HTC Is "Exploring" How They Can Update Our Devices To 4.4 - HTC One X+

I was searching the internet when I came across this on Reddit. Should we look forward to seeing Official kitkat on our devices or just turn our head away from now? What are your opinions?
"To address an issue that’s top of mind for many folks here, we recently announced that we wouldn’t be updating the HTC One X and One X+ beyond Android 4.2. Without the support of our chip manufacturer Nvidia, it made a global update of One X and X+ devices impossible. However, in US the One X uses the Qualcomm chip and an upgrade would be possible, but we didn’t think it would be a good experience for our customer base to update the X, but not the X+. This update caused a huge stir amongst owners and we’ve heard you loud and clear, so we’re now actively exploring how we can make the jump to 4.4."
Source http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/1xxjfx/hi_were_the_htc_usa_product_team_amaa/

If they decide to selectively update the Qualcomm versions of One X (the AT&T one and probably the One XL) they'd only create even more disappointment and rage amongst users. Sure, the ones getting the update will be happy.
And about the X+, none of the devices would get the update, because all versions of the X+ use the Nvidia chipset.

Tegra 3
What I don't get is that how can we still have Android 4.3/4.4 roms for the One X+ yet HTC says they can't develop roms because Nvidia no longer supports this chipset.

The main issue is the kernel and drivers . in most cases these have been back ported from 4.3 so although they work its not optimum

So they never said the Nvidia powered devices where being looked at. If we want updates we should be pestering Nvidia to continue tegra3 support

As far as I understood it they meant that an update to 4.3 would only be possible on the OneX, that's why the try to find a way to update to 4.4 on both devices.
Otherwise it would be pointless to say that they don't want to update the OneX, but still wanting to find a way to update to KitKat..

Lets's see if HTC will suprise us in a positve way.

It only concerns the Qualcomm version of the One X. The HOX+ will not be updated, the Tegra 3 variant is not supported by Nvidia. And of course, HTC did not think to pressure them to offer support, so...

Why are people getting angry about the phone being discontinued? A new update could mean a new HBOOT and new touch firmware a patches for things that we have exploited for our ROMS. Look at the 3.18 update.

Drippler has a article now that seems to state HTC is reconsidering to update to kitkat for one x and one x+.
One other gem from this AMA, which will have HTC One X and One X+ owners very happy, is that HTC is now reconsidering updating these phones to Android KitKat. This is a pretty big backflip considering HTC came out and officially said that the phone would not be supported past Android 4.2.2, but I think we can all agree this change a good thing.

Exactly. I see that the update thing went during the reddit session many times. I think they realize we are unhappy with this decision and maybe they will try to talk with nvidia about that.
Sweet dreams.

Its the same source as the rest of the news so i think its just taken out of context. My reading of what was said is its just the Qualcomm handsets that are being revisited as nvidia have dropped open support for the tegra3

Yes, only the US (Qualcomm) version of the One X is being investigated for an update.
And if you look through the comments, you will see that HTC responded loud and clear:
"For the HTC One X in the US (diff chipset than global version), we’re now actively exploring how we can make the jump to 4.4."
HERE is the link for this.

From my knowledge, we didn't exploit anything as per say. With the new HBoot you just have to unlock the bootloader which is a service provided by HTC itself and flash a recovery which is a job for our devs which shouldn't take a while to find a solution to. What you said would be an issue if it was S-Offed or close to an S-Off so the update might cause a threat to that exploit but seeing as this didn't happen/not close to happening I dont think thats a problem.
I honestly am not in a hurry to get a new phone since I know that my HOX+ is good for me, however I would be quite happy if we can have access to sense 5.5 with the kitkat features. I like blinkfeed and with the options found on the One I think i will love it more.

YAY! Guess what I just bought?!
Not really bothered about not getting a KitKat update even though it would be nice, because I don't want it being bogged down by sense.

As for ICS, eventually, but seeing as how the view only just got HC 3 months ago I wouldn't count on any official (HTC) builds hitting us until the end of the year IMO. If i'm wrong, i'm wrong.

Wow just reading the blog, so many people are asking about flyer and HTC decided not to include in the ICS roll out.... Fully capable and able device like View/Flyer should be getting it first, I bet they cant integrate the scribe in to it or its taking them a very long time to do it and this is why they are not putting it forward.... This really is a sad day for us HTC flyer/view users
I have faith in God, everyone else must pay up front. LOL
I ve contacted HTC support and confirmed thats there is no scheduled update since now. I think that means we will never see any update for Flyer. HC turned out very buggy I cant even make skype calls, music sounds strage in high volume, flash player plays only via explorer and nowhere else eg fb, and many others. I ve just downgrade to GB and my Flyer is usable again with no bugs till now. ps I ve asked support how to downgrade and they anwered that I just cant. My opinion is that there will be no update even for bugs HTC just dont care for HTC Flyer anymore they consider it as a dropped project.

HTC One X+ a pain to Dev for.

HTC does a really bad job with sources, some of us already know that.
Some things you might want to know
1- the One X+ Can not flash a custom rom with its boot loader locked, unless of course there an S OFF method, but that's a low possibility. In other words HTC in some cases takes its time to release a boot loader unlock method. Usually they do a good job with this. What they suck at is giving Kernel sources. We won't see a custom kernel until December if the device was released in October
2- Its hard to do ports based of sense, so development could go for the worst with very little to no source and playing around with sense is not really a walk in the park
The one x+ looks like a good device. Hopefully T Mobile picks it up over here in the US soon.
Just giving a heads up.
As previous One X great Devs found a way to move on development, sure X+ will have a lot of dev!
It's not a big improvement against the One X (international) though, but after the new Nexus will be a LG, I will maybe even buy this device as my next phone and will do some stuff for it..

So you're saying for someone like me who buys phones to slap CyanogenMod on, I should expect poor results with the One X+? I will avoid then.
However, does sharing Tegra 3 with the Nexus 7 benefit the One series any? Did the One X get helped by the Nexus 7? I see this kinda like the SGS1 phones getting benefit from the Nexus S sharing SoC. The SGS2 is totally screwed as you know as it still lacks hwcomposer and stuff for CM10.
Yes I could get a Nexus, but sometimes I happen to like the design of non nexus phones more. The One X/X+ are truly sexy phones to me, and as long as they're decent to develop for I'd jump in.

This could be possible but we are never sure, either way getting something like CM booting is only half the work, the real test is getting wifi, Bluetooth, GPS etc working without HTC releasing anything. The only way to get them working is work arounds. If you are a flashaholic that likes roms that are not based off stock then stay away.
If you like Sense then by all means get it

As someone who has an HTC flyer I must say, It saddens my to hear that HTC hardware isn't an option.
HTC has some aesthetically pleasing hardware and sense itself can be pretty nice. The tablet just feels great in your hands, and has a nice screen..
It absolutely sucks that HTC lets themselves get held back by poor sources.. I'm "ok" with my tablet not having the most up to date version constantly.. I didn't sign a contract for it.. but, I really don't want a phone that I'm locked into having for 2 years to be left out for no real good reason.
Still, I'd kill to see a smooth running JB rom that is factory quality on my flyer.
Thanks for the warning.
I have a Sensation and if it wasn't for CM this thing would have been in the garbage. I'm hoping to pick up one of these and I'm sure development work for it will eventually come around. It needs some time.

Htc ONE Google edition?

After Sammy announced the S4 is coming out with the "vanilla" experience, the rumor mill started going crazy expecting htc to do the same, specially after one of their execs teweeted "wait".
Those rumors where quickly scuashed when another high up in the company tweeted that no htc was not planing a "vanilla" edition... However now the same guy (geek.com) that leaked that sammy was coming out with their has said that indeed htc is coming out with one as well.
So what do you guys think? And the big question would be, if they do come out with it, would we (T-mobile) guys be able to port it over and get OTA's directly from Google?

Exactly what I came to this forum for. If they do release it, can I port it over to my T-Mobile HTC One.
Since the only device announced at I/O was the S4 vanilla edition, I decided waiting around for a Nexus wasn't worthy it. I have the Galaxy Nexus, but I never liked the plastic feel of it and the S4 feels the same way, just with way better specs.
I've always liked HTC devices going back to the Windows Mobile days.

Yeah, I worry about Google's direction to slap AOSP on pre-existing devices (S4/One so far). Sure they don't need to design, engineer and product their own phone (Nexus 4) so from an infrastructure standpoint it makes sense. But once you start porting AOSP to multiple models, it will inevitably slow software releases because Google will have to ensure compatibility with varying hardware. Also, features will be missing that will make people upset (custom camera software, beats, multi-screen, etc).
Sure they will run pure AOSP, but at what cost (feature-wise)? That has me concerned.
Unless HTC/Sammy/Moto? release their highly configured software apps (camera, etc) independently, the AOSP experience on these currently produced devices will leave a lot to be desired, IMO.

Same goes for me. I could live without the gallery (although nice), beats (there are plenty of EQ apps out there), blink feed, and many others. the one piece i could not go without is the camera software! Sequence shot alone is stellar, and some of the other zoe features are great as well.
That said i am keeping my fingers crossed that the fine devs here will be able to port the camera software to the stock rom when it hits. If that happens this phone would be absolutely perfect in my eyes!

However, I found some pretty good uses for it. It's better than using the "action" shot setting. It's literally like taking freeze frames from high definition video. I've finally been able to get decent pictures of my dog. It's hard to get her to stand still.

ive had this phone since december and ive been following it...just recently flashed the viper rom and am pretty happy with the performance. As for AOSP and such development, it got pretty close before the dev had to abandon the device because it was taking too much of his time. hopefully the dev he sent the phone to can figure it all out soon, and hopefully if we get the Sense 5, 4.2.2 update it will help!
I bought this phone after "Exploring" the Windows Lumina phones. And STILL bought a Nexus 4 because of the development. I agree, hopefully there will be a Dev who will show mercy on us AT&T customers and port Sense 5 and 4.2. to our beloved and much hated AT&T HTC One X+ . Twitter user Llab TooFeR (@LlabTooFeR) got tech fans speculating on the prospects for HTC devices after tweeting: "2012 devices won't get it...only butterfly/droid dna might 4.4..."
According to Llab TooFer, that means HTC One X, HTC One X+ and HTC One S won't be able to get the Android 4.4 KitKat update.
HTC hasn't given any official word about it ,JB required high amt of ram to run, google says that 4.4 is built in such a way that it can be feeded into phones which have low ram. What do you think about this?

Only if nvidia updates a base for tegra3/hox. Which is doubtful.

With this logic, we should at least get a 4.3 update. But I doubt HTC will even give us that.

Nobody knows how they act and what they will release... Look at Kernel Stuff e.g.
If they won´t release newer sources for kitkat and next sense, they will hopefully give devs the necessary driver for AOSP ROMS !
4.2 has started rolling out for HOX/HOX+ , Samsung is skipping 4.2 update for s3 and note 2 and these devices will directly receive 4.3 update, Might be the same case with hox devices? As 4.2 has rolled out, they might skip 4.3 and directly launch 4.4 as it has low ram requirements too.
What you guys say?

That is a way how companies should act ...
So that means for me Nexus or models which supports the developing
No, Talking about Intl. Model, Ofcourse ONE will go 4.4 as its their current flapship. they should do 4.4 for one series as HTC has less no. of Top Notch cellphones in the market compared to samsung, So Sammy wont pay attention to all of its devices. Whereas HTC has handful, After ONE, its Its HOX/HOX+ and the remain one series. Thats what i am saying :fingers-crossed:

4.4? You have to be freaking joking. Half of us (including everybody in CID 044 Southeast Asia) still don't even have 4.2.2, close to seven weeks after it first started rolling out.
There is zero chance HTC will give any of us 4.4. And it has nothing with inability to run it; it's because they couldn't give a flying hoot, even about their supposed flagship devices.
If you buy from HTC, you're a sucker. I won't be doing so again.

4.2 might be the last update for HOX/HOX+.
We WONT be getting kitkat the X+ is end of life

Honestly, I believe that 4.4 will be the end of the road for us. I believe that they will give out 4.4 by the summer of 2014 and skip 4.3 entirely.
However as for Hox and Hox+ sense 5 and 4.2.2 , it's been released for a month now and if you hadnt received it you should quite soon, so don't give up.
The reason for my speculation. Is that HTC announced that they will try to satisfy their old customers and roll out updates for older devices. And the one x+ isn't that old yet.
Hopefully we will get it

In a couple of days, it will have been seven weeks since 4.2.2 first came out for some CIDs. That's nearly two months, not a month.
You know you are not getting 4.4 when it comes from Lloir. But maybe someone can make Rom carrying sense 6 with 4.4? Come on guys lets not give up. X+ is a beast phone, and it's worth developing.
I am still learning programming (java) and so forth and so on but once I could I will work on the development of this phone.
As for the previous post for my CID I got the update around the 22nd of august which is a month, but it wasnt meant to be accurate. Well if we aren't getting 4.4 I think we will get 4.3 atleast ?

We won't get it, as we need new tegra 3 drivers and if you haven't noticed nvidia have moved onto tegra 4
Sent from my One X+ using Tapatalk 4
Ooooh good! The read of the night "OS update and the relation to the Processors" , a bit of an off-topic question, but the drivers of Tegra 3 that you are all talking about means that the Android SDK is updated by the processor drivers?

Tegra is not only the CPU, its the chip set in the device, also nvidia need to update the kernel or provide HTC the drivers to get a newer android to work on the device. Which they won't support as I said tegra4 is released so little point to them to support it
Sent from my One X+ using Tapatalk 4
But then again, the 2012 Nexus 7 is a Tegra 3 device and I doubt Google won't push and insist for 4.4 on it.
So I guess Nvidia will support Tegra 3, and it would be up to HTC to decide whether to update the HOX(+) or not.
