Could this too good to be true? - Motorola Droid X2

I found this article while surfing around today. What do you think?
http://www.slashgear.com/motorola-to-unlock-bootloaders-starting-with-the-photon-q-26240460/

Motorola sponsored bootloader unlock. Would be nice. Wonder if it'll only apply to any new phone only. HTC applied it to almost all previous phones but what incentive does Motorola have to put work into phones that are no longer being sold?

It really shouldn't be a huge deal, but they have to create a small bit of software that wipes the device, unlocks the bootloader, and marks that the warranty is void somehow.

And what they have not said that perhaps the phone would have to be bought at full price. You have to wonder how they plan to put the catch in there.

so i saw this tweet interaction on Motorola's website and followed it to a twitter user who asks about a RAZR user and it doesn't look like it will happen (for any of us). If they do release some downloadable tool maybe there's a hope it can be exploited. Other than that don't hold your breath.

This is only for the new Moto Q (or whatever it's called) and currently, it's only for Sprint customers. No unlocking of older phones, especially on Big Red.

we may be able to use the tool in some way though..
but im just excited for possible kexec on the dx2

Yeah way too good to be true and not coming to Dx2 , Verizon already nixed plans for moto unlocks on some devices. Big V wants to suck you dry and they don;t want any "unauthorized " features being added . They want a dime for every Facebook message you send , mark my words, that will be coming soon to a phone near you.

Yeah I call bs... moto never gonna gas about you ke or any one .... especialy "laura" ...lmao .
I had a good laugh at that screen shot especially when the bot gavevher the same bs generic protocol answer second time around.
We are on our own. Just accept it.
Even if they do start allowing unlocking via their version of unlock tool.... yoy think big red gonna allow that?
Just look at htc ...." from now on all our phones will be unlockable ..."
(Crowd cheers)
Few minutes later...
"Except all our new flagship phones on att.. and maybe some on verizon... ok ok maybe so truth is we have unlock tool but you can't use it..."
One day..
One day
Some dev is going to figure out some kind of universal unlock tool...
Until that day ....were just slaves.

ICS launch event

Who watched the ICS launch and is even more angry about having a locked bootloader?
Sent from my DROID X2 using xda premium
I watched the event. Now hoping that the X2 is on the list to get the update.
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App
I am going to say that the X2 wont get it, at least not anytime soon until Moto breaks it down and skins it(so maybe next summer). The fact that there is so much built into the phone to function without buttons means that Moto has to build in and map their functionality. And, since supposedly the Xoom is the first to get it on tablet, you would think it would go to the Razr, then Bionic/Atrix 2/Photon 4g, THEN the lower end devices. Needless to say, I don't think you should get your hopes up.
I watched it though. I was VERY impressed with some of the things I saw! The lock screen portion with the video was really cool! However, I don't think I would want my phone to do that everytime, seems too tedious still. Maybe after the phone has been passive for 20 minutes or something like that.

Here is why it had me thinking. Moto always blames Verizon for the BL. HTC and Sammy phones get unlocked all day. So why would Verizon bias Moto? It gets the gears churning boys...

I don't believe any Moto phone has their bl unlocked, do they? The lock is all Moto. My gut is telling me if it were up to Google they would have all phones
unlocked and completely open.

Back on topic, I heard that all phones running 2.3 will get ics...that means us. So I have my hopes up. I also have my hopes that moto will make good on their deadline to unlock their devices.

My thoughts are, with the patent wars, Google is trying to cover their ass right now. Until the proposed deal is approved, they are wanting to make sure that nothing slips thru the cracks that could be harmful to their cause in the hands of the opposition. Not to mention, they probably have some new devices in testing along with new hardware components that would be in Google's best interest not to have leaked until they are certified by the FCC. I am going to have to give Google the benefit of the doubt, and say until the deal is approved, they are doing what they can to cover their asses.
As far as VZW being to blame for Moto, I think it has to do with the fact that Moto is an American company, and they can be pressured by big Red. Whereas HTC and Samsung typically have a broader market share outside of the US. Especially with Sammy being a monstrosity of a Korean company in all terms. I lived in Korea for 2 years(Army), LG and Sammy run their world over their! LG is even the biggest ISP! They are leaps and bounds beyond what we have in the US over there though. Thanks to the FCC and FTC! My computer monitors are 2 Innopix 24" OLED 1920x1200 and I bought them there almost 4 years ago for $150/ea! I built my entire computer setup there Feb 2008, I still score a 6.8 on Windows experience index. Cost me less than $1,500 for what would have cost $4,000 easily to buy off of Best Buys shelf... Not to mention Apple, ugh.

The simple fact that they locked the Razr before it is even released, lends me to believe your hopes will be crushed. Sorry man, no reason to lock a phone during the same period you stated you would unlock them.
Now, if 4.0 is still a "Google Experience" as other phones update to it, without their blur's and sense's like honeycomb was for tablets, MAYBE.

Here's an avenue that could possibly be pursued - forward a copy of the petition to the Federal Trade Commission for their input. Put it as a restraint of trade issue and you might get somewhere. If HTC/Samsung/LG phones are being unlocked, then it stands to reason that Verizon is keeping Motorola on a short leash and interfering with consumers rights.
I have participated in the soaks tests and it seems to me they do it more as a formality rather than caring on input. I say what I think there but I never see any changes that come from that input. It seems the soaks are released whether there are problems with them or not.
I can see why some would take a realistic view. Now if the deal for Google to buy Motorola gets approved I expect we will see some good changes. I am still hoping that makes it through. So I would say I am cautiously optimistic. Maybe the petition will help too though I expect the deal they have with Verizon might get in the way.

Actually Verizon loves to slow it down so they can figure out how to nickel and dime customers to rake in more $$$. That's it. After all, the Big V would not want you to install any "unauthorized" enhancements would they? No Sir, they want to make sure and get every dime they can out of you for their poor services.
Guess this is another example of Motorola and Verizon selfishness..... dish out a phone that has so much potential and control every damn aspect of the phone YOU PAID for... then release a slightly modified version of the same product that you regret buying but can't do anything because of your 2 years contract.... All because these bastards just wanna squeeze every penny out of your pocket.
Not to mention not standing by your phone that's barely a year old and ditching it in every single way possible is plain unfair... no ics for dx2 officially, now we can't even have an option of unlocking our phones because we want to renew its life and open up its potentials? Denied by those bastards

Bootloader Unlock Petition- Please Retweet, sign, and send to LG

Retweet this https://twitter.com/xboxfanj/status/263413673643630593
And send this to all applicable LG support channels
Why are you alienating the development enthusiasts with your Optimus G? It has unparalleled hardware, but the locked bootloader makes it a tough sell for myself and the development enthusiasts at XDA, RootzWiki, and many more sites, and it also makes me unlikely to recommend it to my friends and family who go to me for advice on their technological purchases (and people who go to other development experts around the world). Samsung has unlocked bootloaders. Motorola and HTC have unlockable bootloaders. Now, it's time to step it up, LG and follow suit. I know you don't want me and millions of people like me to buy from your competitors. So fix it!
I really want to buy your Optimus G and have the beautiful design and amazing S4 Pro processor, but if I have to forfeit that to be able to use my phone how I would like, that's a sacrifice I am willing to make.
There are 1,310 people and counting who have signed this petition asking for an unlockable bootloader, so get your act together, LG.
http://www.change.org/petitions/lg-...opportunity-to-unlock-bootloader-in-lg-phones
This could propel you ahead of Samsung, Apple, and HTC, since your hardware at the moment is by far the best, but your software, updates, and developer support are lacking. An unlockable bootloader would end these complaints and make hundreds of thousands of people more likely to buy an Optimus G.
And don't forget to sign this petition: http://www.change.org/petitions/lg-...opportunity-to-unlock-bootloader-in-lg-phones
Together, we can make LG change.
Together, we can make the Optimus G a better phone.
Let's unite and make LG unlock those bootloaders, just as consumers have made HTC and Motorola do the same.
This too: https://twitter.com/xboxfanj/status/263415788218753024
And send that to their other channels as well. The more people that send this, the more likely it is that LG will acquiesce.
Here is the response I got from LG's email:
------Reply to Your Inquiry-------
The bootloader is locked, Jake, at the Carrier's request I'm afraid.
If you are looking for a Developer device, however, then you can look forward to a device that Google should be announcing sometime this week.
So sorry about the inconvenience this has caused, and I hope you have a great day!
That's BS since Sprint, my carrier, doesn't have any locked devices.
I told them that and haven't heard back yet.

Locked bootloader eh? That's a deal breaker.
And if they do unlock it eventually they'll probably impose some method of being able to tell it's been unlocked, like my Vivid's "relocked" text if you relock voiding any chance of a warranty claim if it breaks.
Bummer. Really figured this phone might be better than the nexus 4 since it's pretty much identical but has more storage, an sd and lte. If it was unlocked, you could pretty much make it a nexus with no compromises.
Also pretty pathetic it only has 4.03 on it. What's with manufacturers releasing new phones with outdated oses on it?

Should I buy Motorola Atrix 4G or Sony Xperia Sola?

Need some advice; should I buy the Motorola Atrix 4G or Sony Xperia Sola? I plan to use it with Straight Talk AT&T.
I'd go with the xperia if you have no other option. The Atrix has better specs but you'll at least start out with ICS on that and likely get JB later on. Moto has all nut abandoned the Atrix and aside from a small patch coming soon it has little life left before it's ancient history.

No, I'd rather have a phone that can be upgraded. I love the Atrix but for 'financial reasons' it's been ditched by it's manufacturer offering virtually no further support.
Although there is a slight possibility of an agreement whereby we may be able to get source for the upgrades, there won't be any official upgrades. To me there is no excuse for such poor support of a device. Particularly when you consider far more complex computers receiving updates sometimes a decade or more after it's release. I do give at least some respect (even though I shouldn't) for the fact that they dug themselves a hole to support far too many devices at once with a runaway release of newer ones each year which makes it logistically impossible to support them.

Xperia Sola.
Sony or Samsung.
Xperia Sola. It have much better support, plus, it will get ported stock JB.
If you seek for a latest update, minimal usage(surfing, text, mainstream games)get the Sola. Overall experience, I'd go for Atrix eventho it got left behind with Gingy..
The Atrix have tons of awesome hardware (fingerprint sensor etc) , nice build quality and better audio. If you're much of a customizing and not afraid of unlocking your phone, go for Atrix
Don't buy an operator branded Sony handset! Unbranded ones are great, and very well supported but going by my experience with a friend's Xperia U, branded handsets are locked down like Fort Knox.
Why not an atrix2?

I'm sure the AT&T Motorola X will come especially locked to prevent you accidentally installing a 'software update' if such a thing even exists. and for those who like to dig deeper, a special feature to shoot you in the face if you try to unlock the bootloader.
No thanks, never again. I won't give the company any money on principal, even if the next Nexus is a Motorola, and it's otherwise great.
That's why I'm going with the T-Mobile unsubsidized plans, and if it's as cheap as the Nexus 4 unlocked I'm going to get it.

Sad Motorola boycotter is sad to hear that XDA members will not be boycotting crappy companies who need to apologise for their crappy ways and sort this situation out by releasing kernel source at the very least.
They'll do it again, I'm sure. Don't get burned. I mean, they promised to change their ways just before cancelling the Atrix update.

Agreed. However, I was just looking at AT&T's current offerings, with the exception of a couple devices, their Android lineup is the most underwhelming thing I've seen since my LG Vu.
Edit:
