Photon & Lapdock Issue - Motorola Photon 4G

Really hope someone can help me with this problem I'm having. When I connect my Photon to a lapdock I don't get the option to use Webtop. The only options I get are Music, Gallery, and Mirror Screen. If I don't pick an option then all I see on the lapdock's screen is the red bouncing Motorola logo. When I choose either of those 3 options it displays on the lapdocks screen but I have no control of it via the touchpad or the keyboard. I have tried two different lapdocks, an Atrix that I modded myself and just now a Bionic, and both behave the same way.
As far as I know my phone isn't rooted or modded in any way. Only reason I'm not sure is because I bought my phone used close to a month ago. I have done a factory reset and wipe cache several times since I've owned it hoping that might help but so far it hasn't. Currently I am running Android 2.3.5, System Version 45.4.13.MB855.Sprint.en.US, and Webtop WT-1.2.0-180. Thanks in advance!

The HDMI or USB pins aren't connected all the way in. Reboot and try again. That's the most common reason it shows, unless you broke web top in some way

I've rebooted countless times to no avail. When I connect the phone to the lapdock the phone charges so I assume that should mean the USB connection is fine and I get the Motorola logo on the lapdock screen so that should mean the HDMI connection is okay I guess. Ater a few seconds though the Motorola logo then starts to bounce around and that's all it does. I can choose Music, Gallery, and Mirror Screen on my phone and those show up just fine on the lapdock's screen. I have yet to use Webtop so I don't have anything to compare this to.
I have factory reset my phone a couple times hoping that would fix this but it hasn't. I'm assuming doing a factory reset would also reset Webtop and remove/modify any changes that have been made right?

I have mixed results with Webtop. Sometimes it works upon connecting the phone and sometimes it doesn't. I called Motorola support. They told me to take out the battery reinstall and then connect. This seems to work but not all the time.

Thanks for the suggestion but that didn't seem to do it. I remember trying that when I originally noticed the problem. Did that a few times before considering I should factory reset the phone. I just did it again but this time I did it like 5 times in a row and kept getting the same results everytime. The HDMI connection window pops up on the phone and the only options I have to choose from are Gallery, Music, and Mirror phone on display. :crying:

Just got done taking the dock area of the lapdock apart so the loose cables were out of the cradle part. Did that to test to make sure the usb and hdmi connectors were making a solid connection with the phone in case the dock was getting in the way. Same result. The hdmi connection window pops up with only 3 non-webtop options available like earlier.

Well at least you ruled out the HDMI cable as not faulty. The issue must be the USB cable. You stated that you had no control of the touchpad and keyboard. Does the Photon show that its charging?

Yeah the phone charges just fine when docked. Wish I could get this figured out. Webtop seems like a cool feature that I would use quite a lot if I could only get the phone and lapdock to play nice together.

It might be weptop itself. I can't think of any reason why it wont work other than that it just denies connecting to the lapdocks. You might need to try unlocking and flashing a different webtop. Seeing as you are on 2.3.5 it might be possible if you didn't take ota to get to 2.3.5. If you did, you may just need a newer lapdock like the lapdock 100. You pretty much ruled out hardware so software is the issue

Try scouring Loki's thread about ubuntop. He, or someone else(?), may have mentioned something about newer webtop refusing connection. It maybe something as simple as replacing an apk if you decide to root

When I bought it it already had 2.3.5 so I'm going to guess the update was the OTA. As much as I would like to test out the lapdock 100 I don't think I'm going to do it. No place around me has one out on display for me to use and I'm definitely not going to buy it blindly since that would make the 3rd lapdock I've bought so far lol
Dang it. Guess I'll just admit I've been beaten by this and move on. Thanks for the help! I really do appreciate it.

I'm having the same issues. atrix lapdock, 2.3.5 ota update. i get unsupported device on my phone and those three options.
im trying to find a webtop update if possible.. phones rooted but not unlocked because of the freaking bs ota update that i THOUGHT was going to be ics when it showed up 2 days before qtr4

I feel your pain, man. If you find anything out please share it. I would love to be able to use webtop on the lapdock I've had for about a month now.
Do you happen to have a mediadock? I'm curious if our phones would still show webtop if used with the mediadock. I don't have a 1 and I'm really not interested in buying one if that also won't work with my phone.

If by "mediadock" you mean the HD dock, yes... well, the Electrify does Webtop on the HD dock. My wife's does (stock, unrooted). Mine only mirrors, but I'm running CM10 and that not doing webtop is a known issue. Webtop sucks anyway (IMO), I'd rather have CM10. But to answer your question, yes webtop works on the HD dock. You just need to bring your own keyboard, mouse, and screen.

I know webtop works with the hd dock but I was asking ron if he had one to see if it would work with his phone since our phones are having the same issue.
I know a lot of people don't have positive feelings about webtop but that isn't my concern. I would like to get it working so I can at least try it. It is a feature this phone is supposed to have yet I haven't even see it on the lapdock I bought just for it.

Getting really sick of my atrix switching back to my N1 until something better comes.

ok i dont even know where to start... I dont usuallypost that many threads *****ing and complaining about my phone.. but enough is enough...
I haven't rooted...(well I did a while ago BUT)... I took part in that beta testing update crap so it unrooted me.. but these problems I have been having are since the LAST "update" which was well over two months ago now (I THINK)...
1st problem I am having is randomly I cannot input text into ANY thing on the phone... I am using smart keyboard pro.. but even when i change input methods it still does not register anything i am typing... in fact when i switch the phone to landscape mode the text box goes dark grey...
2nd also when this happens... nothing will happen when i attempt to make a phone call... i click the name .. nothing happens.. i go into dialer... i cant input the number i try other methods of dialing out nothing happens....
those are the two biggest problems I have as I need to communicate with my clients all day long i cannot have this type of inconsistency.
ohh and also the finger print scanner just plain doesn't work when i go through the process of setting it up.. it wont even register the "test" swipes... its like its broken all together.... any one else having ANY of these problems?? please help me
I've never had any of those problems ever and I've had my atrix since launch date. Maybe you have a deffective device call and see if your provider will do anything about.

(lazy.. it is what it is) but that could very well fix my problem i guess right... ugghh
ok
good luck sell me ur atrix I need a second one for testing purposes
If you feel adventurous enough, try disassembling the device and reseating the LCD/digitizer cable.
I had an issue with a Samsung galaxy s vibrant about a month ago that would register touch inputs when it was just sitting on the table. I did what I suggested above and the problem was solved.

If you took some time to read, your problem would already be solved.
1. Your digitalizer may not be working well. Guarantee will cover this.
2. SBF from scratch to discard a software issue.
None of the issues you are experiencing is related to the phone being a dual-core mobile or not.
I've been able to solve some problems by reading and taking the advice from the forums.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1112325
looks like that one relates to win7 64 bit problems.
I'm pretty strongly considering this phone, but this seems like a real issue.
FWIW:
My rooted X2 is having no trouble tethering with Wireless Tether 2.0.7.
- (Not on the Market anymore, but just Google "Wireless Tether")
I have used it without issue to get Internet access on Win7 64, Win7 32, OG Droid, iPad, Ubuntu 10.10 and probably a few others.
I've also had no trouble using EZ-Tether (paid) with Win7 64 and Ubuntu 10.10.
cool, glad to hear that
No Luck
I'm having no luck with the X2. First one was acting up so I took it back and they said they'd replace it. When they took the battery cover off it showed that the phone had water damage. I only had it 10 days and it never left my pocket or my hand. So they replaced it anyway. Got home with the second one and had just got everything reinstalled... all 110 apps and then someone called me... they couldn't hear me. Bad Microphone! so I took it back the next day and the service rep said she'd replace it. She got a new one out of the box and went to activate it and it wouldn't even communicate with Verizon's network! So she had to call a Tech. You know it's bad when a tech has to call a tech lol. The tech told her that it was probably a dud and to get a new one. So needless to say I'm on my fourth X2 in two days and this one is still acting up. I receive multiple repeat txts, the phone freezes, it won't download apps unless I stay in the market while it's downloading and even that sometimes doesn't work, music skips, lags, just all around isn't even close to the Droid incredible that I just upgraded from. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated cuz I'm tired of hearing from all my Iphone owning friends how Droid sucks!

Sounds like you are having no luck with your X2 at all. First off, your post has very little to do with the thread, needs moved to it's own thread with a proper title (mod help please). Second, have you rooted and removed the bloat from the phone? When I first got mine, it was super laggy and had some serious issues. I rooted, killed all the useless junk (frozen, not removed), and have yet to have a problem. As a matter of fact, this phone is damn fast when the fat is cleaned up.
So, go read the first post in this thread: Getting Started with the X2 ... I'm sure you will see major differences once done. Also, try not to threadjack... it's not cool.
I too tried to tether my xoom to the x2 without success. The xoom does not like to connect to an adhoc net, and that is what wireless tether sets up. With my OG Droid, I was able to use BT tethering with the xoom, but that doesn't want to work with the x2.
I think I saw there was some hack for the xoom that allowed it to connect adhoc, so that might be my next trial.
Sent from my DROID X2 using Tapatalk
I ran wifi tether on my rooted Dinc and my XOOM connected perfectly. I've tried almost all of the versions and nothing has worked. So I'm lost.

Short answer, charging/HDMI spots are in different positions so it wouldnt fit.
yea i noticed the hdmi and micro ports switched.....which really pissed me off that moto would do that, but im suspecting they will put out a lapdock for the photon specifically.

IMO, Motorola is stepping on their own foot. Had they not switched port positions, the Atrix lap dock could have been a huge selling item for the Photon or any other Moto phone which supports it. Why keep investing MORE money for additional docks when this one alone could have raked in a lot of cash.
I'm going to test something that might just work.
We might be able to MacGyver the Atrix LapDock for use with our Photons. Using Micro USB and HDMI Extender cables.
It's not elegant, by any stretch...but would be an easy workaround.
I wouldn't be adverse to having my Photon attached to the LapDock via cables, instead of docked.
If anyone beats me to testing this out, please report your findings.
Apparently at&t has exclusive rights to the laptop dock (using with the atrix) for a period of time. Not sure how long.

Nope...haven't found THAT yet. Maybe they don't make the HDMI one?
Right now it looks like a tangled mess of adapters to make this work.
There is this adapter micro f to hdmi male:
http://www.usbsea.com/products/HDMI_Male_to_Micro_HDMI_Female_Adapter_R-AD-HMHF4.html
Then you need an hdmi f to f like this:
http://www.usbsea.com/products/HDMI_Female_to_HDMI_Female_Adapter_R-AD-HFHF.html
Then you can use your micro to regular hdmi cable.
I'm still looking for a micro hdmi f to micro hdmi m which would be perfect.

It's really frustrating that Sprint and Motorola are so far behind on the laptop dock for this phone. I really want this dock so that I can use it for work when I am on call, and not have to lug around a laptop and wait for it to boot up, connect to my hotspot etc. C'mon Sprint, C'mon Motorola! All they need to do is build two parts, a longer cable for the HDMI/USB ports, and a new baseplate for the phone to sit on, this should be nothing to kick those out, since obviously aside from the ports being swapped, it still works on this phone.

I am aware this has perhaps been asked previously, but I believe my situation is different.
I have two phones, both are the atrix, the one I use as my mp3 player will be the one I am inquiring about.
I am looking for a rom to use with the lapdock, not hdmi mirroring I know that is a good feature but not what I am looking for. I believe something similar to stock is what I am looking for but not quite sure. Any assistance will be appreciated.
Thank you

I have flashed NottachTrix4G 131 with no issues and like it alot....

that they have created a linux driver for ARM devices. Based on what I have been able to determine, this means that I should be able to load the driver on android, but this is where I start getting in way over my head.
Does anyone know what I should be trying to get this to work? I also read that ICS has some form of touch input built in... should I be trying this on that? Right now I am running CM7. It seems to me like with a little work we could have external touchscreens for our Atrix!
Oh I forgot to mention, when I plug the touchscreen in, DMSG does register a USB HID input device as "eGalax Inc. USB TouchController"
CM7 also registers the handlers for the touchscreen as mouse1 and event10 when I run "cat /proc/bus/input/devices"
It seems like this is so close right out of the box! I'm trying my best to load the drivers now from terminal... we'll see how that goes.
Hope you get it sorted.

Wow, I really wish that I could help. I'm really just dropping in to show interest and wish you good luck.
That would be a really sweet way to almost have a padphone. Ever since I unboxed my lapdock I've said that it should have been a tabdock with a touchscreen instead.
I'll go back to lurking now...

Thanks, My idea here is to dump the phone to a mounted 7" screen in my car dash. I want to basically have a touch screen head unit with all the power android offers, and the unlimited data that AT&T is still reluctantly supplying.
As far as the project goes... I just tried on Joker's CM9 built with the exact same results... I was hoping maybe the rumors I had heard about ICS support were true, but not out of the box i suppose. As far as the drivers, I can not get the calibration / driver utility to run so far... and that's as far as I'm going to be able to go tonight.
Why not HDMI?
Edit, HDMI can't support touch screen, my bad

lol nice timing. I was just logging in.
HDMI works great as is. However, I was looking to be able to provide input back to the phone. Otherwise, the phone still has to be front and center for controlling, which in my opinion kind of defeats the purpose of putting the screen there in the first place.
Basically you want to do like, vnc and pocket cloud, where you control your computer via smartphone but you wanna control the phone instead via touchscreen panel, that sounds like a pain in the ass!

Yes that's exactly what I want to do. I tried running a vnc server on the phone, but even over USB it was far too laggy.
Yeah you would need to like over clock but even that is sketchy

Right now I'm trying to install ubuntu on the atrix.... with linux drivers for arm devices that might be a solution i can handle, but I'm not sure it would work with USG host. Don't know until you try though!
True that! Let me know how it goes, sounds like an excellent project

Are you sure that the USB isn't just for passing touchscreen input back to a device? I mean, I know there are such things as USB monitors, but I don't think this is one of them, is what I'm saying -- I'm pretty sure you need to use both HDMI and USB for this to work.
Even if you could load the driver. Which you can. You still need to write some libs and script to get android on the screen. Good luck

Perhaps I need to clarify... The Lilliput 669 has a proprietary HDMI cable that breaks into HDMI and USB. I am not trying to send video and input over USB, just input. The HDMI part works as is. I plan on using both HDMI and USB in the final solution.

Yea me too! I have tried in vain to buy this. $189 AU is a little less than $200, which I would be perfectly ok with for a completely working bluetooth solution. However, I can't buy it. MP3car.com is working with the designer to bring the product to market, but they are still 4-8 weeks out, and there are some concerns that it may not be released at all. The designer's web site lists the product as out of stock.
I have tried to find somewhere else that I could buy it, or at least get schematics to build one, but it has been in vain. By the way, this has been re-branded as "Mimics for Android".
I had been wanting to do the same thing. The other day i just came across something that should be coming out end of the month android quadcore mini development board. so you could say use touch monitor and android OS i see they have bluetooth also so maybe phone could connect bluetooth to the android system in car. there isnt much more info on the board but it looks promising for an incar project its tiny. its called odroid-x http://www.hardkernel.com/renewal_2011/products/prdt_info.php
there was some other $100 range android cube thing i saw recently too that might be good. OUYA is name of it maybe XDA will have a section one day for these devices. could make for some good in-car systems much cheaper than indash receivers and more features.
Good luck to ya, keep us posted. I would kill for a solution like this. I would love to be able to implement this, with a fiber optic audio out to a DSP like the Zapco DSP6 or Audison BitOne.1 or the Helix C/P-DSP that is coming to market.

This all sounds good, and I have seen the OUYA... it looks impressive. However this will remove the phone ability if I go this route. I could just check out the android x86 project for that... I believe they already have this screen working actually. I've been trying to follow how they made that work.
I really want to stick with my atrix as the brain so that I retain the 3g connection without another $50 a month or losing unlimited internet.

just to know... do you read the "Kernel 2.6.24 upward" right?
theres also what samcriip told, even porting the drivers, you need to write the libs and scripts to get android on the screen, idk how much you know about android but... this is kinda hard to be done...
Good luck, you'll need it.
