[Q] change notification toggles - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I may be being really dense, but I can't find an option to remove/change the toggles in the notification area... I use some (like wifi, bluetooth, brightness), but have no need for ones like power saving, sync etc.
Can anyone point me in the right direction please?
Thanks!

I'm assuming you are on stock rom, if so you cant. Custom roms like Omega have 15 toggle mod you can add or remove whatever you like.

Thanks for the answer
Yes I am currently on stock ROM - I used CM9 nightlies for ages on my S2 but didn't like them as much as the S3 stock. Maybe I'll try Omega (have recently installed the kitchen part of it anyway)
Would you say Megga is better than CM in your opinion?

It's impossible to say if a rom is better or not. I've been using AOKP roms on my galaxy S II but I can now say I like original Samsung roms more on the S III, I even use touchwiz which would've been unthinkable on the S II. I'm on Omega Rom. It's basically stock but with upgrades. Been using other roms for a few hours too because Im a flashaholic but keep Nandroid-ing back to Omega. First time Samsung did a great job on interface IMO

Well that sounds good, I'll give it a go later, thanks
Out of interest, does Omega have the ability to cancel an app by long-press of the back key? That's something I miss from CM9...

Fyi, here's how to change/remove the toggles...

No, it doesn't but as you probably know, long press home and press Task Manager let's you kill tasks.
I liked the idea of long press back key, but was never happy with the execution - I was constantly killing apps that I didn't want to by tapping back too quickly. Clearly CM wasn't checking that you were holding back, but rather that it was pressed at the start and end of a certain time period.

Thanks for the reply... I actually used it a lot with CM9 and found it very useful, but not the end of the world to not have it!

ROM Ideas

Hello Fascinate Community,
I'm new to the development scene and I'm trying to learn as much as I can about creating or modifying/altering ROMs. Specifically, I'm interested in modifying the Fascinate TouchWiz stock. Maybe I'm the only person in the world, but I kind of like the TW interface and don't care to replace it with a 3rd party launcher (I did use and like LauncherPro Plus on the Droid 1/2, just enjoying something different).
At any rate, I had some ideas that I thought would be really cool to integrate with the existing TouchWiz interface and I thought that I would share them in the event someone figures out how to incorporate them.
I also thought this might be a good way to consolidate ideas the community at large might have for upcoming ROMs, but lack the know-how to implement:
1) Similar to the control toggles in the notification bar, implement forward/back and play/pause controls for the music player
2) Rescript the default Car Home app to use Google Navigation / Google Voice Search
3) Add music controls to the bottom of the default Car Home app
4) Replace all the Bingification with Google (obviously)
5) have the soft keys stay on while screen is on
hope to see CM6 on here loved it on my eris

6) have soft keys act as notifications..... was nice having the trackball light up with the nexus one
as long as it is built off froyo i will be happy

I know there are people working on this already, I really hope it makes it into the first series of ROMs.
7) Add a setting that allows you to enable/disable the "signal lost/found" audio alert.
8) (No-brainer - not even sure it warrants mentioning) Use a different file system (ext4?) to eliminate need for lag-fix.

That would be excellent! Only thing I am truly missing from my BB is the notification light!
so far i think i might have the best ROM idea of them all, One that doesnt have the memory hog TouchWiz!!! yeah!!! sorry guys have to, cant wait to start seeing stuff flowing out of this section!
Rom Idea:
2.2 Froyo
and the ability to use the touchwiz widgets. I really like them over HTC Sense.
Thats the only reason I wont use launcherPro....Official widgets from the manufacturer look so much better than aftermarket ones!!!
Fix GPS

Why no buttons on pulldown screen?

I used to have a Galaxy S on t-mobile and loved it. Recently picked up the razr and the one thing that is really annoying is that the notification bar "swipe down menu" from the top of the screen has no buttons to turn gps on/off, etc.
Is there any way to get these buttons on here?
No idea why in the hell they would omit that feature....

It's actually a TouchWiz (Samsung's Android skin) feature that Cyanogenmod incorporated. Bottom line: not stock Android, and not on Motorola's skin.
cm? Cyanogyn mod?
Now that i think of it i did have a custom rom flashed on there but i know it wasnt cyanogyn, it was one of the stock ones with voodoo on it so it would run faster.

Galaxy S has the options in the pulldown by default; most ROMs will incorporate it, though, since it's a nice feature. It's not something in stock Android, though.
Best thing for now is the power control widget till our phones can get bootloader unlocked and development for roms can begin. I too had that previous. I just use thd widget for now
Available in the Market as always for example via Widgetsoid.
How many times will I have to say that for people to understan, unbelievable.

Widgetsoid seems like a great app with a lot of potential and nice customization features, but on the Razr you can't toggle directly from the notification bar with it. Instead clicking on the toggle icon will popup another window to toggle the setting on or off. That and I haven't been able to change the colors of the toggles in the dropdown so that it's readable.
Notification toggle is the closest I've found. Each toggle takes up a line but you can actually turn the item on or off straight from the dropdown.

Future ROM feature wishlist

So I know that the devs are hard at work on getting us all kinds of CM, AOSP, and/or AOKP goodness, but I thought maybe if any of the devs are looking for some features to add it might be nice to have a thread they can refer to with everyones "wants" once the "needs" are met.
I'll start it off with a request to add support for BLN (back light notification) to an upcoming kernel. This, combined with the option to put the navigation bar on while dissabling the HW keys would be a great feature IMHO. Not to mention our stock notification LED pretty much sucks a big one.
ROM feature requests
Flashlight in notification drawer quick settings
More options in the shutdown menu (Boot to recovery, etc)
Get rid of the idiotic audio policy of volume reduction when plugging in headphones
Allow dialer rotation
The option to see the standard swipe lock screen before the secure lock.
True music controls on the lock screen
Better control of status bar icons (center clock, hide icons, change colors of icons, etc)
The ability to link the notification volume with the ringer volume
Volume rocker music controls
Universal Qslide
Kernel feature requests
BLN
Enable audio through USB for devices like the Infuse Car Dock (I think this is a kernel issue, if not let me know and I'll put it with the ROM stuff)
I didn't see a similar thread on here, so if there is, kindly point me to it and a mod can delete this one. And if BLN support already exists in Sk8's kernel tell me that too, ha ha.
I haven't looked into the ROMs because I'm liking stock, but a request I do have for when I do decide to flash is to have a flashlight if it hasn't been incorporated into the ROMs out now. There's a lot of times where I need to look for something and don't feel like turning on my light switch. Would be a nice thing to be implemented if it hasn't been done and can be done.

I don't know if this is what you have in mind, but I use TeslaLED: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teslacoilsw.flashlight&feature.. It has a widget you can add to the homescreen for a quick on off, as well as some other features. I actually have it as one of my lock screen apps. I wish there was a way to have it turn on when opened from the lockscreen, but it's only one extra tap.
Edit: Gah! John beat me to one.
PS: TeslaLED is only 512K, whereas Tiny Flashlight is anything but at 1.5M

My wishlist:
1. Get rid of the idiotic audio policy of volume reduction when plugging in headphones
2. Allow dialer rotation
3. Enable audio through USB for devices like the Infuse Car Dock.
The two features I really want to see are:
- The option to see the standard swipe lock screen before the secure lock.
- true music controls on the lock screen instead of using the notification controls
sent from my LGOG
My biggest things are center clock, ability to hide things on status bar, and a flashlight toggle. The Base has done pretty well but I would love a flashlight toggle in my quick settings in my notification drawer. The swipe for flashlight thing was so touchy that I disable it.
Also, I love the theme chooser app and ability to have easy themes for my ROMs like in CM10 and AOKP
EDIT: also the ability to boot straight into download and recovery mode like in certain other ROMs using the power button.
Sent from my LG-E970 using xda app-developers app
The Base ROM does have a flashlight built in, you can activate it in the notification drawer options.
I was using Tesla until I found this.
Though I do wish it was in the Quick Settings too.
I would also love native reboot options.
And lastly, I would love the ability to link the notification volume with the ringer volume.
I know. The swipe thing only works half the time and half of that half, I end up with The Base force closes

I had actually forgot about this feature. I just tried it again and sometimes it takes three or four swipes to turn on. Might be user error though.
Swipe for torch works perfect for me.
Reboot options would be nice.
Volume Button Music controls would be nicer.
I actually came up with a wish while looking at the android dev section.
It doesn't actually have to do with the rom itself, but I'm hoping that as things become further developed to not only have a Changelog but to have a what's working list/what's not working list or just the latter.
I see a lot of threads gets bogged down with DOES THIS WORK? IS THIS INCLUDED?
Granted there's a group of people out there that don't read and just flash, but it could be helpful for another group of people that compare and contrast roms (like myself) before flashing.
Anyone else agree?

That makes sense to me. I wonder if xda could get a ROM form together so all the devs can include all the same info in their ROM's thread's OP. I don't know how practical that would be, but it would be nice to have some standardization.

That is a pretty cool idea.
But from what I've seen, most ROM posts actually follow a pretty basic design.
We seem to be the odd ones out.

I've Rooted my HTC One - Now what?

I've successfully unlocked my bootloader, flashed recovery and rooted my One using Superuser. It was pretty difficult and confusing to be honest. I got Titanium Back-up and froze all those stupid bloatware apps.
Now what can I do? I see there are two pretty good roms over here in the forums, but I'm not sure if I should grab one of those or wait for other better ones? Is there a "best" rom? Anything else I can do while waiting?

My advice? Take some time and just enjoy the phone. Its too soon for there to be
much going on in terms of ROMs and MODs. But they will come...
I generally get rid of the stock ROM on a new phone as soon as possible...but I have been
impressed with Sense 5 so far...gonna rock it for a while I think.
Check out the TrickDroid rom in the international HTC One forum. I've got that on my AT&T One, and it's amazing.

One app I consider a must have for rooted devices is adblock plus. Get it and enjoy a faster, cleaner, and less data intensive internet experience. Just be aware that it's no longer part of the play store, and you'll have to sideload it.

I've rooted devices before, but never installed a custom rom. Might be fun to give it a try.
However, just to make sure I won't do anything wrong...I replaced my recovery with TWRP when I first rooted.
I'm thinking I add the .zip rom to my root directory, make a backup with TWRP, backup my apps with titanium backup, then just flash the rom and restore my apps? Is it that simple?
Also, should I wipe the dalvik in addition to the regular data?

Actually the list of improvements and added features in TrickDroid (and several other 1.29 based International ROMs) compared to the stock ROM is quite large, which very easily justifies the reason for bootloader unlocking/rooting your phone. Some of these improvements/mods are available over here in the AT&T dev section, and some are only available in International based ROMs (for now anyway)
Newer firmware than the AT&T base (1.29 compared to 1.26)
Supposedly the camera software in 1.29 is considerably better with things like improved processing for pictures; I haven't verified this for myself
That stupid permanent power saving toggle in the notification pulldown menu has been removed (replaced by a much nicer and smaller status bar toggle button)
The only-useful-maybe-one-time-but-is-always-there IME icon that pops up in the task bar (when the keyboard is being used) has been removed
For people that use Sense as their launcher, there are options to change the icon grid in the drawer to 4x5 / 5x6 instead of the screen wasting 3x4 default
There are very nice looking scrollable color toggle buttons in the pulldown menu for the normal things like wifi, bluetooth, GPS, flashlight, switching between silent mode & normal mode, etc. The toggles can be long-pressed to go directly into the options related to the function of that toggle
The stock messaging app has more options (custom background, colors for the conversation bubbles)
HTC has lowered the overall "boomsound" volume in 1.29 a bit, presumably to correct the popping sounds that people have experienced on earlier firmware builds including the AT&T 1.26 build. In my opinion, even with this lower volume, the phone is plenty loud and the speakers are still louder than my Galaxy S3. There are still ways to increase your volume back up again if you really need it (for example, the faux123 kernel has "faux sound" that can pump up the volume, among other audio tweaks)
There is a brightness mod available to lower the really high default automatic brightness settings a bit, to increase battery life
There is a mod available to temporarily turn on the display when an SMS message is received if the phone's display is off
There is a mod available to wake up the phone with the volume buttons (in addition to the power button of course)
There is a no-pin Exchange mod available for the stock email client that overrides the need for a pin # when connected to a corporate Exchange email system that requires phone security
There is a stock-based kernel available as a choice during the installation that maps the HTC logo as a menu key. Actually I think it really just maps a touch point on the display immediately above the HTC logo, but it is very close to the logo and actually works.
There is a mod available to remove the stupid 3-dot button in apps that still use a menu key. Obviously you would only want to use this mod when you've got something mapped as a menu button (either the back key long-press option or the HTC logo mapping mentioned previously)

Thanks for you post. My HTC One is on its way, and this is the ROM I plan to flash. Can you please elaborate on this last part?
Are you saying that there is a place on the settings menu to select a custom mapping for the menu button? and THEN you flash the mod? Doesn't that sound backwards? Wouldn't one flash the mod which would give you the option of a custom menu button mapping somewhere in the settings menu?
just be patience
it's take times to build a better rom for new device.maybe 3-4month.we can get perfect rom

NEW TO ANDROID! Looking for specific ROM.

Hello all,
As the title states, I'm completely new to Android. I've been with the iPhone for quite some time and have recently changed over to the HTC One. Everything is awesome so far, but there are a few annoying quirks I'd like to change to make it perfect. I've done a bit of research, but I guess my searching terms were a bit too specific? I'm looking for a custom ROM that is based on Sense 5 with 4.2.2 and WiFi calling so I can have the option to keep Blinkfeed, Zoe, TV apps and the ability to delete some of the preinstalled programs like Facebook and Twitter. In addition, I'd like to have the option to give the HTC logo wake device functionality. I believe this is done through installing the tbalden kernel? I'm looking at the Trickdroid ROM, as it seems that might be the closest thing to what I'm looking for, but in a video review I watched of it it seemed there was only a wake from volume rocker option. Also, it seems Wifi calling is unavailable at the moment? In any case, if there is something out there that you guys can suggest I'd greatly appreciate it! Thanks!!

I can at least verify a lack of WiFi calling on all 4.2.2 ROMs. We will have to wait for the official T-Mobile ROM to drop or leak to get that functionality.

So once the 4.2.2 update comes out for T-Mobile HTC One's, we'll be able to have wifi calling capability with any 4.2.2 ROM ie. Trickdroid? Also, just a quick side question, I'm looking at the Trickdroid page and it says there is an option for the tbalden kernel, which is where the htclogo2wake functionality lies. Does this mean while installing Trickdroid, I'll have the option to install that instead of the stock kernel and have the options to map my HTC logo? Thanks!

To answer your first question, as long as the setup of WiFi calling is the same way as 4.1.2, then I see no reason why it wouldn't work.

Trickdroid is great! I've been using it for quite some time and no issues. I use my cell as my work phone so reliability is big for me - and no problems... I haven't played too much with any of the kernels for the one but you will need to flash it separately. Welcome to Android!

That's good to hear! And thanks for the welcome! I see on the Trickdroid page that the tbalden kernel is an option. Does that mean it's already built into the ROM and that I'll have the option to remap the HTC logo or is there something I have to do along the lines of choosing it during the ROM install? Thanks!

If I remember correctly, Trickdroid uses Aroma installer, which takes you through an install wizard (prone to freezing so don't worry if it freezes, just reboot and retry) and let's you select a bunch of different options, not sure if Kernel selection is included in that or not.
Thanks for the info. I just wanna get all the info I can before attempting my first custom ROM install. That kernel is pretty much the biggest thing I'm looking for, this power button at the top thing is getting a bit annoying.. lol Also, I have an unrelated question that I'm hoping maybe someone here could answer. I couldn't find anything through searching the forums. Are the sound profiles on our phones customizable? Every time I change profiles, I have to change the settings manually. For example, I want the vibrate profile to quiet all sound and just vibrate for everything. However, when I go back to normal and switch back to vibrate, the sound for notifications and alarms are back on. Doesn't this defeat the purpose of profiles??
No 4.2.2 based rom supports wifi calling so far. If you want a customized rom, try viper. You will addict to it.

So if I installed a 4.2.2 ROM now, would wifi calling be enabled when T-Mobile releases its official update automatically? Or will I have reinstall the ROM?

no. you will have to wait for the update for the rom your on for wifi calling. as far as roms go viper has the most customization by far and arhd is the closest to stock but i recommend viper as you can keep it stock looking or if you want to customize to your hearts content and i mean everything is customizable. and venom hub has the kernels that enable logo2wake and many other options available. happy flashing bro:highfive:
Ok, Thanks! I'll definitely take a look at Viper then. Also, are you saying that it has the tbalden kernel already built into it? As in I don't have to do anything separate in order to use logo2wake?

no. in the venom hub which is an app for viper rom it has all the compatible kernels and when you select it. it will download it and boot to recovery and flash it(twrp only cwm manual flash only)
cool, I'll definitely look into viper. So you're saying that it's based off of the sense UI and looks stock until you start customizing? Because that is exactly what I'm looking for. I want to have pretty much everything stock with the exception of the battery icon in the status bar, logo2wake and some other little things here and there. Also, is there an option to wake the screen when you get a text or notification without having to use a third party app? Seems like such a no-brainer for this to be a part of the phone stock, but for some reason is not.

My favorite Rom is the Google Edition Rom.
I wanted some AOSP but every rom i tried had terrible battery life (like 1% dropping every 3 minutes) with just using web browser. I tried ARHD GE, CyanogenMod, AHRD Sense version, faux kernel, aux kernel and elemental kernel and everything was kind of the same. Now im using Sense based Insertcoin ROM and i must say that battery life is way better and got rid of most of bloatware
