[Q] Allshare cast dongle problem - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I received my official Allshare cast dongle today and although it is working I can't seem to get videos that I play to appear on BOTH screens at the same time. On various youtube reviews/demos, I have seen people playing videos with it appearing on the TV and the GS3 screen simulaneously. When I play a video it only appears on the TV and on the GS3 screen I get either a black background (e.g. youtube player) or a black background with the allshare icon logo on it and the player controls (standard video player).
What do I need to do to get the video to appear on both screens at the same time?
Cheers,
Richard.

The only way is to install another video player because if you saw a video showing doing both then they been misleading you.

Im sure its possible. The YouTube videos i have seen are not just ones recorded at the official Galaxy S3 launch demo booths but also from a fair number of unofficial user demos using their home TV's. I doubt they are all deliberately faked.
Also the videos all use the standard built in Galaxy S3 video player too.

I've got an Allshare Cast myself and it has no settings so Samsung must have fiddled it up to have both screens working because obviously it looks better in a booth with both displays running.
And I think Samsung turn the display off when watching videos because obviously you not gonna be watching both and it saves a load of power, so guess you just have to wait for someone to create a mod to get that done.

The Allshare cast does NOT mirror when playing video.
What worries me is when using the video player, it permanently leaves the Allshare logo on the screen. It is very very dim, but surely that could still result in screen burn after many hours of video watching this way!

There is some lag, yes. It doesn't make games unplayable, but it could put you at a disadvantage for multiplayer. Some games which are currently free on the Samsung app store are free and have optimisations for this system. Modern Combat 3 maintains resolution but suffers framerate drops sometimes in dual screen mode. Asphalt 7 maintains framerate but lowers resolution when the screen gets busy. The TV displays the main game, and the phone has a map of the course which is quite cool.
There is a bit of luck here, as it depends on the quality of WiFi signal in your home and interference can affect how well this system works. Certainly it has its uses though and I suspect there will be firmware improvements for it.

bugger, I wish they'd hurry up and release to TV version, I have a top of the range samsung tv which will work as the cast dongle when they get around to enabling it, i'm hoping latency will be slightly less too as its a straight hop to the TV bypassing the HDMI connections.

Hi, I have had my dongle for a few weeks now. Few problems and very upset with lack of support from samsung. I read you're message while trying to solve my issues. I have just used vlc player from the market and it plays video on screen and the tv together. Hope it helps. Wonder if you know how to make the image fit the my tv screen, it cuts edges of at the moment. Thanks and good luck

Thanks. Yes I since discovered that VLC let you do the mirrored playback after looking very closely at some youtube videos that demonstrated this mode.
Out of interest what other problems are you having? I haven't had time to test mine all that much yet. One thing that annoys me is that there is no on/off button so I have to unplug it to turn it off (I have it hooked up to my HDMI auto switch).

I can't get it to fit tv properly, sometimes requires two or three attempts to connect. Streaming Iplayer has audio sync problems, there is no alternative for audio out to a sound system and today it disconnected and refused to connect for ages. Had to unplug and reset with button at least 3 times. When is first got it my phone had no option for allshare and Samsung don't have any support on it. No one could tell me that I had to update through Kies on my desktop to get this option. All in all I do like it and use it loads, I'm just hoping the new official jb firmware will increase stability. Funny enough the guy I bought it of on ebay here in Turkey emailed me asking for confirmation it works as he has had loads of negative feedback from selling them. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt Samsung to create some support pages. But as usual xda dev prevails.

I have noticed that if you change channel on the phone it automatically disconnects the allshare connection. I never turn it off for this reason. But not very eco friendly I know.

There is a firmware update in the Samsung app store for the allshare cast dongle, available today. So far, there is a rapid connection established to the unit, stable. Sound issues also are resolved so far. Great update.

Going out to get some landscape shots in the mountains today. Panaorama inc!
I tried this feature inside my house. For some reason when I click record the screen goes a little darker and that's the way the video comes out as well.
Very cool never the less. Maybe ill try it tomorrow outside.

That's the way photography works... Slow motion is more frames per second, which translates to faster shutter speeds which allow less light into the sensor. Hence darker video unless the iso is boosted, then it gets too grainy... Good light will make a big difference...
It makes NO SENSE (no pun) for the phone to not have slow motion HD recording. None. Buddy of mine at work has the Resound, and we record 720p slow motion all the time. Checked the file's resolution, and it is full 720p. Why would a NEWER phone from the same manufacturer with better hardware and newer software... backpedal?
Pop Player (Speed-Control Video Player)
I highly recommend the free Pop Player app. I recently made a couple of reviews on it on YouTube.
This new video player allows the user to utilize speed-control. The slow-motion
and speeded-motion are extremely smooth too and audio syncs perfectly with
the video at any speed. It can definitely be useful for athletes and students.
Some people I know even use it to replay their golf swings in slow-motion
in order to improve their form.
This player plays MP4 files that contain H264 and AC codecs.

Why does a video player need all those permissions? Read phone state and identity, retrieve running apps, kill background processes, discover accounts, market billing service. It may all be legit, but I wasn't taking any chances. Deleted the app without even running it as soon as I saw the permissions. Should have noticed it before installing the app.

Definitely reboot. About the 3rd time I fired it up after installing some add ons it began running like a charm. The first time you use it there may be a very long start and turn off period. That's ok.
The XBMC interface is running smoothly on my TP.
When i try to stream (WiFI) a X264 movie with DTS over SMB it stutters like mad.
I hope this is because of network speed. I'll try to play the same movie over USB, i hope this works better.

It is software only. I have always used it as a content streamer though, not much as a local player.
I wonder if this can and will support HDMI CEC.
I gave it ago on my Prime running the stock rom, i was quite impressed with how well it worked.
I could map my SMB network shares on my Windows Home Server perfectly and XBMC would stream anything SD fine, 720p MKV played some what ok with random frame drops / jerkiness every couple of seconds, 1080p video was very jerky and not really any watchable.
Plugins such as the BBC iPlayer worked (sometimes buggy), YouTube and Ted Talks also worked very well.

Very impressed so far, a big well done and thanks to the XBMC team :good:

I may be wrong but I believe that these versions of XBMC don't support hardware acceleration just yet. I haven't been on top of the development of this app but that tidbit was enough for me to wait for the final release.

There are two builds AFAIK

I had the same issue... It's because somehow it doesn't work when your volume isn't at anything but 100%. If it's set to the loudest it can be, the sound works fine.
It's not dead yet. Plenty of ROM development going on in the dev section.

XBMC 12 Frodo
Has anyone tried XBMC 12 Frodo RC3 on ATP? I have a TF201. I'm a long time user of XMBC since the original Xbox, and the app looks great. I'm very happy to see this. But unfortunately, with this version, the videos lag quite a bit and I get absolutely no audio. I've tried changing the audio out options and playing music/video with no luck. I did not yet try pushing the video/music out through HDMI yet, but not really much point yet.
Anyone else trying have experience with this?

Youtube app never fully buffers a video

Hello, recently (like android 4.2) youtube has decided to stop buffering videos whenever it feels like it, which means the video just hangs when it gets there with the little buffer wheel spinning. Sometimes it will continue to load the video after it stops, but most of the time it just locks up the whole app and you have to force close it and re-launch it. I have tried clearing app cache and data and what not, but nothing has helped. I even tried turning off wifi optimization, but that didn't help either. I thought that maybe it was my ISP, but the same videos in the browser play just fine with no buffering at all. It seems to do this regardless of the length of the video. I get about 30mbps down and 5.5up when I run speedtest on my tablet, so I don't think it's the connection that's causing the issue. I should also mention that this happens regardless of quality. It will load relatively quickly to a certain point, then just never buffer again. I fear the only way to resolve this issue will be a factory reset.
This Reddit thread solved my YouTube issues. I have fios, fyi.

I get this! All started when I upgraded to android 4.3! Its highly annoying, and the only way. I have found to fix it is to kill the YouTube app, find the video and place you where at, and then go from there
I also had this issue before the YouTube app was recently updated

You don't have to force close youtube by the way, simply pressing the home button and going back to youtube afterwards does the job for me as well.
I hope they will fix that issue soon
This sucks so bad! I just got this awesome nexus 10 and I literally cat go 5 seconds without buffer. Do I have a bad unit? How do I fix this? I can surf the web just fine so it isn't my wifi to the nexus 10.

Try an app called "Viral' from the playstore. I started using it as it can play YouTube music videos in the background while I'm using some other app. Recently I've been having issues with the default YouTube app and discovered that Viral did not have those issues. It may be worth giving it a try. I'm using a 4.4 custom ROM linked in my signature so your mileage may vary.
The issue I'm having is YouTube stops half way through a video and simply will not continue playing that video from the stop point, even after a reboot. I can play another video but it too stops half way or so in.
The YouTube app isn't NEARLY as good as it should, I'm still enraged and disgusted about the fact that the YouTube app on iPad is so MUCH better than the Android one, it has gestures to let you toggle full screen , it has pull down to refresh on lists (like the pull down to refresh on the gmail app), if you exit the app and come back, the video you were playing doesn't have to be rebuffered again (it keeps a few seconds buffered so you can watch the video quickly) AND worst of all, the iOS app lets YOU choose the resolution of your stream, what you get isn't an HD "on" and "off" toggle, you get proper choosing, like on the website, you get to choose between 240p, 360p, 480p, 720p AND 1080p, HD on our app is 720p, not 1080p, actually Google disabled the option from all android apps.
After that update I lost a lot of faith in Google, no wonder the iPad has so many more high quality apps, if you want devs to take you seriously, then YOU should give proper support to your devices, 1080p streams should have been available ever since our N10 was released, this **** is just unacceptable.
Thanks @3DSammy for the tip about the Viral app. :highfive:
Well, I figured out the issue, but not a fix. I think it's tied to comcast's router. I set up an old linksys with a broadcomm wireless unit as a repeater and I haven't had a single issue since. Numerous router resets and devices restores did nothing. It doesn't make any sense though because it only happens with the YouTube app, but same settings and everything I was able to watch a video completely on my nexus 10 on the repeater that I could not get through on comcast's router/modem(Aaris unit). It's strange though because my repeater connects wirelessly to my comcast router, so it goes nexus 10 to linksys repeater to comcast's router. It could be a security issue I guess, but I didn't look into it.

Samsung TAB S3 - Amazon Prime Video App - Only SD streaming No HD No HDR

SOLVED
Hello,
Love my Tab S3.
Amazon donĀ“t support HD streaming with Amazon Prime Video App on this tablet. (only SD streaming)
With my old Note 2014 Tablet HD streaming was possible.
With Iphone 7 Amazon Prime App shows HD content. (in the same Network - 50 Mbits)
One Solution is to watch Prime Videos with Chrome Browser in Desktopmode.
But the video does not always run smoothly.
I have asked at Amazon Support - but have no great hopes for competent help.
Maybe someone can help?
is this the Amazon video app from the Samsung app store?

How do I know when hdr kicks in it if it's even working. At bottom it just shows 1080p (for man in high castle)
Does only amazon video support her in this tablet right now (Netflix?) . Is the tab s3 hdr 10 compliant or is it its own proprietary format ? So if I load a hdr 10 video on to it will it play in hdr on Samsung's stock video player (and how do I know, for example my Samsung TV always says "an hdr video is playing and brightens the screen when I do
What actually does real HDR on Tab S3 or S8+? I have both devices, and have not seen any HDR content actually availible yet. Would be nice to see in real life, even if just a sample clip or something.
ya and how to know if its active
I have Galaxy Tab S3 as well and was wandering how can I make use of HDR feature. I have called Netflix support, the answer is simple: Android Netflix app do not support HDR streaming. Only TVs and Xbox app but not Android app. I also checked Amazon Prime help section. It says on Android devices following is support it: SD and HD. The UHD and HDR on TVs only. Even if I choose HDR title on Prime while playback it only shows 1080p, not HDR.
So there you have it, even both Netflix and Amazon Prime have HDR content, Android apps do not stream/playback HDR. Hope this will change with future updates.
Any more progress on this? I'm finding it a little frustrating that the guys over at the S8 threads are able to play local HDR videos over the native Video Player while we can't seem to be able to.
would love to know myself. kind of frustrating.

hi. do you mind explaining how it is you know the Amazon app is indeed running in HDR? is there some visual cues?
I've noticed today in the UK anyway, that the Amazon Prime Video App now offers HDR and Ultra HD for a limited number of series, seems to work really well, Netflix is expected to make UHD/HDR available on Android later in the year.
Like has been said though it needs to be installed via Galaxy Apps, not the Play Store.
Yes, i contacted amazon prime video, the only device listed adide ftom tvs apis galaxy s7, and ask her to update and include our tab s3
How can I play Amazon video in hd? I have contacted the support but they can't help me.

HDR Video

Hi everyone. I have owned the Tab S3 for several weeks now, and it's definitely a great tablet.
One thing I have not been able to do/confirm yet is playing HDR video.
I don't have an amazon prime video membership (I'm already paying enough for streaming services!), so that avenue is closed off. However, I've tried to follow the details this thread (intended for S8 phone users but also meant to work for the Tab S3) to get some HDR video playing, and as far as I can tell it's not working.
The S8 thread has some HDR videos that I've downloaded, and I've used the Samsung Video Library player app, but I don't get any confirmation that the videos are playing in HDR. Supposedly there's meant to be some "HDR" text that shows when the controls are visible and a HDR video is playing, but I get nothing. I've tried putting the videos in internal memory and on a (very fast) SD card, I've tried renaming the file extensions, I've tried changing the tablet display settings, I've tried downloading the video library app from the google play store and then the samsung app store... but as far as I know, the videos are not playing in HDR.
Part of the problem is probably the lack of Android video player apps that can play HDR, even the netflix app, which is pretty frustrating. But as far as I can tell, I should be able to play some HDR stuff with the instructions from the S8 thread.
Has anyone else been able to get this working? It's pretty frustrating having such a great screen and not being able to use it fully.
I can confirm your experiences on QF3 firmware. Files from the S8 thread works fine on S8 (and my LG E6 OLED tv). But no go on the Tab S3. Hopefully Samsung will enable it in a future firmware update...

On the Tab S3? Yes, the colors are washed out and plain wrong (worse than the same clip in SDR would be), which is normal when playing a 10bit or HDR file on a device without the proper codec/decoding capabilities.

I have the BBC Planet Earth series on my tab and I thought the colors were great. These are 4K HDR episodes where one file is 14-15 gb.

Just noticed a thread in the android subreddit.
Supposedly there's a new update going out for the youtube app that is enabling S8 users to get HDR video playback. Hopefully the Tab S3 will get something similar!! Fingers crossed.

HDR Works. In Netflix it's conspicuous but you will notice easily in Daredevil church scenes then download 4k x265 HDR file of the same epsiode. I did this with punisher. Yep torr me did yesh. The initial episode where he burns the jacket and also the sandwich scene with the water tank in rear. Although I did note it seemed to be 1080p in Netflix.
The file played on Samsung player but audio was 7.0 so not supported. So I used MX player but note this doesn't seem to support HDR but I couldn't see the difference. If they haven't stated HDR support specifically for devices which have capable displays (google mobile HDR premium devices) then it isn't there. Only the Samsung gallery will activate the HDR display and the video app from Galaxy Apps won't.
Amazon is another story it works wonders and if you turn the volume up with physical key and with no controls or options but only clean video playing you will see it turn greenish instead of regular blue... You can minimise as it plays and see your home screen as the HDR of display is active. This is a hardware solution and with Amazon being a firm partner to us it will come as no surprise but we won't provide support for hdr10+ support fully atleast until 2019.
Netflix now is a software HDR that means it doesn't activate the HDR display but setting up cinema mode in display settings will do the trick but the volume turn green test won't work here. Only the video will be HDR and if you do anything that is UI interaction thus HDR is immediately disabled by the AMOLED CINEMA setting.
This is how all of this works. But hey, Dolby Vision is costly no wonder only the s8 competitor had it and not the note 8 one as that guy's screen is P-OLED and blotchy

Boy have I got an answer for y'all love this one...
Ok so MX player has H.265 10bits see attached pic. I had this Spiderman movie (see attached for details). So I figured finally this had to work. Now this Spiderman Homecoming is a HDR file.
Previously I used to use MX player with 1080p 10bit and 12bit files obviously 12bit didn't work works on pc but I didn't know back then you'd need a 12 bit display aka Dolby Vision compatible basically.
Back to it then...
So look at this scene of spiderman in SW and HW+ it's astonishing, the difference.
I have not seen such differences with 1080p 10bit display but back then I didn't have tab s3 so no wonder I was foolin myslef haha.
So when Tom Holland aka Peter Parker is removing his clothes you can cleary see the stark contrast. I set 100 brightness and AMOLED CINEMA because apparently Adaptive Mode is really bad and I keep reading ya gotta do this. HDR or not color modes are always working on anything. So true HDR COLOR doesn't mean you can't set color modes. But the Cinema one probably has the Industry standard for HDR gamut like DCP3 for Photoshop and such.
That's it folks, enjoy knowing you're making the best use of the gorgeous display but it gotta be h265 HDR so probably a mkv.
Also the Samsung player from galaxy apps couldn't play 5.1 or 7.1 AC3 and such audio so I had to go for MX thankfully now I found out it's all GOOD. But still Amazon I think does its on thing coz when you increase volume the bar turns green instead of the blue for HDR videos. ( Also attached)
I took the spidey pic on OnePlus 5 with HDR ON, attached that too.
Thus CONCLUSIVE!
A side note the Colors of a HDR video on a non compatible display will look worse than a normal SDR video which means yeah when you try to play a HDR file it will look that washed out which makes it worse so don't bother playing HDR videos on non HDR devices!
By the way 50 shades darker Unrated UHD HDR is such a treat but unfortunately my external hard disc gave up right before I was about to take a pic of Christian taking Ana on his shoulder to the swimming pool at the end of the movie.
That scene truly shows HDR capabilities on my TAB S3.
When they are on the stairs it's like I'm there too. The feeling ya know if you claustrophobic of darkness you'll feel it. Dolby Vision would be better I suppose but HDR is still felt just not ya know perfect so yeah.
I hope the hard disk works again I'm Leaving it untouched to a day.
It made a click sound but it also does then when you unplug the wire after unmount so pray for me thanks and enjoy... God damn it my whole 1.5 TB of HDR collection was on that!
Ok so I tried something it was a flop apparently screen grab doesn't capture HDR I used AZ screen recorder.
Anyways have a look but by pics you can see it's HDR.
I'll add another one taken from a camera.
That should show the difference but why doesn't XDA app let me upload videos always go to network error...
And no it's not my network problem!
p.s. the golden pic is how it looks fell in love with her all over again all were HDR shots on OnePlus tab brightness was 100 percent the exposure is different of phone camera that's why they look different
Here you are. Hope you're able to discern the difference.
Also just noticed in Samsung player when I did max battery save and player a HDR video since auto rotate is off when you click on the rotate there is a split second of washed out color.
This goes to show that HDR hardware of the Screen gets off when video is not playing it's like turning the HDR on and off in windows 10 display settings.
Suffice it to say 4k will not display in 4k but 1440p for local files though it does look sharper than a native 1440p file. Amazon prime video only goes up to 1080p and so does netflix because it supports only HD, SUPERHD AND 4K. I rest my HDR case Tab S3 SCREEN is better than my KU6470 TV!

Thank you. So basically this is an example of false advertisement by Samsung, because there is no true HDR on Netflix on Samsung's mobile devices. I have a Galaxy S9 and can confirm that. HDR videos on Netflix look dark and dull.
