[Q] Trying to avoid bricking ma phone - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I decided to root my phone. Then after following instructions to upgrade to ICS from a website I realized that I downloaded the wrong version (I have the international version, I think. It is was like "I9100X...something" sorry guise) once I noticed that after using Odin it got stuck at "data.img" I was rooting at school, and unfortunately, I had to leave and disconnect the phone from my laptop and was forced to take out the battery. Did I brick my SGS2?:crying: And if no (hopefully), is there an easier way to install an OS? Thank youu

[Q] Galaxy S2 I9100 would not start

Hi all,
My brand new Galaxy S2 I9100 arrive 2 hrs ago and I turned it on, and then plugged it in to charge. I just tried to turn it on and now it could not come on. A black screen with slow flashing battery icon with a circle in the battery is showing. What's going on?
You tried holding the power button down for a few seconds? Or try turning it on without the charger connected.
I don't remember what I did, but it but a combination of things finally got it started. But my device is crashing and locking up at random. I don't think this is normal?
My baseband version is I9100XXKE7
Kernel version is 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKF3-CL27655, [email protected] #2
Build number is GINGERBREAD.XWKF3
Is this right? It's fresh from the box.

Hmk, 1st you know phone dont come all charged ?
2nd, you will let your phone charge for the night.
3rd you will disconnect your phone and start it.
your problem should be answered.
Reason possible : The phone dont have enough charge and shutdown by it self. that might be interpreted as a crash.
P.S. You should update your phone to XXKI3
P.P.S. please do not update your phone before your phone is fully charged.
Well, this is starting to becoming rather disconcerting. I got home and the screen was on, completely crashed and unresponsive. What gives?? Do I have a lemon?
PS: I know it doesn't come charged, but it was at least 50% charged. That still doesn't explain the random crashing!
Take it back to the store for an exchange. Sounds like it's broken.
Unfortunately I bought an International version and apparently Samsung does not provide warranty to devices in the US that is the International version. I bought it from Dailysteals.com when they had a good deal. Not sure if I can do an exchange... .

Sounds like a lemon but could you at least get it into download mode? (turn off phone, then press home button+volume down+power, hold all at the same time and keep holding it). If you can you can flash one of intratech's firmware and get it up and running at least. Does the battery charge correctly?
Yes, it does charge correctly. Before I flash a custom party firmware (is Intratech custom), I would like to reflash again to the stock firmware. Can you point me to the thread on how to do this? Thanks!

Thanks, downloaded GT-I9100_XEU_I9100XWKF3_I9100XXKE7_I9100XEUKD1.exe
Hope that's the right one. I'm in the USA.
After putting my phone into upload mode, I plugged it into my Win7 x64. Got this usb sound that indicates it's not connected. I thought I installed the right drivers already. Odin is not recognizing my device. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Did you install KIES for the drivers ? If not download it from here :
http://org.downloadcenter.samsung.c.../20110512115717796/Kies_2.0.3.11082_152_4.exe
If you did try uninstalling and re installing again. It was recently updated so i would recommend downloading the latest version for the latest drivers.
Or if installing kies wont help. You can go into your system options and force windows to install the drivers (some usb drivers I think) that were previously not installed, if there was a problem while installing them. That helped me out one time. If you don't know how give me a shout.

After reinstalling the drivers another thing to consider is to close Kies when running Odin as they conflict.
Thanks guys. I'll give it a try this evening when I get back. I've been looking forward to this phone for weeks now it's just so disappointing that I'm having so much problems with it. It's so odd. It just randomly locking up. I've had to hold the power button to force it to reboot multiple times!
Hi guys,
I've contacted Dailysteals and see if the can RMA the device. I hate to send stuff back because of the hassle. This is what I have on my phone

Kernel version is 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKF3-CL27655, [email protected] #2

Which Intratech firmware is the right one to download? I want to flash the exact same one in case I will have to return it. Or do you suggest me to just return it and not attempt to flash it? Thanks!

[Q] I think I bricked my samsung galaxy s2 =-(

I really need some help here if anyone could take some tile to do so...
I just got the samsung galaxy s2 and I tried to flash the firmware on the phone and I believe I flashed the wrong one and now I have no services on my phone at all. I flashed a rom and have no connect 3g/4g/wifi. I am not able to connect the phone to odhin to reflash the firmware either. I can get into download (Odhin mode) and I can also get into recovery. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
i dont get it, you say you cant connect your phone to odin, but you can get into downlaod mode.
put your phone in download mode, then connect your phone to PC and then reflash the correct firmware for your phone with ODIN

It doesn't connect at all when I am in download (odin mode) like it won't show me with the yellow connection in odin tells me that I have a custom binary and that I have downloaded 1 binary. The only time I can connect with odin is when the phone is in the booted up but I can not do anything with it at all no connection. Also Clockwork is all messed up as well whenever I click on a task it goes blank and I just hit the power button again and it goes back to the main screen =-(
I have been reading up online and I guess what I need is a US version of sprints firmware but now I need to figure out how to install it once I get my hands on it

Please help! Bricked GT - I9108

So I was helping my friend with her China Galaxy S2 GT - I9108 and I foolishly tried to flash "GT-I9100_ClockworkMod-Recovery_5.0.2.3.tar" onto her phone through odin...
Now it's stuck at the yellow triangle everytime when I boot up. I've bricked her 500$ phone...
Please tell me anyone, how do I make it work again?
There are chinese methods apparently but I am not chinese.... I just wish someone could provide reasonably well written instructions and DL links so I can fix her phone! Please!
Since it is apparently a Chinese only model phone, I think you'd be hard pressed to find any English websites that can help you... Maybe some Chinese sites, with Google Translate? Not perfect, but it's something.
Try to find stock firmware and flash it via odin. Google translate can help you for chinese sites.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA
Also, if this isn't obvious now... Don't flash any more i9100 kernels or firmwares. Only flash i9108 kernels or firmwares.
Stock?
I can't seem to find it anywhere! My brain aches from looking for the stock >< Please help? ): What would I need to do IF I found it?
Since I flashed a GT - I9100 tar file can someone link me to a tar file that is compatible with the GT - I9108?

Possibly, but don't use any of the firmwares linked within, as they are all for i9100 model phones.
Go to samfirmware.com to find stock i9108 firmwares. Download one from there, (you'll have to register but it's free) and flash using that guide. Again, don't use any files linked from the guide as they are not meant for your phone. But the steps should be the same.
EDIT: actually, don't use that guide. Just download an i9108 firmware from samfirmware.com, flash it in Odin in the PDA field, then do a factory reset. Then you should be good.
Yes Sorry, I fixed it haha
GT - i9100 haha

Don't worry about product code. You know you have an I9108.
The site is a tad confusing. You have to click the Firmwares tab, then click Type: Smartphone, then OS: Android, then Models: GT-I9108, then Region: Asia. That will get you a list of stock firmwares for the i9108.
Edit to add: Also, ignore the box at the bottom that says "LATEST FIRMWARES". If you notice, the models are all for a different model of phone; not the GT-I9108. The PDA for the I9108 should always start with "I9108".
http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&t=1&o=1&m=GT-I9108&r=-1#modelsa
I'm there! However theres none under the list O_O is it just my browser not loading the list? It wont show haha
Edit: NVM I forgot to click "asia"
edit 2: You reached your hourly traffic limit.
You can wait download for 13 minutes or upgrade to premium
Oh my goodness hotfile... ugh.
FYI, this may or may not be of interest to you.
I found this page using google that suggests that the i9108 uses the same SoC/chipset that the i9100G uses. Which is why you had issues when you used an i9100 kernel to try to root.
EDIT: well, you never explicitly said you were rooting, but you were flashing a kernel that had CWM Recovery in it, so I assumed you were rooting.

And when you're trying download mode, you're doing it with the phone powered off, right? Then holding Vol Down + home, then pressing power till the screen lights?

Before ): Yup I am...
Strangely the phone only turns on when I plug it into the USB cable
Apparently the power button is working fine when USB connected.... and it keeps restarting when USB is connected too!
Edit: Restarting seems to be just when plugged into computer... so i guess its driver stuff.
On wall charger its just stuck on the boot screen

Well, during one of the boot cycles while the plug is in, try holding vol down and home. Maybe you'll get lucky. OR take out batt, hold vol down and home, (keep holding) then put battery back, and THEN press power till screen lights.
If that doesn't work, you may need to try obtaining a USB jig. You can order them on eBay or construct your own. There are instructions all over google on how to do it, but they cost like $2-3, so I just bought one.
So since it still powers on and home button works the USB jig should work right?
And flashing to stock firmware using PDA option on Odin should in theory work right?
Can you reccomend a link for a good jig? Don't wanna buy a bad one.

i777 NO ODIN/ NO BOOT/ NOT RECOGNIZED/ NO DOWNLOAD-MODE/ NO RECOVERY-MODE/ NO CWM

One more from noobville!
I was using ShishirRom (ICS) since a week. Today I was trying to flash CM9-Stable-Version in the morning. And 2 major problems occurred.
1. While I was transferring the CM-9-Stable-Version file to my phone, I was checking out the ROM Manager (I know you hate me already!!) and I pressed the Backup Current ROM Button instead of the back button on my phone. (**** Im stupid ) But wait there is more!
2. While I was finally able to get into Download Mode after 30 minutes of fiddling and was trying to flash via Odin to return to Stock and start all over again, my dear a$$hole friend pulled the plug while the Odin was in progress. (Yes, I am having one of those worst days)
Current situation: Phone does not boot-up - means NO ODIN RECOGNITION / NOT RECOGNIZED BY LAPTOP / NO DOWNLOAD-MODE / NO RECOVERY-MODE / NO CWM.
I have been googling about ADB and how to use it, but honestly I have not found on a How-to. I have read that ADB can reboot the phone into Download Mode or Recovery Mode, but I don't know how to use it. I don't know how to use ADB does not mean I didn't google it. I just couldn't find a guide to use it in my situation. If you can, please send me a link

Ok so this might look dumb of me, but I am desperate here. I know its a weekend, and everybody is drunk. And probably I am the only lonely trying to figure out what the hell is ADB!
I look up to this site and the developers here. And I shouldn't, but I have, started expecting from all of you knowledgeable individuals. I would be hurt to be let down. Please help!
Thank you everyone in advance.

I just got the USB-JIG. I followed the instructions you mentioned, but it does not work. The USB-JIG does not help either.
Im actually in the process of moving interstate. Once its done, I will contact the local AT&T shop to find out more on warranty replacement, since I am still under warranty.
Thank you anyway; even if it didn't start my phone, I still learnt a lesson: NEVER DO ANDROID STUFF IN OFFICE TIME, OR YOUR STUPID FRIEND WILL UNPLUG YOUR PHONE THINKING ITS JUST CHARGING.

[Solved]Help Required!! Suspecting Brick :(

Hello,
I am new to the S2 forum. I have purchased the phone on Dec 04. It came with firmware version 4.0.4.
The PDA was I9100XWLPW and CSC was I9100ODDLPC.
After a week, I flashed the leaked JB firmware XXLSJ and used PhilZ cwm6 kernel to obtain root.
I was not having any problems until today.
I was using the phone normally, it had about 60% battery. Suddenly it was not waking up ( The phone was not used for about 15min ). I tried removing the battery, all button combinations but was not booting normally or into recovery. I could get into the download mode by plugging the phone to the PC. Odin failed to flash the official FW and the JB leak. I followed the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1457458 and found out it was a corrupted NAND r/w function.
I tried doing all the steps given in the thread. Now my phone does'nt go into the download mode and does'nt show charging when plugged to a power source.
Can I recover my phone?
Please someone help me or guide me to a previous post that solves this problem!!
Edit: Samsung service has replaced the mother board!!
Doing the pit partition has resulted in my phone getting bricked!!
So people new to the forum, never do it
Hi,
You said you couldn't access download mode, but can you access CWM recovery?
If you can then, you should wipe data/factory set, wipe cache and wipe Dalvik-cahe. after that you should re-flash your ROM.
If that doesn't work, maybe you should restore your CWM/Nandroid backup of your ROM before you flashed the JB leak XXLSJ, which in this case seems to be Stock ROM. (providing that you have backed it up in the first place)

HI,
today I wake up with the same problem.(Bug from the junary 1st???). I'm on Leak 4.1.2 too
Mi Galaxy sII don't charge the batery (loop from charge batery symbol) All the combination button don't wake up the phone.
The only thing seem working is the download mode. Don't try to connect to ODIN for the moment.
Any idea?

We already have plenty of topics about this why do you feel the need to create another? Your symptoms are no different to others and the answers are no different.
If you cant access download or recovery and cant power on then try a USB jig. If that doesnt work then you will need to take/send it for repair which will either be JTAG or complete mobo replacement.
Just because you create your own topic it doesnt mean answer is going to be any different.

I am sorry!! I am new to this forum and the phone being a recent purchase, i was very much desperate!!

Thanks for your reply. I will be taking the phone to Samsung Service tomorrow.

3 100k resistors + 1k resistor in series connected between 4 and 5 pins of a male usb end when plugged will get you into download mode in case of soft bricks .

In some of the posts, I've read that a JIG may not work on ICS based roms!!
Is this true?? Should I try a JIG first before I take the phone to Samsung Service??
I was on XXLSJ before the phone went dead!!

I had the same problem.. I could get into the download mode by:
1. Phone completely OFF state
2. Connect the USB cable to the phone and PC ( The battery charging indication has to come, atleast once )
3. Fire up ODIN
4. Get the phone into download mode ( Vol-down+home+Power ) while the phone is connected
5. The phone is now recognized by ODIN.
I could flash a kernel (tried siyah and Philz) but the phone was not booting.
While trying to flash Stock and XXLSJ, ODIN was getting failed at factoryfs.fs
After a few trys, the phone just went dead!!
Hope you can flash a firmware successfully :good:

You are misinterpreting what you read. What you're referring to is resetting the binary counter, and no it doesn't work on ICS bootloader however it still works for putting device into download mode (unless its bricked).

"Soft-brick" has absolutely no meaning, Your device is either "bricked" or it isnt. Its a made up term by n00bs when they cant get system to boot normally. Your devcie is only bricked when it wont power on or go into useable recovery+download modes. If you can simply use a jig or go directly into flashing a rom then your device is not bricked.
The "bricked" term is used far too loosely nowadays.

Your phone died? you kiding ?
I'm using the leak version of Sammobile since 3 weeks... Why do you think the phone make a bad reaction now? why now?
Ok, you try to flash OFW and don't result. and then you flash again the XXLSJ ? and the phone colaspe?
What kind of roms do i flash? OFM or CFW ? ICS or JB ?
Well if a can connect with ODIN of course
A quick question!!
Is it possible that the phone can be revived (put into download mode) using a JIG if it is not starting at all for any key combinations and it is not showing charging animation when plugged into a computer or a power source??

Yes its possible which is the reason we already mentioned to try it
It all depends on the actual base issue though as to whether it will work. Its worth a try either way though, They only cost £1-2 or you can make them yourself if you have the spare parts. (Don't ask how, Use search).
I have tried the JIG, but no luck!!
I have given the phone to Samsung Service.
Hope they fix it!!
Will they use JTAG or it has to be done somewhere else in case Samsung people refuse to do it??
They wouldn't refuse just act dumb tell something like you were updating firmware via kies and all of a sudden power went down and device bribed
