How to tether without getting caught? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I'm currently running on Shostock 4.1.1. I use to be an AT&T rep for 3 years until September of 2011. Before I quit, I noticed a lot of cases where AT&T took away people's unlimited plans because of illegal tethering. Needless to say I stopped tethering since then.
My question is, is there a way to tether without getting caught by AT&T? I only need to do this for 2 days on my road trip

VPN, or I heard some people use a different APN.

Agree. I think different apn is needed.

I thought most roms we have here already have the tethering enabled and allowed and the settings configured so we wouldn't get caught? I dunno I use it all the time and never had any problems.

As long as the TTL of the wifi hotspot app is set to be the same as the phone, it's impossible to have definitive evidence.

Uhh? screw that
run a custom ROM.
and tether to your hearts desire.
been doing that for a while, tho I'd love an unlimited plan

PdaNet is USB tethering that claims to mask your other device. I also thought another developer was working on this, might has been Chainfire.

"Pda net" plus "Fox fi" (both of the apps for Fox fi)...won't work on jellybean, but works great on ics, haven't been caught in the past year so far...it uses the phone apn instead of the tethering one, i believe that's how it works, so att only sees you using phone data
Sent from my SGH-I777 using xda app-developers app

I've just been using the tether option from jellybean release and Rogers hasn't charged me anything. Granted I am on the internet.com apn.

I was wondering WHY and HOW ATT can still be charging for it? Courts recently ruled in a Verizon case that they HAD TO offer free tethering on ALL plans. I will have to look up the link but I am sure I read it in yahoo news. So if that is the case and a judge declared it, then HOW can ATT get away with it. Your paying for you 2Gb, 3Gb, or like in my case Unlimited data plan. So if you use YOUR DATA up to what you pay for (2Gb/3Gb data) it should NOT MATTER HOW YOU USE IT. PERIOD...

This does not and will not affect ATT's tethering in any way. Verizon had an agreement when they bought access to their 4G baseband. The lawsuit was because they broke that agreement. In addition, it was a settlement, not a court ruling. This is not the case with ATT. Sorry guys.

I heard that tethering to laptops/desktop/computer in general is easier to get caught than tethering to a tablet. If you use a lot of data by tethering to a computer, AT&T might find out easily compared to if you're tethering to a tablet.

Thank you, this is the one I couldn't remember.

I got the warning once when using my iPhone back in the day with MyWi.
I have yet to get caught (knock on wood) using the Galaxy S2 on my grandfathered unlimited plan. I've used it a handful of time (road trip Slingbox on my laptop for streaming TV and in airports waiting for a plane).
What I've done on the PC end is disable anything that would try and access the internet other than the web browser. If your computer is let's say...looking for Windows Updates that's pretty obvious it's not coming from a phone. So that's one of a few services I disable when I opt to tether the laptop to the phone.
Been doing this for a year now and okay (/knocks on wood/)

Hmm..don't think you'll be able to. As soon as at&t picks up the i777 you'll be told you need the correct data plan. Idk...i may be wrong.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
I think that might work with 3G phones ... I know it worked on my HTC 8525 WinMo phone. I don't think it will work on a "4G" phone. The data plans aren't the same, and when I first got a Faux G phone it wouldn't get any data until att changed the plan that worked fine with my Captivate.
Its also possible that att has finally wised up to that, and its not possible anymore.
I want to say I have heard it works if the phone is not att branded, such as a TMo phone (but you only get edge in most markets) or an international phone like the i9100. But, I am not sure about that.
Sent from my Galaxy S II (i777)
I don't think it will work anymore. I was using the dumb-phone data plan for the past 3-4 months, every two weeks or so, i would get my data plan changed to the smartphone data plan. I would use the wap apn.
I would put my sim card back into my nokia which registered as a dumb phone and would change back to the dumb phone data plan online. During the last time my sgs2 data plan was changed, i wasn't able to change it back. It just kept showing the $30 plan. I talked with someone on chat and they changed it back to dumb phone data plan, but an hour after i put the sim card back on, the data plan was changed to a smartphone plan.
I don't go over 200mb a month, have access to wifi almost everywhere, so I talked with a guy on chat and had him put me on the $15 smartphone plan.
ill post back
i am hopping it works and i have sutup on media net will see nothing to loose.
I had the medianet plan until I upgraded to the GS2. AT&T changed my data plan to the 2G data plan when I renewed my contract with the upgrade. I fought it and they refused to let me go back to what I had. I was told the Medianet plan does not exist anymore and could not be used on current smartphones.
Thanks AT&T

Hot spot getting billed.

So I've had my phone rooted since day one and the last two months my bill has showed fees for two if my three lines with hot spot fees and it just so happens to be the two rooted phones with hot spots. They have no way of telling you are rooted, or running a hotspot app, especially if you have never even used the hotspot app. If it's on your bill, either someone on your account put it there, or it may have just been a mistake by a rep. Either way, there is nothing we can do about it here. You need to call your carrier and have them take it off.
I know there is nothing any of you can do about it I was just wondering if this has happened to anyone else.

M8, the wifi hotspot (if thats what you mean) is a feature of the phone and you should not be billed ontop of your usual bill for it, if your a crazy downloader and have just downloaded about 20 dvd's from it or something then fair enough they may have something to moan about, but from my understanding it's a feature of the phone and if you have an unlimited data plan then they have no right to bill you extra for using something on your phone that has nothing to do with them, all you are doing if you use it is utilizing your phones features and your tarriffs benefits.
Speak to them and get it sorted, it's never happened to me in over 4 years of using HTC devices with this feature rooted or not.

Plus this guy shouldn't be paying for this, unless he signed up to something, this is a feature of the phone and nothing to do with the network.

That is a fact. There are thousands of reports of the same issues with the company. Also, just look at the tax fraud alone and tell me that they care about doing things that are legal.
I don't have to source anything to an uneducated member. Pick up a paper once in a while.
btw, THOSE PHONES BELONG to us. Not sprint. They can't legally block a function of the phone to force profit. They get away with it because no one stops them. Just like this so called 10 dollar extra a month per phone for having a rock solid speedy phone. they didn't provide that phone to us. HTC DID! Consumers no longer have control over large companies. The government no longer has control.
I never got billed, but one time I went to turn on 4g and accidently turned on hot spot. Within 5 minutes I received a text from sprint mentioning the benefit of the hot spot feature and how to add it to my plan. Coincidence?

Pretty sure 3rd party tethering apps are not allowed. They want you to pay the additional fee for tethering. If they catch you they I'm sure could terminate your account. Never heard of it happening though.

Terminate your account, call due your etfs, and send your a ginormous data bill would be the worst case scenario.
Chances are terminating your account would also blacklist you from reinstating it....ever.

The ruling is almost entirely about tethering apps, not service. Verizon gets through on a loophole due to CDMA being included in a lot of this stuff. Try to take them to court on it, I dare ya

Right, but never have is not synonymous with never will.
From what I read, OP just wanted a worse case scenario sort of response.
None of us can rightfully tell the guy that he cannot be punished for unauthorized tethering.
We have an awesome Verizon corporate rep. It is a great looking chic and she is cool as hell.
I asked her about this one time and about things like using a ton of data with my slingbox etc. She actually walked in while I was using my Slingbox and asked me how it worked.
She could care less what I do, but she did advise me not to go absolutely crazy with the data use as things like Slingbox that are unsupported and third party tethering are TOS violations and you may endanger your unlimited data package (something I have been really careful not to do)
She said as long as you use a reasonable amount of data VZ won't care, but the DBs that use 150 gigs a month and then brag about it on sites like this are definitely pressing their luck IMHO.

LTE is not allowed to be throttled.
They will on 3G though.
Cool. I might go that route. Seems like it could be alright though. Right now I pay 80 bucks for internet for the high speeds. Ibget better speeds on lte than that though. 50 dollar savings seems ok

If you use a 3rd party app or hack the stock tethering you should be fine as long as you don't go crazy tethering. You'd most likely not be content with a home network tethered from your phone. Verizon will throttle your data to crippling speeds if you consistently used a large amount of data.

Only if its 3g data, they don't throttle 4g.
I do agree it's not the worlds best idea to run your entire home internet by tethering however.
I would never do that (i use roadrunner) and sooner or later I firmly believe verizon will discontinue unlimited data for everyone anyway.
They won't charge you anything. They will simply put a block on your tethering and nothing else.

Care to share an article?
In the days of the Droid X, there was a simple hack to remove throttling. In everything I've read currently, the throttle is done at the network level, not from the device. I don't see why they'd throttle 3G and not 4G (LTE).

Hotspot Tether without root for unlimited Users

I am currently stuck on the update without root like many.. but the main reason I root is for tether for my unlimited account.. I downloaded and paid for foxfi (now also pdanet) and it obviously didn't work a few weeks back.. however a new update today and the wifi hotspot works.. creates a vpn to work, but I am currently on it now.. update says for the maxx hd and others doesn't list the dna but I can confirm it works.. maybe worth the 5 bucks to someone here. Just a heads up.. (created this account just for this thread, I usually only lurk)

Great news. Finally! I'll try it.

I have the DNA, and an unlimited plan. By default, when you try to tether up it will tell you to call your carrier to subscribe. You can do it, but you need to be rooted. If you are rooted then install the Android Wifi Tether app from here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.googlecode.android.wifi.tether
Once you run the app use the following settings:
Device-Profile: Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)
Setup-Method: Auto
Enable "WiFi-driver reload"
Enable "Routing fix"
This should get you up and going.
But we're not rooted. This is "tether without root" discussion. If you're rooted, sure, you can use wifi tether no problem. The problem is to tether without root.

If you get the latest wireless tether beta from Google there is an option for non root tether. I haven't been able to test it because I'm rooted but someone should try it.
It just uses the native tether framework. So Vzw can throttle it

I forgot if I looked it up or not, but this throttling term, what exactly does it mean?
And how likely are you to lose your grandfathered unlimited plan by tethering?

You won't lose it. And throttling is a server-side limit on your data throughput. Meaning really slow speeds

Really? You'll never lose it based on your usage? I've read otherwise and people saying that you'll be fine, so I've just been confused.
I currently use Clockwork tether until I can get rooted and use the wifi tether, decent app, reliable and good speeds.

Nope you won't ever lose It. Some people in here use several hundred gigs a month. As long as your rooted you won't get charged/throttled either

Well that is great news xD!
I actually went to the VZW store in the mall where I live to activate my dna since I needed a new sim,
and they decided to look at my data usuage, I was kind of nervous and the new person was being trained by the
manager and the new person was like "... You used 100gigs last month?" and the manager looked and said "I'm going
to give you a high five for that, that's the new store record here". Definitely a funny day and we continued to talk about
the phone, tethering and JTAG.

But the more people who exploit their unlimited data by tethering huge amounts of data the sooner Verizon will force everyone off unlimited data.

From what I have read is that they can cancel your unlimited data if you are negatively effecting others experience.
Which can mean what ever they want it to really, but also you have the unlimited data to do as you please as long as
you please to.
So I really don't know on this topic.

If they cancel your unlimited for you using too much, you can get out of your contract. I use 90-100 gigs a month. One tech asked me how I used so much. I just said that I watch a lot of Netflix on my phone.

I can't be bothered to Google it, but Verizon can't charge or throttle LTE tethering I do believe. Had something to do with the block C purchase and the FCC. Could be wrong though, bit I do remember reading something along those lines.
They can charge for the stock Wi-Fi hotspot app service, but if you use something else I think it's exempt...
Again, could be wrong...

They can't charge for tiered data, but they can and do for unlimited data, for obvious reasons.

Its expiring any loopholes? Lol

Not to cause trouble but how is that any different then the Tether Hack?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2305118
That's an interesting point made. While certainly not apples to apples... the tethering hacks are 'stealing' from the carrier, just as warez 'steals' from the developers.

The tether hack is merely a t&c violation which is in a gray area. While there are those that abuse it, many folks using it actually use less data than those of us on tiered plans. There exists an argument that they are already paying for the data that they are using.
Conversely, what the op is looking for is theft of a paid subscription service, and is not a t&c violation. There is no gray area- it's a paid service for any and all who use itbeyond the trial.

Personally they are both almost the same. Tether plan costs higher than the caller ID plan though. Lol

This is a interesting line and a good point to bring up. As I understand where both parties are coming from. Tether is also a paid service so is this caller iD app. To me it falls under the same category... Fine line idk?

I froze this app but I'm still getting full caller ID info. It's been two weeks since I got my phone.
Is it possible that freezing the app prevented this from getting shut off after the trial somehow?

What's weird still is that I liked the trial enough to purchase it for $3/month. I get alot of calls and realized how nice it was to know what company was calling, etc, when they have multiple numbers that they dial out from. I installed a new ROM which was debloated and it didn't have the app; I tried searching for the apps name to download it again, just to have what I'm paying for but couldn't find it. Without the app, I still get full caller id info, just no options to add it to my contacts. I realized it must be getting turned on @ Verizon, since they are billing me for the services.
This leads me to believe the app is just for adding contacts etc, so I'm guessing that "IF SOMEONE WAS SEARCHING FOR A H**K", which violates xda rules, that its probably pointless. I decided its just another $3/month, which is worth it and cheaper then a landline caller ID service.
I'm a Nurse, not a hacker or developer ( which I know are completely different things ) so this is JUST MY EDUCATED GUESS

If anyone could upload the app for me, I would greatly appreciate it. I know I can just download a stock ROM, that's not debloated and grab it, but thats a 2 hour download of 1.2gigs, just for the app since I can't locate the same app anywhere I've looked; and yes I HAVE SEARCHED FOR IT.
THANK YOU !!!

If on unlimited data, paying for data only and tethering for free isn't an option from VZW. It's their policy whether we like it or not. I hate it but I pay for it.

I concur which is why I'm on a share everything plan. I tetheroccasionally anddon't usemore than8 GB a monthBergen all of our devices. Verizon is legally obligated to provide it to tiered customers at no extra charge, but still hits customers on the legacy unlimited plan with the fee.
That being said, is there a realistic difference between a customer who is on a tiered 4 GB plan who tethers and one who is on an unlimited plan who uses 3GB a month including occasionally tethering a tablet? Verizon's justificationto the FCC is that there exists the "potential" for unlimited customers to use a large amount of data.
As I've said, it amounts to a mere t&c violation for using their already paid for data in a manner that Verizon has said that is free only if they pay for less data.

There's actually a pretty strong legal argument that they can't charge extra for tethering to anyone, but that is off topic here.
Also, violating a contract is not illegal (i.e. criminal) or in my opinion, immoral. Theft of service is...and that is what we are talking about here.

Actually, since the topic of this thread is verboten, we may as well go with the tangent...
I suspect you're going in the direction of the Block C restriction. The FCC has expressly given Verizon the green light to charge unlimited customers for tethering in the consent decree that was issued last summer.

I disagree.....all you're doing is turning you're phone into a router to use the data that you're already receiving to the phone. A theft of service would apply that you are receiving additional data, which you are not....... you're pulling the same data to you're phone regardless its in tethering mode or not
