Small Apps Functionality - Sony Tablet S

Hi all,
Has anyone decompiled the new ICS browser/calculator/remote control apps to work out how the small apps function works? I have a couple of ideas for utilising the small apps, but I've no idea how the function is called or manipulated. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks

Dude I really appreciate your enthusiasm and would love to help you and all... I just don't know how. The only reason I say this is because not many people in this community like to respond to anything and leave people hanging. Didn't want to leave you hanging

Yeah, I figured that might be the case. The Development forum is depressingly low on activity, but just thought I'd check if anyone had any ideas.

I'm pretty sure the only Sony Dev links I've seen were pre-ICS, but if you remember where you saw it, that'd be awesome. I'll have to check it out.

There's a small app SDK download available it teaches you how to make a hello world app, Istanbul an official sont thing so google it

[Q] Steps to becoming a Rom Developer

I have no experience, but i'd like to learn how to make my own custom rom.
Does anyone know what i'd need for a Thunderbolt GB rom?
I've looked into it and read about Kitchens and how you need them, but don't fully understand.
I'd like to know if the community could help me out here.
I could google it and I have, but I don't get any results that are specifically for the Thunderbolt.
Please go easy on me. :/
I can't answer your question so I apologize for taking a spot in your thread but I don't see any reason people would be rude/harsh towards you especially considering you posted in the proper section! Good luck and hope to see a ROM from you someday!

the phone model does not matter really and you wont find anything specific for the thunderbolt.
Install Linux right off the bat... Dealing with Windows and using environments are a PIA.
Download apktool, kitchen, gimp, and your base ROM whether it be the GB leak or MR2. Read up on how the system works, various editing techniques, and suck up all the info possible. It really is a learning process, not really something someone can tell you how to do.
That's what I did/do to learn.

You do realize too that some people, no matter how hard they may try, are just not cut out to this type of stuff?
I'm not saying you can't do this, but just be aware that the end result may not be what you want it to be.

Ya, I remember back in my days in school when these people were in computer classes with me saying how cool it was to learn to program.
Half of them, while very bright, lacked a certain "ability" to grasp programming, shall we say.

[Q] Moving to AOKP

I'm currently rooted, but running stock ICS.
How do I get to AOKP without loosing my apps and their data safely?
I'm fairly comfortable with ROMs/rooting on my Droid phones. Just a little nervous with my spendy tablet.
Thanks guys.
Titanium backup. Oh and if you want AOKP, you might want to check another site for the latest version.
Thank you! XDA doesn't have the latest version? Wha?
Man I am soooo nervous to unlock.
Also I guess my next question is with AOKP updates. How do I apply those without wiping cache/data and all that every time like on my Droid?

Glad to see freedom of speech is still alive and kicking. Hehe. Not the only forum with that problem.
And I wasn't trying to be negative. I thought that XDA was THEE place to go for Android stuff. Am I wrong? Where would I locate the newer version? AOKP.co? Just don't wanna download from Uncle Jimmy's used Android ROMs or anything.
Thanks.

And you're ok with that? Wow....
Back on topic though... how do I easily update AOKP versions?
all I ever do when trying a new rom, is back up with Titanium Back up and also with Clockwork.
I install the new rom and see if its working fine. Then reinstall my apps and I am good. If all else fails, i restore to a back up on Clockwork
Of course I am ok with it. Those are the rules I agreed to. Do I think the mods are fair? It depends on the situation.
But simply put this is not a public board. It is a private board that the public at large may view and join as they wish. Grow up.

Yeah maybe its not a bad idea, it could be called 'Free Speech XDA Developers & Forums'
Sorry was hazying away from Topic while thinking about the freedom of speech thing.
But too many good devs and good people with great ideas get kicked out because many mods do not know how to not involve their personal feelings in their jobs as mods.

You are still having an issue understanding this.
You have no rights on this message board. This board is not in any way run by a government body and as such does not have to respect your rights.
If you want to test my assertion I suggest you try breaking a few of the rules and see what happens.
If you wish to go somewhere with no censoring may I suggest 4chan?
Congrats on finding what you were looking for.

All of what you said is the reality but it doesn't make it right either. This is why my involvement here is limited. There are certainly other places to have community, a little more "free speech", and get Roms.

It's this way on tons of forums out there. Someone becomes an admin, they think they rule the world and then it gets to their heads. Find a welcoming forum, and stick with it!
If you want to ban me for saying that. Go for it, I won't be stopping by here too often anymore anyways, just like many others. Just solidifies my views and quite honestly makes the XDA community look bad.
However I did find what I was looking for at a different site and the users there were very helpful and I was able to successfully get to AOKP, and they even helped me troubleshoot some other issues with CWM.
So I am sorry XDA, I've loved you for a long time, but there are much more welcoming places out there for Android Development.
And thank you for the users that did actually try to help me get to AOKP on XDA.

OpenDesign

Ok,i just came across this article and i have to agree that this idea sounds really awesome. The best features from various Carrier skins? Hell yeah!
For eg: I like this feature in TouchWiz which allows you to swipe on an entry in your call log and lets you either call or text that person. That would be a killer feature to have in Cyanogenmod IMHO.
Whats your favorite feature that you want to include? The official site already has a few listed out.
Oh,did i mention they also have an open call for developers to join them?
Check it out!

It is valuable enough..just that people to need to know about this and talk needs to go around regarading this topic..
I know its valuable. But it will be hard to discuss until development actually starts in full flow and they give some updates. Only then will we have some topics worth talking about. Let us see, site's up. Something should be announced sooner or later.

Oh boy...I just love it when people start saying
"I'm building a ROM", "I'm doing dev work", "I want to be a recognized developer"
Then I make suggestions and I get "That's too hard", "Do you have a download link" "Cn u teac me hw mak a custm kernel?"
Yet they are totally unwilling to actually invest some time into these things and LEARN it.
Guy's Rome wasn't built in a day, and your ROM isn't going to be either. Look around, read, SEARCH SEARCH SEARCH. Download other people's stuff not just to Kang it, rename/re-post it under your name, but to LEARN, to figure out how it works, so you can UNDERSTAND. This isn't like a store, where you walk in and go "I want one of those, and I'll take one of them, and please get me that, where can I find this, etc, etc." Make little modifications, tweaks on top of tweaks, and keep doing that until it's soemthing new, soemthing different, and THEN post it. But please don't limit yourself, to what is "Easy" or "Comfortable", it's not the way to get anywhere with real development work, much less in life. Put some time into it, and some effort. I really do wish you all luck, but you guys have to stop looking for the easy way to get some quick credit.
[/RANT]
@OP I know of zero performance modifications that you can do in XML, and if you are looking to use someone else's work and use that then start searching and make sure you ask before you use it.

He was being helpful, he is bringing up a attitude that is rampant here on XDA, namely the "cooking" of ROMs. There are WAY too many people who just cook a ROM in a kitchen and claim to have "developed" it. No, you just re-packaged somebody's work, it's not the same thing. I'm not saying it's useless, but it causes way to many "developer" wanna-be's that just aren't interested in actually learning something. Up above we posted suggestions and you responded with

That creates the impression that you aren't wanting to try any other methods for creating ROMs. If you were trying to say that you don't know smali, then maybe you should have said something like,

This is very true, I'm new to porting and I'm starting with porting so I can learn the ins and outs of a rom so at a later time I can learn to develop, even in porting I've had to back smali and make some edits to get things working so sooner or later you will have to as well.. I'm currently reading a begginers guide on java for android.. Google is my best friend and I'm trying to learn as much as I can because I have an idea of my 'ideal' rom.. I can't wait for someone else to do it so I can port it and I know it will never be the way I want.. I'm doing it mainly for myself and I hope one day I can share with others

Best thing to do is get on the good side of a dev and ask them to teach you, I had great help from some of the best devs on XDA, but as above its not something you can just learn easily, I already had a pretty good knowledge of Java and XMLs etc before i got a smart phone lol, If you stick to it then you should get somewhere, Java is a pain in the ass though, editing .smalis is probably the hardest thing for a new dev

Well then you shouldn't have started the thread, I'm not trying to "flame" by any means... but if you wanna add some performance settings and mods I'll give you some advice thewadegeek gave me, take a look at aokps or cm9 or whoever's git repo you feel has some similar features to those you wish to add and start there, you'll get a good understanding of how everything works... at that point it comes to the fine details and making sure everything works.. when you have issues at that point you then can ask for help on getting the fine details fixed since at that time you'll have specific issues that someone can help with

Android devices being key logged

Old but still an interesting read
http://www.ibtimes.com/articles/259568/20111201/carrier-iq-spyware-company-s-android-app.htm
omg
Thats soooo olddd omg. There is an app called carrier iq to tell if u if you have it. Most of providers have removed and almost every single custom rom has it removed. Dude this article is form december 2011.
That's old news. Like, really old. Look at the date on the article. Verizon doesn't use CIQ on any of it's devices. It may use something else, but so far we don't know of anything, so any claims otherwise are just FUD.
