Official Sound Quality Thread - Nokia Lumia 920

Lets talk about SQ, DAC and anything related to thread title here:
Nokia is known to produce good sounding mobiles even in the old days... Since 920 bares same chipset that of HTC One-S (which is good enough), i expect 920 to be good also...

I want the old Nokia sound output
Sent from my Lumia 900 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App

The WP8 Lumia's will have a EQ with customizable settings!
http://www.wpcentral.com/nokias-custom-equalizer-gets-picture-lumia

The DAC will be good my sister has the One S and it does sound good better than my One X so can only imagine with dolby and EQ this will sound just as awesome.
I just love the free music streaming I'm a music lover and that will be a pretty nifty service.
The more I look at WP8 the more I want one!

No good DAC, no sale.

Dunno if anyone has seen the 920 in person, although it is probably hard to judge this anyway on the showfloor. This has always been a priority on a top-rate handset for me: Speaker quality. I've been generally disappointed with smartphone speakers in general compared to my older candybar and even slider phones, since modern smartphones are so thin. Nokia is known for great speakers in their phones, at least back when I still followed Nokia a good 4-5 years ago, and their stereo speakers were little boomboxes. How good do you think the Lumia 920 will be in this area? Can anyone with a Lumia 900 or 800 comment? The best smartphone I've heard so far in the modern smartphone era has been the Galaxy Note. It has a great full sound and bass, for a phone that is. The smaller Samsung phones are quite far behind their big brother. The HTC One X was okay but I heard the older models had terrible speakers.
On another note, my closed thread is near the top of the page. Either xda is a terrible place to gauge windows phone and nokia activity or there is something seriously wrong with the buzz surrounding this phone, which all the blogs and tech sites would have you believe otherwise.

I dont think you can base the fact the one s has good audio down to the DAC in the dual core snapdragon S4 because quite frankly the sony xperia T sucks plain and simply it is horrid low volume and no bass.
Also I really wish nokia went android as I would have snapped this phone up have always loved nokia phones and their cameras/video and sound quality and battery life not to mention the the great multi tasking.

A note to all...
I see some troubling comments in this thread, but rather than address them directly, I'm just going to leave all of you with some thoughts to consider...
1) Moderators here do their best to serve the interests of all members as a group, we do not single anyone out to make things difficult for them.
2) If you have a problem with a moderating decision, send a PM to the moderator(s) explaining your views and thoughts. Griping about it publicly in a post is not going to solve anything and makes the situation worse.
3) All discussions on XDA, in both posts and PMs, are to take place in a respectful manner. No personal attacks are allowed. I see some language here that can be considered violations, but I'll allow some time for the members to edit their own posts before I do it myself.
4) Any member who sees a questionable post is encouraged to use the "Report Post" button available at the top of every post to bring it to a moderator's attention.
The traffic in this forum is still relatively light, but that will undoubtedly change as the release date nears. Let's keep the discussions on topic.
EDIT: Unnecessary personal comments have been removed from this thread.

N9 player will be good for this device.

This looks pretty positive:

Being a big fan of the sound on my Nokia N9 and iPhone (4/4s/5), the sound on the Lumia 920 is easily on-par.. I'm paring them with Shure SE535's ..
For those curious, I'm NOT a fan of the sound of the HTC One X or Lumia 800..
I'm a happy camper as I was ultra concerned about this.. Nokia did it right with the 920 on the audio quality front.. :good:

Agreed the sound quality on the 800 really isn't great despite the update the pushed out a while back. My N9 is way better so it's good to know the 920 is on par.
I still dont understand how the N9 takes better pictures and video despite having the same sensor as the 800. A lot of this stuff comes down to software so atleast nokia didnt screw that one up.

Anyone seen any hard stats on audio quality? Places I normally see them have not reviewed 920 yet.

IMHO, i think the Lumia 800 is a great phone, but overall the Titan beats it. But i still find myself wanting the Lumia. I don't know if it's the looks, the display, or just the ability to own something crafted so beautifully, but i just want it. They are both truly great phones and both really push the OS forwards and into the limelight, so to speak.
What does everyone think? I'll post this on both the Lumia 800 and HTC Titan boards, so more people see it.
Thanks for having a little read. Let me know your opinions below please. Thankyou geek community.
I looked at both as well, though I was always biased toward the Lumia. It was, after all, the only thing I really wanted, since I'm a big Nokia fan. I just wanted to make sure I was making the right decision.
Yes, the Titan has a larger display. The Lumia, hands down, has a much more beautiful display, IMO.
After playing w/ 4.7", 4.3" (HTC HD2), and 3.7", I do prefer the smaller form factor. It feels easier to do things with one hand.
Speaking of hands. For me, the Lumia feels amazing. I love that the protective sleeve looks exactly like the phone. And, I prefer my phones to be a bit flashy. I like to own phones that other people generally don't have, or that I'm not likely to bump into. I'm that way about cologne, too. I once had someone recognize a scent I was wearing. Granted, it was a common designer, but I never wore it again. I much prefer "OMG, what are you wearing" and "OMG, what a sexy phone!" HAHAHA
The Lumia has its downsides. Music playback quality is sub-par, even through ear phones. The lows are missing. Internet Sharing has yet to be enabled, and lack of notification light is something I notice.
Having said that, I'm very happy with my beautiful cyan smartphone.
Well, the Titan has just dropped to £383.99 ($592.07) on Handtec.co.uk. If it was Amazon, clove or expansys i would by now, but I've heard really mixed reviews of Handtec. Some people say its fine, but lots of people say they sent the wrong item or it was damaged or came weeks, sometimes even months late, even after paying for next day delivery. Has anyone here brought their Lumia or any other phone on Handtec.co.uk? Cheers.

I had an awesome experience with Handtec.co.uk
They were the only business to confirm the product code of the Lumia 800 and the correct bands on it. Other sites either did not reply, or quoted Nokia's website. Handtec also processed the order and I received here in Seattle 36hrs after I submitted the order. Another user (halfnelson...) ordered his Lumia from handtec as well. That's how I learned of them. He had a fantastic experience, too.
Are you in the UK?

Good for you! Bet you'll have it real soon.
Ima gonna bet that the Lumia 900 won't officially make it out of the US for quite some time. AT&T loves their exclusivity contracts. If you were to obtain an unlocked AT&T model, odds are likely that they will have forced Nokia to make it tri-band UMTS, just to screw everyone else out of a fully functioning device.

Yeah wouldn't surprise me at all. I hate it when carriers get exclusives. Don't see why Nokia couldn't sell the 800 and/or 900 through their official site sim-free. Oh well, if europe doesn't get the 900 maybe something else will be announced around july/august time in line with Apollo. Maybe even something with a high res screen and 32GB storage. We can only hope i suppose

Aha i've already got that habit unfortunately. It's not fun :/ I always feel guilty after clicking 'Order'. Then when the device comes through the post i lose the guilt and get ridiculously exited Got a Galaxy Nexus, Sensation XL, Omnia 7, Desire HD and now Titan. Might have to sell some soon

I worked for AT&T from 2001-2007 and formed my habit there. I got the first color phone from Nokia... the 7210. I then splurged on the 8801, the the 8600 Luna. Then, dropped down to the just-as-flashy-but-less-expensive-and-well-featured 6700 classic (silver). There were other Nokias as well, but not so hot as these ones. Glad to be back in with them again. The titan is nice, but it's missing the sexy factor. Well, unless size matters. Then, it's the clear winner.
After I tried them both out in the store I chose the Lumia 800 (went home and ordered it from Amazon.de for 380 euroes, which was a lot cheaper than the Titan at 490 euroes..).
The Lumia just looks so much better, and feels more comfortable in the hand (also usable with 1 hand.. which was, obviously, more difficult with the titan, then again.. I have medium hands).
The AMOLED display is also far more superb than the SLCD on the Titan (in my opinion). I did not notice much difference on the processor side, but then again, the difference between them are really small.
After the update my phone lasts easily 3 days on battery with quite a lot of usage, which is in my opinion quite good for a smartphone.
Oh, you should have compared the "sound" when talking in it.. it is a phone you know! For me the Lumia wins here tho, since it has a noice canceling function which makes it easier for someone to hear you in the other end when it is filtering away sounds from for example your car or background noise. It also has good sound into your ear.

Thanks for the feedback. I can't put sound as a category, as i haven't had both phones, so i don't know about sound quality. I've only played with them briefly in store. Anyway, Titan is coming tomorrow.
Build quality, sound, support, lumia has many wins you didn't address.

Build quality would be a tie IMO. Lots of people with the lumia and n9 complain of creaking from the chassis, and people with the titan praise it's build, so idk. Sound the Titan is a downright winner. The Lumia 800 has quite frankly pathetic sound quality from what I've heard (albeit only a sample clip) and what people say on this forum. I don't know what you mean by support? Both would be sim free for me so the OS updates would be received at exactly the same time i would of thought.
Replaceable battery as a category
It's a question of taste, I know... The sealed enclosure is a dream for phone designers, and leads to gorgeous phones. However, the ability to swap batteries is a plus for road warriors. A plus for Titan, in my opinion...

Sound Enhancer Updated Fixed Muffled Call Quality??

Prior to the update I had continuous complaints from my wife regarding poor call quality on my Titan - sometimesto the point of not being able to understand me.
I know this was an ongoing unaddressed isue but in the last week I have had no complaints.
The only change has been the update to the Sound Enhancer.
Did they bundle a fix for the call quality - possibly affecting the noise canceling mic or is this just a lucky week??
How and where did get/find the update you mention?
I had no improvements from the update. After owning the phone for three weeks, my store has agreed to a refund so am returning it. I love the phone but the muffled voice problem was unbearable and recently I have been getting pink spots when taking a photo. I have no idea what phone to buy next but it must be a windows phone.

Through the Marketplace notification.
@tboy - go for the Lumia800 or Lumia900 mid-May. - I got Lumia800 and love it!
@OP - After sound enhancement muffled voice isn't fixed for me and even the graphics lag with SRS on exists. So am not sure what they've fixed with the update.

So do you own Lumia 800 and HTC Titan?
Agreeing with drupads comment, definitely either the 800 or 900 lumia, I have gone for a 900 after having the massive screen on the Titan, The 800 is a lovely phone which has now been donated to the missus, The 900 has a 4.3 inch screen compared to Titans 4,7 , a front facing camera whereas the 800 lumia hasn't, Am still going to keep the Titan as a back up phone and luckily haven't had any problems since the screen died and was repaired , There definitely seems to have been a huge batch of Titans which suffer from the muffled voice syndrome. Personally the Titan will be the last HTC I shall own due to their lack of enthusiasm and advertising towards WP7, Think Nokia has the right idea.
how would your enthusiasm be if after leading the way with WP with Mozart,Trophy,HD7,Surround,HTC7 Pro,Radar,Titan and Titan2 microsoft flung 10's of millions to another company for a windows version of the N9 which is no real advance on the existing Titan1. nokia's next effort better be something unreal and i don't mean a 41mp look at me camera

Yes, I got Lumia 800 just recently! I wish I had done so before, but the bigger screen tempted me to buy my first and the only HTC ever!

I never had HTC until I wanted to get a Windows Phone with huge screen. I had Toshiba TG01 (WinMo 6.5). Then ended up also getting HTC Sensation XL. Never use it though. But these two HTC are the only HTCs I've ever owned in my life and Titan is definitely the last Windows Phone on HTC for me. I will stick with Nokia for Windows Phone. HTC cares more about its Android brigade than Windows Phones.

Should i buy it??

Hallo guys!
I could use your advise. One of my friends is interested in buying a new phone and she likes the Nokia Lumia 800. Problem is i know 2 people who have this phone and both of them have issues regarding the phone's call quality. One of them has a problem when using the hands-free, as he cant hear well enough the person who's talking to him. The other has a more serious problem. When he talks with someone, the other person hears him funny, like he's in some tunnel or something. Terrible quality. He's taken the phone to Nokia Service 2 times and they said it was fine but the problem never went away... Is this a common problem?? Because she talks a lot on her phone, and if this is a common problem she should look for an other phone to buy.
Thanks in advance for your help....

I have the nokia lumia 800 for a week, nothing to say, enviable ...
is too good, fast and calls there is not a problem, Swoop ... you will not regret.

Thanks a lot for your answer my friend!
Is the new Sony Xperia P a better choice?? Or should i stick to the Lumia 800 what do you think??
Hi. Xperia P better choise in all way if you want android but if you want good WP7 buy HTC first gen. I have nokia Lumia 800 with DLOAD bootloader and it sucks. I cant flash custom ROMS and with stock ROM Lumia is useless phone. First of all stock Lumia dont have many good things like BT transfer, File manager or music equalizer, photos bad quality, music plays very low volume, battery drain fast. One thing is good on the Lumia is the screen and thats it. I will sold my Lumia for ~230EU and buy HTC 1st generation for about 150EU. 1st gen HTC phones can be easily unlock and flash custom ROM even Nokia Edition with all good Nokia stuff and with equalizer, with BT transfer, file manager and other good things.

From the sound of the question I don't think this person is looking to flash roms every 5 mins. The battery drain issue has been fixed for months now. I would say that for the prices you can get it now its a bargain.
The screen just rocks
free sat nav
exclusive apps
great camera features like group shot and action shot just rock
its a great size and solid build
its really fast
and so on
you said you know 2 people with it already so I don't need to go on about that only to say that my call quality rocks. Sometime though mine freezes and I need to lock and unlock the screen but I think that's more how I treat it (very rough and I have 4 kids under 5 and under) as it only started doing it recently.
I would sum it up like this - If you want a high end phone and use it enough to need a contract over £20 a month then wait for windows phone 8, if you however want a great phone at an amazing price (i have seen it free on a £15 a month contract inc data) then you wont go wrong. There is simply nothing in its price bracket that will come close to it. You will get a hop end phone at feature phone prices and unlike android you wont end up with something that is underpowered to run the os.

Nokia Lumia 800 without custom ROM is peace of sh*t. You dont get big part of amazing features. For the baterry I dont know what do you mean "The battery drain issue has been fixed for months now" - lie because battery drain very fast.

Buying a Lumia 800, a few questions

I recently bought a SGStab 2 7" for general use, so I dont need an android phone (HTC Sensation XL) as well, so im interested in an (Used but excellent condition in Box) 800. Ive used WP7 in the past, so im aware of the limits.. cant backup SMS or Call logs, need Zune and No SDCard slot, and need a microSIM, but ive been reading around about the 800 and have a few questions.
In some reviews, theyve commented on the poor video and photo camera quality, poor music and poor battery life of the initial models, but also said that Nokia provide Firmware updates.
Are these updates available and have these issues been fixed, is Tango on it yet, I am used to Beats Audio on XL with Sennheisers so, I like good music quality.
Whats your opinion of the Lumia, are there any limitations or gripes you have (I dont drive so not bothered about Nokia Drive Maps)..
Is there anyting I should look for when i pick it up, I read that some had battery issues and bricking.
Thanks in Advance

well... the lumia's sound SUX.. anyway, I noticed that the new firmware in 7.8 makes it even worse and the max volume is 50% lower... so I downgraded it back to 7.5 (download the firmware over navifirm, and then put the files to nokia caresuite folder and flashed it with caresuite... just google how to) and then used seveneighter app (here on xda.. the force update thread) to update the software to 7.8 as this method leaves the firmware as it is and just update the OS and the sound is now acceptable... still **** compared to iPhones, but usable.
If you're on 7.5... well... that's how it is.. probably hardware issue as they patched it several times and it is still pure ****, but what I don't understand how can they fail it even more with the new firmware
Really dissapointing quality from nokia... I was used to top notch music performance on their hardware.. and they even promote the lumia range as some kind of music super phones and they all suck at audio.. yes even the 920 has audio quality issues -.-
I don't know exactly what range you mean by "bass", apparently anywhere below mid is the least despicable range for this phone, obviously it's not good but not as bad mid-high which is pretty much unbearable even for the most random listener IMHO.
