External 7" touchscreen driver for Atrix CarPC - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone. I have gone as far as I can go by myself, and I am looking for a little help to see if together we can get this working.
I have a Lilliput 669GL-70NP/C/T 7" touch screen that I want to try and get working over USB host. So far, all my attempts have been fruitless, but I think that it is possible. The touchscreen utilizes an eGalax driver to work, and I see from their web site here:
http://home.eeti.com.tw/web20/eGalaxTouchDriver/linuxDriver.htm
that they have created a linux driver for ARM devices. Based on what I have been able to determine, this means that I should be able to load the driver on android, but this is where I start getting in way over my head.
Does anyone know what I should be trying to get this to work? I also read that ICS has some form of touch input built in... should I be trying this on that? Right now I am running CM7. It seems to me like with a little work we could have external touchscreens for our Atrix!

Oh I forgot to mention, when I plug the touchscreen in, DMSG does register a USB HID input device as "eGalax Inc. USB TouchController"

CM7 also registers the handlers for the touchscreen as mouse1 and event10 when I run "cat /proc/bus/input/devices"
It seems like this is so close right out of the box! I'm trying my best to load the drivers now from terminal... we'll see how that goes.

Hope you get it sorted.

Wow, I really wish that I could help. I'm really just dropping in to show interest and wish you good luck.
That would be a really sweet way to almost have a padphone. Ever since I unboxed my lapdock I've said that it should have been a tabdock with a touchscreen instead.
I'll go back to lurking now...

Thanks, My idea here is to dump the phone to a mounted 7" screen in my car dash. I want to basically have a touch screen head unit with all the power android offers, and the unlimited data that AT&T is still reluctantly supplying.
As far as the project goes... I just tried on Joker's CM9 built with the exact same results... I was hoping maybe the rumors I had heard about ICS support were true, but not out of the box i suppose. As far as the drivers, I can not get the calibration / driver utility to run so far... and that's as far as I'm going to be able to go tonight.

Why not HDMI?
Edit, HDMI can't support touch screen, my bad

lol nice timing. I was just logging in.
HDMI works great as is. However, I was looking to be able to provide input back to the phone. Otherwise, the phone still has to be front and center for controlling, which in my opinion kind of defeats the purpose of putting the screen there in the first place.

Basically you want to do like, vnc and pocket cloud, where you control your computer via smartphone but you wanna control the phone instead via touchscreen panel, that sounds like a pain in the ass!

Yes that's exactly what I want to do. I tried running a vnc server on the phone, but even over USB it was far too laggy.

Yeah you would need to like over clock but even that is sketchy

Right now I'm trying to install ubuntu on the atrix.... with linux drivers for arm devices that might be a solution i can handle, but I'm not sure it would work with USG host. Don't know until you try though!

True that! Let me know how it goes, sounds like an excellent project

Are you sure that the USB isn't just for passing touchscreen input back to a device? I mean, I know there are such things as USB monitors, but I don't think this is one of them, is what I'm saying -- I'm pretty sure you need to use both HDMI and USB for this to work.

Even if you could load the driver. Which you can. You still need to write some libs and script to get android on the screen. Good luck

Perhaps I need to clarify... The Lilliput 669 has a proprietary HDMI cable that breaks into HDMI and USB. I am not trying to send video and input over USB, just input. The HDMI part works as is. I plan on using both HDMI and USB in the final solution.

Yea me too! I have tried in vain to buy this. $189 AU is a little less than $200, which I would be perfectly ok with for a completely working bluetooth solution. However, I can't buy it. MP3car.com is working with the designer to bring the product to market, but they are still 4-8 weeks out, and there are some concerns that it may not be released at all. The designer's web site lists the product as out of stock.
I have tried to find somewhere else that I could buy it, or at least get schematics to build one, but it has been in vain. By the way, this has been re-branded as "Mimics for Android".

I had been wanting to do the same thing. The other day i just came across something that should be coming out end of the month android quadcore mini development board. so you could say use touch monitor and android OS i see they have bluetooth also so maybe phone could connect bluetooth to the android system in car. there isnt much more info on the board but it looks promising for an incar project its tiny. its called odroid-x http://www.hardkernel.com/renewal_2011/products/prdt_info.php
there was some other $100 range android cube thing i saw recently too that might be good. OUYA is name of it maybe XDA will have a section one day for these devices. could make for some good in-car systems much cheaper than indash receivers and more features.

Good luck to ya, keep us posted. I would kill for a solution like this. I would love to be able to implement this, with a fiber optic audio out to a DSP like the Zapco DSP6 or Audison BitOne.1 or the Helix C/P-DSP that is coming to market.

This all sounds good, and I have seen the OUYA... it looks impressive. However this will remove the phone ability if I go this route. I could just check out the android x86 project for that... I believe they already have this screen working actually. I've been trying to follow how they made that work.
I really want to stick with my atrix as the brain so that I retain the 3g connection without another $50 a month or losing unlimited internet.

just to know... do you read the "Kernel 2.6.24 upward" right?
theres also what samcriip told, even porting the drivers, you need to write the libs and scripts to get android on the screen, idk how much you know about android but... this is kinda hard to be done...
Good luck, you'll need it.

A few questions before I buy

So I've done some searching and reading here lately, and I have just a few questions before I finally make this leap. I'm ecstatic that the BL is finally unlocked. This is great!
First, I do some traveling and I love being able to plug a device in to a hotel TV and get decent video quality. Is the multimedia dock the only way to allow this? Specifically, I'm looking at streaming Netflix or Hulu. I usually don't travel with DVDs on my storage card, but I suppose I can if that's the only option here.
Second, how does anyone with the LapDock like it? I personally see myself using this quite a bit, as it would make life easier at work with a larger interface and full keyboard. Do you find it too cumbersome to travel with? Ideal when you'll be in one place for longer periods of time?
How's the video chat capability? With some travel, I like to be able to call my son when on the road. Does the front cam give decent quality?
Is there any video chat capability with the lapdock? I don't see a cam on the front of it, so I'm curious if the USB ports are usable with a webcam. This would also be ideal for the quick video conferences for work.
I've been waiting and waiting for something better to come along. However, a refurbed Atrix for $50, and a refurbed lapdock for $175 is pretty tough to pass up. Both for $225...or brand new for $300 after rebate.
Thanks for any help and insight.

AFAIK ther´s no cam in the dock but with the hdmi mirroring you can video chat on a tv, i dont know if you can plug in a webcam but with full ubuntu it should be possible
My advice: BUY IT
i dont think hdmi mirroring or webtop via hdmi is working YET in 2.3.4, but in 1.8.3 you are golden on both. with full ubuntu, there is no reason you couldnt use a webcam with the lapdock that i can think of, its essentially a computer, so as long as linux drivers are available for whichever webcam you choose to use, it should work.
Awesome! Thanks guys. Now to pull the trigger and get this thing ordered.
Just want to give my input on the lapdock. Its incredibly thin. and its a nice size. I picked up a refurbished unit from At&t for about 175.
Charges your phone too. I slapped debian on it, and it runs really nice!

Great to hear! I've been thinking about putting the full distro on there as well. I think this is a great concept and a fantastic start, even if there are some bugs/issues/features to address. I think this basic function and form will be around for a while, or at least I hope so.
On the dock, I'm assuming you've addressed the APN issue to take a grandfathered unlimited plan? That's my biggest concern: keeping unlimited data and being able to use webtop. I've read the dev forum, and it seems no one is having any issues with this, which is great.
I have unlimited. You just need to apply the tethering hack found in the dev forum, and you'll be able to keep your unlimited data!
By the way, if you're scared of receiving a bad refurbished dock, don't be. My dock looks and acts brand new

I've had pretty good luck with the refurbs before. Mine have always been brand new, but I've bought refurbs for others, and they've been flawless. I was a bit worried with the Atrix, but when I talked to my sales guy the other day he was telling me about 80% of the docks he sells are returned within 30 days. That gave me the idea to look at refurbs, and 175 isn't bad!
You'll have to get it online for the discount I believe. Free shipping too.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
Yeah, that's usually how the refurbs work. I was just saying I got the idea from the salesman who said he's seen a lot returned. Now to just make sure they don't change my data plan That's always easier in the store!

browsertexting.com, works amazingly

i used the site which let me see my contacts so i could text people from the touch pad browser using my android phone. it was quick worked quick. i could even respond with out issues. now if someone could turn this into an standalone app that would be amazing, that way we could incorporate a pop up feature. should not be hard if there is already a system in place.

Seeing as this is under the HP Touchpad forum and the HP Touchpad is, in fact, a tablet I think my previous comment holds some merit.

Photon & Lapdock Issue

Really hope someone can help me with this problem I'm having. When I connect my Photon to a lapdock I don't get the option to use Webtop. The only options I get are Music, Gallery, and Mirror Screen. If I don't pick an option then all I see on the lapdock's screen is the red bouncing Motorola logo. When I choose either of those 3 options it displays on the lapdocks screen but I have no control of it via the touchpad or the keyboard. I have tried two different lapdocks, an Atrix that I modded myself and just now a Bionic, and both behave the same way.
As far as I know my phone isn't rooted or modded in any way. Only reason I'm not sure is because I bought my phone used close to a month ago. I have done a factory reset and wipe cache several times since I've owned it hoping that might help but so far it hasn't. Currently I am running Android 2.3.5, System Version 45.4.13.MB855.Sprint.en.US, and Webtop WT-1.2.0-180. Thanks in advance!
The HDMI or USB pins aren't connected all the way in. Reboot and try again. That's the most common reason it shows, unless you broke web top in some way

I've rebooted countless times to no avail. When I connect the phone to the lapdock the phone charges so I assume that should mean the USB connection is fine and I get the Motorola logo on the lapdock screen so that should mean the HDMI connection is okay I guess. Ater a few seconds though the Motorola logo then starts to bounce around and that's all it does. I can choose Music, Gallery, and Mirror Screen on my phone and those show up just fine on the lapdock's screen. I have yet to use Webtop so I don't have anything to compare this to.
I have factory reset my phone a couple times hoping that would fix this but it hasn't. I'm assuming doing a factory reset would also reset Webtop and remove/modify any changes that have been made right?

I have mixed results with Webtop. Sometimes it works upon connecting the phone and sometimes it doesn't. I called Motorola support. They told me to take out the battery reinstall and then connect. This seems to work but not all the time.

Thanks for the suggestion but that didn't seem to do it. I remember trying that when I originally noticed the problem. Did that a few times before considering I should factory reset the phone. I just did it again but this time I did it like 5 times in a row and kept getting the same results everytime. The HDMI connection window pops up on the phone and the only options I have to choose from are Gallery, Music, and Mirror phone on display. :crying:
Just got done taking the dock area of the lapdock apart so the loose cables were out of the cradle part. Did that to test to make sure the usb and hdmi connectors were making a solid connection with the phone in case the dock was getting in the way. Same result. The hdmi connection window pops up with only 3 non-webtop options available like earlier.
Well at least you ruled out the HDMI cable as not faulty. The issue must be the USB cable. You stated that you had no control of the touchpad and keyboard. Does the Photon show that its charging?

It might be weptop itself. I can't think of any reason why it wont work other than that it just denies connecting to the lapdocks. You might need to try unlocking and flashing a different webtop. Seeing as you are on 2.3.5 it might be possible if you didn't take ota to get to 2.3.5. If you did, you may just need a newer lapdock like the lapdock 100. You pretty much ruled out hardware so software is the issue

Try scouring Loki's thread about ubuntop. He, or someone else(?), may have mentioned something about newer webtop refusing connection. It maybe something as simple as replacing an apk if you decide to root

When I bought it it already had 2.3.5 so I'm going to guess the update was the OTA. As much as I would like to test out the lapdock 100 I don't think I'm going to do it. No place around me has one out on display for me to use and I'm definitely not going to buy it blindly since that would make the 3rd lapdock I've bought so far lol
Dang it. Guess I'll just admit I've been beaten by this and move on. Thanks for the help! I really do appreciate it.
I'm having the same issues. atrix lapdock, 2.3.5 ota update. i get unsupported device on my phone and those three options.

I feel your pain, man. If you find anything out please share it. I would love to be able to use webtop on the lapdock I've had for about a month now.
Do you happen to have a mediadock? I'm curious if our phones would still show webtop if used with the mediadock. I don't have a 1 and I'm really not interested in buying one if that also won't work with my phone.

If by "mediadock" you mean the HD dock, yes... well, the Electrify does Webtop on the HD dock. My wife's does (stock, unrooted). Mine only mirrors, but I'm running CM10 and that not doing webtop is a known issue. Webtop sucks anyway (IMO), I'd rather have CM10. But to answer your question, yes webtop works on the HD dock. You just need to bring your own keyboard, mouse, and screen.

I know a lot of people don't have positive feelings about webtop but that isn't my concern. I would like to get it working so I can at least try it. It is a feature this phone is supposed to have yet I haven't even see it on the lapdock I bought just for it.

I've been trying to set it up yesterday through WiFi, but the OSP tool can't find my phone. They're obviously connected to the same router.
Is it true, that the screen has to be woken in order for the phone to be found? Cause that would ruin the whole osp approach for me a bit.
I've enabled the OSP access on the phone btw.
I never got mine to work via bluetooth or wifi, only via usb. I'd like mine to work wirelessly too!
I tried a couple vnc servers instead, but their built-in web clients were not very usable, I didn't have a vnc client installed at the time and didn't have time to mess around with it more, but I think that would work better.
In either case you do need to have the screen unlocked while you're USING it because they mirror what's going on on the screen, rather than just redirecting the screen completely to the virtual display. OSP would let you drag across the virtual screen like you would the physical screen to unlock it. I don't remember what happened with the vnc servers (I think they had a virtual lock/unlock button) but you can always disable the screen locking entirely.
Also, depending on what you need, airdroid might have enough functionality even without an actual screen display.

Man, I never thought I'd use the TV app...

...but I don't even use my cable remote anymore. It is so damn convenient being able to browse movies and shows on my phone and just tap on what I want to watch. HTC really nailed this function, it works flawlessly for me. The IR blaster is insanely strong, I don't even need to point the phone even remotely at my TV or cable box. It also makes playing with my phone while watching TV perfectly justifiable. Brilliant!
Plus, I get to mess with my friends when I'm at their places... "WHY DOES THE CHANNEL KEEP CHANGING?!?!?" mwahahahahaha :victory:
Lol i did that at bestbuy and there like our guy is in the back playing with the wires and im like ok dumbass

No more looking for a lost remote since it's always in my pocket.

Wish there was a way to change TV providers with each remote setup... I stay at my girlfriends house 1-2 nights a week and I have to change from Directv to Time Warner every time. It only takes a minute but it's still annoying.
Awesome functionality/app otherwise! Use it all the time!
yup! the tv app is fun and useful.
In a few months time I am expecting restaurants and some business establishments to forbid people holding a Galaxy S4, HTC One & Xperia Z in their hands upon entering the premises
I was surprised at how well it works. Better than universal remotes - some of them can't change the input (i.e., hdmi, TV, etc.). Soo good - hard to believe this isn't getting more attention. This one excellent feature is better than the S4's several gimmicky ones.

I haven't tried multiple remote setups yet. So if you make a second remote profile you can't set it as a different provider from the first?

I haven't tried the GS4's but I agree that the One's should be getting more attention. It is a great feature that actually feels fully fleshed out. They really did a bang up job with it. The only thing I would like them to add is custom buttons and programmable macros. Then it would be perfect.
The ir blaster on the one works better. Seems stronger and better placed.

Loving the blaster, been real fun at peoples houses. Also very practical at home.
Does anyone know if it can control the DVR? I currently have DirecTV.

It can control the DVR on my Comcast box so I'm assuming it'll control the DirecTV one just fine. One thing I just noticed though is that there is no option to record directly from the guide in the app (at least I don't think), which is a feature I think HTC could easily implement.

Yep! Controls my Directv DVR just fine. Just go to your remote and it's one of the pages available on the bottom.
Controls my DirecTV DVR fine as well.

It was so funny. I was turning off TVs and changing the channels. They were freaking out. They even called the cable company and reset the cable boxes. It was so hard to sit there with a straight face and just act like I was playing on my phone. They kept changing it back to the bulls game and I would change it to golf. lol.
