atrix/bionic lapdock compatibility with Amaze 4G? - HTC Amaze 4G

Anyone tried to fit the Amaze 4G on a lapdock? Can't find any posts via search
Those Lapdocks (eg Atrix Lapdock) go on sale for ~$50, basically a display, keyboard, battery and trackpad.
Below is someone's hack for raspberry pi on the lapdock.... since amaze 4G has HDMI out, only thing to do is to see if we can get the cables to fit properly, and the USB functionality(keyboard+trackpad) to work, and the software
http://www.theverge.com/2012/6/21/3105822/motorola-lapdock-hacked-raspberry-pi-rikomagic

So I did a bit of digging...
The Amaze uses a MHL connector (see wiki) which allows for access to HDMI and USB over one connector. The lapdocks seem to have two connectors to plug into the Motorola phones. It doesn't seem like a big issue to replace the cable from the lapdock with a MHL one that you could probably buy off ebay.
Double check which pin corresponds to which wires on the MHL and also on the USB and HDMI cable from the lapdock, cut the wires, re solder, heat shrink, close the lapdock back up....profit???
That's as far as I can tell regarding connecting the hardware the phone. I'm willing to bet that the HDMI will output directly to the screen fine without any software adjustment. But I'm unsure about the keyboard and trackpad.
Thoughts?
I'd be willing to give this a try if there's interest.

from looking at the raspberry pi and other stuff(laptop/wii connected to the hdmi port), you'll get a "mirrored" display... the keyboard/trackpad depends on the usb connection/driver/OTG Kernel, dunno about that
Youll need
Lapdock: $20-$60 (i'd suggest getting the atrix/bionic versions, not the motorola 500 one)

MHL connector for HDMI: $10-$35
Official http://www.amazon.com/HTC-Adaptor-Jetstream-Tablets-Package/dp/B005LSOPN4
Unofficial, may need USB cable for power http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10833&cs_id=1083314&p_id=8675&seq=1&format=2
->I can't get any clear indication that the USB data from phone passes through to the USB connector on the MHL adapter
maybe some HDMI cables/connector (HDMI male from MHL connector to miniHDMI female on the lapdock)
I have a tablet and a netbook too, so don't think I'll be attempting this for now
the 35Whr battery(from googling), people say it can charge your phone a couple of times over(your phone's battery is 4Volts*2AmpHr = 8Whr)

I'll see if I can find a cheap one here in Canada.
It's a rather interesting concept.
It kinda reminds me of this.http://www.ubuntu.com/devices/android

Definitely interested in this, would be cool to have this setup.
Live and Die on this day....

went to a radioshack nearby, they didn't have it..
bascially, i would only get one if its around $20 (since you can charge phone with it, $20 for a large battery is worth it, though not for the laptop form factor)

The only docks I can get my hands on are $50+ from ebay. This idea is such a niche product...I'm trying to think of a time where this could be useful.

commute on a train/bus, could watch video on a larger screen while charging your battery
if we had the software to support it as well (like the ubuntu-phone posted earlier or webtop options), could compose email or edit code on the go...

Isn't that why we have laptops?

if you want to spend more than $200, a laptop
if you want just one device that has everything loaded, and customizable(via the lapdock), maybe a netbook or this lapdock
i guess that's why the Atrix Lapdocks are selling at a discount... the manufacturers couldn't find a good way to advertise this expensive device (MSRP is $300 or so)

it's available for $40 on bensoutlet

yes we do, via the ExtMicro / MHL port
http://androidforums.com/htc-amaze-4g/500285-clearing-air-mhl-hdmi-adapters-amaze.html
I heard that the Amaze 4G is picky about which MHL cable it accepts, and the kernel/android build on it must support HDMI out

[Q] Lapdock Just an HDMI Monitor? With Other Uses?

Since the lapdock has an HDMI in (for the atrix to output to the screen), would it be possible to hook up and output an xbox 360 with the correct adapters (like this)? Or is the HDMI plug just for use with the atrix?
Dude
F**king brilliant man I was at the att store the other day and when I yanked the atrix out of the lapdock(one of which I have ordered) it said NO HDMI INPUT. I bet it will work with a micro HDMI adapter....ordering from China asap, so expect it to be a month :S

If it warned against hdmi input, it actually might not work . It might be a sort of proprietary jack in order to trigger the webtop on the phone. Even though we can just enable webtop with an hmdi cable, it might not work the other way around. But it's worth a shot seeing as the adapters shouldn't be too much money.
it didnt seem that way, if I can dummy load the usb connector possibly by using my atrix, then the hdmi is free for the taking, and when i pulled it out of the dock it seemed like, when you unplug a computer monitor, when it says nothing connected, it seemed like that, I bet this will work

That adapter wont work, it would need to be a FEMALE micro and not a male micro which is what you linked to

still not right. The dock has a male mini connector, to make it work you need a full sized male to mini female cable. They don't make those, so you'll have to make one yourself.
Or you could use the full size male to mini male adapter along with a female mini to female mini coupler or "extender".

it is micro hdmi not mini hdmi
They exist
Last week I was working with my exporter and I noticed a boatload of new micro hdmi products, one of them was male and female adaptors, male to male, female to female etc, I guarantee it you guys they exist, and they also exist for micro usb, with which we can dummy load the shell into powering on with the phone if necessary. This will take maybe $6 worth of chinese parts, a month for shipping, and patience for the adaptors to arrive for an investigation. I'll try to order by next tuesday
O, dang it. I didn't realize i found the wrong adapter. I forgot that we would need a female adapter.

I look forward to hearing more about this.
If it would indeed be possible to use the laptop dock for such a purpose then I might be able to justify picking one up.
...it would then make a nifty portable DVD player too...
just get an inverter to run a blu-ray player in your car, make a $50 cable...
You guys have wayyyyyy too much time on your hands
(from a guy who doesn't own a gaming console )
However, as a proof-of-concept, it would show what the lapdock is capable of. Get a ATSC tuner with HDMI out and you would have a nice portable HDTV.
I am actually wondering if there is a way to put a touchscreen in place of the simple LCD (like Asus is doing with their prototype)
Pretty sure that the screen is going to shut off without the phone activating the display through the USB connection as well.
Good luck though, hope I'm wrong!

Which is why I will dummy load the microusb terminal in the dock with my atrix. I found the female micro hdmi part we are looking for! I'll put up more info ASAP, I'm a bit swamped ATM
It might attempt to sense an atrix via the microusb port. Perhaps a keep alive signal. But it will use the same proprietary protocols that all the docks use to trigger the correct mode.
Sent from my Motorola Atrix 4G on the network with the most backhaul, whatever that is. This post might have errors as I hate touchscreen keyboards.
Nice to see I'm not the only one that saw the no input message and thought to myself, HEY I CAN PLUG SOMETHING ELSE IN! Anyways, anybody get this working yet? I found an adapter on Ebay that should do the trick... But I guess I'm not allowed to post that yet... Take a look though, they do exist if you do not mind waiting for it to ship from China.
I think this just might work!! Sometimes when I plug in the phone I get a message on the screen "no hdmi input". And if this does in fact work, guess what. The atrix 2 will work with our "outdated" lapdocks haha

[Q] HDMI Adapter in Box?

Did anyone receive the HDMI adapter in the box for the AT&T Galaxy S II ? I read that it should be included but did not receive it.
Nope. Not in the AT&T box

Nope. It doesn't come with AT&T version. AT&T version, all you get is the phone, battery, ac charger, usb cable, $25 media hub (tv shows only), manuals.
The infuse comes with one. The galaxy doesn't included one.

curoius, do most newer tv's have MHL built in? or probably not?
all i can find when i type my tv's model number and MHL into google is.. my tv with some hockey info (NHL) hehe..
google is too smart for its own good sometimes.
Based upon what I've seen, you need a MHL adapter for the phone. Its just a little box that plugs into USB, and had a USB port on it for power input and an HDMI port. There's cheap out there, like this one.
I have an MHL adapter and it does work but you need to plug the power into the thing in order for it to do anything. My receiver has usb and hdmi on the front so that works for me. It would be nice to have 1 cable, but this works.
Unfortunately I believe that's the case with any MHL device. There's a chip inside that box that transcribes the MHL signal (coming over the 5 pin USB connector) to a full HDMI signal, and it requires power. It's not all that bad though, as you would probably want to be charging your phone while playing a video anyways.
Exactly it is nice it does have power. Unlike the ipad to vga dongle lol.
Eventually most of the high end TVs will have the MHL. You will still need the adapter but you will not need to power it. The TV will not only power your phone but charge it.
I pocketed the HDMI MHL adapter from my infuse when I returned it under the 30 day ATT trial... The screen was pixelated in my infuse in the top left hand corner so they were more concerned with my device being defective than me just not liking it and only asked me if the charger was in the box.

MHL adapter from monoprice!

Hey guys I found this mhl adapter on monoprice and it's $10.20. By far one of the cheapest out there. Also monoprice has great build quality on their products! Here's the product link http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=108&cp_id=10833&cs_id=1083314&p_id=8805&seq=1&format=2, and here's their video on it! Yep - that's already been discussed many times under the MHL adapter threads. There have been many reviews about that particular adapter - including mine.
Honestly - I have no complaints about my MHL adapter.

I do - it works well. You just have to make sure you're using the right app - beause they don't all look equally as sharp.
For example - Diceplayer looks better when playing video than the stock gallery app in my opinion.

I bought it when it went on sale a couple weeks ago for something like 9 bucks shipped. I wouldn't recommend it. The battery drains even when plugged in (which has to be plugged in to work). If you read the reviews monoprice actually responded that it only can input of 500mA which is only half of what the stock charger puts out but standard for USB ports on a PC. Don't know if its an MHL flaw or a monoprice adapter flaw but a 720p movie with the phone in airplane mode still managed to drain the battery in under 2 hours. You also can't manually change resolution although that's a limitation on the phone. This really isn't a problem as it defaults to 720p for most TVs but I did have it go to a really low resolution in a monitor.
Don't blame the monoprice adapter, that's a weakness with all mhl adapters. There was a guy who claimed his was charging, but checking the system settings showed he was limited to USB charging and not AC.
The key is not having other apps running or services you don't need. On an airplane, you should have gotten a much better discharge rate! The last time I used mine at a friends house to watch a 720p MKV, I had over 90% of my battery left. I figured I could have watched over 10 hours of video. If you're streaming, you will burn more battery obviously.

That's crazy ill have to try with a clean install. Also wish I could turnoff the backlight wwithout turning off the LCD. That would save some power. I though it might have been an MHL limitation but I have seen 1amp MHL adapters. That could just be the reseller making up specs they don't know. Really huge design flaw in my og Evo I could stream any content and it would still charge even with Bluetooth enabled. Shame you have to cripple the phone so much so it doesn't die on you.

Yeah, buy you had two connections into your phone with the OG Evo. The MHL adaptor will eventually (when tv's come with it) only need the HDMI cable and hopefully charge more than the USB does.

Didn't think they would.wrap it into a TV but if 500mA is an MHL limitation then it really wouldn't make a difference since the stock charger already outputs more than that and what the adaptot itself consumes.

Can you point me to any 1 AMP advertised MHL adapters?
Even if they work for other phones, this phone's funny. I have quite a few 2.1A chargers, both car and AC - and not all of them charge beyond USB charging rate. It seems one or two of the micro usb pins need to be shorted to charge our phone at a rate higher than 0.5A.

I just got this EBAY adapter - and I haven't had a chance to fully test it. It wouldn't work for HDMI out - so I thought it was defective, but I realized I haven't used MHL since I rooted my phone (olympus rom). I used my monoprice adapter and also wasn't able to get it to work, though it ran very well when the phone was stock. So I'll wait to review until I flash a new rom that actally lets me use the MHL adapter properly.
One thing that shows promise is that when I charge through the EBAY $6 MHL adapter, it shows up as AC charging on my phone. The monoprice shows up as USB charging. I've also confirmed that it definitely charges faster.
I'll still have to test whether or not it actually works - and if it'll actually charge faster IN USE. I'll let you guys know. If it does work and charge faster than the mono price adapter, I'll post here and start a new thread. Otherwise, I'll report back and apologize.
I updated to a kernel which allowed HDMI out and tested the new HDMI adapter. Visually, back to back with the monoprice adapter - the EBAY $6 adapter worked just as good. That is to say that the picture looked idetically sharp.
I then played a 42 minute 720P MKV through diceplayer - and my phone's charge increased from 66% to 70%. It's the first time I've seen that with an MHL adapter.
With this new kernel (Anthrax R13) - this MHL adapter now shows charging my phone as being via USB instead of AC. But next, I plan to play an identical video with the monoprice adapter - to see if my charge level increases or drains in use.
I'll start a new thread when I have the results, but regardless, at $6 - this EBAY cheapie has to be the best value yet.
Are there any other kernel/rom options that would support hdmi out to tv? Thanks
One thing you might want to consider if using this with the HTC dock, is that the Monoprice adapter won't fit well. You have to force the micro usb in. To use it in the dock, you need a micro usb adapter that has the micro end with a less bulky plastic enclosure. The curved side of the tip needs to be closer to the plastic edge. The adapter I got from eBay fits better, without forcing or bending. You could also try carving away excess material.

RAZR Dock Differences?

Hello!
I'm planning to but original dock for my RAZR, and I see that there are two versions of it. What are differences between them?
http://www.motorolastore.eu/pl/p_motorola_product.aspx?i=225118
http://www.motorolastore.eu/pl/p_motorola_product.aspx?i=225121
It bugging me, since they are looking the same but the second one is much more expensive. And description is the same.
Cheaper one has only one USB port for charging, another is equipped with hub and three USB ports. HDMI micro socket is in both models.
Ed. Ale bardziej opłaca się złożyć samemu =]
Also, The more expensive dock has a standalone Firefox web browser. I purchased the more expensive one and use a usb mouse and a bluetooth keyboard and it's like having a full PC on your TV through the HDMI cable. You could probably do the same thing with the less expensive dock if you have a Bluetooth Mouse and Keyboard combo but I am pretty sure you can only go into mirror on display mode vs the full webtop application. Either way, I think it would be a worthwhile purchase in my opinion. I enjoy using it.
Additionally I was told that the less expensive model does not include the mini HDMI cable. Not sure if that would influence your decision or not.
I'm just wondering. And I don't mean to jack the mans thread, but has a powered USB hub ever been successfully patched into the dock interface? If its easy enough I might try modding mine.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using Forum Runner
So, basically in more expensive model you can access Webtop, while in cheaper one, you can't, right? Or am I wrong and it's only USB ports and browser difference?
Also, lack of HDMI cable is no problem. I can get one easily xD
The one I have has no USB ports. It only has HDMI, Audio and a micro USB charging port. I'm just wondering if a USB splitter can be added some way?
Sent from my DROID RAZR using Forum Runner
@UrbanDroid
But can you acces Webtop App like on more expensive one? If it doesn't have Webtop app then it's not worth to buy it.
Also I have questions for other. Is it possible to attach normal USB hub to it and make it work like expensive dock? I mean, connect normal HUB with three normal USB slots and one microUSB for charging. Is it even possible without tearing dock apart? I know it's less stylish then buying expensive one, but unfortunatelly I can't afford it xD Life is brutal and stuff.
Webtop is in your phone, not the dock. The docks play some tricks with USB pins so the phone knows which dock it's in and which mode to activate.
People have used USB hubs to add devices to the RAZR, with or without a dock. The only caveat is that the hub must have its own power supply and you may have to make a cable to have it work. Google around for it.
The ICS leak (.211/OTA?, at least) will enable webtop without using a dock at all. Just plug in an HDMI cable and you're good.
Confirming. I've got the simple dock for free with the costco verizon deal recently. No mHDMI cable included. However the web top works the same through the dock as with the cable only (upgraded to ICS right away, so can't tell for GB, but who cares now, as JB is coming? ). Tinkering with the idea of installing a USB hub board inside the dock. Looks straight forward, just need to measure the inside compartment to get a proper hub for parts.

Second link isn't valid.
But I think it would be easier to buy an MHL adapter that you need to provide the HDMI cable. And then just plug in an HDMI to Composite cable. I haven't tried it. But technically, it should work..

Corrected link
You can't just plug HDMI cable(digital signal) to composite which is analog

That combination should work as long as you supply power to the MHL adapter to keep the phone charged while playing video.

If it doesn't work and you don't want the parts anymore, I'll tak'em off your hands.
With a converter box, it should work.
But for some reason, I've had luck with Digital to Analog connections. No idea why.
First off, stay away from that MHL adapter. With the actual "adapter" end being right on the hdmi side, you put a LOT of stress on the hdmi port with that, and hdmi ports are very easy to break. As stated above, get one that allows you to use your own cable.
Second, you cannot just get a simple cable to go from hdmi to component or composite, it just won't work. You need to use a downconverter, and those aren't very cheap. The link to the one you posted seems VERY suspicious, I personally wouldn't touch that with a ten foot pole. The cheapest downconverter I have seen that actually works cost 120 dollars. Personally, anything under 100 dollars I would stay away from.

for a 100$ you could buy a used flat screen with HDMI, yet small but serve its purpose.
Good luck with it.
I know tiger direct had cheap converters in Canada and the us.
Maybe before you buy it, check some local stores ?
You might get lucky.
