ICS 4.0.4 Update - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Try this step by step and it should work!
Requirements
A Samsung Galaxy S2 GT-I9100
A Windows PC
Your phone’s USB cable
7-Zip, WinRAR, or any other programs that can extract archive files
Handset USB drivers installed on the PC. You may install the drivers by installing Samsung Kies.
Enable USB Debugging on your handset.
Disable antivirus, firewall, and other security software. Also disable Samsung Kies and other software that accesses
your phone. Such software can interfere with the procedure in this guide.
Download the following files to your computer:
Android 4.0.4 ICS firmware build XXLQ5 (I9100XXLQ5_I9100OXALQ5_OXA.zip, 387.1 MB)
copy and paste
hotfile.com/dl/162208594/226b6f0/I9100XXLQ5_I9100OXALQ5_OXA.zip.html
Odin3 1.85 (Odin 1.85.zip,199 kB)
Make sure your phone’s battery is charged up to 75% or more to avoid interruptions during the process.
Backup all personal data on your phone to make sure you have a copy of your personal data (e.g., contacts, SMS, MMS,
Internet settings, Wi-Fi passwords, and the like) in case the procedure in this guide erases such data.
For backup tips, check our guides on how to sync your data to the cloud and how to create local backups of your
mobile data.
Instructions
Extract the contents of the I9100XXLQ5_I9100OXALQ5_OXA.zip file to get these files:
I9100_CODE_I9100XXLQ5_CL753921_REV02_user_low_ship.tar.md5
GT-I9100-MULTI-CSC-OXALQ5.tar.md5
MODEM_I9100XXLQ5_REV_02_CL1165929.tar.md5
u1_02_20120326_emmc_EXT4_8GB.pit
Extract the contents of the Odin 1.85.zip file to obtain the Odin3 v1.85.exe file.
Double-click on the Odin3 v1.85.exe file to launch Odin on your computer.
Unplug your phone from the computer if it is connected. After unplugging, turn your phone off.
Put your phone into Download Mode. To do this, hold the Volume Down, Home, and Power buttons together until the
screen turns on. Press the Volume Up key to put your phone into Download Mode.
Connect your phone to the PC using the USB cable. In Odin, a message saying “Added!!” will appear on the bottom left
of the window.
In the Odin window, click on the PDA button and select the
I9100_CODE_I9100XXLQ5_CL753921_REV02_user_low_ship.tar.md5file. The file should show on the space beside the PDA
button.
Click on the PHONE button and select MODEM_I9100XXLQ5_REV_02_CL1165929.tar.md5 file. The file should show on the
space beside the Phone button.
Click on the CSC button and select the GT-I9100-MULTI-CSC-OXALQ5.tar.md5file. The file should show on the space
beside the CSC button.
Don’t alter anything else in Odin. Leave everything else as is, except for adding the files mentioned in steps 7 to
9.
Click on the Start button in Odin to start flashing the firmware to your phone.
After the flashing completes, your phone will automatically reboot. You should be able to get a “PASS” message on
the top left part of Odin.
NOTE: If you get a FAIL message or Odin gets stuck, disconnect your phone from the PC and close Odin. Remove the
battery from your phone, re-insert it, and place your phone into Download Mode again. Open Odin and do the procedure
starting from step 6.
Once you see the Samsung logo on your phone’s screen, you can safely disconnect your phone from the PC.
Hope this helps!

Rooting guide of Intratech DOES work! :)

Hi all! The rooting guide of Intratech given here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278 DOES NOT WORK! I have an SGS II Kernel version of KE8 (India) and I tried to follow the steps given in the guide, but when I open ODIN and connect my phone in Download mode with my laptop via USB Cable, ODIN is not connecting to the phone. The box meant to turn yellow does NOT change color. Nothing happens at all. Why is this so? I cannot post in the relevant thread because I am a newbie in the forun
Have you installed kies first to get the drivers?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
Yes, of course, I have the latest version of Kies installed on my laptop and I use it regularly to connect with my SGS II. I kept Kies closed when trying the rooting procedure as mentioned in Intratech's guide. Started phone in download mode. Opened Odin on laptop, then connected phone via USB........the box which is supposed to turn yellow on connection, doesn't light up. Nothing happens at all.

I suggest to you that the overwhelming majority of the people who use the guide will disagree with you and provide evidence to the fact that it does, indeed, work. The fact that it does not work for you suggest that you are doing something wrong or have a problem with your computer.
I would suggest that you ensure that KIES is also closed in the system tray of your computer before opening Odin and connecting the phone. Also ensure that your computer has an internet connection and is able to connect to windows update to download and install drivers. If that doesn't work then change USB port or computer.
By all means, if you find a way that works then feel free to write your own guide. More information is good and maybe others might find your method, if you discover one, easier to follow.
@Intratech: Hi. Thanks for your reply. Ok, so it is not working for me. Can you help?
My laptop is working on Windows 7 Home Premium which is upto date in all respects. My USB port is working fine as I am able to connect my SGS II to Kies through that. Kies was closed when I tried to connect to Odin. Odin version is 1.85. While the phone (in download mode) is connected to the laptop, and Odin is Open, nothing happens. Nothing.

Is kies closed in the system tray as well?
Yes, Kies is closed in system tray also. Fully closed. Odin opens, and I see the Odin screen as per your screen shots, but the box which is supposed to light up yellow, does not.
Are you using the Samsung USB cable or a HTC one?
Samsung USB cable which came with the phone box pack. I can see the Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time boxes checked. Nothing else is checked, not even the PDA button. The box saying ID:COM (which is supposed to light up) is blank.
u need to check pda and load the file u want to flash it
then click on start
Look in your program and features list, found in control panel, and see if you have a listing for Samsung USB driver for mobile phones there. If you do then uninstall it and uninstall KIES. Download a new copy of KIES from Samsung and install it. After installing it, make sure you don't have USB debug ticked, connect the phone and leave it until all the drivers install. After that remove the device and lose KIES. Put the tick in USB debugging and connect the phone and leave it so that any needed drivers install. After this put the phone in download mode and connect it, without opening KIES or ODIN, and leave it to download any drivers needed. If it downloads and install any drivers wait for it to finish, once it does then you can go ahead and use Odin normally.
If this doesn't work your PC is at fault, fix it.

How you going to flash without connecting to the device?
Turn USB debugging off on phone .USB connection should be to a motherboard port .
Reboot phone set phone to connect in USB mass storage mode .
Connect cable wait for Windows to load drivers . You should be able to browse phone via Windows explorer if USB drivers are correct .If so remove cable and reboot phone to download mode . Open Odin select files to load connect cable .
That fails then
Rooting guide of intratech does not work! for you your PC or your phone but for everyone else so give up .
jje
@cyberwarfare: Yes, I tried that. The file loaded, I pressed start. Yet nothing happened. I just saw one line notification in the left hand side column of Odin, which read something like "successes: 0/failures: 0". I am speaking from memory here. Nothing really happened even after loading PDA and pressing the Start button.
@Intratech: Yes, both Kies and Samsung USB Driver for Mobile Phones are there in my program list. I downloaded Kies from their India support site : http://www.samsung.com/in/support/d...1&prd_mdl_cd=GT-I9100LKAINU&srchword=GT-I9100
Worth mentioning here that the USB debug check box was ticked when I tried to Root with Odin.
So basically, you're asking me to uninstall & reinstall Kies and its drivers. Ok, will do. It will take time so will do it when I have a little more time on my hands. Thanks for your help & your time. I appreciate. If you have time, then look at my other post here which says, "7 major issues with SGS II" ...... and help with solving my other issues like that of bluetooth not connecting and phone ringer's erratic behaviour. Thanks a ton.
Mate I haven't used the Indian firmware so I'm not too sure about troubleshooting it. There is an Indian thread in the general forum where you may be able to get more help with the issues you have.
@JJEgan: Thanks for replying. All my USB Ports are on the motherboard itself, worth mentioning that the same USB port works fine when I connect the phone to the laptop. Am able to transfer files to and fro via the same USB port.
"set phone to connect in USB mass storage mode".....how do I do that? Where to find that in phone settings?
I am able to browse the contents/files on the phone very well...so this proves my drivers are fine. So which basically means, that Intratech's rooting guide does not work FOR ME! Happy? This may be a problem specific to the India specific phones....Kernel version is 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKE8-CL214845

@Intratech: Thanks mate. I've posted my problem in the India specific thread also.....lets see if someone replies. But the problem is not with the rooting procedure, the problem is that I can't even seem to get started with the procedure as there is no connection between Odin and the phone.
Nah, it's not with the firmware. The other Indians who use it have no issue following the guide.
Please try and reinstall everything as I've stated and see if that work. Also, when you go into download mode what do you see on the screen?
In download mode I see a static warning on the screen which tells me of the risk and tells me I have to press the VOL down button to cancel this, and there is a yellow triangle at the bottom. The screen stays there as I connect the USB cable to the laptop.

You need to read the instructions start off by reading what it says on that screen .Do not read half of the instructions like you are its very dangerous flashing if you cannot read and follow the instructions and i advice you dont flash .
The screen message you are not reading is the sentence above the one you posted .
To install custom rom press Vol Up key .

CF-Auto-Root Grand 2 SM-7102

Hello Peeps,
Here is the tutorial on how to root Jelly Bean 4.3 Android on Grand 2 SM-N7102 Using CF-Auto-Root:
Prerequisites:
Install the USB driver with USB debugging enabled from the Developers Tool
Make a necessary backup of any important data.
Make sure your device has enough battery juice in it (80%)
Step 1: Download and extract the following files:
Download:
Zip File
Odin v3.09
You should get a .tar.md5 file within extracted folder. Extract Odin zip file and you will get Odin3 v3.09.exe along with few other files. You could use any extracting software such a WinZip, Winrar or 7zip to extract files.
Step 2: Put Your Phone In Download Mode
Now turn off your phone and wait few seconds for vibration to confirm complete switch off. Then boot it into the Download Mode. To do that press and keep holding the Volume down and Home button at the same time, with these two buttons pressed press the Power Button all simultaneously. When a warning message is displayed press on the Volume Up button to continue to the process.
Step 3: Run Odin
Now run Odinv3.09.exe in as an Administrator because an Admin privilege is required to complete this installation process without any hiccups. Now connect your phone with your PC using USB cable. Once you connect, you will see a message under Odin’s message box in the bottom left-panel displaying “Added”. You should also see ID: COM port with a number and colored box in Yellow/Blue i.e. if you successfully added your device, if not then you can do the following Steps:
Re-start the same procedure.
Try Uninstalling and then re-installing the drivers again and restart you pc.
Use different USB cable.
Ensure KIES is not running in the background.
Disable Your Antivirus.
Uninstall or disable any program that may be causing conflicts such as your OEM’s PC Suite or any other third party software.
Step 4: Staring the flashing process
In Odin, make sure Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time checkboxes are only two that are selected. DO NOT SELECT ANY OTHER OPTION! Click the AP button and select that file CF-Auto-Root-ms013g-ms013gxx-smg7102.tar.md5 you downloaded earlier in Step 1 with extension .tar.md5. Now, once you are ready, hit the START button to begin the flashing process. This process may take a minute or two to finish. Please do not disconnect your phone once Odin sets in motion. As the installation process completes, your phone will reboot itself and you will see a PASS message with green background in the left-most box at the very top of the Odin. You can now unplug the USB cable to disconnect it from the computer.
Voila, You have successfully rooted your phone
Closed. This is already here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-grand-2/development/cf-root-root-galaxy-grand-2-t2698428

[Q] Device Doesn't Load Completely After Root

I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 from T-Mobile and I tried rooting the phone using the procedure below obtained form an external link as I was running Android 4.3:
**********************************************************************************
Requirements:
T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S3 SGH-T999 with USB data cable
CF-Root zip package (Download HERE)
Also download Odin3 v3.09 Flashing Utility
Make sure that you’ve installed USB drivers on your PC.
Go to Phone Settings>Developers Options and Enable USB debugging.
Before you start rooting your phone, make sure that you’ve got good enough battery charge.
Last but not the least, Proceed at your own risk.
How to Root T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S3 (SGH-T999) on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean Firmware
1. First of all, extract the CF-Auto-Root-d2tmo-d2tmo-sght999.zip and Odin v3.09 files to a new folder on your desktop.
2. Now from the extracted folder run Odin3-v3.o9 application on your PC.
3. Next Reboot your T-Mobile Galaxy S3 into Download Mode:
Turn Off Galaxy S3.
Press and Hold down the Volume Down+Home+Power buttons at the same time till you see a warning on your screen.
Further hit the Volume Up button to continue.
4. While in download mode connect your GS3 to PC via the USB data cable. Just make sure that Odin3 detects your device.
5. Also make sure that only Auto Reboot and F. Reset Times options are checked and rest leave the default Odin settings.
6. Finally click the PDA button and from the extracted folder select the CF-Rooted kernel file and hit the START to flash the kernel.
7. Wait for Odin3, When completed, Odin will notify you via the PASS!! message in Odin and at this stage your phone will automatically reboots.
**********************************************************************************
I used Odin3 v3.09 and got a "Pass" message at the end and the phone rebooted as stated in the instructions.
However, it seems that my phone starts up but doesn't load completely. I have device encryption on my phone (as required by work to access work e-mails) and have to enter a password before I can get to my lock screen and though I can enter my password to get past the first lever of encryption, it doesn't load past the Android screen. The snapshots below show both the password entry screen and the android screen on which my phone freezes and doesn't load past.
My question is, is the website above lacking in some directions and did I mess anything up? I'm assuming the phone is not bricked as it still is able to turn on and I'm able to still enter passwords. Is the only way to correct this through a hard factory reset perhaps?
Any assistance on getting the phone up and running would be appreciated!
You might want to ask in correct forum, this is i9300 (int'l s3) forum.

[Q] Samsung S3 mini i8200L - Hard Bricked

Hi All,
Need some help. My Samsung S3 mini i2800L was flashed with the wrong firmware in an attempt to upgrade to Jellybean 4.2.2 using odin and it failed . It remained in download mode and I did a battery pull ,now the phone is absolutely dead. Black Screen for all the following:Recovery Mode and Download Mode .The phone wont power on at all. The only sign of life , is when I plugged into my girl friend's Toshiba laptop via usb cable and it searched and installed the drivers. In addition Windows makes a sound when the device is plugged in and unplugged, but is not being recognized by Kies or Odin. I also tried a USB JIG with no success.
Is there any debrick file that I can use for to place on my SD card and attempt to boot from SD, or is JTAG the only option left?
yes!!! you can UNBrick it!!!
OK ... good news for you is it can still be read by the comp when connected (prompts by audio signal) ... it wont take more than 2 min to unbrick your phone... tell me have if you have a stock ROM available for your device?

The only sign of life , is when I plugged into my girl friend's Toshiba laptop via usb cable and it searched and installed the drivers. In addition Windows makes a sound when the device is plugged in and unplugged, but is not being recognized by Kies or Odin. I also tried a USB JIG with no success.
Is there any debrick file that I can use for to place on my SD card and attempt to boot from SD, or is JTAG the only option left?

OK if you have stock ROM in md5 then follow these steps
1) copy the md5 file on desktop
2. Download Odin 3.07
3. Switch off your phone and boot Galaxy S3 Mini I8200L into Download
Mode by pressing and holding the Volume Down+Home+Power buttons
(long press until the boot screen appear), now press Volume Up key to
proceed to Download Mode .IN CASE IT doesn't WORK TRY EVERY COMBINATION SO AS TO ACHIEVE 6TH STEP... IF NOTHING WORKS THEN JUST CONNECT THE PHONE WITHOUT PRESSING ANY COMBINATIONS...
4. Extract the downloaded Odin3.07 zip file and run the Odin3 v3.07.exe
file as an administrator (Right click on the .exe file and click on Run as
administrator)
5. Now connect your Galaxy S3 Mini I8200L to your computer via USB
cable
6. In Odin3 screen, you should see a COM Port number like “0:[COM7]” at
ID:COM section and “Added!” text at the message box. This means your
device has been detected by Odin3.
7. Make sure that, only the “Auto Reboot” and “F. Reset Time” options are
checked.
8. Now, extract the downloaded firmware .zip file, you’ll find a firmware file
with extension .tar.md5
9. In Odin screen, click on PDA button and select the firmware file with
.tar.md5 extension (The firmware file look something like:
I8200LXXDLJ5_I8200LODDDLI7_INU.tar.md5)
10. Now, click on the Start button to begin the installation process, wait few
moments.
11. Once completed, you would see “PASS!” message in ID:COM port having
green background
12. Your phone should automatically reboot after completion
13. You can now disconnect your phone from computer
14. Finish.
