[Q] Steps to flash FXP CM10 ROM. - Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini, Mini Pro, Xperia Pro, A

FXP said:
HOWTO
Install instructions:
1. Install a Recovery (there are some around this forum)
2. Flash Rom
3. Flash gapps
4. Wipe (only required 1st time)
5. Flash kernel (fastboot flash boot boot.img)

Hope I'm not making a fool out of myself..
But, why are the instructions in that order?
The normal way to go is:
Flash kernel > factory/cache partition/system/dalvik cache wipe > Install the ROM > Install any .zip (fixes, addons, apps) > Reboot.
Is there any specific reason why the steps mentioned by the OP are in this order?
Thank you!

Not too sure, I have a slight feeling they messed up when writing it all down. But kernel is always first. After kernel dont boot the rom, just power on and head to recovery. Full wipe, format system, install rom, install gapps, full wipe and wipe dalvik cache, then reboot and watch the magic.

It doesn't matter, if you have recovery in previous ROM you can flash new ROM first in old reco and then flash kernel in fastboot.

May be the answer lies in here..
hmnk said:
Ok problem solved..
build.prop error means I have to use a Kernel that doesn't verify name in build.prop..
So I tried expeacer's MIUI Kernel(Extended stock kernel) and I was able to install CM10..
This info was courtesy of metalrawk
This could possibly be the reason why FXP instructed to flash the Kernel after ROM installation

Can't install CyanogenMod 7. Stuck at Samsung screen.

So, I've been trying to install the Cyanogenmod for 2 days without success...
This is what I've been doing. Tell me if I do something wrong...
-Start with stock KE2
-Flash CF-Root wich also contains CWM
-Factory reset / Cache wipe
-Put cyanogenmod .zip on the phone
-Boot into recovery
-Select install .zip from sdcard, and I select the zip
-Phone says install succesfull (the install just takes like 3 seconds, is it normal?)
-I go back to the previous menu and select reboot phone
It gets stuck at the black "samsung galaxy s2" screen. I left it for more than 20 minutes that way. Nothing happens.
I just power it off and re-flash a stock firmare via odin...........
This happens with both the stable and the nightly cyanogen mod builds.
Could you help me please?
1) boot into CWM recovery
2) Flash CM7 zip
3) reboot into recovery again
4) flash CM7 zip again
5) wipe data/cache/dalvik cache (you will lose all your app data, but not pictures/media/etc)
6) reboot and wait for it to boot, upto 10min.
Why dont you just flash and cf- root stock rom then thru cwm just install the rom? easy and works, atleast for me it did, got back to stock thu , its better after you freeze all bloatware..
hope it helps

So it works? Dunno, it was something todo with differences in the CF-root CWM recovery and the CM7 CWM recovery and busybox.
If you'd bother to read the instructions for flashing CM (which you clearly didn't, else you wouldn't be asking this question), they're pretty clear about the requirement to flash the rom twice. The why is irrelevant. The simple reality is in order for it to function it needs to be flashed twice.
If you haven't already, do yourself a favour and flash the original stock firmware that was on the phone when you bought it before you end up trashing it :-/

[Q] Taking the plunge tomorrow with CM9...

Want to make sure I've got the procedure down. I'm currently running the latest stock rooted (but not unlocked).
Let me know if this plan looks right or if you see problems or have recommendations...
Edit: Included two wipes as per Joker's instructions
1) Backup apps and data
2) Unlock
3) Install romracer's latest CWM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16654262&postcount=1)
4) Make backup (or two)
5) Boot into recovery
6) Go to Mounts + Storage -> Format system
7) After format, Wipe data / factory reset
8) Install CM9
9) Wipe data / factory reset again
10) Install CM9
11) Install gapps
12) reboot
Did I miss anything?
Should I then install the latest 1.40 OC kernel? Edit: Looks like no, custom kernel built in. Thanks roundeye
Last I knew, jokers cm9 had an oc kernal with it, but in either case don't install a blur/cm7 kernal on cm9.
As for your steps, double check the first post in jokers cm9 thread because I believe you have to flash twice or something along those lines to get cm9 set up properly with its installer/backup scripts. Otherwise looks good.

Awesome thanks... I did see something about flashing twice. On his post, he lists the steps as:
WIPE
then flash
wont boot
wipe and flash again.
also wipe between versions.
did i mention to wipe

So I guess I go all the way through step 8, then repeat steps 7 and 8 again? then do 9 and 10?
Here's Joker's explanation for needing two wipes:
there are scripts built into cm9 that copy certain gapps over to cache and then restores them to system. if you are coming from gingerbread this messes a few things up. so to fix we wipe system, data, and cache so the script cant work the first time around. then we wipe and flash again letting the script work.

Don't do what I did: Forgo unlocking, and flash gapps and cm9 at the same time
Haha I'll keep that in mind

what he is trying to say is that you should flash the kernel AFTER you flash your ROM
the ROM you chose is [CM10][Jellybro] i9100 Nightly Kangs, yes?
anyway..
here is what you should do
1. flash your rom
2. flash gapps for cm10
3. flash a kernel [an example of which is Dorimanx Kernel]
if you are still confused on some terms, please refer here
I hope this helps
EDIT:
you should root your phone first
You know, after flashing a new rom booting may take some more time, at least a few minutes. Have you been waiting enough time?
First, check md5sum of ROM [what Saywhatt wrote a few posts back]
a. If you are no longer in recovery modes then you can get a kernel [tar file] Flashing with Odin.
If your phone then starts normally, then flash the ROM you want through CWM.
*** wipe data / wipe cache / wipe Dalvik cache / format system in mounts and storage / flash ROM from sdcard***
b. If you can get into recovery mode, not flash with Odin, but do these same steps;
**** wipe data / wipe cache / wipe Dalvik cache / format system in mounts and storage / flash ROM from sdcard***
PS. If it fails in step a first flash stock ROM with Odin
sorry for my bad english

but 1st just installl gapps from link abobe & see if all is fine may
