First time rooting + flasing Rom (CM 9 or 10?) - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all,
I'm happy with my Tab 10.1 but it can be sluggish and so I decided to root it and install some kind of rom.
For rooting I found this guide on here which seems pretty simpel and useful.
But now comes the real question how do I proceed after this to instal a rom. Which one do I choose?
Is CM10 stable enough for me to try it, or should I go for stock 4.0.4?
And is there a proper guide on how to instal this?
Thanks

Okay, I think I'll try CM10, so I guess I should use this one: http://droidbasement.com/db-blog/?p=2749
I guess I'll find a tutorial on youtube on how to instal this with odin.

Error while trying to flash to JellyBean
About a week ago I flashed my P7510 (Wi-Fi) with this rom cm-10-20120728-EXPERIMENTAL-p3, I had all kind of issues, screen rotation, on the lock screen stating its charging while the battery stated its discharging even connect to the wall, etc.
I was able to go back to the backup I took before I flashed the tab, but now every time I try to flash the tab to a newer rom I get the following error:
Assert Failed: Getprop (“Ro.product.device”) = =”p4wifi”
Getprop (“Ro.product.device”) = =”p4wifi”
E: error in /SDCARD/ 31-07-12-13-30-jellybean-alpha-p4wifi-sig
Status 7
Installation aborted.
After doing a wipe of the cache and data I also get the following error:
E: unknown volume for path [/sd-ext]
Can anyone help me?
Thanks in advace.

Are you flashing with Odin or CMW recovery ?
Can you send the content of build.prop in /system folder ?

I am in the process of pulling my data (15 gig of movies) for a factory reset.
I used odin to root and I am using cmw 6 to install the rom.

I went with the UK ICS rom, seems to be working fine.

Otherwise you can follow this I RECOMMAND YOU CM9 MORE STABLE THAN CM10:
- Make a new download of the ROM from pershoot droidbasement
- Download the last CWM (recovery file)
- Download Gapps from goo.im
> Copy ROM and Gapps on the Tablet
> Flash the CWM with Odin 1.85 and USB cable (In PDA field)
> Boot in recovery mod (YOU SHOULD MAKE A FULL WIPE / FACTORY at this Step if you have backup of your datas otherwise tablet should freeze at boot animation)
> Choose install zip from sdcard
> Select the zip ROM and confirm the update
> Choose again install zip from sdcard
> Select the gapps zip and confirm update
> Return to the first menu of CWM and reboot system
Enjoy !

Thanks, but I kinda like the UK ICS for now, may be in a week or two of fooling around with it, I'll try Jelly bean again.

Yes i understand stock ics is good too
But as i say at the begining of my post i recommand cm9 for a best user experience
See you later ...

Which ROM you choose really is up to you - that's the beautiful thing about Android. Really, the sky's the limit! Well...what's available is the limit but you know what I'm saying
Do your research on the threads under Android Development - all the ROMs that are available for HC, ICS, JB, etc. Think about what YOU want out of your tablet...are you wanting to be on the cutting edge of development where you want an experimental JB that may have some bugs in it, or do you want something super stable and creamy smooth like a custom HC? Or, do you just want to speed up your stock ROM with a custom kernel?
There's SO much on here to explore. It's taken me two weeks just to get to a point where I'm comfortable flashing! I'm running CM10 right now but have been through a couple of other ROMs. Task650's Galaxy Task 14 is a great ROM too.
It's always a good idea to take a Nandroid backup once you go any further...for example I have a Nandroid backup of my unrooted image so to get back to stock I can just restore to that.
Basically when you're ready you just download the ROM of your choosing to your tab (and any required supplementary files - READ THE INSTRUCTIONS ON EACH THREAD VERY CAREFULLY). Reboot into recovery, take a backup, and follow the instructions given by the developer TO THE LETTER for installing the ROM. I highly recommend doing a full wipe of your device (cache partition, data/factory reset, Dalvik cache) before installing any new ROM to ensure you don't run into any issues.
You have all the support you need on this forum to resolve any issue you may have - just make sure you search the threads DILIGENTLY before asking questions, and post questions in the appropriate place - you should be fine!! GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN!!!

I completely agree with you ... very good post!
I said CM9 because the tablet is recent and it was nice to see the result with this rom ...

So if I root the device through this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1239185
and afterwards I use this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1787399
I hope I don't screw up the tablet

Yes you can also follow this with cm9 or cm10, if you take the recovery file in the same folder than the rom (you should test cm9 first because more stable ... but it's my advice)

i assume since it is rooted that you already have clockwork recovery installed.
hold power and vol down to boot into recovery
select wipe cache/factory restore
select install from zip
select the rom i showed you
reboot!
you must put the rom in the root of your tab first
use androzip to move it there

sorry but still a newbie here and i might get annoying to some peeps here but just very cautious on how this would work. so i'm going to ask question
factory restore - does this mean i'm going a clean up and unrooting my device? from the steps above? is the end product going to have the touchwiz update or is this the touchwiz update with a email sync problem? where does the touchwiz update happen? i didn't see that step above?
lastly.. is there a video i watch to see this in action.
galaxytabhacks.com is a bit slow on updating their video's on how to update a rooted GT 10.1 with touchwiz update...
thank you all for the current post and i'm sure that there are many users here that will appreciate this information.. (for all you do please post and cheer on the peeps that helped us out).

ok.. so go to clockwork recovery - i know how with that two options (icons by pressing those buttons)
make a backup - don't know how?
factory reset - i'll read up
install zip from sdcard - done it before
install - if i find it i'll select install
reboot - hopefully
so how does the backup work - any steps.. where can i find that option. thanks again for all these information..
in the main clockword recovery menu select back up and restore ...select backup
these are all in the main menu of cwr... dont worry about the wipe/factory restore just select it and do it.....make sure you put the new rom in the root of your tab first. just like you did with the root.zip when you rooted
put the new rom zip in your tab
boot into cwr
make a back up
do a wipe/factory restore
select install from zip
select choose zip
select the rom zip you downloaded and put in the root of your tab
install
reboot
this is from the first link i gave you
Here is the clockwork mod menu
- Reboot system now (self explanatory )
- Apply update from SDcard. (when you connect your device to your computer it will show up as tablet. The SDcard that cwm refers to is simply your device storage. Always make sure to copy install.zips to the root directory of your tablet storage.) You use this when applying an update for a specific ROM if that is what the ROM developer says.
- Wipe Data/ Factory Reset You should always do this before you install a new ROM or if you are having minor issues with your device.
- Wipe cache partition Think of this as the lite version of whats above . If you do above though it doesn't hurt to do this too.
- Install zip from SDcard Use this to install new ROMs.
- Back up and Restore
- Mounts and Storage use this to connect your device to your computer when in recovery mode. It is also possible to transfer files to your device while in this mode.
- Advanced What you are interested in here is something called dalvik cache, you want to wipe this too before installing any new ROM
- Power off
this is the main menu of clockwork recovery
backupand restore...wipedata/factory reset...install zip reboot are all on this menu

[Q] Flashing Custom ROM

Hi,
I have a samsung vibrant T959 with Eclair 2.1 in it. I haven't updated my OS yet , but rooted it using one click. Then to update my OS to Cynogen, I downloaded ROM manager (not premium as it doesnt support 2.1 ver). Then I tried to backup my current ROM using the option Backup Current ROM,but it just goes to recovery mode and has the option to reboot , delete casche etc. Then i just select the reboot option, nothing happens.. What is the problem? What more needs to be done. Is this problem due to the oldy 2.1 eclair I have? Please help. I m dying to update the OS..
Heres how to make a nandroid backup... Boot into recovery and go down and select something called "Backups & Restore" then go abd make a "Backup".
As a reference here's my guide to flash CyanogenMod 7/Miui... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1307637
Sent from my SGH-T959 (Samsung Vibrant)
Your guide doesnt mention anything about Rom manager at all. I have gone through a lot of guides and it mentions as :
1) Root it ( which i have done)
2) Titatanium backup (for apps backup ..done)
3) Install Rom manager (done)
4) Update to latest clockwork (clicked the first button and updated)
5)Backup current Rom .. I am stuck here.. as when i click it , it pops out a textbox for name of the backup.. then i set it.. then it reboots ... nothing is backed up.. Can anybody help me in this process??? Please..
OK, although I prefer making a nandroid backup by these steps...
1). Booting into recovery.
2). Go to backup and restore.
3). Then select backup.
...If you really want to do it through Rom Manager then you can try these steps and tell me how they work for you. Since it appears that your recovery may be messed up...
1). Load up Rom Manager.
2). Go into Settings.
3). Go down the menu and check off Erase Recovery.
4). In the Rom Manager main menu select Flash Alternative Recovery.
5). After that Flash ClockworkMod Recovery again, that first button.
6). Reboot.
7.) Try making a backup again.
...Lastly, Rom Manager isn't necessary to flash a rom or to make a backup of your current rom. The backup feature in the CWR menu does the exact same thing just to make that clear. Now when it comes to flashing Miui/CM7, I again refer you to my guide if you get stuck...
Hope everything works out for you & welcome to xda-developers!
I didnt find the options you mentioned for ROM manager. So I am going for Nandroid backup.
I needed to confirm on the following steps:
1) I m skipping steps 2 and 3 ( FLASH BACK TO STOCK (2.1 Eclair) and Download mode)
2) I downloaded your 2.3.9 MIUI link and ODIN .
3) Do I need to follow step 6 abt Get CWR ? Overstock Kernel ? Is it that only after installing this , I would be able to make a bakup of current ROM? I have already flashed clockworkmod recovery which shows 2.5.1.2 in ROM manager. So i though this step would not be necessary.
And when i tried to go to recovery mode, there were only the same four options ,
a)reboot b)reinstall packages c)delete cache etc.. So i googled for this problem and i saw in xda wiki which said to select reinsall packages. So is it correct?? I really dont want my phone to brick... So i may be questioning too much..

This is stock recovery. If you are using Rom Manager, make sure it is installed correctly. There is a link in my signature that you can download the custom recovery. Download it, put it on ther insteranl sd card and label it update.zip Make sure it is the only thing labeled that.
Boot into recovery, scroll down to Reinstall Packages and hit it. It will cycle through. Scroll down to Reinstall Packages again and hit it again. It will cycle through again and your stock (blue) recovery will change to custom (green) recovery. From here you can flash your ROM.
Before you go further and we explain something that is not needed, what ROM are you trying to flash?
I have been trying to flash MIUI.us_vibrantmtd_2.3.9_Eng_Deo_ZipA_Signed.zip. Currently I have eclair in my vibrant
Ok i downloaded update.zip, clockwork mod from your signature.. I put it in SD card. Clicked reinstall two times and now I have in green color mode.
1) Here again, theres a option for apply sdcard:update.zip.. do i need this?? I dont need to select it right?
Now I need to
Please confirm the steps below to flash
First i should select backup and restore then after the backup is done , i need to follow the steps below.
1)wipe cache partition
2)advanced- wipe dalvik cache
3)wipe data factory reset
4)install zip from sdcard
Am I correct?
Ok then. It should work for you hopefully.
BTW make sure you are flashing a Vibrant ROM. Iknow it says Vibrantmtd in the .zip but just make sure (there are different versions of the Vibrant out there-ATT [Captivate], TMo [Vibrant model # SGH-T959], Verizon [Fascinate], TMo4g [Vibrant 4g model # SGH-T959v]). I did a quick search and I could not find a 2.3.9 ROM in the dev section. I don't use MIUI so I may not be looking in the right place.
If your recovery goes from blue to green then you should be able to start at Step 7 in N00b_IN_N33D's guide. Good luck and happy flashing.

Yes but check your ROM OP to make sure.
My model is Vibrant model # SGH-T959 .. how do i know if the 2.3.9 supports mine or not.. Couldnt find any info in google (I m too eager to update my OS so not googling much )
My backup is complete and I am about to follow the other steps. So when i install the zip file, if I get any errors, I can always restore my previous ROM .. right?
Yes you can always restore your back up, although not sure why you would want to restore 2.1 stock eclair since you know how to Odin back to stock anyways.
Again, since I do not use MIUI, I am unsure about what ROMs there are and like i said, I just used the simple search bar and couldn't find anything 2.3.9 in our forums. I can suggest anything from 360 productions, as they are supported well and the Devs are on here a fair amount of time.
Maybe before you get flash-fantastic, you should think about what you want out of your ROM and then read some of the OPs. There are plenty of 2.2s with everything working, a fair amount of 2.3.Xs with all the theming that comes with MIUI but also battery drain and memory leaks. And then there are 6+ flavors of ICS (4.0.3) ROMs that you can choose from (I have a guide on installing these if you need it).
OPs on all will tell you what works and doesn't and also the features of that ROM. If you really want MIUI, I suggest you PM N00B_IN_N33D and get his input.
Installation is complete , kinda seems a bit slow.. but what amuses me is I did not have to do the following steps mentioned by noob :
It should start flashing and then enter a bootloop (Vibrant [Splash Screen] > Galaxy S Cyanogen(MOD) > CWR > Repeat). After it does this loop a few times do a battery pull.
Reboot into recovery, which will now be blue (Hold both volume buttons and power. Release power once the Vibrant logo is up).
Go to “install zip from sd card”, select zip from sd... Go and find the MIUI ROM you put on the sd card and flash it again.
This time it should successively install.
Go to "advanced", and select "Fix Permissions". Once it has finished fixing permissions go down and hit "++Go Back++"
Reboot your device.
Do not touch the phone for 5-10 minutes after it has booted... Do Absolutely Nothing! This helps clear any possible bugs.
Is it required??
And then there are 6+ flavors of ICS (4.0.3) ROMs that you can choose from (I have a guide on installing these if you need it).
could you provide me the links to it. Thanks

I assume you are talking about this. It is not required but is always a good idea to do. It lets the ROM settle down and any RAM tweaks initiated, different system scripts to finish running,... What is 5-10 minutes if it will save you all kinds of trouble in the future.

Sure. You can go here and read all about them. Note that some of these are advanced, experimental, Beta/RC status. So you will want to read them and do some searches before you ask your questions b/c you'll get flamed for sure if you don't.

Flashing Slim ICS

I have been trying to flash Slim ICS on my SGS2 for over an hour without success.
What happens is that when i choose the base zip it always says no zImage found and simply stops trying.
I've followed the instructions carefully.
Phone is rooted, CWM installed properly, Wipe/Format prior to flashing, files placed in external SD root, downloaded the correct files from Slim ICS website.
After the first failed attempt, i googled and searched all over XDA Forums but nothing worked.
I've tried flashing directly from the CWM Recovery Menu and the APP itself (Flash Kernel).
What i am doing wrong?
Currently my phone has the LPG firmware from the official firmwares thread.

hey dude try placing the Slim ICs zip file on ur internal sdcard then reboot 2 recovery and from there choose install zip from internal sdcard and flash and see
where're u coming from?
I've done successful for my just first ROM flashing experience when upgrading SGS2 from GB 2.3.3 to Official ICS DXLP7 with Odin 1.85 & now i've Slim it by Krarvind Rom..
I dunno if ur phone is coming from GB or ICS
If from GB better flash it w/ Odin 1.85 first w/ official ICS ROM (get it from Sammobile.com), wipe all data (cache, dalvik, factory & battery stat) - format system - then just can flash from CWM w/ Slim ICS
#don't forget2press thanks#

As already stated try placing the base on your internal SD as I don't know what version of CWM you have but some have issues with flashing from the external. You can't use the CWM app to flash the ROM as a kernel as it is not the same and there is no zimage included as AOSP ROM's are different and use boot.img for the kernel.
Once you have the base, I9100 essentials and Slim Gapps on your internal SD, boot into CWM and do the following:
1. Wipe data/factory reset
2. In mounts and storage - format /system
3. In advanced menu - Wipe dalvik
4. Find your base.zip on your internal SD and flash that
5. Repeat step 4 again as it doesn't flash first time
6. Flash essentials.zip
7. Flash Slim Gapps.zip if you want all the important Google apps
8. Reboot to system
That should be it and you shouldn't have any issues. If you do have issues then it may be bootloader related as newer ICS bootloaders sometimes have issues flashing CM9/AOSP ROM's. Hopefully you don't have that issue though.

No worries just happens that I'm the S2 beta tester for Slim ICS hopefully all will go well for you. When you're all set up don't forget to check out the feature guide which gives you an overview of the main features of the current and next version coming soon (link in post 2 of the thread or my sig).

Hello people
I recently tried installing CyanogenMod 10 on my intl Galaxy Player 5.0.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2077671
Some things about my phone:
I recently rooted it and i am able to enter download or recovery mode, i have the intl model and im currently running:
This ROM:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1623529
And this KERNEL:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1414565
Everytime i get an assert failed error (yes formatting does not help.....) and when installing the kernel within the thread i bricked my phone....
I was able to recover it but i dont wanna brick my phone again so any help and/or detailted instructions how to get that rom installed would be appreciated.
When i was trying to flash, thought it was with Odin. My programme crashed upon NaNDwrite....
Thanks in advance, hope someone can help me out!

Umm, if I'm understanding correctly, you installed the ROM- CM10, that is- and/or kernel via Odin. CM10 and the Mercurius kernel are zip files (.tar, .pit and the like are for Odin, not zips...if I understood correctly).
You want to place the ROM and the GAPPS zips on your actual SD card. Make sure the SD card is working properly. Reset and go to CWM (Power+Vol up).
Then, accd to the instructions on the CM10 page:
"Installation:
Reboot to CWM
Make a Nandroid (optional, but recommended)
Format /system if you had a different GApps package installed
Install ROM
Install GAPPS if you just formatted /system
Wipe data/factory reset if you are coming from Gingerbread
Reboot
??? (wait a while...)
Profit"
I'd say make a backup before doing any of this, but I'm assuming you're beyond that point....But before going on to CM10, it might be a good idea to recover your device first and back it up. Maybe flash a GB rom via CWM or Odin before proceeding to CM10, making a backup just in case...
Ok

Just flash CM10 kernel zip
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2109674
from CWM5 and then reboot CMW and you will have CWM6..then just install CM10 rom.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
would he have to flash the kernel first, though? I'm unfamiliar with rjs, but am assuming that rjs version of CWM would be identical to entropys version of CWM, which means that he could just flash the CM10 ROM since it has the kernel baked in.
When I upgraded from Chip -> CM10, I just flashed via CWM, upgrading both the ROM and CWM in the process.

i used rj's kernel and had to go from GB to ICS to JB or else i would get an assert error

I remember Dkonzig mentioning this, that the path to JB was through ICS, but for my US device, I just flashed directly to GB. I remember another Int'l GB user who flashed directly to JB and was fine. this is peculiar.
so two methods to choose from, I suppose.

[GUIDE]/[Q] Stock i9100 to CM11 M11

Hi All,
I recently updated my stock i9100 to CM11 M11 and I want to check if I have done all the steps correctly or if I have missed any steps out.
I first copied these four files onto a micro sd card:
PhilZ-cwm6-XWLSW-XEU-5.06.1-signed.zip
If you are following these instructions then use the correct PhilZ kernel for your stock kernel version. This is explained in the linked post.
ClockWorkMod Recovery v6.0.5.1 - Recovery_CWM_6.0.4.7_I9100.zip
Cyanogen Mod 11 M11 - cm-11-20141008-SNAPSHOT-M11-i9100.zip
Google Apps (Small) - gapps-kk-20140105-signed.zip
Then I:
Boot into stock recovery (volume up+home+power)
Install PhilZ-cwm6-XWLSW-XEU-5.06.1-signed.zip
Reboot into Philz recovery
Do a full Backup including the Preload folder by using the Custom Backup feature
Install ClockWorkMod Recovery v6.0.5.1
Reboot into CWM
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache partition
Advanced>Wipe dalvik cache
Mounts and Storage>Format /system, Format /cache, Format /storage/sdcard0, Format /boot
Install cm-11-20141008-SNAPSHOT-M11-i9100.zip
Install gapps-kk-20140105-signed.zip
Reboot and all done.
Optional Step: Flash a newer modem,
Download XXMS4 modem - modem_XXMS4.zip
Copy above zip file to SD Card
Boot into CWM Recovery and flash the modem zip file
Reboot
I found that the above newer modem slightly improved call quality and mobile download speed.
Note: Do not change RIL.
Have I done everything correctly? Have I missed anything?
I do have two issues,
When I tried - Mounts and Storage>Format /preload - it didn't work. I can't remember what the error was but it woudn't format the preload in CWMR
Memory only shows up as 791MB in About Phone.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much!
You did well. More than enough.
No need to format partitions, so just ignore the error.
Memory reported is usable memory. It is ok.
Have fun with the new rom.

Thank you for the reply svbarbosa.
I had been putting off installing a custom rom and living with my laggy stock because I thought it would be tricky to install CM11, turned out it was quite simple one I figured out the correct instructions.
I'd advise anyone it give it a try!
When you have time give AOSP NeatRom a try. Is is based on Slim Rom and is the one I use.
Here is the link: [ROM][Sep 25][4.4.4] I9100 AOSP NeatROM.
Happy flashing...
Is it easier (and just as good) to use CyanogenMod Installer to install CM on the i9100?
I made a question yesterday, and would appreciate it if someone could help me:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...import-sms-t2903491/post55985155#post55985155
Thank you guys.
@oldgalaxy hey, just got that i9100 device from my friend with all stock and laggy... ?
Your question was already an answer for me. I always prefer oldschool ways though they are harder. Followed your steps and... voila... Now I'm fast and stable. ??
But I was kinda curious whether it is really easier to install CM with their installer app. ?
Thanks man...

Thank you @LeroViten, I'm glad that those steps also worked for you. Also now that you have confirmed that it worked for you I am also happy that I have done things correctly, so thank you for that!
Not too sure about the CM installer, but I didn't use it because I wanted to be sure of all the steps I am doing because of the i9100 kernel bug that can hard brick the phone.

Hi,
I also just got a laggy SGS2 from a friend of mine.
And I want to reset/flash the phone in order to give it to my mother, which ROM do recommend CM11 or any other ROM (MIUI ?) ?
I would prefer to have something stable.
For CM, I saw that the last stable img was for CM10.
Thanks in advance.

I've been using CM11 M11 for the last 3 days and have found it completely stable with a slight improvement in battery life over stock.

I don't have experience of any other ROM, but I'd definitely recommend CM11 M11.

Thanks for the message @ghosty81d! Glad it worked well for you.
An additional optional step I recently did was to flash a newer modem (don't change the RIL).
I found this slightly improved call quality and mobile download speeds. The modem I flashed was XXMS4.
i have good signal and pretty ok call quality, however, it heats up moderately when using the internet..near the camera, i think i had this problem on stock rom also..signal is good full bars outside. but i wud give the modem a try n I'm completely noob on this topic..what is RIL and how do i flash this? can i flash using cwm? also can i back up my current modem? and changing modem cause any damage to phone? ty oldgalaxy, this m11 rom is good, no need pc, no need root to install it, perfectly fine procedure
WiFi always on on battery status
I'm new here and also decided to leave stock ROM how ever my battery is draining in 4 hours.... And I checkd battery status and WiFi is shwoing activity all the time but is of.... Can anyone help me?
Also if I turn the phone off and don't use the WiFi it doesn't show activity on battery status
Sorry for my english
Thanks
I am ready to install...
I downloaded all the required things to try your steps. I will try it tomorrow.
I just want to know if I need to upgrade the modem or leave it as it is? Kindly confirm.
Thanks,
Sadiq
