Slow screen turn-on - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, so, I have my SGS3 for almost a week now. Using Omega v27 and enjoying every second of it.
One thing bothers me (besides the dialer ) - it takes the phone a good 2 seconds to turn on when i press the power button. I'm not talking about restarting itself. I'm talking when the phone is on, there is no app running, and i lock it. Clicking the power button should bring up the unlock screen, but it takes a whooping 2 seconds for it to turn on.
On my previous Galaxy Mini, it was instant.
Is there any way to fix it?

I have the same problem on every S3 i have ever used in my hands.
Its called "wake up lag"... 1.5-2s - its normal and I hate this so much!!!
It´s the time samsung need to wake up modem and so on after going to deep sleep (5s after switching off). You can download some software tools to prevent deep sleep, but its not battery friendly...
Its not a software problem - its a hardware problem - No... its a Samsung problem.

I have never had that problem. I really have no solution apart from a wipe but it definitely seems a issue as I have never faced it.
Sent from my GT-I9300

This is not a problem.
It was there in my S2 after ICS update.
It is present in S3 also and it takes a second before lock screen appears after pressing power or home key.
you have to live with this.

It's Samsung's 'wakeup lag' that seems to appear in every one of their Android phones.
No way to get rid of it other than to flash AOSP/AOKP roms I believe.

S3 Lock Screen Issues - Getting Stuck

weird and terribly disappointing. Once in atleast 15 unlocks, when I press the power/wake button, screen just doesnt respond. I try to swipe, but no response. But when I press wake button to turn off screen and press it again, theres no issues. This happens only during unlocking screen. Did anyone face this issue?
rest all is good..no lag..once unlocked phone works perfectly...no lag..no getting stuck..again, let me tell u this issue happens once in 15-20 lock/unlocks.
I think I have the same issue as you, but in case I don't I will post what I am seeing on my device.
In about the same frequency, say once in every 15 unlocks from phone sleeping, the screen will come on but will be completely unresponsive. Doesn't matter if it is swipe unlock or pin code etc, there is no response to touch input on the screen. In fact, I think the screen is just frozen or the operating system is causing the lock screen to hang.
If the lock screen is hanging, pressing power will:
(a) sometimes make the phone sleep again
(b) make the phone screen kind of glitch/blip and then it takes input again
(c) does nothing and the screen remains on and hung/frozen
Occasionally mashing both the volume key and power key will help fix it, but usually if it is completely stuck I have to do a hard reset (holding HOME+VOL UP+POWER and then selecting reboot from the menu).
Now - I think this could be an app, but not sure.
When I first got the phone, set it up with my Google account etc, it went ahead and downloaded ALL the apps I had installed on my previous phone (HTC Sensation running Android ICS). So if it is an app, it is having issues with this phone, not the OS, imo.
I uninstalled all those automatically downloaded apps, and used the phone for a bit without my normal stuff installed. Then started installing apps singularly.
I think it is either Facebook or Alarm Clock Xtreme. The latter makes more sense given it would be polling the system to find out when to go off, so it is doing more in the background I would expect than Facebook or any other non-system app.
Other apps I have installed/running:
Swiftkey X
3G watchdog
Dolphin Browser HD
ES File Explorer
Winamp (locks without this running or running at all in lock screen mode, so that is not the issue)
Real Calc
Google Drive
Facebook
Alarm Clock Xtreme
It is quite frustrating for a brand new phone to have these issues. Not sure if it is hardware related, and if it is, I want to find out soon so I can take it back to carrier within their 28day device swap RMA period.
Thoughts?
So others may try to help or identify the possible cause / fix .......
What is your firmware version?
Are you rooted, custom ROMs or Mods etc?
Stock ROM,Baseband : XXLE8. Build No :XXALE9.
But my screen responds after i press wake button again. You are right seems to be issue with the app. i will just compare your apps and below are the ones which are common between us.
Facebook
3G watchdog
Dolphin Browser HD --i never use
Google Drive
a fix that worked for me
Steps to the solution that worked for me (so far) were to uninstall:
1. Alarm Clock Extreme (no noticeable result but I wasn't needing that application anyway)
2. I had WIFI Fixer installed because of the problems I experienced with the WIFI connectivity on my Galaxy S3.
I disabled that application and problems seemed to go away for a time, but every so in a while they resurfaced. Much less often than before, though.
I was still stuck with my WIFI problem anyway, so I looked into solutions for that problem and since I could not find a workable solution I uninstalled Wifi Fixer and started tweaking my WIFI settings.
While doing that I noticed that disabling "Network Notification" under the Settings -> WIFI -> Advanced tab fixed both my problems.
Now I can't be 100% sure this solution works for all, but I am pretty sure the application that created the problem was "WIFI Fixer".
It's been more than 4 hours now without the "disabled unlock screen from hell", and I’m very happy.
LOOOL
Actually...
My WIFI problem was not solved.... but I found a solution on another forum , which you can read below:
I dialed *#0011# then pressed menu button, then selected WIFI, and pressed the button to turn off the "WIFI power save mode". Hit back until I was back in the homescreen. WIFI has worked to my satisfaction ever since.
This is not a solution, this is a work-around....
It will remove the standby wifi.... My phone was at 0% battery in one night... But actually yes, the phone doesn't hang up when unlocking.
Someone who had replaced the phone could tell me if the problem is solved with a new one ?

This worked for me!!! Thank you!! I was about to take a hammer to this phone! :good:
I seem to have another problem. When unlocking the phone the screen turns on in a quite ok amount of time, but then when I touch it immediatelly after it turns on it doesn't react to touch. This moment when touch is not working is getting longer and longer depending on how long the system is running, anybody else sees this?

Not sure what ROM and kernel you are using, but at a big guess, try reflash another kernel or with less aggressive settings.

Problem when coming out sleep mode

Hello all,
I have this new baby. It is really cool, but I have a very embarrassing bug.
I use the official stock ROM.
When the phone is in sleep mode, sometimes when I press button to wake up the phone, the screen is black ( or rarely very very dark, darker then the minimal brightness ). I have to press again like to come to sleep mode, then I press to wake up... Several times until one time is the good one.
I think it comes more often when the phone is in sleep for more than few minutes. And sometimes I can unlock it with no prob, and sometimes paf... the bug again...
I tried to reinitialize the phone ( with factory setting ) but nothing, the problem is still here. I searched on internet, and I don't find people with the same bug ( very strange ).
Hope you could help me. Thanks.

Hello I have the same bug. How can it be solved?
Maybe S-voice is interfering. Try turn off s-voice, see how it goes.

Acro S screen doesn't open some times

Hi,
I have Xperia Acro S for a week now.
The mobile is generally great.
I just have some symptom which makes me a bit worried.
The story is like this; the phone is locked, I press the power button to open the screen.... normally it works as it should be.... but some times the screen just shows a fade light and nothing appears on the screen except this fade light. I press the power button again, the fade light disappears, then I press the power button again, the screen opens normally... it works fine after then.
Did it happen to anyone? is there a fix?
Thanks alot,
Gano
I mean it doesnt wake up ... just fade light.... but it works after then with the 2nd trial.
sorry for posting several times... just for clarification .... it is like waking up the phone from the standby mode... the backlight works as well as the buttons (settings, home, back) light up.... i push the power button again... the lights disappear and the phone goes to standby mode again... i press the power button once again... the screen responds normally.
Thanks,
any idea ?
Im also experiencing the same issue recently. Ever since the latest update. 2.45.
I think that the homescreen app crashes resulting in that.
So far i havent found any solution yet.
It occurs occasionally to me. Probably once a day.

Same here, it's like the phone is turned off. It wont react for about 30 seconds. If I have a notification, the light will blink and the screen wont turn on, so I know the phone is "working". It's been like this since the last update, never had this before.
S
Hmm.. Looks like it is a global issue.. Hope it will get solved in the next update..
Thanks alot

I have seen this too occasionally, I think it's usually when I press the power button to sleep phone while an app (browser, facebook, etc) was trying to load data from net. Then when I immediately press again to wake it, the screen does not respond until another try.
Not sure is this bug of latest firmware as I had not spent much time on the old one. But the new firmware definitely heats up more and often even if just doing simple browsing more than old one. Battery seems not so good also. Hope this gets fixed soon.

i agree with you .... seems it happens when there is an application running in the background.

Very strange problem with SGS2 screen

Ok, so i recently exchanged my SGS 1 to an SGS 2 and now i have a weird problem:
right away i flashed SlimIcs 4.2 , everything went fine and the rom was working like it should , but then i noticed that when my phones screen is off and its in idle, the screen lights up every 1minute or so by itself.
I also noticed that it stays in idle normally when charging the phone or when listening to music which seems odd ..
I tried changing the kernel to Siyah and Dorimanx, neither helped
I disabled android logger, disabled wifi and wifi notifications, tried to find a rogue app by using Airblocker app.. No go .
Im running out of ideas, has anyone had this annoying problem? it wouldnt even bother me, but ofcourse its eating my battery up by preventing my phone to sleep properly.
I would really appreciate some help to get my new phone up and running!
Download GSam battery monitor from play store and select app usage. then at the top, select app sucker and a drop down box will appear. Then select "view number of times waking device".
It should then show what app is waking it up.
But after you installed the app, wait half an hour or so, so it can get a reading.

Ok. I installed the app, juicedefender and 2x battery were on the top of the list.. so i deleted them but the problem continues.. ideas?
Umm. There is a way to put the phone into safe mode. It boots up without the apps you downloaded. Maybe try that and see if it is an app that's causing it.
I'm just about to find out How to put into safe mode.
Edit: 1. Switch off the phone by pressing on the Power button.
2. Then turn the phone back on, while it is turning on press and hold the Menu button.
3. Now continue to hold*the Menu button until you see the Home screen. On the home screen you see it say Safe Mode on the left hand corner.

I once got into it by-mistake once.
Think it was by repeatedly pressing the menu button when the bootanimation starts
EDIT: Seems I got a bit late when replying
i cant manage to get into safe mode.. but weird as it is, the phone doesnt turn the screen off so often than before.. got a 1%/ h drain last night.. but it still does it. Soo frustrating -.-
I downloaded BetterBatteryStats , and will run a few tests, i will report back tommorrow
To put into safe mode, hold menu soft key soon as the boot animation begins. Then release when phone is fully booted.

Just cant get it to boot in safemode.. i have a feeling that the phone has some other issues too cause, when i turn it off it wont go off , only reboot back. Anyways, i managed to produce a log with BetterBatteryStats app.. if anyone with knowledge could take a look
EDIT: I have pretty muched solved the draining problem from over 4%/h to 1%/h , my screen is still waking up now and then, but it doesnt bother me since my drain is good. Thanks for everyone who helped me get this phone working like it should!

capacitive button issue

This morning I started having an issue with my edge.
Whenever I touch the screen, both capacitive buttons light up. Causing for irregular behaviour when using the phone. Is there a screen calibration mode or should I return it for a new phone.
Mine does the same thing. I'm pretty sure that's standard.
Agreed. Sounds like normal behavior to me.
I fail to see how this is an issue?
It's an issue in the sense that previously on galaxy models they only light up when you press them. It's a bit ridiculous and waste of battery to have them lighting up every time you interact with the phone.
And for reasons unknown, every s6 excluding the att version has had the setting to turn off the lights removed.

That is not true.
The S5 cap lights also light up when you touch the screen. That is how it should work. It would ridiculous for it to NOT light up every time you interact with the phone (assuming you wanted them on at all).
It would be nice to have the option to turn them off. That doesn't make it an issue--more of a feature request.

Fix for this issue
Hi,
please check my reply in the S6 thread on the same issue: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=60009456&postcount=12
Hi, I have the S6 Edge. The touch key lights are not working at all. In Settings I have the Touch Key Light duration set to "Always On". Power Saving Mode is off, but they still won't come on. The keys do blink briefly during startup, so I do know they physically work. Any ideas? Thanks
Some times my capacitive buttons stop working altogether. It happened to me twice so far. It lasts about a minute. No response no light, nothing. Anyone else?

This is not on the SM-G925W8 version either.
Sometimes these buttons stop working all together and sometimes they both switch to become the task switcher button. The Back Key will no longer function to move you back a page! Very annoying. I am thinking the only fix might be a complete factory reset??
BTW, when this happens, something is loading in the background. Just before my buttons stop working, a get a very small vibration similar to when your device boots up. From that point forward the buttons don't work. It can last 1/2 hour or up to 2-3 hours before it clears itself up??
Update: I did a factory reset and it didn't do any good. There are literally thousands of posts on the web about this issue and no resolution. If you have this issue, I think you need to send your unit back.
I have a SAMSUNG-SM-G925A running stock AT&T Android 5.02
I dunno, received my Edge today and my capacitive buttons only light up when I click them.
I took my phone back today and Rogers very quickly gave me a replacement phone. Capacitive buttons working well on this one!!
Everything was working as expected and the two buttons (Back and running apps) stopped working, i made a factory rest and it did not help, I am suspecting the cover that have magnets in it and I removed it, shut down the phone for few minutes but it did not help, I will try extending the time it is shut down and see the results.
For those with button light issues try this app "Galaxy Button Lights". I'm not allowed to post external links here but you can find it in Google Play.
