capacitive button issue - Galaxy S6 Edge Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This morning I started having an issue with my edge.
Whenever I touch the screen, both capacitive buttons light up. Causing for irregular behaviour when using the phone. Is there a screen calibration mode or should I return it for a new phone.

Mine does the same thing. I'm pretty sure that's standard.

Agreed. Sounds like normal behavior to me.

I fail to see how this is an issue?

It's an issue in the sense that previously on galaxy models they only light up when you press them. It's a bit ridiculous and waste of battery to have them lighting up every time you interact with the phone.
And for reasons unknown, every s6 excluding the att version has had the setting to turn off the lights removed.

That is not true.
The S5 cap lights also light up when you touch the screen. That is how it should work. It would ridiculous for it to NOT light up every time you interact with the phone (assuming you wanted them on at all).

It would be nice to have the option to turn them off. That doesn't make it an issue--more of a feature request.

They really don't use any noticable battery.

If you enable power saving mode it turns them off FWIW.

Fix for this issue
Hi,
please check my reply in the S6 thread on the same issue: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=60009456&postcount=12

Hi, I have the S6 Edge. The touch key lights are not working at all. In Settings I have the Touch Key Light duration set to "Always On". Power Saving Mode is off, but they still won't come on. The keys do blink briefly during startup, so I do know they physically work. Any ideas? Thanks

Some times my capacitive buttons stop working altogether. It happened to me twice so far. It lasts about a minute. No response no light, nothing. Anyone else?

Where are you finding the "Touch Key Light" settings? I don't seem to see them.

Yes, I am having the same issue. I thought it might be an app but I have removed all of them and it still happens. So annoying!! Even a reboot doesn't help.

This is not on the SM-G925W8 version either.
Sometimes these buttons stop working all together and sometimes they both switch to become the task switcher button. The Back Key will no longer function to move you back a page! Very annoying. I am thinking the only fix might be a complete factory reset??
BTW, when this happens, something is loading in the background. Just before my buttons stop working, a get a very small vibration similar to when your device boots up. From that point forward the buttons don't work. It can last 1/2 hour or up to 2-3 hours before it clears itself up??
Update: I did a factory reset and it didn't do any good. There are literally thousands of posts on the web about this issue and no resolution. If you have this issue, I think you need to send your unit back.

I have a SAMSUNG-SM-G925A running stock AT&T Android 5.02

I dunno, received my Edge today and my capacitive buttons only light up when I click them.

I took my phone back today and Rogers very quickly gave me a replacement phone. Capacitive buttons working well on this one!!

Everything was working as expected and the two buttons (Back and running apps) stopped working, i made a factory rest and it did not help, I am suspecting the cover that have magnets in it and I removed it, shut down the phone for few minutes but it did not help, I will try extending the time it is shut down and see the results.

For those with button light issues try this app "Galaxy Button Lights". I'm not allowed to post external links here but you can find it in Google Play.

Capasitive Buttons Problem

Hey is anyone else having issues with the 4 buttons not lighting up properly, or at all. When I restart the phone its fine but as soon as I go past the locksxreen the buttons no longer light up until the next restart....
Is it just me or does it seem HTC didn't really take quality control into account with this device?

Those buttons use the light meter. Go to a dark room and turn on your phone and see if they light up.
No they aren't responding to light changes...
Capacitive buttons are all fine on mine. Haven't seen any issues. Only had it for half a day though.

Capacitive button Control in Helly Bean?

i think i have the right idea here. i installed the helly bean rom a couple days ago and absolutely love it so far, however the home, search, menu, back buttons all stay lit if a notification for txt or email happens while its sleeping. for further clarification in case some dont understand what i mean, say i hit the power button to go into sleep mode and someone send me a txt the phone plays the sound and lights the bottom 4 buttons like normal but once done the bottom buttons remain lit and dont turn off until i wake the phone and put it back to sleep.
any ideas on where to change this? or is it part of the rom

It is part of the ROM. It functions as a notification LED to let you know that you have a text/missed a call/etc. You shouldn't worry about it, it doesn't affect battery life.
You can turn off Notification Light in settings.

Capative Hardware keys not lit until u press in captivate key area in Helly Bean
Hi There,
I just flashed my cappy to the HellyBean ROM, and everything works great! Thanks for such a nice ROM.
While using it I found one small issue,It could be a setting issue which I'm unable to figure so please help me out.
When i'm using the phone, in gingerbeard, it used to light the bottom 4 capacitive keys(Setting,HOME,BACK,SEARCH) all the time so that I can press them when i'm using the phone in dark. But in Hellybean, those 4 LEDs are not lit when the touch screen is used, those 4 buttons are lit only when I press in the Bottom area.
Please let me know how to make them ON even when i'm using the touchscreen area?
Thanks,
Raj
This is the vibrant section not captivate but I think there is a setting in devil kernel configuration app. Don't know for sure which exact setting controls that but I think there's another setting in display, try both. I don't use any bln because of battery use, plus I'm no longer running HB on my vibe or cappy.

Screen turns on when on call using bluetooth headset

Hello everybody.
I have a rooted 4.0.4 XXLFB Galaxy S3 and have noticed a problem.
Whenever I'm on a call using my blueooth headset, the screen turns on once every 30 seconds, give or take.
It's a problem because if I have the phone in my pocket, sometimes I mute the call, other times I turn off the headset...
Does anybody know how to solve this?
Thanks in advance.
Posting to add a "me too" to the list. Trying a ton of different things, almost to the point of clean device.
Hit the button and the screen turns off, about 2-5 seconds later, screen turns back on. Does not matter what I do. Seems to do it with speakerphone option too. If neither Bluetooth nor speakerphone are used, and you put the phone to your ear, backlight stays off. Otherwise, it automatically turns back on by itself. Tried with wifi on/off, speaker with bt on/off, different headsets, etc. My Wife's does not have this issue, so I gotta look into what is different. There has gotta be a setting or app installed that is doing this. I've even tried apps such as screebl and others. Some even had a thing to say lock it off till press button, and it still comes back on after 2-5 seconds. I've muted and hung up on many people when the phone was in my pocket because of this issue.
I've not used a BT headset but i'm thinking that maybe because the phone isn't against your head the screen comes on. possibly to give you information about the caller.
I'm not saying you should put the phone to your head even though your using bluetooth either.
thanks, but, don't help, tried that too. Had entire top half of phone covered during most tests. Screen does not turn off unless I press button, then comes back on automatically after 2-5 seconds. I did find one app today that seemed to work, but not sure if it works too well "Smart Screen Off".
Sounds silly but have you tried locking the handset?
That's what I meant by pressing the button. Button on right side that if I am not on a call, turns off screen and locks it.
Ok - narrowed it down a ton. If I leave the in-call status screen up, the screen turns back on after being turned off via power button. If I hit home or have any other screen active, it remains off. So dialer related, but I can deal with an extra button press.

agree with the above. if you leave call status up while connected via BT headset, screen remains active (comes in and out). if you exit active call status (ie press home) then the screen timeout works. if you are talking on the phone without headset, no problem.
so yes, that's the prob. any solid fix yet?
please and thanks....

Thanks a lot, visegrip. It was really frustating having to redial every other call because i hang up without noticing.
Any solution to this problem? Hitting a home button and locking the phone is not an option when I keep my phone in a leather holster on my belt. That's a main reason for having bluetooth as hands free.
Problem solved by using Tasker. If anyone need APK patch file to fix a problem, let me know and I'll post it here

You know, I use tasker and have been trying to figure this out for a while. I've also been trying Secure settings and Locale Using multiple settings and plug-ins. I have not been able to create anything yet that seems completely reliable.
Not trying to be rude or anything, but I am and always have been a little leary of installing APK files unless I know the source. However, if you would be so kind to post the contexts and tasks so that I may enter them myself manually, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Well, It's pretty easy.
Profile -> Phone Offhook
Task:
Wait 20 seconds
App-> Go Home
Display -> System Lock
In case if you'll have any problems just use my apk file which is exactly the same.
Good news! I just took the Jelly Bean update from sprint & this problem is FIXED!
I tried calling and turned off the screen and it stayed off!
I also called and didn't touch the screen and after the timeout, it turned itself off!
Hmmmmm... OK. Thank you. I'll have to try that and see how it works. I was looking, hoping and working on trying to get something that would keep the screen off. Dialing, talking and ending the call. I've got something that seems to work for the most part, (I still get quick flashes, which is fine) but still have some more work to do on it.

Maybe its a hardware defect?

i disabled auto brightness and set the brightness to the highest level. But its still same: very dim and after a while a black screen; after a few times of unlocking, the display works normally
I have just seen the same issue on a friend's S3.
Anyone else? I feel like this is a very big issue that is still lurking in a lot of devices.
I tried it myself and I toggled the power button to turn the screen on and off.
It doesn't take long but sometimes when the screen turns back on, it's super dim and you can faintly see the lockscreen image.
You have to cycle the screen several more times to get it to the 'correct' brightness, and no it is NOT a brightness setting.
It's some hardware issue in the phone.
Sorry for the necrobump, but I only found this thread. I have this problem too since about a week back. It makes my phone useless at times. I first thought it was a software issue. I have an app (called Twilight) for dimming the screen more than normal settings and also toning it, for nightime use, and I thought that was the culprit first, but nope. I have flashed rom, recovery, wiped all caches I can think of. Still happens, just now I was in the middle of installing android revolution hd, and the screen ultradimmed on me so I can't finish the process
Thing is, a few months ago I managed to crack my screen by way of gravity and concrete. I let the samsung brand service centre in Stockholm repair it for me (it is out of warranty) and this issue with the dimming never happened before that. Then again, it didn't happen directly afterwards either... but still. So, I am thinking: either me dropping it caused more damages and this is because of that. Or the service center did a bad install of the new screen. Or, the replacement screen that was installed has a defect in itself. I am leaning a bit towards the third explanation... maybe different batches of screens?
Does anyone have any ideas? If I am to contact the service center and complain about their work I would like to be able to point towards a "known problem"...

Take it back, if it didn't happen before then the new screen is most likely.
It isn't a common problem

[Q] Capcitive Touch key lights not working

Hi, I have the S6 Edge. The touch key lights are not working at all. In Settings I have the Touch Key Light duration set to "Always On". Power Saving Mode is off, but they still won't come on. The keys do blink briefly during startup, so I do know they physically work. Any ideas? Thanks

It could be one of two things imo. Defective unit or display unit.

I think the capacitive touch screen lights are automatically disabled if one of the power saving modes are activated. Check to see if one of them are enabled.
The behavior of the touch light keys is tied to the "power saving mode". By enabling "power saving" mode it seems the touch light keys remain off.
Same thing just happened to my S6 (not the edge model). Battery was getting low, turned on the power saver mode, charged the phone back up 100%, turned power saver mode back off and now my buttons don't light up. I noticed they to will flicker when the phone is restarted.

OK I think I just fixed it. Set your capacitive keys to always on, then go to power saver settings and set it to immediately. Now no matter what percentage your battery is at your phone will go into power saver. Then turn it off right away and your keys should light back up.
Where are you guys finding the setting to adjust the capacitive lights? I've looked everywhere and can't find it. Even googled it. I want mine permanently off and all i found was "use power save mode for that"
Same thing here! I already contacted Samsung and Sprint, they don't know how to fix it! Take it to the store to get a replacement !

YES!!!! That fixed my issue too. This happened a couple weeks ago. I couldn't figure it out so I did a factory reset (fixed it). Now it cropped up again this past weekend. Glad I'm not the only one. It is an ugly software bug I hope gets fixed.
Definitely a Software Bug !!

Thanks! It fixed mine too but I had to do an additional step of turning power saver off, then back on, then changing it to turn on at 15% (from immediately) and turning it back off.
Such a weird bug.
Had the same problem. Did restarts/ full wipe/ called customer service/ went to service carrier store.... Problem ended up being the case I had purchased (phone specific at that). If you have this problem try removing the screen protector and phone case restart the phone and plug into the charger. Keep in mind that I had the exact same case on without removal for a few weeks before it started interfering with the captive keys. My keys have been working 100% since minus the protection.
