[Q] Best way to change global font size on stock? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just had a good old internet search but couldn't find a definitive answer so I thought I'd ask the lovely people at xda. Hopefully someone will give me an answer before everyone gets pissy and this thread gets locked.
Anyway, slightly deceptive title as I'm using a ROM based on stock, so, not entirely stock (Chameleon 1.2). Just made a switch away from Cyanogenmod due to the fairly awful battery life I was getting, hopeful this fixes that somewhat. However, I'm already really missing being able to make the font smaller, to a point where I can't use this at all.
Is there a good AIO solution to this? Or am I gonna have to suck it up?

Hadn't though of this for some reason. Works quite well but I'm pretty happy with a dpi of 240 so if anyone else knows of a way I'd love to hear it

Dude, come on. That's the first thing I looked for. There isn't one on this rom. Hence the thread.

have u tried 'Rom Toolbox' app , it may not increase ur exsisting font size, but u can change ur font to a diff one which is bigger in size, and also u can have a preview of 'Fonts' befor applying them in Rom Toolbox

Cheers, I'll have a peek to see if I can find a smaller sized Roboto font and apply that :good:

I use font manager. It works at least to my liking.

Good stuff. The persistent notification is rather annoying though, but the font size seems to persist after killing the app, so I'll live.

Extract auto-brightness from Desire ROM?

I was wondering if ianyone has any idea which files we might need to extract from a Desire ROM to replace the auto-brightness code in Nexus ROMs?
I've noticed that it seems to work much better on the Modaco Desire ROM, with a higher base level of brightness and more consistent reaction to the ambient light level.
Wow, thats awesome.
Anybody an idea, where to find?
The script on Nexus is...****ty.
It has automatic brightness, but it's useless on this phone for now.
Thats right i don't even use it as it doesn't work as it should
It will be grate if some one could work it out.
Plus one on that. We need to combine all the best things from both devices to create one super rom...we shall then call it "Super ROM".
I was just discussing this with my brother, a steady 50% level of brightness looks better then the auto feature on the phone.
He just got his and I told him to shut it off its looks horrible, the green look so fake unless the brightness is on 55% steady and up
I do agree with this: the Desire ROM is pretty damn consistent with the auto brightness.

I didnt even bother checking for the auto-brightness on this ROM. I cant believe it works. Thanks OP
+1 on this! I figured I wasn't the only one.
would be cool if it's possible, but i am not sure if it will work?
+$10 LOL
I know how to extract it. I'll have a look at try it out on my N1.
Just use the desire rom. Why do some people not like it? I love it.

Thirded (is that a word?)
I tried the Desire ROM some days ago, and the screen seemed brighter than the default Nexus ROM (both at max brightness). Anyone noticed that ?

I'm 99.9% sure it can't be done. Even on other HTC models it's already very hard to port over, much less a different brand of phone.

In the immortal words of dumd and dumber
" so your saying theres a chance"
what about just porting the touchwiz and the parts it needs at first then the rest of the os
I think due to the Galaxy S being an hdpi device it would be a near impossible job of porting it to our mdpi Hero. I think the nearest you'll get is a theme. I currently have a near complete framework port of all the images, scaled and re-9.png'd it looks cool but it's still not the ROM is it.
I wish I could do this for all Hero users too. I saw my coworker has bought a samsung galaxy. This device is really fantastic. Also its customized andriod system is very impressive. For instance the overview of desktops. Not like HTC, all desktops are reduced to a almost unreadable size but are aligned in one line. The menu font can be changed. The contact list looks more like iphone style. For me, the buttons in HTC sence look too bigger. This will also minus some points.
I bought my HTC hero last october. But the device has been slighly dropped to ground twice but looks optically very terrible now. And the microphone in headset does not work properly. Generally speaking the HTC qulity is not quite confident to me. Plus the attractive samsung software, I am now heavily considering to switch to samsung. (Smartphone is a great thing. I cannot help to wasting more money on it)

Well the themed framework should run on any 2.2 Froyo ROM. But to achieve the look you need to be able to change the Clock, Date, Notification text colour etc... like in CM6 or Fusion.

Maybe best to try on non-Sense/Vanilla ROM.

I have tried it and it does run, but there are some alignment and graphical issues. This would be due to the resolution it was meant for, Nexus and the like. This guy over here - http://forum.samdroid.net/f42/touchwiz3-launcher-spica-mdpi-screen-1615/ seems to have scaled a version down to fit mdpi devices. Not sure if it works but gonna give it a go. If so, the next cool thing would be to see if we can get some of the widgets to work with it.. ? :S

Specific Fonts for Pentile Screen

Here's what I've noticed and actually checked into the last couple of days. Some fonts look amazing or shall I say look normal. Some font's however don't look as normal and actually show the jagged edges that some complain of. A specific font choice with a smaller font size will yield a kinda jagged appearance and obviously some will see it and some won't depending on the apps they use.
It may be worth it to experiment and determine which fonts we would eventually like to incorporate into roms and mods.
For example, if you enable the 4x1 beautiful weather in Beautiful Widgets you'll see the temp fonts look rather jagged. If you happen to use Audio Manager you will notice the font is even smaller than the BW fonts but look much better. Mobile Signal Widget has the worst example of what's on my device. The signal strength font looks horrible.
The screen in amazing, the colors are superb and for the most part it's super sharp. We should help it along as much as we can.
Someone on another forum pointed out the red text in the Youtube app, that looks bad.
For the most part, for what I use on a daily basis, I have no complaints.
Ya, 98% is perfect, its only those certain situations, that's why I think they could be easily avoided.

I'm using the Robo-ICS font for a while now and also applied it to the Razr right after rooting it. I'm pretty much satisfied with it. It will however not solve the issue with red graphics/letters, because especially with red, the typical pentile effects are more visible than in any other situation.

It may not be for everyone but the Droid font looks really sharp as well. Especially the smaller text.

I just installed it. It did reboot on me 1 time. Now it seems OK. Thanks for the heads up on this. Very nice and clean look.
Just installed the roboto font and it does look slightly better. I'm just glad to have at least a little bit of ability to customize. I really miss my X for that reason. But, on the up side, my wife loves it! I Gabe it to her

font size

I'm rooted and desperately looking for a way to increase font size, especially for emails. is there a method and a means someone could recommend? The market font size changer apps are inadequate from what I've seen and tried. TIA.
This may be a little bit roundabout, but if you have ROM Toolbox you can install many different fonts. Some of them are quite a bit larger.

Screen resolution?

I'm not all that impressed by the stock resolution, need smaller icons and more room! ANyone else?
I've noticed a few screen issues. I think once more apps are converted to being able to make use of this resolution, things will get better over time.

if you root you can change ro.sf.lcd_density in /system/build.prop to a lower number like 480 looks very nice. However the LG custom apps will not work.
You could change the LCD density, if you're root. That's what I did with my S4 to make things look smaller.
changed my DPI to 530 no issues and everything fits better. wanted to try going to 1080p to see if its a real diffrence, when why i tried everything looked too big and not as smooth

edit build prop. or use a dpi changer.. you need to root tho
Well
Be careful on the DPI settings. Gotta be root, and I used a DPI changer. It worked fine. Until I couldn't get my actual phone app or contacts to work. I got around this by getting an app, but I was still having issues. I thought it was because I went thru the system and deleted a bunch of apps, accidentally deleting something important. So I did a reset. And doing a reset doesn't fix the DPI settings back. After being an idiot for a few minutes, I learned it was because of the DPI settings. Changed them back and it fixed the issue. So I've just left it alone and went with Nova. I contribute some of that ignorance to alcohol.

Did it not make your lock screen wallpapers look all screwy though? It zooms in on the wallpaper and makes a dark shadow on the top part for me. I couldn't find a way around it when lowering the dpi.
Interesting... as I'm reading these, I'm thinking... some of the lettering is somewhat blurry, or has a weird look to it... is that just the IPS or the fact that no one has adapted to 2k reso?
530 is great for me. No issues so far
