Unlimited data + Tethering - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

Since third party tethering apps are allowed. What are the consequences of running whole home imternet off my phone. Anything VZW can do? Heard they can terminate account.

thats a good question i would like to know too

Pretty sure 3rd party tethering apps are not allowed. They want you to pay the additional fee for tethering. If they catch you they I'm sure could terminate your account. Never heard of it happening though.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 2

Terminate your account, call due your etfs, and send your a ginormous data bill would be the worst case scenario.
Chances are terminating your account would also blacklist you from reinstating it....ever.

They are allowed verizon can't do anything about it as long as the fcc is there. Also they would terminate your account they'd just want you to pay for a tethering plan and the data that you've used.

Um, yes they can if you are on unlimited. FCC even knows about it.
http://www.fcc.gov/document/verizon-wireless-pay-125-million-settle-investigation
In addition, the company recently revised its service offerings such that consumers on usage-based
pricing plans may tether, using any application, without paying an additional fee.

The FCC ruling does not include grandfathered plans.
The ruling is almost entirely about tethering apps, not service. Verizon gets through on a loophole due to CDMA being included in a lot of this stuff. Try to take them to court on it, I dare ya

I rooted my friend's nexus for Verizon and he's currently running a 3rd party tethering app and nothing has happened to his account.

They don't have to allow tethering on CDMA at all.

Right, but never have is not synonymous with never will.
From what I read, OP just wanted a worse case scenario sort of response.
None of us can rightfully tell the guy that he cannot be punished for unauthorized tethering.

We have an awesome Verizon corporate rep. It is a great looking chic and she is cool as hell.
I asked her about this one time and about things like using a ton of data with my slingbox etc. She actually walked in while I was using my Slingbox and asked me how it worked.
She could care less what I do, but she did advise me not to go absolutely crazy with the data use as things like Slingbox that are unsupported and third party tethering are TOS violations and you may endanger your unlimited data package (something I have been really careful not to do)
She said as long as you use a reasonable amount of data VZ won't care, but the DBs that use 150 gigs a month and then brag about it on sites like this are definitely pressing their luck IMHO.

Dang. I was gonna use foxfi with premium key to do so. So if I pay the 30 buck hotspot fee and lets say ise 150+ gb of data, will they stop my hotspot

LTE is not allowed to be throttled.
They will on 3G though.

Cool. I might go that route. Seems like it could be alright though. Right now I pay 80 bucks for internet for the high speeds. Ibget better speeds on lte than that though. 50 dollar savings seems ok

If you use a 3rd party app or hack the stock tethering you should be fine as long as you don't go crazy tethering. You'd most likely not be content with a home network tethered from your phone. Verizon will throttle your data to crippling speeds if you consistently used a large amount of data.

Only if its 3g data, they don't throttle 4g.
I do agree it's not the worlds best idea to run your entire home internet by tethering however.
I would never do that (i use roadrunner) and sooner or later I firmly believe verizon will discontinue unlimited data for everyone anyway.

They won't charge you anything. They will simply put a block on your tethering and nothing else.

Care to share an article?
In the days of the Droid X, there was a simple hack to remove throttling. In everything I've read currently, the throttle is done at the network level, not from the device. I don't see why they'd throttle 3G and not 4G (LTE).

Question about data usage

If I tether like 6-7 GBs of data whether it be 3G or 4G, will Sprint terminate my contract?
I'm asking because I need to tether because I'm having problems with Comcast and I refuse to go to AT&T. So yeah, will my contract get terminated or will they charge me more on the monthly bill?
Also, is roaming free on Sprint?

I think that counts.

If ur not paying for tethering then u dont have a 5 gb limit. Sprints data is unlimited. Roaming is free unless u really really abuse it without using much sprint data.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
Too much data usage is a reason for them to become suspicious. I advise towards limiting it. I personally don't tether, ever. Sprint is nice enough for unlimited data, I don't want to risk anything.
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
I use about 6Gb a month, but I don't tether. That's all browsing and streaming on my phone. But they can check the packets and find out what device its coming from.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
If you use an app like easy tether pro (like I use) or pdanet then I don't think that sprint can monitor data usage if you're not using their service to tether. My internet is off right now and I can only imagine the number of gigs I used in the last month or so downloading roms through my phone internet, not to mention all the gameloft games with data downloads I bought. Sprint has yet to come to me about anything so I'm in the clear., if I had to estimate, I have used over 7 gigs in just downloads alone, they doesn't include regular internet browsing on my phone and PC, so give that a try.

LTE question

So my girlfriend is going to be getting a note.
But we don't get lte in our area. We hardly get 4g.
Do we absolutely have to add a lte data plan on to our account or could we get like a 3g/4g data plan?
Basically don't want to pay for something we are never going to use.

You can call ATT to verify but I'm pretty sure you can use a normal data plan. Your account needs to be provisioned for LTE for it to work (and with the SIM iirc), but you should still be able to pull hspa+ with no issues.
I wasn't charged anything extra for having LTE provisioned on my account, but I'm also grandfathered unlimited.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA
Yeah, it will depend greatly on the actual AT&T person who sets you up. Bottom line is that technically, you can use the Note without being provisioned for LTE. My girlfriend and I both had our Notes set up on our old data plan for a couple of months before a store realized the error while fishing in our account for other stuff.
Ok. I actually just called them.
The guy basically said that no matter what I get for data 3g/4g/LTE its all the same price.
It just depends on how much data she wants.
Can anyone confirm this?
She had a 2gb data plan from like 2 1/2 years ago. They don't offer that so they said regardless we are going to be charged more once we upgrade the contract.

Yeah the 2gb plan is no longer available, it's now like 500mb for 20 3gb for 30 and i dint remember how much the 5gb plan was cause i went with the 3gb
The plans and prices are all the same regardless of what smartphone u have. Currently they are $20/300mb $30/3gb $50/5gb with tethering. if u already had a smartphone on an older smartphone data plan you are grandfathered in to that for the time being.

I've been considering mentioning it. Because of the spectrum that Verizon bought, they cannot "double dip" into our pockets and are not allowed to charge twice for the same data, thus we're allowed to tether. This does not apply to unlimited because the data you use on unlimited is dictated by usage rather than by purchasing a set amount of data per month.

That's true, the thing I meant about unlimited was that if they switched to this they wouldn't have it anymore. And instead of tacking on $30 extra to there bill for the hotspot that the root for wifi is better for them.. but if a person doesn't have unlimited, this plan would be one to think about

But then I realized this phone kicks at 1080p, so things like youtube/netflix streams are going to be coming in at higher bitrates. I'll also probably use the phone more than my thunderbolt for general web-surfing since it look so much better. Basically, this phone is going to kick up my consumption levels several factors. 6GB is barely enough for my thunderbolt, I have a feeling I'm going to break the bank with the DNA. So I paid full retail just to keep unlimited.

The tether hack is merely a t&c violation which is in a gray area. While there are those that abuse it, many folks using it actually use less data than those of us on tiered plans. There exists an argument that they are already paying for the data that they are using.
Conversely, what the op is looking for is theft of a paid subscription service, and is not a t&c violation. There is no gray area- it's a paid service for any and all who use itbeyond the trial.

What's weird still is that I liked the trial enough to purchase it for $3/month. I get alot of calls and realized how nice it was to know what company was calling, etc, when they have multiple numbers that they dial out from. I installed a new ROM which was debloated and it didn't have the app; I tried searching for the apps name to download it again, just to have what I'm paying for but couldn't find it. Without the app, I still get full caller id info, just no options to add it to my contacts. I realized it must be getting turned on @ Verizon, since they are billing me for the services.
This leads me to believe the app is just for adding contacts etc, so I'm guessing that "IF SOMEONE WAS SEARCHING FOR A H**K", which violates xda rules, that its probably pointless. I decided its just another $3/month, which is worth it and cheaper then a landline caller ID service.
I'm a Nurse, not a hacker or developer ( which I know are completely different things ) so this is JUST MY EDUCATED GUESS

I concur which is why I'm on a share everything plan. I tetheroccasionally anddon't usemore than8 GB a monthBergen all of our devices. Verizon is legally obligated to provide it to tiered customers at no extra charge, but still hits customers on the legacy unlimited plan with the fee.
That being said, is there a realistic difference between a customer who is on a tiered 4 GB plan who tethers and one who is on an unlimited plan who uses 3GB a month including occasionally tethering a tablet? Verizon's justificationto the FCC is that there exists the "potential" for unlimited customers to use a large amount of data.
As I've said, it amounts to a mere t&c violation for using their already paid for data in a manner that Verizon has said that is free only if they pay for less data.

I froze this app but I'm still getting full caller ID info. It's been two weeks since I got my phone.
Is it possible that freezing the app prevented this from getting shut off after the trial somehow?

There's actually a pretty strong legal argument that they can't charge extra for tethering to anyone, but that is off topic here.
Also, violating a contract is not illegal (i.e. criminal) or in my opinion, immoral. Theft of service is...and that is what we are talking about here.

Actually, since the topic of this thread is verboten, we may as well go with the tangent...
I suspect you're going in the direction of the Block C restriction. The FCC has expressly given Verizon the green light to charge unlimited customers for tethering in the consent decree that was issued last summer.

I disagree.....all you're doing is turning you're phone into a router to use the data that you're already receiving to the phone. A theft of service would apply that you are receiving additional data, which you are not....... you're pulling the same data to you're phone regardless its in tethering mode or not
