Capacitive button Control in Helly Bean? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i think i have the right idea here. i installed the helly bean rom a couple days ago and absolutely love it so far, however the home, search, menu, back buttons all stay lit if a notification for txt or email happens while its sleeping. for further clarification in case some dont understand what i mean, say i hit the power button to go into sleep mode and someone send me a txt the phone plays the sound and lights the bottom 4 buttons like normal but once done the bottom buttons remain lit and dont turn off until i wake the phone and put it back to sleep.
any ideas on where to change this? or is it part of the rom

It is part of the ROM. It functions as a notification LED to let you know that you have a text/missed a call/etc. You shouldn't worry about it, it doesn't affect battery life.

You can turn off Notification Light in settings.

Capative Hardware keys not lit until u press in captivate key area in Helly Bean
Hi There,
I just flashed my cappy to the HellyBean ROM, and everything works great! Thanks for such a nice ROM.
While using it I found one small issue,It could be a setting issue which I'm unable to figure so please help me out.
When i'm using the phone, in gingerbeard, it used to light the bottom 4 capacitive keys(Setting,HOME,BACK,SEARCH) all the time so that I can press them when i'm using the phone in dark. But in Hellybean, those 4 LEDs are not lit when the touch screen is used, those 4 buttons are lit only when I press in the Bottom area.
Please let me know how to make them ON even when i'm using the touchscreen area?
Thanks,
Raj

This is the vibrant section not captivate but I think there is a setting in devil kernel configuration app. Don't know for sure which exact setting controls that but I think there's another setting in display, try both. I don't use any bln because of battery use, plus I'm no longer running HB on my vibe or cappy.

Can you disable the trackball LED?

I like to read in bed and often my wife falls asleep before I do. I can dim the screen without any trouble, but any time a physical control is activated (trackball, volume rocker, etc) the lights in the lower portion of the phone where the controls are light up REALLY bright.
Is there a setting or app to shut it off?
Are you talking about the keys?

Hi,
Go to Settings > Sound and Display > Notification Flash.
You can disable the trackball flash for certain notifications or you can disable them all and have the trackball flash disabled completely.

But he means the keys' lights. Will this also turn that off?? I know the title of the thread is a bit misleading
Turning the trackball notification off seems to stop the screen and button lights from coming on.
I've just disable the trackball notification for text messages, set my phone in standby and sent myself a text from another phone. The notification sound played but nothing at all lit up on the phone.
Disabling the notifications don't seem to have an effect. Every time I touch the trackball or any other button, the light right up
I also find the backlight of the keys on HTC hero pretty annoying. I can't believe that it's impossible to disable that damn light. There are only 6 buttons and trackball, are they really think that we aren't capable to use them properly?
I don't see what the problem is.
And my trackball doesn't actually light up unless I get a notification of some sort.
Just pressing any button doesn't make it light up at all.
So what exactly is the problem?

I don't know about European Hero, but on the Sprint's one, any time you're pressing a key or the trackball, backlight lightens up. It's damn annoying, and I don't know how to get rid of it.
First of all, I'm not a vampire. I don't often use my phone in the dark. And besides, there is always enough of ambient light from the screen.
So. My questions to HTC guys.
- Why the damn, stupid light?
- How could we disable it?
- And where is our firmware update?
The light is extremly nice :-D I love it, when you are in some loud places and your phone is not in your pocket you can see it light up :-D
If you don´t want that, just downgrade to a 1.8 firmware; there is a bug that the trackball won´t light up, well the firmware is freaking slow though.
BTW: An option to disable the light would be cool (there could be some scenarios where it´s not good to light up).
BB.

So, I'd have assumed that this is the software issue not hardware.
Now I'm sure. So it could be disabled somehow.
But how?

Thats one of the things I like about the Sprint Hero. I wish my Telus Hero Trackball would light up every time it was touched. It is an easy way to light up the buttons in the dark.

[App] NoLED - Use the AMOLED screen for incoming notifications

I saw the idea posted somewhere previously that instead of getting the capacitive lights on, we really should be putting the phone's AMOLED screen to work ! specially that it doesn't consume any backlight energy when displaying a black screen. So I developed an app that does just that, upon receiving a notification, it will display a black screen with a red dot somewhere in the left top corner. Ok, i really should put these in bullet points..
the application does the following:
1. When your phone receives a notification, it switches the screen on and displays a red dot somewhere in the top left corner. The location of this dot is random every time you receive a new notification. This will guarantee using different LEDs so that the same ones won't be burned out ! The reason why I chose red is because it uses the least amount of energy to display.
2. The app runs as a service, after installing, you'll need to lock the screen once and unlock it for it to activate. After this, the application should run automatically after a reboot.
3. To get rid of the red dot, the only key you can use is the home key. Using the capacitive touch buttons will do nothing, and so as clicking anywhere on the screen. Once your screen turns on, the notifications disappear and will not come up until a new notification sound is received.
I have also logged the touch drivers and saw that although I'm displaying a black screen and setting flags to not respond to touch messages, android is still receiving touch messages when you touch any spot on the screen. This, I imagine, consumes resources! So I disabled the touch drivers when the black screen is active. Pressing on the Home button should reactivate it. If your screen is unresponsive to touch even after the notification screen is dismissed, a simple restart should take care of it. Once you've restarted, you can uninstall the app.
Now the touchscreen drivers were a lot easier to mess around with. The sourcecode given by samsung helped me achieve the activation/deactivation of the screen. Things are not the same with the capacitive buttons. You'll notice that when the black screen is on, if you touch any of the soft buttons, they'll light up (although am suppressing them programatically). Am still analyzing the drivers to see if there is an easy way to disable these drivers too when the notification is on.
One more note, make sure the notification sounds that you choose for your different apps (Calendar, Gmail, Gtalk.. etc) are the default samsung notifications or the ones you placed in /sdcard/sd/media/audio/notifications
Any other sound notifications will simply not trigger the program to display the notification screen.
I just want to let you guys know that this is a beta app. Install it at your own risk.
Enjoy ! Comments and feedback will be appreciated

Thanks for the heads up, but after reading the thread I think I'll wait till it's been tweak a bit more.
That's a good idea, but if it's going to flash using the screen, why no take advantage of the fact that it's a SCREEN and flash an icon instead of just a little red dot?
For example, use the same system icons that appear in the notification bar when messages are received / calls missed, etc. And if you're worried about burning out pixels you could make it change location every minute or so.
Just my $.02
that was mentioned in the original thread... I think it is a good idea... I cant wait to see how this grows...
Does this require your GS to be rooted?

the idea of a full icon was mentioned, but just like a blinking led, the idea here is to keep the notification using as little power as possible. Not sure if the power usage would be more or less showing one pixel or a whole icon.
Obviously 100+ pixels would use more power than just one but the screen is very power conservative. I think it's at least worth a try to see if it really impacts the battery that much.

I have it on my phone atm, it's not rooted. Seems to be working fine.
doesnt work if you have No Lock installed too
Umm..i have nolock and it works fine. Try turning it off, then lock and unlock your phone, and turn it on again. Should work.

It was hurting battery leaving the screen on even though it was just red. I uninstalled it from manage applications and now my screen won't turn on once it is off, I have to pull the battery. Anyone know if doing a clear storage wipes the internal SD card?
+1 for icon notifications
If we can't have a real led, lets look cooler than all the other phones and have little icons of e-mail, sms, and missed calls. It would be nice.
and make them loook purrrrdyyyyyyy iphone-esque
Installed this today and so far so good. Sure it would look better with actual icons but if it saves me from having to unlock my phone all the time to look for new messages then I'm happy.

Not sure why this thread is not getting enough attention when there were so many people begging for a notification app to come out?
Thanks for making the app, will try it out soon. Will give feedback as soon as I get it.
Not working for me at all. Tried default sounds, custom sounds, with puzzle piece, without puzzle piece, etc. Even tried a reboot. Yes, the service is running.
Samsung Vibrant
EDIT: Just worked, but seriously took like 10 minutes before the screen flashed and the red LED started blinking.
I'm having a problem with it as well. I see it running, but it doesn't notify me except for the initial notification. Also it seems to just keep the screen on.
I'll keep playing with it to see off I can figured it out.

Capasitive Buttons Problem

Hey is anyone else having issues with the 4 buttons not lighting up properly, or at all. When I restart the phone its fine but as soon as I go past the locksxreen the buttons no longer light up until the next restart....
Is it just me or does it seem HTC didn't really take quality control into account with this device?

Those buttons use the light meter. Go to a dark room and turn on your phone and see if they light up.
No they aren't responding to light changes...
Capacitive buttons are all fine on mine. Haven't seen any issues. Only had it for half a day though.

Backlight Hardware Buttons

Since I bought my Atrix, the lights of the buttons are like on the image below: back and search are fully dark. On full brightness, is OK (but menu and home is always a little brighter)
Is it normal? Until today I did not mind because the button work OK and I don't want to send to assistance only for that.
Does anyone know what can be? At my research, I found that the backlight of buttons is the same as the screen , right?

Nope, not at all. Those are two backlights controlled separately.
No idea what's going on with yours. As far as I know, soft buttons are backlit with a few white LED-s, I guess some of yours are just giving out.
Mines the same on CM10.

capacitive button issue

This morning I started having an issue with my edge.
Whenever I touch the screen, both capacitive buttons light up. Causing for irregular behaviour when using the phone. Is there a screen calibration mode or should I return it for a new phone.
Mine does the same thing. I'm pretty sure that's standard.
Agreed. Sounds like normal behavior to me.
I fail to see how this is an issue?
It's an issue in the sense that previously on galaxy models they only light up when you press them. It's a bit ridiculous and waste of battery to have them lighting up every time you interact with the phone.
And for reasons unknown, every s6 excluding the att version has had the setting to turn off the lights removed.

That is not true.
The S5 cap lights also light up when you touch the screen. That is how it should work. It would ridiculous for it to NOT light up every time you interact with the phone (assuming you wanted them on at all).
It would be nice to have the option to turn them off. That doesn't make it an issue--more of a feature request.

Fix for this issue
Hi,
please check my reply in the S6 thread on the same issue: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=60009456&postcount=12
Hi, I have the S6 Edge. The touch key lights are not working at all. In Settings I have the Touch Key Light duration set to "Always On". Power Saving Mode is off, but they still won't come on. The keys do blink briefly during startup, so I do know they physically work. Any ideas? Thanks
Some times my capacitive buttons stop working altogether. It happened to me twice so far. It lasts about a minute. No response no light, nothing. Anyone else?

This is not on the SM-G925W8 version either.
Sometimes these buttons stop working all together and sometimes they both switch to become the task switcher button. The Back Key will no longer function to move you back a page! Very annoying. I am thinking the only fix might be a complete factory reset??
BTW, when this happens, something is loading in the background. Just before my buttons stop working, a get a very small vibration similar to when your device boots up. From that point forward the buttons don't work. It can last 1/2 hour or up to 2-3 hours before it clears itself up??
Update: I did a factory reset and it didn't do any good. There are literally thousands of posts on the web about this issue and no resolution. If you have this issue, I think you need to send your unit back.
I have a SAMSUNG-SM-G925A running stock AT&T Android 5.02
I dunno, received my Edge today and my capacitive buttons only light up when I click them.
I took my phone back today and Rogers very quickly gave me a replacement phone. Capacitive buttons working well on this one!!
Everything was working as expected and the two buttons (Back and running apps) stopped working, i made a factory rest and it did not help, I am suspecting the cover that have magnets in it and I removed it, shut down the phone for few minutes but it did not help, I will try extending the time it is shut down and see the results.
For those with button light issues try this app "Galaxy Button Lights". I'm not allowed to post external links here but you can find it in Google Play.
