the power button but that little red dot next to the proximity sensor stays on unless you flash a bright light on it. I think regardless the proximity sensor is really sensitive and the Zagg HD just makes it that much more finicky.
Being in a dimly lit area makes it worse too.
**Update**
I went to bestbuy and exchanged my Zagg HD for a new one. I got home notched the cutout for the sensor a little more. Installed it and now I don't have any issues with the screen turning off.

[Q] note 2 major problems

I have had my Verizon Note 2 for about a month now, and about 2 days ago i read that the processor has Vulnerabilities and mailware problems samusing is trying to fix but about a week ago i went to use my quick glance and my direct call and it wasnt working and when someone calls me i put it up to my ear the screen goes black as it should but then its stuck at the black screen i hit all the buttons cant get to the phone call if i wanted to put it on speaker or even just check a txt message i cant do anything until that person hangs up. The only way i am able to check my txt messages and stuff while on the phone is if i dont put it up to my ear.. so i restarted phone as we all would assume this would fix it well it didnt, so then i did a Factory reset thinking that would just put it back to complete stock and fix it well turns out that didnt work. My phone has never been rooted or anything and never will be. Im running Android 4.1.1 If anyone has any idea how i can fix this it would be gladly appreciated i love the motion features. Also i did the Gyroscope calibration and it didn't make any difference, my proximity sensor is on and glowing red just doesnt work like i said.
Thanks, Stephen

That exploit that you are referring to has nothing to do with your issue... And the proximity sensor does not light up as that is the LED notification light. I have this issue from time to time too and it's just that the sensor is not doing it's job properly but if you just simply hit the home button or power button real quick the screen will turn on. Other than that you may want to check some of your settings... Turn off your "motion" settings and see if that takes care of your issue then find out which one is causing the problem...
The quick glance used to work without any problems at all and i liked that, then all of a sudden one day it just decides not to work and it hasn't worked in a week now, i turned my motion off and when im in a phone call it still locked up at the phone screen i cant do anything until they hang up ive gone through the settings multiple times and nothing, i think imma go to verizon today and ***** about it

actually the proximity sensor DOES light up, it's a very faint red light and it's the left one of the two little holes to the _right_ of the phone speaker, the notification LED is on the left of the phone speaker. This light turns on when in a phone call to indicate that the sensor has been activated.

Super Deep Sleep?

My phone's always-on display will turn off. I can't bring it out of it's 'slumber' anyway other than plugging it in. It instantly pops out of sleep and works fine. I'll lock it and while I can see the always-on display the fingerprint reader will unlock it with no problems. This just started in the past hour for me. I've tried resetting the phone and the issue still pops up, and quickly at that.
Are you using a case or screen protector? Could be something interfering with the ambient light or proximity sensor causing the phone to think it's in your pocket at all times?
Edit:
Actually just tested this. Covered the top sensors and the always on display turned off and fingerprint sensor no longer worked just like you described

You may be right about that. I'm using a lifeproof case and I had just opened it up to clean off the inside (I had shown someone the phone earlier and dog hair found its way to the inside of the case). Funny thing is I turned it completely off and let it sit for a time, as opposed to the restart I did earlier, and it's working alright now. Maybe I just needed to reset it's calibration by resetting it?
Anyone know how to disable this weird dependence on the light sensor? I just don't understand why it would ever disable itself because it's dark.

I read this is a feature of the phone. The always on will turn off in your pocket or in a darkened room. Nice idea since you do not need to be using the juice then. You can test this in a dimmly lit room by cupping your hands over the display to block the light.

Sure, but it won't turn on even when I press the back button. Pretty obnoxious when I'm sitting in a blacked out room and I have to hold it up to the computer screen to activate it.
Yeah, I'm sorry I didn't read the thread carefully. That sucks. I'm in a dark room now watching video. The display turned off, I heard a notification, when I picked up the phone it came on. I do not like that that the led notifications stop. I'm not sure what happens to sound notifications when the always on goes off. I prefer to set the phone silent until a certain time in the AM and then use a sound profile to get notifications and a low volume.

I'm thinking it was the Lifeproof case I have on it. It all worked fine for a week then when I tested the case for waterproof it failed (the phone wasn't in it). I sent for another one and it seems to be working alright now. Maybe it had something to do with the inside of my case getting wet? I don't know.
Great! Enjoy your phone g why are we still calling these things phone?). I like the G5. Now that we have torur I am hoping their for some nice tweaks.
I've had this happen too and it made my life proof case useless because I couldn't use my phone with it on it I still have the issue once in a while but not nearly as often anymore
