[Q] ¿should I exchange my Xperia S with a Galaxy Nexus? - Sony Xperia P, U, Sola, Go

Hi, first of all I've to say sorry because my English is very poor
Since april I've had a simfree Xperia S, with bootloader unlock allowed (I haven't done it yet, including root or any mod)
There are two things that I don't like from the XPS:
-ICS is very laggy
-The battery isn't removable.
I usually stay away from my house the entire day, and I like watching films or series in the phone, so by the end of the day I always run out of battery and I need to carry with a USB portable battery and keep it connected for hours to recharge the phone.
With the galaxy nexus, I can buy the extended battery and carry with the stock one so when the extended is empty I can swap the batteries and begin at 100% again
The other thing I like from the Galaxy Nexus is the amoled screen, because of the better viewing angles than XPS and the bigger size when playing video
The two things I don't like from the Galaxy are the too low 16gb of storage and the GPS (I don't know if it is bad, but sure it isn't as good as the XPS)
And at the other hand, Nexus will be always up to dated with android version, and we don't know if XPS will be updated to 4.1

If you want a Nexus, wait for the new one(s) released this fall.

I don't want to pay a lot for it and this fall the new nexus will be very expensive and I will have to wait for about 6 months more.
I don't have to pay anything for trading my xperia s with a galaxy nexus.

Use a different launcher and the battery is removable if you really need to remove or replace it.

But not for regular use as anthon needs !

There is likely to be a series of Nexii, so you should be able to find something that suits you.

Please take note that galaxy nexus has on screen time of about 3hour plus only, while Xperia has higher on screen time.
Charging portable battery is easier than charging additional battery?
Xperia has a better rear camera while nexus has better front camera. Lol
Both phone are using outdated hardware, does it even matters?
At least in my country, Singapore, xperia s is certified for nfc payment while nexus isn't. (only xperia s, p, s3 and Samsung advance plus)

I have both GN on JB and XS on GB (forget about ICS, too many problems for me)
Although GN is extremely smooth and battery last much longer under normal use ( 2 days vs 1 day max) the AMOLED is really suck.
Yes, the view angle is incredible, the black level is top notch, but the image quality is very disappointing, color is not accurate, pen tile makes image blurry/ not sharp.

Finally I think that I'm going to keep my XPS until the new nexus
I will try the MIUI and Cyanogen Roms
Thanks to all for your help

The screen on the Galaxy Nexus is not that great. Sure you get better viewing angles but lower ppi, crappy whites, pentile, and image ghosting. I bought both phones and ended up sending the Nexus back. I just can't stand Samsung.

Pentile sucks man, I am sorry. My buddy has a Nexus and compared to my Xperia S the screen is not nearly as clear. Viewing the web on the Nexus is not very good as text isn't crisp unless zoomed in.
Also battery isn't that great on the Nexus either, if you view alot of internet it will drain much faster than the Xperia S.

I thought the same thing when coming from a galaxy nexus. Now that I'm running CM9 FXP132 I live this phone! Performance is incredible and my battery life doubled!

Keep the Xperia S
First of all....the XS display is absolutely brilliant...even better than S3 display.Look at the 2 screens in the same time and you will notice the difference.Xperia S display colors are more real and the black is really really black. And is also the ppi intensity. Is better on Xperia S!The CPU on Nexus is significantly poorly than Xperia`s S!Even overclocked the score at megaflops doesn`t equal the score obtained by Xperia S CPU.And we have for the Xperia S a kernel oc-ed to 1,9Mhz!The camera on Xperia S makes perfect pictures!12 mpx > 5 mpx on Nexus.I don`t know about the GPU`s on both of the devices but the games on xperia s runs very well. The only advantage on Nexus is the removable battery and better technical support!overall except the lack of technical support the Xperia S is a better(technical and look)phone!

You're asking this in an Xperia forum lol bias is everywhere. Each device has its pros and cons. Personally if I had the option, I'd go for the Nexus, but if you can hold off until later this year as K900 said, you'll be in for a big improvement.

GN vs XS on xperia forum doesn't mean bias, if you got no comparison, GN is brilliant, i came from GN (now my GF is using it), switched to XS.
i had no complaint about GN before switch, i got lots of complaint after making the switch for both.
XS = laggy UI, laggy UI and laggy UI, man the spec is better but why laggy?
GN = wow the screen sucks big time, colour, sharpness (not due to ppi but pentile) and burning (ghost and shadow and stupid burn and much more)
if you use it everyday, the screen is where you are looking at everyday when using the phone. although XS LCD is a tad old fashion (why not IPS like iphone), switch from XS to GN will be your biggest mistake. if you are coming to a decision which phone you should buy then it depends
(smoothness and update = GN , design, camera and screen = XS)

Yeah I agree completely, my buddy who love is Galaxy Nexus has been complaining about the screen ghosting lately. Also the Xperia S is not laggy if you install a custom rom for it. Mine does good work.

YES you should.
If you're not satisfied with the phone you have now, then let it go. Questioning whether to replace it or not will just make u see more and more bad things about it. So why keeping it? And chances are, you will not be satisfied with Nexus either. You see people here are the kind to get any phone they want, stick to it and make the most of it.

You must remember, Reality Display color is more natural than Super Amoled (overcolour)

if you are to replace your sxs, do it with a newer gen s4 processor. otherwise, you wouldn't feel much difference.

Anyone switch from iPhone 4s

Thinking about making the switch. If I switch I was looking for a phone that would be better than the iPhone retina display as well as have a better camera. The Xperia S is probably the only android that beats the iPhone in these areas. Looking for some experiences from anyone who switched.

Tough call, iphone has far more accessories and add ons.
The S camera still struggles a bit in low light, colours have a blueish blotchy look in low light, where the iphone gets a high level of grain but colour stays accurate.
For Camera speed and flexibility the S wins hands down.
And for Display the S is a little better than the iphone, nice and crisp with good contrast and sharpness. Best display I have seen.
Coming from iOS to Android or vice versa is something by itself to be discussed since they are two different animals.
Xperia S has a bigger screen. Good resolution and very crisp.
I think Xperia S has a better Design, even tho I like iPhone 4S.
I like camera on Xperia S more, I took some photos with my wife's 4S and compared them and to my eyes, Xperia S had better coloring.
But I can't get my wife to switch since she likes her iPhone very much and I can experience the two worlds at once.
I've just sold my factory unlocked iphone 4s white today and I am waitting for my Xperia S to be delivered tomorrow. I love the Xperia S design and the 12mpx camera, bigger screen and NFC.
Had a iPhone 4 before so I can't compare camera but regarding the screen I would say nothing really separate them quality wise but I do enjoy the much bigger one on my Sony.

It's a bit odd that the Sony camera used in the iPhone4s may be better than the Sony camera in a Sony phone.
4 weeks ago they stole my Iphone 4s and i bought this phone. Something else.
I can say that i miss the smoothness and the build quality of ios. Also the quality apps.. I miss it on the android.

My experience with the camera is quite opposite.. The Xperia S beats the Iphone 4S camera in any way.. Tested vs. 4S in low light environment and the iphone 4S had a really dark picture with no detail and the pics looked much brighter and crisper on my phone. Think screens a relatively comparable. Ie. the screen on Iphone 4s is very good, but still think colors a slightly better on XS.
Also love the dialer app.. Very well done..
Wife has already got iphone 4, which I sometimes use too so I didn't go for iphone 4s - plus the cost of the handset. The single most annoying thing about the Sony S is the battery power! How did they get 420 hours for 3g? According to gsmarena.com btw. Although I play with the phone a little too much, even if I put it aside, I don't think it would last more than two days unless I left it on flight mode! Only lost 2% battery life overnight in flight mode, where it would have probably been at least 15% normally!
Overall good, hoping for ICS to improve things further.
I have a 4s as well as my Xperia - plan on keeping both as I can never decide conclusively on ios or Android
There are times the Xperia wins for me - screen real estate for media etc, wide screen resolution in camera and times when the iPhone suits me more due to its compact size. I've found the camera on the Xperia to have a slight edge to my eyes so it's the phone of choice on my family day out
Sound quality is pretty close through headphones - I'd say with my Soundmagic E10s the Xperia might edge it for me although the iPhone seems able to drive the phones louder.
Overall though the Xperia is probably my favourite Droid so far if you're a fan of the OS you won't be disappointed.

I sold iphone 4S and I have now the Xperia S.....it's amazing to see that the market offer a lot of better phones than iphone. Xperia S it's better in everythig: camera is better, screen is the best possible at the moment and much better than iphone 4s screen, videos are better, battery is better, hardware is better! In my experience, the iphone 4s has more comprehensive apps however the file management system sucks, so does itunes so if you have a lot of documents or folders android is better.
The xperia s screen is better but has worse viewing angles, also after the recent firmware update my 4s battery life has at the very least doubled making it last longer than the xperia s although I'm not sure how much longer yet.
The camera of the iphone 4s is better with a lot less noise and doesn't ever crash whereas the xperia s requires better light conditions however sometimes it produces a more vibrant colour. Video I haven't tested much but the iphone 4s video is amazing whereas the xperia s is decent in terms of frame rate and some slight image stabilisation problems.
For photo and video editing apps in particular, or if you want to be able to find 3d games for example the iphone 4s is better right now. Iphoto and imovie surpass anything I've seen on google play and some 3d games haven't been updated for newer android phones so you may not be able to find games even if they're on the store. I used microsoft photosyth on the iphone 4s but it's not available on android so annoying, but all my core needs are satisfied.
The xperia s plays flash, if the flash it's playing is optimised for mobile you can even play it in full screen 1080p on a tv via HDMI however if it's not optimised standard flash video will be a bit slow.
Any other questions just ask.

+1 for this.
I would say the cameras are a wash, pretty much the same overall. (edge to Xperia in some areas and iphone in others)
I really miss the quality/quantity of the ios apps. But I found I was getting app burnout. D/L too many redundant apps. etc.
With my use I would say the battery life is pretty much the same too.
Honestly, big reasons for swapping to the Xperia for me
iphone =
cramped screen for video and games
4:3 (seriously apple)
itunes to add anything is a PITA (ie, I want to add one video to watch and I am leaving for work in 5 min)
Needing to open an app to view anything (widgets anyone)

why did you go for the sxs??

hi all, i wanted to know why you choose the sxs, i did it for the simple reason that i love sony phones..and i like to upgrade my phone..
Sent from my LT26i using xda premium
Screen (HD + readable in sunlight) + good (theritically) camera + good processor + ICS ready + Sony normally doing good music players
It's design! It looks so sleek from almost any angle. (like the transparent strip at the bottom)
A good CPU as well, although not the best out there, it is optimized well and really responsive.
The HD screen of course, with it's amazing pixel density.
The camera with dedicated shutter key allows for quick and fast photo taking.
Because S2 felt cheap and plasticky. SXS felt great when using.
I had read and seen loads of review before and after the sxs was launched. Let me tell you seeing it on the monitor and holding it in hand are not the same thing.
I went to a local electronics store to see the phone, once I saw the actual thing and held it...it was love at first sight.
Dont Buy Xperia S if...
Xperia S is really a good phone from display 342 ppi, 12M, looks etc...
But dont buy it if...
1. You want to make video calls...it does not support it
2. Photos are really shaking mostly...very poor low light photos
3. Battery Drains like indian rains
Because I liked the matte feel, design, camera, and also because it is comparable in price with HTC Sensation and cheaper than SGS2. I only paid $450 AUD, which is 350 euros.

No point of understanding this!
You check it out yourself, find what you feel good and bad and decide to buy/reject.
Each users have their own preference/taste.
It looks like a small television!
No but seriously,
- Supersleek design
- 12M camera
- HD screen
- I like Sony
- Able to rub it in my iFriends' faces.
reviews
i chose sxs as an upgrade from htc hd 2 with gingerbread thanks to doom kernal,
upgrade was a toss up between the galaxy note, htc one x and the htc beats sensation xl,
after reading the reviews the camera on the xperia s was by far the best out of the bunch along with the screen.
the hdmi capability and the fact the screen was so clear made me jump ship from htc to sony,
i didnt want a phone the size of the htc one x or galaxy note,
the only bad points on reviews about the xs were the covers fro hdmi and usb port, even though iphone, htc and samsung dont have covers on theres, the fact it was non removable battery, again same as i-phone (and im sorry 32gb is plenty) and the fact it had a dual core not a quad core, sorry but why would i need a quad core in my phone, there are no apps that need it and likely not going to be until my next upgrade,
plus i love the look of the xperia s in white compared to the htx one x and the galaxy note was horrible to hold for me,
despite the fact sony have let us down with the firmware updates i love the phone to bits,

Just joking xD
Just HD in this tiny screen..
Even my friends where amazed when they saw it...
Its just awesome!!
But the only BIG problem is.. Fat32.......... If you know what i mean..
And forgot to say.. The design...

I got the SXS because it was supperior in various ways to the SXP (which I had as an choice also):
- HD screen
- bigger battery
- 32 GByte storage
I went with Xperia S cuz
1. It's a SONY !!
2. The sleek design (looks like a Sony Bravia )
3. The screen !!!
4. The 12 mpx cam and also the fast capture functionality
5. The build quality and the premium feel in the hand
6. Stunning UI
And
Cuz its the first SONY device after 10 years
- Sony build quality, One of the main reasons I don't like SGSses.
- Good components and testing.
- Good battery and charging system, battery-life is a different thing. One trolling process is enough to **** it up (widgets!).
- Get's 4.0, STABLE. A perfect base for slimming down and tweaking.
- Camera
- The tags
- Screen, LCD fanboy, I like reading in the sun..
- Original UI, personally I don't really care about that. In the end my Android device UI looks the same on all phones. LauncherPro4TW.
cuz' I am a fanboy.
and a simple reason that Sony makes thing beautiful.

Just got the Galaxy S4 - I prefer the LGOG

Just received the new Galaxy S4 yesterday. After playing around with it for a day, I must say that I'm quite indifferent about it. I don't consider it a huge upgrade from the LGOG at all... Here's some initial thoughts:
Display - I kept reading all the hype about the 1080p Super AMOLED display on the S4 and had very high expectations. It's OK at best. A pentile-matrix display is still no match for full RGB LCD pixels like on the OG, even at 720p. The S4's autobrightness is also set much too dim, and I find myself having to manually slide the brightness level up and down to fit the surrounding lighting.
Build Quality/Appearance - The LGOG definitely feels like a higher quality handset than the S4 when you compare the two. The button layout and location of the ports are pretty much identical (which are some of the things that kept me from getting the HTC One instead). However, the glass back and diamond pattern of the LG just looks better, plain and simple.
OS Skin - I find that LG's Android skin is much more customizable than Samsung's Touchwiz. Using the LGOG stock out of the box feels like you're using a custom ROM from the XDA forums, there are so many customization options.
Performance - This is where the LGOG really shines. I have yet to find anything that makes the LGOG lag. Every animation and action done on the phone looks like it's running at 60fps. Switching between apps is instantaneous and the user experience is a pleasure. With all the beefed up internals of the S4 (higher processor and GPU clock speeds), I still saw some lagginess when performing certain actions. This was something I was not expecting on the S4, but I am pretty sure it has to do with all the new bells and whistles Samsung tried to cram into the phone (Air View, Air Gesture, Smart Stay, Smart Scroll, etc). Bottom line, the S4 benchmarks might be higher, but in daily use the LGOG is a smoother user experience.
Battery Life - This is the only thing that is still up in the air, as I have only had the S4 for one day. I expect the S4 to be better in this category though since it has a higher capacity battery, and judging from existing reviews.
Hope this post helps anyone that is on the fence between these 2 phones! I'd be happy to answer questions.
It would be awesome if you can do some sort of video comparison. (Don’t have to be really professional one… Just a simple video) If you have some time to kill.
I don't expect the S4 to last longer. Why? There's too much extra crap in there and a bigger screen, hence the bigger battery. Its probably going to be the same, if not worse.
I thought about getting that phone, but after previewing it and the HTC one, I had to stay with my LGOG and my Nexus 4.
I hate my S3 now since I got the Nexus and then LG.

I used to have a Nexus 4 also, and like the OG much better (capacitive buttons, LTE, SD card slot). Especially now that the OG has fully functioning AOSP roms. The only thing I don't like is how HOT the phone gets during heavy use or internet browsing using mobile network data. I'm sure the high temps negatively affect battery life.
It still stands that I am largely unimpressed by the Galaxy S4 when compared to the OG. Even their cameras are comparable in normal outdoor daylight. I have not tested low light yet, but pretty much all phone cameras suck in low light except for a few (Nokia 808, HTC One, Lumia 920).
I got my S4 last weekend and have to say I agree with OP, after couple days of using the S4 couldn't wait to get back to my LGOG with CM10.1. The S4 display was disappointing to me and it was extremely laggy, much more then my S3.
A guy at my local best buy just got one and it just doesn't seem up to par with my LGOG like I thought it would and my display looks better too

You guys are comparing the s4 with the LGOG!! This phone has been out for a long time now. And not that many roms.. I understand it took awhile to unlock the bootloader. And its crappy LG.. Bad support. I was just gifted this phone but i guess i just have to sale it or convert it into a N4
Are you talking about Quad or Eight Core SIV? I have the Quad one and I still prefer the DNA or the LGOG. Yes it is an LG so rarely gets updates but aside from that LGOG is much better.
Sell the SIV and use your LGOG

IPS displays offer awesome viewing angles, colors, saturation, more light viewing, and battery life. That Super AMOLED is an OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) that gives you truer blacks than any LCD technology could hope to (even plasma isn't up to par). It offers great colors, viewing angles, brightness, saturation, etc and better battery life in a screen tech vs screen tech heads up. LG is great with their phones and has really stepped up since my last ATT Phone, the Shine (man I loved that phone). Their support is there and have stepped it up with updates for all their products across the board. Kind of hard to compare technology of a phone seven to nine months old to a newer phone. I actually lag my LGOG using LG's own keyboard on games like RoB, MWOH, and FFAB. Of course many SGS2 would freeze before I even rooted and ROM'd, my LGOG isn't freezing though it can lag and stutter (not rooted on my new one or anything yet).
LG doesn't give us a removable battery here but that's not a killer to me. The screen also is too easy to break (mine, on a brand new one only two weeks old that was rooyed and freegee'd actually had a crack go across the bottom of my screen and it was never dropped or anything.) My SGS2 was dropped and barely had a chip in it and that was on the side.
The SGS4 is thin and plasticky to me. I don't mind thinness (the LGOG is about the same as my SGS2) but it's about as slippery as my LGOG and costs way more.
The screen on the SGS4 uses a diamond tile matrix overlay on top of the OLED (AMOLED) LED backing. It's not terrible and is actually better than the SGS3 version. However the ppi is greatly enhanced but Samsung really doesn't need that type of overlay.
In all the LGOG feels better and responds better than the SGS4 in my opinion. To me it seems LG did better at optimizing their software for the LGOG than Samsung did with their phone, hence the lag.

Battery life vs Galaxy S4

I'm currently deciding between the ultra and the note 3, and am leaning towards the ultra cos of the colour tints that seem to affect all the amoleds I've seen.
Anyway the one thing that worries me is how most reviews say battery life when web browsing is poor. Gsmarena's test was depressing reading with the ultra's result putting it right down the table level with some pretty old phones.
I'm not expecting miracles with the large screen but it would be good to know if the ultra can get close to the s4's battery life, once the battery has been run in, as I currently have an s4.
Could someone who has come from an s4 comment on how the battery life compares, especially with web browsing?
Thanks

Anyway the one thing that worries me is how most reviews say battery life when web browsing is poor. Gsmarena's test was depressing reading with the ultra's result putting it right down the table level with some pretty old phones.
I'm not expecting miracles with the large screen but it would be good to know if the ultra can get close to the s4's battery life, once the battery has been run in, as I currently have an s4.
Could someone who has come from an s4 comment on how the battery life compares, especially with web browsing?
Thanks

I had an S4 that I sold recently. The Ultra stacks up pretty well against it. The battery doesn't last as long...
So for an average day I would have 30-40 % at the end of a day using the S4
For an average day on the Ultra I have 20-30%
This is a day of 10 or so phone calls. Wifi on all day, bluetooth on all day. Mobile data on all day, but only used for about an hour for the entire day. (as wifi at work and home) Many emails (40-50) and a few txts...
The ultra will get your through the day. But don't expect it to last 2 days unless your usage is less than what mine is.
NB: I had a play with the Note 3. I'm glad I didnt go with it. just an over sized S4. And I couldn't get used to that small screen! I know that sounds funny.. but the note 3 is too small for me now
Hope that helps.
Remeber that you can replace the battery in the sgs 4. So if the battery gets bad after some month change it. If you want good battery life get the g2 you will not regret it. The x1 should have a good battery life too although my boss has it and said it is not that great.(batterylife wise)

Thanks for the replies.
My main priority is to get the biggest and best display for movies and reading magazines. Getting the longest battery life phone is not important but I had just worried when I read z ultra reviews such as the gsmarena web browsing time of just 5 hours.
Good to know it actually seems OK though.
Thanks again.

i have my z ultra and for the most part love it but battery life is nowhere near as good as the galaxy note 2 i had prev even though it was the same size battery (of course the ultra has a much higher res screen to deal with). tis why i've ordered a case with a 5000mah battery built in

Sony is acknowledge as one of the best battery manufacturer. If the battery would be damaged after just a couple of months on any smartphone I would be mad and sale the phone off.
the XZU is certainly not the best at battery, but really impressive for battery efficiency. Huge screen and impressive hardware and it keep easily a full day with heavy use. I use to play some games, have wifi and 3g always on and do a lot of Web browsing and xda. Also hear music and got always over 5h30 of screen on with over 14h.

Boom!
@ lordmanhattan.
Im seeing similar results.
Used it extensively with wireless recently and it lasted at least 9 hrs with the screen mostly on. Was very impressed.

Yeah, as long as you don't do very CPU intensive tasks, such as gaming and stuff like that, the battery will last a long time.

I switched from Samsung Galaxy S4 to Z Ultra and I can say, battery life of the Z Ultra when screen on is much better than the GS4... I have got the Battery Monitor Widget on both phones and can see the S4 consistently consumes over 40% battery per hour when screen on, while the Z Ultra normally only consumes 15-20% per hour when screen on =) :silly:
Thanks for all the replies guys.
Just one question for those who have cone from the s4, how do you find the screen quality of the ultra for watching movies compared to the amoled?
I do love the blacks of the s4 screen but mine already has burn in which sucks so am keen to go LCD next time, but those blacks.....

I think the Z Ultra display quality is at least on par with S4, if not better. Both screens are extremely sharp. I don't really feel Z Ultra's black level is an issue to me. I think the Z Ultra has more natural color tone than the S4. In particular, I have always found the S4 to be having a slight "green tint" especially when not looking at the screen straight on. The Z Ultra simply has excellent viewing angle and great color even when viewed sideways. :good::good:

I noticed that my Galaxy Note (almost 3 years old now) had some burning. There were some pixels that didn't shine as clear. Mostly around the middle. Ran a LCD test and it look really bad on red and green.
The S4 was still ok, and I'm pretty sure the lines i saw on it were because of the screen protector.
So amoLED screen do burn out faster. They have richer colours, over saturated so not realistic. Compared to the Sony Ultra that has more realistic colours but if you compare that to a samsung device it will look dull.
- So if you want saturated colours then the Note 3 will look great. If you want realistic colours the Ultra will be better.
It comes down to preference. I used to love the amoLED screens, but now I like the Ultra display better.

Yeah, I currently love amoleds for watching movies, the blacks and vibrant colours are so nice to me. However my s4 is only 5 months old and has noticeable burn in on the status bar and so I'm not confident in amoled being able to last me the 2 years I want a phone for, but just unsure movie watching will have the same wow factor on ultra that amoled has. Will try and find somewhere that has both in stock to compare.
Out of interest where did you buy your ultra? I'm in NZ too.

eBay
cost me $720 NZD (saving about $100).. however you'll have to ask the seller to mark it as a gift, or customs will sting you about 150-200$
I'm a movie junkie... Literally thousands of 1080p movies. each flight i watch one on my Ultra, and its perfect. Looks great!!

Are you getting one?

It's pretty clear that the Galaxy Alpha is not being positioned "above" the Galaxy S 5...it's just different. It's smaller, much thinner, but has a lower resolution display (720p vs 1080p) and a smaller battery (1860mAh vs 2800mAh).
So who is this phone for? Would you consider it over the Galaxy S 5, or even the Nexus 5/HTC One M8 for that matter?
Sound off! :victory:
Nope although I love that form factor it lacks some of essential features such as full HD and SD card support.
Also I think the price tag is way too high for the mentioned features.
The mentioned one's aren't alternatives I'll be waiting for the g3 with the snap Dragon 805 maybe they are going to release a smaller one too
The phone is for iPhone users coming over from Apple and direct compression for the z1 compact.
I personally think this is the best looking Samsung phone ever and I want it baaaaadddddd, I know the 720p screen and tiny battery are major drawbacks for most people but I can deal with it, I am by no means a power user. I just think its a great looking powerful phone that's perfect for me I just really hope it has some sort of development here

"B***h, please", you tell those "most people". I challenge your eyes to see single pixels with pixel density above 300 ppi. Also, the less pixels to push around = the GPU has it easier = it's easier on the battery... and battery is STILL bigger than any iPhone battery to date. And with the coming of L, battery life is expected to rise even more.

Considering this is using the Exynos 5430 using 20nm, it should have have battery life between the 801 and 805 if it was 1080p/1440p. if it's only 720p This device will last more than a day easily.
For that reason alone I'll be picking it up. and the fact I hate QHD on phones.
I would get one only if i dont have to throw a extra penny on xchange wid my 1month old nexus 5...
Comparing it to nexus 5
Pros
Slimmer
Metallic body
Better camera
Touchwiz ui (lol pro??)
Better gpu (yes its btr than a330)
Better battery (newer 20nm )
Cons
Touchwiz
Not full hd (i don't give a **** as i find display of 720p grand 2 to be same as that of my n5 wid naked eyes)
Expect late updates and poorer custom rom support.
I would make the sacrifice wid my n5 only if L doesnt makes it a overkill
Considering @svetius ' interest in alpha i guess he would get one tooo...

Ummm... me. I'm trim and of average height, not tall or big-boned, etc. I don't have huge hands. I wear 501s much of the time. The S5, G3 and One M8 are a bit too large for my pocket and for one-handed use. A phone is like a sidearm; while the zealots always want bigger and more powerful, if it's inconvenient to carry or use, and so you don't, it's no good even compared to an old flip phone.
But... the Alpha lacks a microSD slot, so it actually fails my requirements. Don't tell me you're selling me a Porsche - small, powerful, expensive - and then cut out the top gear. Charge me another $100 and put in the top gear, and call it a Porsche Xtreme or something silly like that.
As per a report it costs $689 dollars...
Plz throw it in the dustbin ...i am happy wid my sexy nexy...:silly:
I'm interested in getting it. The lack of a microSD card slot (and the price, too, I guess) is a bit of a bummer but who knows...

People say that QHD displays are just a gimmick but my g3 is hella crisp and as for battery life its fantastic, easily last all day.

No SD card support..... I'd rather get the G3.
I will get one, if the battery is good enough.
Alpha is almost there

Yes. I am in a similar situation -I am what you would call a Power User and need the Phone and nice
Camera for Business but am athletic, active and need the smaller form factor.
I want an Alpha Pro which is thicker with a larger Battery and Larger Camera Sensor like Note 4 ,SD Card for $ 100 more.
Alpha is a fashionable Device.
Alpha Pro would be for Note 4 types who don't want a huge phone.
The "Thinness Race" is surprising to me - I would MUCH prefer a thicker phone with SD Card and larger Battery and less breakable.
This size about 5.2" Tall with 4.7"
screen is perfect for me- and this Camera will be very good for Interior Designers , Real Estate Pros, Artists etc. not replacing a DSLR, but very useful.
Larger screens to me are impractical to carry and more likely to break, but I love the power of a Laptop in my pocket.
The Alpha is close.
The Sony Z3 Compact is close.
I prefer a removable Battery.
If Devs can create an APP that allows direct Storage to USB Stick ,
I could live without SD Card.
Two to Five Millimeters thicker and the Alpha Pro could be the Flagship Compact.
Remember you put a Rigid Case on a 5.6" Tall S5 and it's large and still fragile.
Put a rigid case on the Alpha and it's still pocket sized and less likely to break .
I don't know why it needs to be only 6.7 mm thick and 4 ounces-lol.
Give me the thicker Alpha Pro- a Device I am making up in the hopes it happens....
720p on 4.7" is decent. Even iPhone 6 doesn't have 1080p on their 4.7".
Hmmm I'm divided! I just had the S5 mini for a few days, and the screen on that one is bad. I meen the 720p resolution just doesn't cut it! Even thou the screen is small. It's just as bad as the S4 Mini. You can't read small fonts or read Web pages without zooming.
Soooo....... Does the Alpha has the same problem? I would guess. Even bigger screen with the same resolution. I hope I'm wrong and that Samsung just used a sub par display in the S5 mini. But I'm sceptical of course.
Also not sure if I want to live without the brilliance of a IR blaster in my phone. I use it everyday.
And then finally there is the potential issue about the battery size. Maybe it will be fine, if Sammy has optimized the Alphas HW correct.
So bottom line, I really want to get one, but I'm not to sure! LOOOOOOVE the esthetics!
Should be getting mine this coming Saturday, but stuck deciding what colour to go for...

I get what your saying I thought about it too, but something draws me to this device it just looks good and I think its a combination of the thinness and metal frame, anything thicker here I think would detract from its appeal. As long as I can get from 5am to 11pm with some juice left if I need it im happy
No but I would have if a) I was an at&t customer rather than t-mobile customer (for an on-contract deal) or b) it wasn't $192 more to import than the Xperia Z3 Compact. Who knows, if their resale values converge, I may end up having a green Alpha.
I like the style of the phone and hope Samsung uses this as the inspiration for all of their android devices over the next 6 months. I hope the phone sells well as the future of powerful sub 5" androids depends on this and the Z3C succeeding. I really look forward to seeing a January 2015 Tab Alpha 8.4 with the corners like this (and a snapdragon 810 or intel Broadwell). Similarly, I hope the Alpha sets the stage for a different direction for Samsung's phones (Android 5.0 should be more power efficient in a way that makes smaller batteries more viable).
The Alpha is coming to AT&T this Friday
The Alpha is coming to AT&T this Friday ,
And I'm getting one. I'm looking forward to the form factor, but I especially like, that it is not as huge as most phones out there and still has decent specs. I really wish I could have it all. Until then, I'm looking to have a new toy.
In my eyes, The Galaxy Alpha is Samsung’s most beautiful phone ever. Much more beautiful than the galaxy s5, but the size of its 1,860mAh battery worries me. In conclusion, I will choose the HTC M8 as my next flagship phone.
I sold my S5 for the Alpha a couple of days ago and don't regret it at all! It's a small and very powerful phone and probably one of Samsung's better in many years IMO ☺
