[Q's] Kids Videos App - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just have a couple questions for Android owners with kids.
I've created an app that plays kids videos from YouTube that I've found to be appropriate for children (hasn't been published yet). I've currently searched and found 60+ videos that would be ok and the list would certainly increase over time.
The app doesn't use the YouTube player so that the child cannot find inappropriate videos after watching their selection. Using the back button will only get them back to the app and when the video is done playing it will also return to the app. The app wouldn't have ads either. So, it is a little safer way to turn a kid loose allowing them to watch videos.
Would this be of interest to you? If so, would you be willing to pay for it? If no, why not?

I think many parents can be interested, since it's an easier way to entertain your children that convert and copy the videos manually.
You can sell it for few money (<5 usd? a good price, I think). If you make a free version, don't put ADs (many of them are inappropiate too).

I would suggest a free version with less videos and then a paid for a dollars that had the whole library

I appreciate the responses.
@RoberGalarga I definitely want to keep any version ad free as that is a problem I've had with other kids apps. That and in game purchases!
@zacthespack Good suggestion. I was contemplating that idea and will probably do the trial version with a small amount of videos and a full paid version with a larger number of videos.

Google Video

So.... now that wifi xooms finally got their google videos app, how long do you think us tab 10.1 peeps will have to wait?
I beieve pretty much all videos hosted by google have been ported to youtube.
Can't be rooted to view videos so I don't even care anymore.

Google video has full-length movies that you can rent. You won't find them on YouTube.
My buddy has a Xoom, and woke up the other day to find a video app icon on his main screen. He said it wasn't there before. So he tapped it, and it brought up all these movies that he can rent. The price was relatively high, however -- $3.99 for most movies. Why pay that when you can get movies elsewhere for 99 cents?
Just sayin' ...
You can actually rent and watch them through the browser on the tab even with root.
Google videos appeared on my gt10 after i flashed uekm7 touchwiz, but because im rooted, rental purchase through google checkout would keep failing. I imagine devs will work out a solution, but really at 4 dollars for a 24 hour rental, I wouldn't use it much anyway.
More looking forward to the honeycomb optimized Netflix app from Lenovo ideapad to be ported to gt10 soon!

[Q] Do you find 16GB enough?

Since Samsung is only releasing a 16GB version of the tablet here in Canada, there's no option for 32gb unless ordering from the US. After base o/s install, there is roughly 12GB free. Has anyone bought the 16GB and found it to too limiting? 12GB is probably plenty of room for quite a few app installs, but adding videos would kill it real quick. The omission of an sd card slot is really disappointing, but it is what it is. Buying an android tablet unfortunately seems to be more about making compromise than anything.
Rob
So far 16GB's seems to be more than enough for me. It really depends on how you set your self up. Here's a couple of things I've done to help give me a bit more usable room on my Tab.
1. Use online storage like Dropbox and Box.net and their android apps. With Dropbox you can get 2GB's free and if you get other people to sign up from a link you email them you can get more free storage. I got most of my family and a few friends to sign up this way, I'm up to 5GB's of free online storage with Dropbox alone. Box.net you can get another 5GB's of free online storage for free just for signing up. I use both of these to store all of my wallpapers, icons pictures and such. Saves a ton of room and makes everything available to me no matter where I am. You can use these sites from your Tab or your phone by using their apps or any laptop or desktop by going to their sites.
2. If you plan on using your Tab for work things like word docks, spreadsheets and PDF's... Use Google Docs, I've been using Google Docs for the last few years now and haven't even come close to using up the space they give you for free. I'm a chef and use it to keep all of my recipes, cost control documents... Again for the same reasons I stated above. I've also started using EverNote over the last year and now that I have my Tab I find myself using it even more. Being a chef I'm very much into keeping a running record of the food and dishes I make. With EverNote I can snap a picture with my eVo of a special or new dish and make a few key quick notes, then on the train ride home at the end of the day I can edit that note on my Tab to make it more detailed.
3. For your music you can use any number of online music storage sites. I use Googles Music Beta, again for the reasons i've stated before. I can get to everything in my collection from anywhere, on my phone, my Tab and any computer anywhere.
Those 3 things alone save a ton of space on my Tab as well as my eVo and make it very easy for me to access all of my stuff from anywhere.
It should leave you with more than enough space on your Tab for any number of apps. As for movies, just make sure that they are formated right. And how many times can you watch the same movie over again, once you've watched vid or movie just either delete it or one it to your computer.
I have over 50 apps installed on my Tab, all of the StarWars movies, and I mean all of them 1 through 6 and some other movie with Mat Damon in it. And I still have over 7GB's free memory.
Live in the cloud brother... Make thing a bit easier.

16GBs isn't enough for me. Typically most one hour 720P HD video clips will take up anywhere from 1.5 to 1.9GBs and that leaves me little room for music. Despite using spotify, dropbox, pandora, and netflix i still can't keep enough media to last me for a trip longer than 5 hours
A quick question to you guys: are the 32/64 bit versions not available anywhere in Europe? For me 16GB is definitely not enough. I am struggling with 32GB on my current Galaxy Tab 7"....

um ok. I guess you've never been on a long road trip or train ride. There is only so many times you can watch the same movie/video over again.
16GB is definitely enough for what most people use tablet for. But it's true that there are times where i do store HD movies in the tab and i wish i could store more HOWEVER it's definitely not enough to justify getting 32gb for $100 more
This has been discussed to some extend here: Is 16GB enough?
For me it's more than enough. With all the cloud space everywhere I don't need more. I have with me the stuff I really need/want and everything else is available only via an internet connection.
That might not be an option for someone else. That person needs to wait for/get a 32/64 GB model. I'm perfectly happy with the 16 GB.

That's what the USB adapter and two USB thumb drives are for.
64GB extra instead of 16GB extra for $100 extra.
with apps like google music and netflix i have yet to run out of space on my 16gb.
I bought the 16GB version today. I almost mail ordered a 32gb from the US, but then I thought if I have hardware issues I might be out of luck. I plan to get the USB adapter which I can only find on ebay right now.

HDMI out, Google play movies

SO I rented Death Proof from the play store, I hooked up my Prime to my Samsung TV, made sure my input was set to just scan, since 16x9 caused overscan, hit play and all I got was sound and no movie, unplug cable movie plays fine on Prime. So I thought OK maybe it's a streaming problem, so I downloaded it instead of streaming it, same result. Came to work today and hooked my monitor up with a different cable, same result.
My Prime isnt unlocked, just rooted. I am able to play other files and play games just fine over hdmi, but no go for play rentals?
Whats up with that google/Asus?

Please search the forum, the topic has already been discussed multiple times.
Due to copyrighted reason Google doesn't allow movie rented from the tablets to be transferred to a bigger screen.
Thanks for the reply.
You try to play by the rules (purchasing a rental) and they restrict that you can't watch it on the big screen, thats crap and makes people do the download thing.
I had the same question. I guess there will be no renting from Google, they really limited themselves, who wants to watch the movie on a 10 inch screen with a 46 inch in the room?

I was reading in another thread about Google's movies policy and it should be able to go full screen. Somethings messed up in the way the rentals are being handled.

I doubt it's Google policy but would lean toward drm laws and the mpaa.

Watching on your HDTV
To watch movies rented on Google Play on your HDTV, you'll need:
an HDTV that supports High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP)—check your tv manufacturer's website to see if your HDTV is HDCP compliant
a Micro-HDMI to HDMI cable or an MHL adapter and HDMI cable, depending on your device
Once you connect your device to your HDTV, the screen of your device should be mirrored on your HDTV (both display the same content), with the audio playing on your HDTV. If the video plays without audio on your HDTV, you may need to change the input in your HDTV's audio settings.

Google should never have agreed to MPAA terms for movie business segment. Root on android is really no different than administrator rights within windows.
Google gave up a lot to get rights for movie rights that few will use more than once. $5 to rent a movie to rent a movie that can only be viewed on a 10 inch (or smaller) screen without ability to output via HDMI? Can't imagine many, even the non tech savvy, to make the mistake of renting from Google Market more than once.
Someday the MPAA will realize that their attempts at preventing piracy only serve to promote it. Until they get a clue, Market will not be a viable source for movie rentals.

I meet those standards and I have the right cables and so forth. It looks pretty black and white to me that it should work.
I don't think root is causing the issue as people who haven't rooted can't get it to work, like someone else posted some flag is messed up somewhere.
EDIT: NM it seems rented videos are working fine on rooted Primes.

Mine is rooted and I've just rented and watched a movie directly on the Prime. However, I cannot see it on my TV.
I suppose it could be worse, they could just say F You, your rooted and no video at all. But this is the last time I rent anything from them until they get this straightened out. Has anyone tried playing it directly from the browser instead of through the play app?
Edit: Doesn't work, tried requesting desktop page, about:debug and setting browser to desktop, no dice.

I believe that it's working at all on rooted Primes is a bug in and of itself. Play movies will not play rental content on my rooted phone with a message saying as much.
Google movies do work on rooted devices, but they're not supposed to. If you look at the amazon/kindle system, they learned early on that root check is possible as a means of DRM control, but ultimately developed workarounds.
As far as the reason for the restrictions go, it's not a far cry to jump from hooking up HDMI to watch on your larger TV screen to hooking up to a projector and performing the movie in front of a crowded theater/auditorium.
Yes, it was possible to do the same thing with physical media in the past, but this is the direction digital DRM is going in. It's a very different story from the move of digital music to being DRM-free - there's no such thing as a standard mobile video player or file format to force publishers to release their grip the way there was for mp3.

Annnnnnnddddd this is the reason I will continue not to buy or rent movies.
When ps3 came out I bought about 10 blu-rays per month.
When Netflix came out I happily bought my subscription.
Well guess what.... haven't bought a blu-ray in probably about a year and a half and haven't had netflix for about 6 months.
Why? Because I feel like they treat us like criminals.
Even TV is ridiculous, few months ago I had thrown back a couple beers. I moved away from my hometown and was feeling football home sick. So I grab the remote and go to the NFL network so I could watch the packers. It says click here to order, so I click. Now it says call the 1800 number... so I sigh and call Verizon, thinking in 5 minutes ill be able to watch the game. After a long argument with the rep I hung up and illegally streamed it from an unnamed website.
Why? Well, to get the NFL network its $50 per year. No sweat I get to watch my team in high definition, good stuff.
Not really....
To get the NFL network I have to not only buy the NFL ticket, I also have to buy some premium package for another $10 per month. I told the rep that I didn't need other package and she said that was the only way to get the game.
So you know what? F?!# Verizon F?!# NFL and F?!# the movie and music industry.
I won't buy into this bulls?!# and I will continue to pirate away and only support my favorite artists.
If they spent half the money they spend on anti piracy on quality of product or ease of access then their profit margins would go way up.
Or.. lower prices and get higher volume, but I prefer higher quality.
Flame on.

Not saying it's right, wrong, or otherwise. I was just explaining the reasoning behind the unlikeliness of seeing this particular type of DRM disappear anytime soon. Video will (probably) always get ripped to a DRM-free version, but it won't usually start there as a native format.
Oh no worries. I'm nit arguing with anything anyone here said. I just read over it and instantly got frustrated. Between the experiences I've had and all this sopa crap its getting out of control. Everyone is so paranoid about piracy now a days no one remembers how to make content worth buying.
My wife and I loved the movie hangover, it was hilarious. We rented the hangover 2 the other day and watched about 25 minutes before turning it off. I mean I felt like we were watching the same movie.
Although I did find the new eminem and coldplay album to be pretty awesome. Bought both through google play.
Sorry didn't mean to derail this thread I just feel very strong about the lack of quality content compounded by the ever increasing security and stipulations.
Meanwhile steam is the only content provider that GETS IT.

Is there anywhere to find rentals that will work on HDMI out?
We all know that HDMI works on our tablets but is there anywhere to find movie rentals that our Prime can stream out to an HDMI TV? The family is leaving on a vacation and it would be nice to watch some movies on the TV in the room.

I want to like it, I really do. BUT...

The design of this thing is awesome. Pair it with those monster 14 pound EACH speakers and man, that's drool worthy.
However, this device is kinda confusing to me. Is it a dumbed down receiver? Is it a dumbed down Google TV device? I can play vids from YouTube and and Google Play and music and that's it?
Where are the shots of what ever interface this will have? Where is Netflix? Huluu Plus? Amazon Prime? This seems to be the most limited - as far as what can be done with it from the get-go - device I have seen El Goog push out in a long while. Sad.
As good as it looks, it seems rushed to me. Why pay $299 for something that is simply novelty and available in many different flavors already?
Till they add a bit to it, or someone hacks it and makes it much better. Sorry Goog, I pass.
While they were doing the presentation, I understood it as it was just a receiver that connects to some speakers or a tv, so once you connect to it (I forget if it was WIFI or NFC) you can just play music or videos on the speakers or tv; and anybody that connects to it is able to play what they want on it.
It looks great and all but for $300 its definitely not worth the price tag.
This is on the network so I hope that it has easy access to Windows shares and that it will be able to play 1080p MKVs with lossless audio.
I haven't played around with playback on devices.
Even though it is pricey if it has this full feature set then I may pick this up. Would be a nice improvement over plugging in a laptop to the TV.

It's $300 because it's supposedly actually manufactured in America... so do with that what you will
I'm still very confused as to what it is/how it works. Doesn't seem worthwhile.
seems like the coolest looking piece of crap.
The engadget preview says much of the price is because of the built in amp, which, IMHO is totally unnecessary. I have a surround sound system.. why would I want stereo sound from that puny little thing?
Drop the amp and $100 off the pricetag and this thing will sell itself. Oh, and unlock the damn thing. Only plays stuff from the play store? Google is starting to sound like apple...

Really? It has a USB port explicitly for the purpose of hacking it. I have no doubt the Nexus Q will be a cool device to own once there's enough dev support for it.
It seems like Google released the Nexus Q with the idea that the android community would figure out what to do with it.
Nexus q + dev support = sold. However I will wait for the support first instead of buying and hoping....
Its an interesting device, but I'm disappointed that they at least didn't add an "airplay" style connection for displaying your phone or tablet screen on the tv via wifi. That would at least make it more appealing for the price
I sat there during the keynote thinking what a killer feature this would have been for a google tv. Instead it's a more expensive and more limited device.
I came away from i/o feeling like the google tv is being de-prioritized and they want to push this device instead because it's locked down to google play content. There were zero mentions of google tv during either of the keynotes. There were sessions but after sitting through a few it seemed as if all the new and exciting things were happening in other product lines. I don't mean this as a dig at the google tv devs. I just think the company has made a cooporate decision to lock this down.
Maybe I'll feel a little different after unboxing it tonight and playing with it some but I just can't see myself getting on board this product line and I'm a google fanboy. It just feels like a limitations by design concept.

That's cool. But inconsistent. Not everyone is tech savvy enough to even flash anything and I would be more apt to group those individuals with ones who would use the banana plugs on the back. It doesn't take an audiophile to desire more than 2 channels of sound.
I think its a brilliant device and ill probably get one once the price goes down. I just think it may increase sales to offer one without the amp - is it really that big of a selling point?

Agreed. This isn't like our Android phones running custom ROMs. You buy an Android phone, ANY Android phone, and you can:
1. Make phone calls
2. Send text messages
3. Use email
4. Browse the web
5. Download, install, and use the full Play Store catalog of apps
All without any hacking at all. When you install a custom rom, you're basically getting a few added features, customization, optimization, maybe the ability to overclock or run a select few apps that need root. You know, little things that aren't necessary but are nice to have.
The Nexus Q is different because it's gimped right out of the box. You basically can't do anything with it, other than play music and videos from the Play Store only (and who even has a huge collection of that stuff?). Even the very first Apple TV was capable of streaming content through a local network, even if it was limited to stuff you added to your iTunes library.
I appreciate Google reaching out to the dev community, but they can't rely on them to do all their work for them. What the Nexus Q should have been was a tiny Android desktop computer, controllable directly with an Android phone using a specific app (something like Gmote) and able to run any and all Android apps. I'm excited when I see thumb-sized Android computers available for under $100. The NQ could have been a cooler, more premium version of that, but as it is, it's both overpriced AND has no features.
YouTube app
So not living in US forces me to use Music and the YouTube app. Now it's time to do some raging.
Playing youtube vids on my tv is awesome through the app and all that. But I want to be able to play several videos. I have several playlists but the only option on a playlist in the youtube app is to delete it. Opening the playlists gives you the possibility to play one (and only one) video in a row. It really sucks. I don't want to open the app every time a video has ended :/
Guys what are you complaining about? Your where given cool toy for free because you are developers. You are suppose to find better applications for it . Just do it. Few years ago you had T-Mobile android phone without anything useful on it , nobody completed

All you guys in here complaining are just not dev or inspiring to be one cause from what I seen you're able to load a launcher to it from adb and stream netflix in 1080 so you guys dont really understand android or google yet but you will.
Sadly, I will buy a multitude of these for a project if someone can get the damn thing rooted and unlocked...

Netflix and Amazon Prime video does play in full HD

Amazon Prime Video app is in full HD.
Netflix is also available in full HD.... Simply log into Netflix through the Chrome browser and watch in full screen HD, rather than using the Netflix app!
Sorted.
:good:
It's the Netflix app that is the problem.
Sorry further testing and Netflix is running at 540 not 1080p.
Perfectly watchable though and better than 480 being reported.
Well... perfectly watchable in your opinion. Totally unexcusable in mine. They are selling this as a MEDIA tablet. And a customer should watch stuff at DVD resolution? In 2018?
ROTFL
@gorman42 I can understand your position, but all DRM is crap and there are so many different solutions for that. Following your argumentation every producer of a device needs to support all of the different solutions ... Ok, widevine probably is a bit different because it's provided by Google and you do not need to pay a license fee but nevertheless the producer needs to implement and to test ... which might be time consuming and costy. Only looking from a producers point of view
Ok, first of all. Sorry to the OP. Re-reading myself I see that I came off sounding aggressive. It's not your fault and I offer my excuses to you. Sincerely.
To @AndDiSa: that's the main point. It's Widevine. It's used by all major streaming services (Netflix and Prime Video use it, don't know about others). It's free. In my opinion if you want to come out with a media tablet, defining it as such, with an HD+ screen... well, you do have to support it. If you don't, you don't get my money. For me it's a matter of principle.
And note that I'm very against DRM, personally. But for kids and family, generally speaking, streaming services offer a level of convenience that can't be beaten.
Saw a reply from Huawei on their UK Mobile twitter feed - promising an update sometime in the future for Netflix HD - but no date yet...
