Youtube app never fully buffers a video - Nexus 10 General

Hello, recently (like android 4.2) youtube has decided to stop buffering videos whenever it feels like it, which means the video just hangs when it gets there with the little buffer wheel spinning. Sometimes it will continue to load the video after it stops, but most of the time it just locks up the whole app and you have to force close it and re-launch it. I have tried clearing app cache and data and what not, but nothing has helped. I even tried turning off wifi optimization, but that didn't help either. I thought that maybe it was my ISP, but the same videos in the browser play just fine with no buffering at all. It seems to do this regardless of the length of the video. I get about 30mbps down and 5.5up when I run speedtest on my tablet, so I don't think it's the connection that's causing the issue. I should also mention that this happens regardless of quality. It will load relatively quickly to a certain point, then just never buffer again. I fear the only way to resolve this issue will be a factory reset.

This Reddit thread solved my YouTube issues. I have fios, fyi.

Edit: oops this apparently.might be a problem with the new YouTube app.

I get this! All started when I upgraded to android 4.3! Its highly annoying, and the only way. I have found to fix it is to kill the YouTube app, find the video and place you where at, and then go from there
I also had this issue before the YouTube app was recently updated
Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk 4

I'm having the exact same issue! I might get it to play one video and the it buffers constantly. Anybody else have this issue? I'm running stock 4.3 uprooted. YouTube works fine on my s4 and laptop, but hangs on the Nexus 10!

Happens on my moto x too.

Can also confirm on Nexus 10.

My devices:
Nexus 10 - Stock Rooted
Nook Tablet - CM10.1

Same problem here.
You don't have to force close youtube by the way, simply pressing the home button and going back to youtube afterwards does the job for me as well.
I hope they will fix that issue soon

This sucks so bad! I just got this awesome nexus 10 and I literally cat go 5 seconds without buffer. Do I have a bad unit? How do I fix this? I can surf the web just fine so it isn't my wifi to the nexus 10.

Try an app called "Viral' from the playstore. I started using it as it can play YouTube music videos in the background while I'm using some other app. Recently I've been having issues with the default YouTube app and discovered that Viral did not have those issues. It may be worth giving it a try. I'm using a 4.4 custom ROM linked in my signature so your mileage may vary.
The issue I'm having is YouTube stops half way through a video and simply will not continue playing that video from the stop point, even after a reboot. I can play another video but it too stops half way or so in.

The YouTube app isn't NEARLY as good as it should, I'm still enraged and disgusted about the fact that the YouTube app on iPad is so MUCH better than the Android one, it has gestures to let you toggle full screen , it has pull down to refresh on lists (like the pull down to refresh on the gmail app), if you exit the app and come back, the video you were playing doesn't have to be rebuffered again (it keeps a few seconds buffered so you can watch the video quickly) AND worst of all, the iOS app lets YOU choose the resolution of your stream, what you get isn't an HD "on" and "off" toggle, you get proper choosing, like on the website, you get to choose between 240p, 360p, 480p, 720p AND 1080p, HD on our app is 720p, not 1080p, actually Google disabled the option from all android apps.
After that update I lost a lot of faith in Google, no wonder the iPad has so many more high quality apps, if you want devs to take you seriously, then YOU should give proper support to your devices, 1080p streams should have been available ever since our N10 was released, this **** is just unacceptable.

Thanks @3DSammy for the tip about the Viral app. :highfive:

Well, I figured out the issue, but not a fix. I think it's tied to comcast's router. I set up an old linksys with a broadcomm wireless unit as a repeater and I haven't had a single issue since. Numerous router resets and devices restores did nothing. It doesn't make any sense though because it only happens with the YouTube app, but same settings and everything I was able to watch a video completely on my nexus 10 on the repeater that I could not get through on comcast's router/modem(Aaris unit). It's strange though because my repeater connects wirelessly to my comcast router, so it goes nexus 10 to linksys repeater to comcast's router. It could be a security issue I guess, but I didn't look into it.

[Q] Youtube HD videos buffering a lot

As mentioned in the title, youtube HD videos seems to buffer a lot. I have a pretty good internet connection, constantly get around 10 - 12Mbps download speed. I don't have buffering problems on my laptop or my phone.
Anyone else see this and any setting that might help? Currently I'm turning off HD on videos to prevent buffering but ideally don't want to do that.

now I really dont have that problem due to my difference in internet speed but when I use my 4g from my thunderbolt *around that speed* I do notice the buffering problem only if there are more than one person using the connection at once. just for research, try and see what happens if only you are using the connection (turn off or disable other tech) and see if it actually makes a difference
I have to concur, youtube on Android tablets is a bit subpar. It never buffered this much on my iPad.
I get the same problem here, my pc and my phone load quickly while my GT seems to buffer very often while watching HD.

This is a little weird cuz in my house it backwards, my galaxy tab play YouTube flawlessly but my ipad which pretty much belongs to my 3 year old son, seems to buffer often.
SGT 10.1 uplink initiative
Thought it was just me. Mine buffers a lot using the youtube app.
At times it will freeze during playback. I have to uncheck the HD for it to eventually start playing again.
I haven't noticed it as much if I play it through the browser.

The question is does this reveal yet another weakness in tegra 2 or is this a coding issue with the app??
So many videos either buffer go choppy or fc.
Gears of war 3 ashes to ashes trailer by machinima fc every time.
Im almost certain that it is a coding issue. As it was said above, i only notice the buffer problem in the youtube app, it works fine in the browser.

it happens using any browser as well. i remember reading about this issue on the ipad too and people had some mixed results by changing DNS settings but i think it was more of a placebo effect. it's definitely a problem with this tablet though.
for me, it's just the YouTube app.. viewing on browser is fine, so it's a coding issue with the app. I suggest using the Feedback option under the app menu to report this issue. Google needs to hear from us about this.
watching it in the browser introduces a different issue, however - everything above 480 is out of sync.
Same here. Seems tobe a problem with the YouTube app. Smooth streaming HD when opened in stock browser but some buffering in app. My browser had no problems with 480 either. Hope google fixes and updates youtube app soon.
In the Youtube app it's either HD playback or grainy. There does not seem to be anything in between.

same here!!
It buffers a lot! I have to wait for 5mins+ for a 3mins video.
Anyone had success with muktitasking youtube app and other app?? I dont actually mind if youtube app could be left behind, but everytime i left it to another app. All the buffer's gone and video buffer was resetted to zero!
Same here...
I've got the same issue, but it only happens sometimes. I've noticed this happens more often when I pause a video, rewind, or when I'm watching a particularly long video (50 min or so). I doubt it's a problem with my network because my PC can stream the video just fine.
Same here, very annoying!

[Q] Allshare cast dongle problem

I received my official Allshare cast dongle today and although it is working I can't seem to get videos that I play to appear on BOTH screens at the same time. On various youtube reviews/demos, I have seen people playing videos with it appearing on the TV and the GS3 screen simulaneously. When I play a video it only appears on the TV and on the GS3 screen I get either a black background (e.g. youtube player) or a black background with the allshare icon logo on it and the player controls (standard video player).
What do I need to do to get the video to appear on both screens at the same time?
Cheers,
Richard.
The only way is to install another video player because if you saw a video showing doing both then they been misleading you.
Im sure its possible. The YouTube videos i have seen are not just ones recorded at the official Galaxy S3 launch demo booths but also from a fair number of unofficial user demos using their home TV's. I doubt they are all deliberately faked.
Also the videos all use the standard built in Galaxy S3 video player too.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
I've got an Allshare Cast myself and it has no settings so Samsung must have fiddled it up to have both screens working because obviously it looks better in a booth with both displays running.
And I think Samsung turn the display off when watching videos because obviously you not gonna be watching both and it saves a load of power, so guess you just have to wait for someone to create a mod to get that done.
The Allshare cast does NOT mirror when playing video.
What worries me is when using the video player, it permanently leaves the Allshare logo on the screen. It is very very dim, but surely that could still result in screen burn after many hours of video watching this way!

There is some lag, yes. It doesn't make games unplayable, but it could put you at a disadvantage for multiplayer. Some games which are currently free on the Samsung app store are free and have optimisations for this system. Modern Combat 3 maintains resolution but suffers framerate drops sometimes in dual screen mode. Asphalt 7 maintains framerate but lowers resolution when the screen gets busy. The TV displays the main game, and the phone has a map of the course which is quite cool.
There is a bit of luck here, as it depends on the quality of WiFi signal in your home and interference can affect how well this system works. Certainly it has its uses though and I suspect there will be firmware improvements for it.

bugger, I wish they'd hurry up and release to TV version, I have a top of the range samsung tv which will work as the cast dongle when they get around to enabling it, i'm hoping latency will be slightly less too as its a straight hop to the TV bypassing the HDMI connections.

Hi, I have had my dongle for a few weeks now. Few problems and very upset with lack of support from samsung. I read you're message while trying to solve my issues. I have just used vlc player from the market and it plays video on screen and the tv together. Hope it helps. Wonder if you know how to make the image fit the my tv screen, it cuts edges of at the moment. Thanks and good luck

Thanks. Yes I since discovered that VLC let you do the mirrored playback after looking very closely at some youtube videos that demonstrated this mode.
Out of interest what other problems are you having? I haven't had time to test mine all that much yet. One thing that annoys me is that there is no on/off button so I have to unplug it to turn it off (I have it hooked up to my HDMI auto switch).
I can't get it to fit tv properly, sometimes requires two or three attempts to connect. Streaming Iplayer has audio sync problems, there is no alternative for audio out to a sound system and today it disconnected and refused to connect for ages. Had to unplug and reset with button at least 3 times. When is first got it my phone had no option for allshare and Samsung don't have any support on it. No one could tell me that I had to update through Kies on my desktop to get this option. All in all I do like it and use it loads, I'm just hoping the new official jb firmware will increase stability. Funny enough the guy I bought it of on ebay here in Turkey emailed me asking for confirmation it works as he has had loads of negative feedback from selling them. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt Samsung to create some support pages. But as usual xda dev prevails.

I have noticed that if you change channel on the phone it automatically disconnects the allshare connection. I never turn it off for this reason. But not very eco friendly I know.

There is a firmware update in the Samsung app store for the allshare cast dongle, available today. So far, there is a rapid connection established to the unit, stable. Sound issues also are resolved so far. Great update.

[Q] Youtube Issues

Okay, I am either losing my mind, or there is something seriously wrong with the Youtube Android app. I have a Nexus 10 running CM 10.1 (have also run PA and stock) as well as a Galaxy S3 running Beans (previously CM10). On both of these devices, Youtube can't seem to reliably play for more than 4 minutes at a time. Furthermore, any time I try to seek forward in a video, the player crashes. Finally, every time I click a Youtube link from another application, the video will not load; I have to go to a different video and go back to the one I was trying to watch. Is everyone having these problems? Is there anything I can do to help alleviate these issues? I was planning on using my Nexus 10 to watch online lectures on Youtube, but it will be of little use for that if it can't play more than 4 minutes of video and I am unable to seek to my previous location!
Try finding a way to uninstall the app and then reinstall it. Maybe using a apk file? It could be the YouTube app that comes with the ROMs on your devices are either very buggy or might be corrupted. My YouTube app currently works fine on stock ROM but I have not yet tried cm10 so I'm not quite sure. Hope this helps
Sent from my Nexus 7,
That's an issue with CM ROMs I believe. Had the issue on CM10. Try setting the quality to HQ in settings. That's the way it worked on mine.
Or alternately you can try tubemate app

[Q] Play Store App Demo Videos Don't Play

On my Nexus 9, in the Google Play Store, when I try to watch the demo video for any app, it will only play about 1 second of the video. Anyone else have this problem? Please reply either way. I would like to know if its working for anyone else.
Thanks!
Same for me. I first thought it was WiFi sucking, but its too consistent, its a bug on n9, works fine on my nexus 5.
Thanks. I thought the same thing and I have also tested on the same WiFi with my Nexus 5, both running Android 5.0.1 and it works on Nexus 5. Anyone know if this has been reported?
Ditto. Nexus 7 on Lollipop. Same issue. Tried all the normal debugging methods with the play store and video players.

Ditto on Nexus 9 here also.
I have the issue on my Shield Tablet running 5.0.1
I went into the developer options and unticked use Nuplayer, rebooted, that got it working for a while before it stopped again.
Ticking and unticking that box now has no effect.
Nexus 9 on 5.0.1
I see I am not the only one that has this issue. I did notice that if you hit the settings icon lower right corner of the screen. You have an option to select quality which doesn't seem to stick. But it also has a youtube link that if you tap, takes you to the youtube app and plays the video just fine through the youtube app itself.
Also when listening to music through the google play music app, when it has an option to play the music video, the same thing happens .
I have tried messing with the NuPlayer and AwesomePlayer, rebooting etc. and can only get 1 video to play before its back to not playing again.
I saw that a similar issue was reported to google where no videos could be played but this seems different? Can anyone confirm if its the same or different? and/or if google is working on a fix?
Exact same issue here on Nexus 9. Videos play for about half a second then stop. This happens in Google Play store previews, and Google Music videos. I have tried everything, including restarts, clearing cache, deleting/reinstalling all related apps, adjusting Nuplayer setting, and even factory reset. My Nexus 5 has no problems, so it's clearly a Nexus 9 bug. I tried contacting Google and they gave me the typical 'turn your tablet off by holding the power button for a whooooole 2 seconds....' response. I'm a long time Nexus fan, but I do get tired of these bugs.
Anyone found a solution?
It's not just a Nexus 9 problem, I'd already posted it doesn't work on my Shield tablet and I upgraded my old N7 2012 to 5.0.2 yesterday and it doesn't work on that either.
I don't think there is any solution sadly.
Just uninstall latest youtube update from playstore and it will work fine again.
Stupid google didn't fix this issue yet.
Wow, uninstalling youtube updates actually did work! Thanks!
Worked for me too, thank you
Yup Really puzzles me why google didn't fix this yet.
My back cover was also flexing a bit around middle and upper right (when looking from the back side). That was a pretty easy fix. Now its solid as a rock. If anyone has that problem I could upload a fix on youtube.
Besides above problems, I absolutely love this device.. Imo it's hand down the best android tablet to date, despite these flaws.
If you upgrade to YouTube v10, this will also fox the problem.
If you don't see the update in the Play Store you can download it from APK Mirror.
http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/youtube/youtube-10-02-3-apk/
Yes, I can confirm this. Installed latest YouTube update from the Play Store (10.03), now demo videos play fine.

Music and video problems with LG G Stylo (Boost)

I've been having a problem since I got my LG G Stylo from Boost. When watching videos and listening to music using any app capable of doing so, the video or music will pause itself randomly and after a bit it will start playing again or it will play after I manually un-pause it. I'm not sure what's causing it. I know some newer and more expensive phones have features that will pause video if the phone detects that you aren't looking at it but these features usually apply to video, not music and even at that my phone doesn't seem to have that feature as I cannot locate a setting control for it. This happens in any app that can play video including videos played in Chrome and it happens in any app that is capable of music playback, which the only two I have are the native music app and Google Play Music. I've read on the internet that it could be caused by another app on my phone but I don't have any apps capable of doing this. I've also read that this can happen when switching networks but my phone is on WiFi most of the time and only switches to 4G when leaving the house which isn't that often. I don't see any reason why this would be happening. I've never had this problem with any other phone and I don't really have any apps on this phone that I didn't have on my last phone. Note that this is my first phone running Lollipop (5.1.1) and I'm starting to think that Android itself is the culprit but I'm not sure. I recently rooted my phone but the problem existed before that and I had the phone for over a month before I attempted root. This is really annoying and I'd like to be able to fix it so anything helps, thanks.
yeah
Resolved the issue. It was Telegram 3.5.1 that caused the problem. I'm on 3.6.1 Now and the issue has gone.
