Firmware update - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Can we take firmware update if rooted and s on?
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app

From what I've been told and understand, never ever take an update from the carrier. All the good stuff will be extracted and the bad left out with the next update of whatever ROM you are running... usually if not, find another ROM

You will lose root. Never take a firmware update (from what I've read) Only update profile and prl.

Are you able to go s-off? Sounds like you might be since you haven't taken any OTAs of course depending on when your got your phone too. If so then you should do it.
There are ways to upgrade your firmware without taking it via OTAs.
There are several threads in development that address your concerns.

Firmware upgrade a must ?
Hi, I would love to try the MeanBean2.4 ROM, I understand that a firmware upgrade would be a must ? I'm on Viper4G2.0.2 ROM and if I do a firmware update I'm sure my Viper4g rom will not load or run correctly. Is there a way to reverse a firmware update ? Can I do it via my installed TWRP 2.3.3 ? Currently I have S-Off Lazy Panda, Hboot 1.12.111, Radio 1.02.12.0427.
I like the Viper4G ROM, but getting old, has minor issues, got Gogole now working on my Viper rom but can't update via Play Store..no big issues, but I would still like to have the option to go back to this ROM. I did a full backup (Sys,Data,Boot,Recovery,Cache) via TWRP. Would a restore fix any mess created by firmware attempt ? Could I even get to TWRP after firmware update or a botched update ?
Any input would be greatly appreciated
Regards,
Julian

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2045935 choose the first file under Firmware Downloads/rename PJ75IMG / put it on your ext sdcard / boot into bootloader / it should ask you if you want to upgrade / when it's done and you are rebooted delete the file from your sdcard

Going back to old Firmware possible ?
Thank you for that info, I did find one firm just a bit newer PJ75IMG_3.15.651.6-no-boot-recovery.zip and I do know how to install. I do not expect an answer on my question if I can still run Viper4G2.0.2 after this upgrade (will ask Team Venom), however, would you know if I can revert back to the old Firmware ? Via TWRP or other method ? I hear renamig the old PJ75IMG.old that I left on the phone to PJ75IMG.zip and installing it to try to get old firmware is a bad idea and possible brick road ! lol
Thanks again,
Julian

Reverting your firmware will indeed brick you AFAIK and you should be able to run Viper4G with the new firmware when I updated my firmware I was running an ICS rom I didn't notice any problems.

Going for it...
Well I think I'm going to try now, I still hope that by saving my original firmware file on my SD and then run TWRP Restore will get me back...or not ! lol Worse case I'll say goodbye to the Viper Rom... God help me, I love my EVO..ha haa

Your first screenie shows you are still on the older radio. You didn't do the update?

Yeah, JDownloader is running at 50kb a second as well.
Here is my mirror, should allow speeds way fater than the capped 50KB.
http://ifile.it/xp8icg0/RUU_Shooter_S_Sprint_WWE_1.13.651.7_Radio_0.97.10.0530_NV_NV_SPCS_1.16_release_198109_signed.exe
and Joeykrim, this is wwjoshdew from sdx.
EDIT: iFile.it deletes files after so long. Unfortunately, they've made it towards you have to register to download, which is crap, BUT you can upload and download MUCH larger files than you can with MediaFire or a lot of other sites. So there is no waiting. If you can register with iFile.it, TRUST ME, it's FREE and it's worth it.

It's just an RUU for restoration updated to the newest OTA, so anyone restoring starts with the two OTA's already installed.

If you've already done the Update via your Phone you have this already.
Although I'd encourage you not to update your device until a fully unlocked s-off solution is available.

no point installing this if you already did the 2 OTA updates that were released last week (one system, one software). this is just a complete system/rom/hboot/radio etc package that includes everything that has been released so far.

nothing, so don't use it (ok, well the OTA on the phone includes just the updated stuff, not the whole shabang. this is the whole shabang). this is mainly for devs to use to cook up ROMs. you could use it if your phone would not boot, and you had to reinstall everything. otherwise right now there is no good reason to use this.
Thank you!
For some reason, my 3D wouldn't see the update to 1.12 or 1.13...it came with 1.11.
Man, I wouldn't update if I had S-OFF in an S-ON world... But thats me...
Cool deal...will wait on it
Yeah, I wouldn't update either...
Does anyone have a change log? Curious...
So I just installed this and am getting an OTA. Has there been another OTA, since the original 2? Or, is this missing one of them? Says it's for lockscreen and Watch...
EDIT: I'm dumb...just app updates.

Main Version is older Update Fail

So I downloaded the PH86IMG.zip file from the thread on how you install the current version of clockwork mod back at the developers thread of the amaze 4G forum and when ever i go into Bootloader mode it would "update" but at the end it will say
Main Version is older
Update Fail!
did i do anything wrong? i followed the instructions and everything is there a newer PH86IMG.zip file that will work. BTW i got that OTA update from Tmobile. im not sure how many OTA updates there were im assuming there was only 1.
Any Help would be appreciated
I don't know exactly the details and versions for our phone, but on the MT4G we had issues if your radio was newer than the ROM or PH15IMG.zip file you were trying to use in bootloader.
For example, if you had a GB radio and tried to flash a Froyo rom through bootloader it wouldn't work. You get the same error that you're getting. I think it was determined you can only do this if your true s-off.
I would check your radio and the stock rom versions available, make sure the rom you want is newer than your radio. So you might have to change your radio to a previous version. This is all based on my experience with the MT4G, so it could be wrong here but it sounds similar. Good luck!

That's prolly just the ota... Not ready to flash via recovery. Must be taken apart and assembled with slight modifications first. Unless its an update .zip either case I would wait for the go ahead.

Finally got the ICS update today here in Dubai. lot of excitement during installation.
Guys if you haven't received the update yet please be patient you will receive it.
ICS looks good especially the Home Screen. No wallpaper Scrollable function present but overall it looks good and nothing great about it. Have to wait and see the performance.
The interface is okay nothing much new.
HTC will soon announce the Phones which can be upgraded to Jelly bean 4.1. it seems they wont delay like they did for ICS. I'm sure EVO 3D will be compatible with Jellybean 4.1.

Is it safe to assume that the OTA would fail if I'm S-Off with TWRP installed? I just S-off'd & rooted last night. Still running the stock ROM. Haven't made any other modifications other than uninstall a few preloaded apps.

I'm not rooted on this phone and unsure of how to extract the OTA without root access. If you know of a way, let me know and I'd be happy to do it. In the meantime, here's a couple of screenshots of the updated baseband and firmware versions.
Ill post once its finished downloading if someone else doesnt get to it first
IF youve already updated, the ota usually gets deleted after/during the reboot....if you postpone and reboot itll be either in the root of your storage or in downloads...
