Verizon s3 trade for Gnex ? Help! - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I recently got a galaxy s3, and after rooting descovered that the bootloader was locked. I was origionally having trouble deciding between the gnex and s3. I was now wondering , is it worth trading in the s3 for the galaxy nexus that has known receotion issues ? Id love your imout , and if there is a thread already feel free to point me to that one and shut this one down , thanks!
Sent from my locked SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app, thanks verizon!

I would keep the s3

I had the same dilemma. I bought the Gnex and haven't looked back. The radios are good but not as good as my old Droid 2s.

I'm just very nourvous about the locked bootloader , granted the device has been out for only a day or two. Also what do you guys think about the hardware? The sgsIII does not seem to have that much greater specs as it is not dual core. And you have not had any terrible signal issues like I have seen online ?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app

meant to say quad core!

Do you even know how to read a spec sheet? TI OMAP 4460 vs S4 Krait? The S3 by more than a little.

See, you say that...but what happened with 4.0.3? And where's 4.1? On the Google HSPA+, but not on the carrier branded versions... I would make the jump if HSPA+ didn't suck balls where i live...

Did you ever decide on what you want to do? I have a VZW Galaxy Nexus running a Jelly Bean ROM, 3 batteries total (2 standard, 1 extended), 3 battery covers (same as batteries), spare battery charger, and an Incipio Feather case. I still have the original box, too. The only thing missing is the headset. I misplaced it at some point.

well the time has come. ill be getting a new phone friday, can't make up my mind between s3 and the q, I like both but can't decide, so I figure open a thread get some opinions from my buddies on here.....I'm on the fence big, please drop a line or two with your opinion, links, whatever advice you might have to offer.....figure this might help others who can't decide as well....thanks

I plan on getting a new phone in about 2 weeks also and the Q is not even a thought. I don't really like Samsung but I'll be getting the S3.
I recommend you stay with the Photon and not get a new one. My reasons are selfish though, because I don't want you to leave us as a dev!
Honestly though, my girlfriend has the S3 and it's amazing. I don't like how fragile it feels in comparison to the Photon, but I watched her drop it on concrete yesterday and it surprised me. It landed in the top left corner and the screen didn't shatter. It just has a couple dings and scrapes on the sides.

IMO, get the S3:
1- As far as I know is the fastest phone out there
2- Samsung has added some nice software features
3- It's about to get official JB
4- The development community is growing up day by day
5- You will support Samsung in some way after the crappy outcome of the Samsung vs Apple trial D:
Thanks for all your work spleef..we've really enjoyed having you as one of our amazing devs!
Wait for the lg eclipse quad core, 2 gigs of ram, 13 megapixel camera, and a display that rivals the retina display from apple oh and 2100mah battery stock.

the note 2 will face the same changes the sgs3 did, there is no current quad core chipsets that support LTE, the newest and greatest one to do so is the MSM8960 aka the qualcomm snapdragon S4 tahts inside the one x lineup, sgs3 lineup, and many many other phones this year
Come to the light.
S3 so far has been a great phone.

Samsung's radios are garbage. I had the Epic, have since given it to my ex-wife, and after a year, the single sucked, on all fronts. the cell signal sucked, the wifi signal sucked, and even the bluetooth was flakey. The Photon (and I got mine used, so it's probably a year old now) is 10 times better in those respects. The only thing the Sammy has that bests Moto is the Super AMOLED screen.

Not sure where to put this...but here we go.

Just as I did with previous devices I wanted to get input on questions to ask etc.

Your leak on the original Note was spot on, so I'm excited to see what you dig up, even if you don't get a chance to take pics. Plus, getting hands on this early is indicative that they're already in production, which looks like Samsung is going to go with a semi-simultaneous global launch like the gs3...good news for my buddy who is converting to android for the Note 2 from his iPhone.

Jumping ship to the Nexus

Now that there is confirmed news about the LG Nexus [Source], are you guys considering moving from the SIII to the Nexus ??
Don't get me wrong, the SIII is an awesome piece of hardware, but the lack of documentation from the Samsung Exynos team is a well known issue. That, to me, is the most important reason anyone would wanna move to the Nexus.
But I want to hear more opinions as to the advantages as well as disadvantages of the Nexus vs. the SIII.

I don't actually think theirs anything wrong with LG, of course I'd choose Samsung over them any day of the week, but if Samsung were yet to come onto the smartphone market, and LG had already made an appearance, I wouldn't be hesitate to buy an LG, providing specs etc were all up to date and the phone isn't just a single core 800mhz A5 snapdragon lol not suggesting snapdragon are bad processors....I was referring to the old A5 architecture

I just wanted to say something similar - of course it will just be outsourced to some company in Asia and will not be very competitively priced (unless you have an internal deal or something) since Google does not want to alienate any manufacturer!
That being said the openness is an interesting advantage (after the problems that I had with my S3 - which I discovered it was a patched version instead of a real IMEI unlock as I thought when I bought it).
LG left a sour taste in my mouth a few years back so I don't think I'm jumping ship, plus the specs leaked so far aren't too impressive.
However that new HTC with the 5inch 1080 screen has me interested...

My only question is if they'll have a CDMA version on Verizon. I switched to Verizon from ATT because of poor signal and lack of 3G in my area. T-Mobile is even worse. Verizon is by far the best carrier in my area. If they are only releasing a GSM version, I guess I'll be skipping this one.

No difference in specs? way better screen, twice the RAM, better camera, newer gen processor. Specs are a lot better. The kicker will be whether anyone will dev for it. Since it will be stock android, it should run great out of the box, without LG being able to jack it up.
Agreed with everything except wondering if devs will dev for it. Its a nexus so that's a guarantee.

Non-expandable storage is absolutely fatal. If it had 32gb fixed, I could deal with it, but 8gb and 16gb? Sod off. Nice specs, though. If it has a fixed battery that's also a major negative. Need to see more companies taking the maxx approach: make a thin phone, then use the space savings for a huge battery.
What are your thoughts now that we have an official announcement? For me, I wasn't planning on getting this Nexus anyway, and seeing no LTE makes me glad that I'm not in a position to get it this year.
I was heavily upset with hearing that it's currently only a GSM/HSPA+ device..... I am totally down for getting one, if they make a CDMA/LTE version but it's so not worth switching to Tmobile or AT&T... I still have unltd data on vzw
If it had options like 32 or 64 gb I could deal with the non removable battery and lack of lte if i was on tmobile or something.

buying the note 3 is like going out and buying an ip5s, your stuck with what the manufacture wants you to have
Samsung can suck a hole in a wall and leave android for all i care now days, they peaked with the note 2 and now are on the hill downwards with apple
with that said, 4.1.2 is the last stop for the i717, we are way over the 18 month period and were lucky to even get 4.1.2
the Knox security is a hell of a mess from Samsung for sure , but I still got hope that will not affect the development for this device. Maybe more time but not the end . all this mess for more money in theirs pockets ..

My mission now is to find the best functioning kitkat rom as it was meant to be buiIt for aging phones that dont have the impressive specs of a newly released flagship device. l almost got a Xperia Z1 because of my tablet Z but didnt like the bezels top and bottom, (AND NO PEN). I have an S4...but I want a note 1 as a back up. I had the Note 2 but I sold it for lots of loot. The S4 is brilliant but the locked bootloader has cramped the phone to the point of constipation as if you got a S4 on MF 4.2.2 firmware or MK 4.3 firmware the boot loader is super locked. They even killed the service menu. So Im selling my S4 for cash + the note 1 for temp use until I see what I want next. Samsung is the only phone company left with dual storage. LG has the Optimus G pro with 32GB and an SD card slot, but with the specs on that phone they will never see 4.2.2 on it.. And it's a beast of a phone...so I will take this Note 1 + $250 and call it a day until February

Do it. There is nothing better than getting a Nexus. I jumped to Nexus 4 from the Note about 10 months ago, and just upgraded to a Nexus 5. The developer support on a Nexus is amazing. I could have easily stuck with the Nexus 4 for another year, but the lack of LTE was bothering me a bit. A Nexus phone is pure gold. By the time the Note got to be the age that my Nexus 4 was at, I was tired of it. Don't give another dime to Samsung, who will spend it on rewriting perfectly good android code into buggy bloatware. Don't let the lack of sd card bother you. I have lived with 16 GB storage without any issue, and Nexus 5 comes in 32 GB too, for just $50 more.
