HTC One X+ a pain to Dev for. - HTC One X+

HTC does a really bad job with sources, some of us already know that.
Some things you might want to know
1- the One X+ Can not flash a custom rom with its boot loader locked, unless of course there an S OFF method, but that's a low possibility. In other words HTC in some cases takes its time to release a boot loader unlock method. Usually they do a good job with this. What they suck at is giving Kernel sources. We won't see a custom kernel until December if the device was released in October
2- Its hard to do ports based of sense, so development could go for the worst with very little to no source and playing around with sense is not really a walk in the park
The one x+ looks like a good device. Hopefully T Mobile picks it up over here in the US soon.
Just giving a heads up.

As previous One X great Devs found a way to move on development, sure X+ will have a lot of dev!

It's not a big improvement against the One X (international) though, but after the new Nexus will be a LG, I will maybe even buy this device as my next phone and will do some stuff for it..

Not so much.
"Wow, that didn't take long. Only hours after the HTC One X+ was unveiled officially, we now know where U.S. consumers will have the chance to get it from. AT&T just announced that it will be the exclusive U.S. carrier to offer the HTC One X+ this fall."

There's a whole series of them apparently. The HTC one looks the best. 1080p quad core s4 5 inch screen (12.7cm) and 2gb ram. Very similar specs to the lg one, but it'll have sense themes in the customization center and perhaps other interesting features.

LG is not that good name over on xda, as the support and software was crap. But most off times the hardware in Lg phones is damn nice and new tech so with google behind and no locked crap it might be a intressting phone.

So you're saying for someone like me who buys phones to slap CyanogenMod on, I should expect poor results with the One X+? I will avoid then.
However, does sharing Tegra 3 with the Nexus 7 benefit the One series any? Did the One X get helped by the Nexus 7? I see this kinda like the SGS1 phones getting benefit from the Nexus S sharing SoC. The SGS2 is totally screwed as you know as it still lacks hwcomposer and stuff for CM10.
Yes I could get a Nexus, but sometimes I happen to like the design of non nexus phones more. The One X/X+ are truly sexy phones to me, and as long as they're decent to develop for I'd jump in.

This could be possible but we are never sure, either way getting something like CM booting is only half the work, the real test is getting wifi, Bluetooth, GPS etc working without HTC releasing anything. The only way to get them working is work arounds. If you are a flashaholic that likes roms that are not based off stock then stay away.
If you like Sense then by all means get it

Yes totally screwed. Sammy can kiss my ***

As someone who has an HTC flyer I must say, It saddens my to hear that HTC hardware isn't an option.
HTC has some aesthetically pleasing hardware and sense itself can be pretty nice. The tablet just feels great in your hands, and has a nice screen..
It absolutely sucks that HTC lets themselves get held back by poor sources.. I'm "ok" with my tablet not having the most up to date version constantly.. I didn't sign a contract for it.. but, I really don't want a phone that I'm locked into having for 2 years to be left out for no real good reason.
Still, I'd kill to see a smooth running JB rom that is factory quality on my flyer.
Thanks for the warning.

I have a Sensation and if it wasn't for CM this thing would have been in the garbage. I'm hoping to pick up one of these and I'm sure development work for it will eventually come around. It needs some time.

In order for me to purchase another device it has to be rooted with s off already accomplished. I love the mt4g way to much right now.
Nah, even if it was rooted. Even though the specs are a little bit better than the Sensation I'd still rather get the Sensation because all of the good devs already jumped to the Sensation.
I'd be surprised if a lot of devs went to the Amaze. Probably going to be a similar situation with the SGS4G when all of the devs were already on the Vibrant, no point in getting the SGS4G.
Good phone though, just wish that's what HTC did with the Sensation. The 1GB of RAM and better camera is nice.
Nope. The specs are all that. I'd need more to make me jump to a new phone.
ill prolly pick it up, but not when it first comes out. i love my phone but id like to have something with a little bigger screen and soft keys
The device just looks so damn good though. I'm thinking about it hard.

Specs isn't the only important thing....The G2X had good HW, but had some hw flaws like bleeding among other things.
Personally, this close to the launch of Ice Cream Sandwich, I'd be inclined to wait until HTC's first ICS phone. Or until CM8 has a stable release for a device of choice
I'm gonna wait for the nexus prime.

Steve still works with CM, it's just a separate project now, it may have less work from cyan himself. However you can't forget that CM has a large amount of devs, Cyan has help from others so I doubt they would actually allow CM brand to die off like this.
Well perhaps working at Sammy will give Steve a chance to make sure ICS reaches other their other phones quickly
Considering that CM just announced it would support 10 new Sony Ericsson devices, I take that as a sign that we won't see CM winding down anytime soon.

Since Steve works with Sammy now I'm thinking that he could be learning new or different tweaks, Sammy should have some sort of ICS access (Sammy should have it by now) depending on his job position; so maybe he can work on CM8 slightly earlier. Personally I'm not to thrilled about ICS, after seeing that NexusS w/ "ICS"....It looked nothing like I thought, I figured Google would step it up to fend off iOS5/WP7.5(Mango). But it doesn't seem like much of a UI overhaul, but I'm sure the usability/features have been significantly changed.
I've been sitting on an upgrade since last month so I'm going to use in on the Amaze, even though I was planning to use it on the Sensation.

Switching to T-Mobile, thinking about picking up the Amaze 4G

I have a NS4G, and am switching from Sprint so I'll need a new phone. I'm looking into either the Amaze 4G, Sensation, or Galaxy S II. I want a phone that has a good developer community, as the two previous phones I had were fairly active in that regard.
I saw that the Amaze 4G Dev forum is looking like all the roms are Sense based. Is this an temporary thing or is the dev support just not there? (Or is the phone locked down enough to make it difficult?)
Anyway I would greatly appreciate some I put on this!

Hello, I am new to the forum but do have the HTC Amaze 4G. While HTC does provide the tools for unlocking the bootloader, they do not allow for S-OFF (Security OFF). And it is because of this (for the most part) that developing for the HTC Amaze is limited ATM.

Temp - hopefully.
Dev support - we only have one developer that actually has the phone. To top it off he's only 16 and still in high school.
We have the source but not the entire kernel source (thanks to HTC and their technicalities)
Still don't have s-off so we can't flash kernels via recovery thus makes flashing roms that much more difficult.
So if you want a good phone to use as a daily driver and don't care about tweaking and boosting... this is the phone for you!
If you immediately want fully working ICS, Sense 3.5, CM9, AOSP, etc then go with another device.
Do we see this happening in the future? If more developers were to pickup the device then maybe. But not anytime soon.
Bottom line if you want a device that has a HUGE selection of roms that you can do pretty much anything with... this isn't the phone for you. Not yet anyway.
Anyone know if there's any word on whether S-Off is coming? I thought I heard HTC announcing the days of S-On being forced are over.
I'd rather get the better phone. Hope that dev support comes.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk
Agreed with Binary.
From what you've posted this doesn't sound like the phone that will suit you. However, in the long-run it could suit you better maybe?
I doubt this forum will ever pick up. Most people who wanted a phone like this bought the sensation, and this phone is not a big enough of an upgrade from that. So most will just wait till the next gen.
Thanks for the responses. I think I am going to go with the Amaze after all, and deal with Sense. Apparently it'll get ICS at some point regardless, which will be nice. I am pretty good with Linux so I might work on my own development if I get some free time (going back to college to finish up my bachelors degree so I'm not so sure about that part).

I definitely agree. Everyone that I know that bought this phone after having the Sensation ended up having buyers remorse. The phones seem very similiar to eachother and we all expected them to be pretty much the same. However we later found out that they are nothing alike on the inside. Different partitions, different software, different securities, etc. This phone is actually kind of a PITA for developers despite how HTC claims to be "developer friendly" and all that other nonsense.
If you stick with the Amaze then try beast, its pretty damn close to AOSP, or at least as close as we can have for now

This is the first phone where I had to use the htc unlocking method and am SHOCKED that is not as open as they made it out to be. Keeping s on? What the hell was the point then? I can see where it would benefit developers, but as far as supporting xda type communities, its an epic fail while giving us false hope in all those press releases how they "heard" the enthusiast community and wanted to be more open.

If he is actually wanting to work on the amaze I'd be glad to donate, mdeejay does great stuff used his stuff on the sensation. This is a dev I would love to get the device to if he is actually wanting to work on the amaze and own a device. Kinda sucks right now to get a device for someone at this moment with newer devices coming out it seems like most devs want to move on to those newer devices. It'd be awesome to have a dev who would actually want to own and use an amaze. Back when I was on the galaxy s2 forum they got Eugene373 a phone and because he was gonna use it as his phone he ended up bringing them so much great roms. To throw a device into a devs hands who is just willing to work on a couple roms for us, is kind of a shakey idea on one side its great and appreciated that they wanna help the amaze community out on the other hand they got lives and their preferred devices so you never know how long they will be willing to help out for.

I would argue the quoted part above - our device still isn't even remotely obsolete. I was at a tmobile yesterday with a guy who works there who owned an amaze previously, but they gave him a htc one.. he isn't impressed. It is slimmer, and it includes beats - but otherwise it is the same phone without being able to access battery or have a microSD.
Sure, the international version is quad-core, but the newest phones in the US haven't made any attempt at pushing hardware specs-- we are still good competition.
There are a ton of devs that are still developing for devices that are definitely inferior to ours spec wise, that alone is a very big factor.. if they use our phone, they will fall in love(or they have bad taste!)

Well I partially agree with you, its not so much that the amaze is a bad device, its not behind the curve nor is it stale, however, the newer devices are easier to dev for from looking at the one s and one x even with no kernel source they are farther along. I love the amaze and I don't see anything compelling enough to upgrade to anytime soon. With that being said the amaze is no walk in the park to dev for, with missing drivers its already a not so easy phone to deal with, I truly hope if mdeejay or any developer that gets our device for that matter likes it the way owners of it do so that they can see a reason to get it beyond just helping us.

Htc ONE Google edition?

After Sammy announced the S4 is coming out with the "vanilla" experience, the rumor mill started going crazy expecting htc to do the same, specially after one of their execs teweeted "wait".
Those rumors where quickly scuashed when another high up in the company tweeted that no htc was not planing a "vanilla" edition... However now the same guy (geek.com) that leaked that sammy was coming out with their has said that indeed htc is coming out with one as well.
So what do you guys think? And the big question would be, if they do come out with it, would we (T-mobile) guys be able to port it over and get OTA's directly from Google?
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
Exactly what I came to this forum for. If they do release it, can I port it over to my T-Mobile HTC One.
Since the only device announced at I/O was the S4 vanilla edition, I decided waiting around for a Nexus wasn't worthy it. I have the Galaxy Nexus, but I never liked the plastic feel of it and the S4 feels the same way, just with way better specs.
I've always liked HTC devices going back to the Windows Mobile days.

Yeah, I worry about Google's direction to slap AOSP on pre-existing devices (S4/One so far). Sure they don't need to design, engineer and product their own phone (Nexus 4) so from an infrastructure standpoint it makes sense. But once you start porting AOSP to multiple models, it will inevitably slow software releases because Google will have to ensure compatibility with varying hardware. Also, features will be missing that will make people upset (custom camera software, beats, multi-screen, etc).
Sure they will run pure AOSP, but at what cost (feature-wise)? That has me concerned.
Unless HTC/Sammy/Moto? release their highly configured software apps (camera, etc) independently, the AOSP experience on these currently produced devices will leave a lot to be desired, IMO.

Then don't buy one. More options are always better. IMO
I miss AOSP, but for once I feel there's features on the Sense ROM I don't want to give up. I think they did a really good job and for once I'm not pulling my hair out and needing to root the phone. (That's saying something!)

It's a reality guys... Really hope that devs can port this for us Tmobile users...

Same goes for me. I could live without the gallery (although nice), beats (there are plenty of EQ apps out there), blink feed, and many others. the one piece i could not go without is the camera software! Sequence shot alone is stellar, and some of the other zoe features are great as well.
That said i am keeping my fingers crossed that the fine devs here will be able to port the camera software to the stock rom when it hits. If that happens this phone would be absolutely perfect in my eyes!

Yes, especially since the announcement did not say it would have TMO radios. I think this is basically an ATT device, similar to the 32 Gb unlocked version.
We may not have to port....

Zoe isn't on by default.
However, I found some pretty good uses for it. It's better than using the "action" shot setting. It's literally like taking freeze frames from high definition video. I've finally been able to get decent pictures of my dog. It's hard to get her to stand still.
The camera was the main reason that I stayed on stock but the aokp camera is actually really good

HTC Is "Exploring" How They Can Update Our Devices To 4.4

I was searching the internet when I came across this on Reddit. Should we look forward to seeing Official kitkat on our devices or just turn our head away from now? What are your opinions?
"To address an issue that’s top of mind for many folks here, we recently announced that we wouldn’t be updating the HTC One X and One X+ beyond Android 4.2. Without the support of our chip manufacturer Nvidia, it made a global update of One X and X+ devices impossible. However, in US the One X uses the Qualcomm chip and an upgrade would be possible, but we didn’t think it would be a good experience for our customer base to update the X, but not the X+. This update caused a huge stir amongst owners and we’ve heard you loud and clear, so we’re now actively exploring how we can make the jump to 4.4."

If they decide to selectively update the Qualcomm versions of One X (the AT&T one and probably the One XL) they'd only create even more disappointment and rage amongst users. Sure, the ones getting the update will be happy.
And about the X+, none of the devices would get the update, because all versions of the X+ use the Nvidia chipset.
Tegra 3
What I don't get is that how can we still have Android 4.3/4.4 roms for the One X+ yet HTC says they can't develop roms because Nvidia no longer supports this chipset.
The main issue is the kernel and drivers . in most cases these have been back ported from 4.3 so although they work its not optimum

Wow they seem really unorganized, posting two opposite statements both concerning the same topic at almost the same time..

They didnt teh statement read

So they never said the Nvidia powered devices where being looked at. If we want updates we should be pestering Nvidia to continue tegra3 support
As far as I understood it they meant that an update to 4.3 would only be possible on the OneX, that's why the try to find a way to update to 4.4 on both devices.
Otherwise it would be pointless to say that they don't want to update the OneX, but still wanting to find a way to update to KitKat..

Lets's see if HTC will suprise us in a positve way.
It only concerns the Qualcomm version of the One X. The HOX+ will not be updated, the Tegra 3 variant is not supported by Nvidia. And of course, HTC did not think to pressure them to offer support, so...
Why are people getting angry about the phone being discontinued? A new update could mean a new HBOOT and new touch firmware a patches for things that we have exploited for our ROMS. Look at the 3.18 update.

Drippler has a article now that seems to state HTC is reconsidering to update to kitkat for one x and one x+.
One other gem from this AMA, which will have HTC One X and One X+ owners very happy, is that HTC is now reconsidering updating these phones to Android KitKat. This is a pretty big backflip considering HTC came out and officially said that the phone would not be supported past Android 4.2.2, but I think we can all agree this change a good thing.

HTC's rep and sales has gone sideways, so in my opinion, well.... Pretty much said.

Exactly. I see that the update thing went during the reddit session many times. I think they realize we are unhappy with this decision and maybe they will try to talk with nvidia about that.
Sweet dreams.

Its the same source as the rest of the news so i think its just taken out of context. My reading of what was said is its just the Qualcomm handsets that are being revisited as nvidia have dropped open support for the tegra3

Yes, only the US (Qualcomm) version of the One X is being investigated for an update.
And if you look through the comments, you will see that HTC responded loud and clear:
"For the HTC One X in the US (diff chipset than global version), we’re now actively exploring how we can make the jump to 4.4."
HERE is the link for this.

From my knowledge, we didn't exploit anything as per say. With the new HBoot you just have to unlock the bootloader which is a service provided by HTC itself and flash a recovery which is a job for our devs which shouldn't take a while to find a solution to. What you said would be an issue if it was S-Offed or close to an S-Off so the update might cause a threat to that exploit but seeing as this didn't happen/not close to happening I dont think thats a problem.
I honestly am not in a hurry to get a new phone since I know that my HOX+ is good for me, however I would be quite happy if we can have access to sense 5.5 with the kitkat features. I like blinkfeed and with the options found on the One I think i will love it more.
YAY! Guess what I just bought?!
Not really bothered about not getting a KitKat update even though it would be nice, because I don't want it being bogged down by sense.
I'll have a look at what's available homebrewed on here and continually moan about it on Elevate
