I have an RMA to send my unit back to Asus and before I do I would like to get a general idea of GPS functionality over a broader user group. If I think that I can get one with usable GPS I will do the RMA.. Thanks.

You will never get one with GPS that functions *well*. They made the GPS kit to "fix" the GPS problem, but I dont think you can order it any more. You might look around on here to see if someone is selling/giving theirs away.
tl;dr; I wouldn't count on getting one where GPS functions like you want.
I just received a gps kit from Asus even though the offer is expired and my tablet was purchased as a refurb 2 weeks ago all I did was sign up for one and 4 days later it was at my door completely free of charge. Follow the steps here event.asus.com/ASUSPad/TF201GPS/ hopefully they send one out to you as well.
I have the dongle as well, but it doesn't really get a GPS lock with it. I wonder if the further north you are the harder it is for reception?

The answer for me has allway been simple, use a bluetooth gps device. They are small, cheap and vastly more efficient than any built in GPS whatever tablet you have. You can place it in an optimum place, be it your pocket or the corner under the windscreen and you can still charge your Prime. It updates my position faster than my wife's Tomtom. The downside is wifi is compromised by the bluetooth but since I never use wifi while on the move, it makes no difference to me.

Why would that matter? anyway, i get a lock that's adequate for Google Earth and Flightradar24, that's good enough for me:good:

I bought mine earlier in the year and got the dongle. It's pretty good in terms of reception, at least in my area (south Israel): I got more locks with it than I had with my cellphones before. That said, the device itself is quite a nightmare to operate: you attach it to the bottom part of the tablet and it completely obstructs the docking port, giving you no way to charge the tablet until it's removed. Of course if you have a case/enclosure for your tablet, taking it out constantly is very inconvenient, making things even more annoying, but from what I can see, it does give you GPS...
As for the built-in GPS - it receives absolutely nothing. For people who hope to get at least one unusable satellite in an open field on a clear day: forget about it! I tried to get into the open as much as I could and there was zero reception everywhere. Short of taking a Shuttle right next to that GPS satellite or modding your expensive tablet with antenna strips made out of tin foil or something (which I saw a person on YouTube do), you won't be receiving anything at any time through the built-in GPS module...
TF201 GPS Remedy
If you're still having GPS problems with your TF201 and have root access, download TF201_External_GPS.zip and flash it in recovery or with GooManager, etc. My GPS was dead with or without the dongle, and after flashing that file the GPS reception in my TF201 is just as good as it is in my Samsung Galaxy S2 phone. There is a TF201-GPSTweaks.zip that you can try as well, but I didn't notice a difference with that.

I ordered the GPS dongle last week from their site in received it today but I also bought the prime 3 weeks agoeither way GPS works the same with or without it for me
I haven't rooted yet but I will be, do you have a download link for TF201_External_GPS.zip..

I just buy bluetooth gps reciever 'CoPiloT' about GBP 15, it work very well . I can use SYGIC NAVIGATION so smooth .

Well, you're trading one problem for another, WiFi will vanish with Bluetooth on.

If your tethering your tablet via BT to a GPS unit, why would you care if WiFi was off or on? If your even doing this, it is obvious your out traveling and thus, WiFi is of no use so... it is a mute point

And sometimes, you want to use... the Internet.
Glad I don't really care about GPS on a tablet or even a laptop. Both my cars have navigation systems so I'm good on that

I'm not saying its ideal. Obviously having a dedicated working gps in the tab is better. I'm just saying if you have a smart phone, instead of buying a bluetooth gps and jumping through hoops and all, might as well just use tether gps and use your phone's.

Situation 1: You're home using your wifi and you need Blutooth GPS.
Solution: Dude, if you need to know where you are at home, there is a bigger issue.
Situation 2: You're driving down the road and you need Blutooth GPS.
Solution: Turn it on, there's no Wifi anyways
Situation 3: You're driving down the road, you need GPS, but someone is using the Prime in the passenger seat connected to a wifi hotspot from a phone right next to you.
Solution: First, it probably won't drop in that close proximity. Second, how often is this situation going to happen? For six sigma the population, this will happen less than once.
Situation 4: You're in a coffee shop on wifi and need GPS.
Solution: Disconnect Wifi, do your GPS location, reconnect Wifi.
Alternate Solution: Use the wifi location tracking.
So really, there is no issue here. Unless you have one I'm not thinking of.

Oh, I agree. If you have a smartphone, might as well use the phone for GPS. Tether-GPS isn't that fast.
I PERSONALLY will never use GPS with my tablet though. There's a reason why GPS devices don't have 10" screen ;P
Just so we are clear, I am by no means in NEED of GPS on my tablet, as I have a droid bionic.
This workaround is for my wife to use while I am driving. We go on a lot of road trips, and she constantly complains about screen size of the droid.
I agree with people in the sense that GPS is not needed on the tablet, and it is not feasible to be driving around by yourself using the tablet for GPS.
I think you will find that tethering a bt GPS might be a pain. Back in the day I managed it with my old dell axim but drivers will be an issue on android.
There can be use for GPS in a tablet with cached or offline maps though. I actually hold on to our htc-hd2 because of the great GPS with offline maps under wm6.x. we use it all the time...but I prefer the pocketabilty of that system for GPS navigation.
I have little use for GPS on a tablet...but I am a little annoyed as I was with my vibrant that GPS is not working as advertised on the prime.

SO after all the people worrying me I got mine today from Game Stop. Opened it up, rooted it, installed root keeper, upgraded to ICS and upgraded the camera. Wifi works fantastic at my work so far, and GPS locked me on me as soon as I upgraded Google Maps. It wasn't 100% perfect but it was accurate upto 20 meters.
I know this isnt a blog site, I just wanted to give some positive feedback after reading all of these nightmares forever.
Also, I am using wifi and my bluetooth mouse with no problems either.
Now we just need some love from ASUS so we can get some custom ROMs/Kernels

I do NOT want to be the one to rain on anybody's parade and insist that someone shouldn't love the product they just bought. Hell, I love my Prime as well, although I'm still debating whether to return the one I have with broken haptic feedback in hopes of finally getting one where at least every major component just functions at all.
That said, we do need to keep the issues clear that actually do exist. So:
1. If you have GPS completely turned off, Google Maps will still locate you to 20 meters via wifi-based location services. In fact, you might find that your GPS actually is turned off by default (I can't remember whether mine was on or off out of the box and following the ICS update). However, locking to 20 meters accuracy when connected to wifi has pretty much nothing to do with working or non-working GPS.
2. If you have another Bluetooth device to try other than a mouse, it would be interesting to see if you can stream more data (say, a BT headphone and streaming audio) and retain full wifi performance at the same time.

Just to worry you some more:
Make sure you are streaming audio to a bluetooth from a video or something online. YOu want to make sure your BlueTooth is actually streaming something, and not simply turned on.
Check the edges of your screen. Make sure your screen is not lifting away from the back. This may or may not be a problem for your, but for my prime and some others, the glass appears to be raised above the Back Panel and can basically be pushed flush against it.
I love my prime, I love it. Except, I cannot update it cause I have no Serial Number. Even with my screen a little raised, and some light bleed on the right hand side, I would keep it if I could update the firmware. But I cannot, and have to take it back.

Google maps locks on for me at 20 meters accuracy. Although when I try Google Nav. No such luck. Glad yours is near perfect

Everything is nice on my Prime. The one thing I noticed on the native video player when playing mkv files. I would get these lines outside the playing video. But if played from a third party player like mx player I have no problems.

Mine is almost perfect save for a spec of dust under the LCD which causes a small greyish dark shadow on white/bright backgrounds...Problem is best buy where i bought it from is out of stock...and with the unknown serial number problem seemingly becoming more commonplace...i dont want to risk replacing this one that works perfect and has one small imperfection...and getting one thats unrootable and unupgradeable...im thinking i will just keep this one and RMA it later on if need be when the bugs and issues have been worked out down the line after all the tab is covered by a 1 year warranty with Asus.

I am not the OP...but ran this test with 20 minutes of streaming video from YouTube and Netflix without issues. I think some people got a bad bad batch.

What Bluetooth device were you streaming to; presumably it was audio? While you were streaming to Bluetooth, did you do any SpeedTest runs? Would be interesting to see if you were able to maintain full Internet connectivity over wifi while streaming to Bluetooth...
my replacement ATP should be in today or tomorrow..i hope so.
They have one from a preorder that never picked up and the manager and I both agreed that it would be better not to open up one from the same "batch" but try fresh with this new batch..regardless if the units being released now are the same as before...(i doubt this from a production/shipping standpoint..otherwise if no new units were created...why the massive shortage upon release?)

Glad to see you have yours....I love mine other than what others are facing...screen separation, no GPS(none), WiFi is intermittently crappy...BT issue is intermittent..and something i haven't seen anyone talk about..i have a dead-zone right where the WLAN module seems to be. I've used both the developer screen visualizer and Multitouch Visualizer and have posted the video's confirming it "Skips" at the exact same spot and ONLY that spot.
Being an original transformer owner....I am in love with this one! IMO It is working great right out of the box smooth as butter.... I really don't know whats up with all these post about ICS being buggy,laggy,crashing.....?? This tablet is going to sell because its nice,fast,the screen is amazing and it's beat every other company off the line with cutting edge software & hardware... I'm not saying its perfect but it sure works for me.

My first Prime I got from GS non tablet store. I was able to return it within the 30 day policy. I just explained about the GPS and random shutdowns and that was that got my money back and now have my replacement from OD. I'm happy and rooted! Can't wait for the unlock bootloader tool.

I experiend this problem with my Prime too. I used GPS Test, w/ or w/o wifi indoor and I get not signal.
Yeah I did too, took it back got another one with mediocre GPS which pretty much is the best you can get. The perfect working prime does not exist, some people will say they have it but they will also say they don't care about GPS. lol

you probably have a terrible connection to the gps antenna. my bet is if you go for a drive and point your TFP out the window for 10 mins you might pick up five sats with bad SNR. exchange it!

Yeah... there is a billion threads on this forum about GPS problems. Mine is non-existent as well.
I was told that it worked for some people before the firmware / ICS upgrade. But if you are looking for GPS, I would highly recommend you take the Prime back and get something else... because Asus pretty much removed that feature off the spec sheet and stated that "it's not designed to be a professional GPS device"
I am on my 3rd prime before I could see any satellites with mine. Here is a video of one working and one not working.
My GPS worked one time, one night. It never worked before or since. So yes, my WiFi is basically dead on arrival and is completely useless and non functioning.
I finally decide to return mine for a fix, Asus sent me the RMA infomation.
I am kinda disappointed in Asus tranformer prime I have been waiting for it more than a year, else I could have iPad 2.
my case: the GPS work out for the couple of first time OUTdoor only. Then after I update to ICS, GPS was stopped working on both w/ or w/o WIFI, outdoor or indoor.
I also the Wifi was having some issues too, the signal was always week, the further you get from the access point, it is likely you want have wifi...where my iPhonw 4 is working at the same distance....

Wow, interesting. When you consider the Prime's only been out a little over a month so h/w should be the same and they're all running the same s/w there shouldn't be huge differences between them. Out of curiousity, do they perform differently with Wi-Fi also?

I have had good wifi on all three. Using speed test app on both my phone and the prime, they both pulled almost identical speeds all over my house. The first one had the serial # unkown issue, gps not working at all and screen bleed. The second one also had screen bleed and no gps found. The third one is a keeper, so far everything works out great. It sucks that I got used to the other 2 primes, customized it and then had to return it. But now, since I have a keeper, I am really going to customize the hell out of it lol.
A lot of the wifi problems I had when I first got the Prime eroded away. Mainly it was Wifi and Bluetooth pair problems, but after nearly a month with the Prime I find that I've been Bluetooth pairing and viewing Hulu+ (hacked) / Netflix without issues.
My GPS isn't prefect, but it works enough where I'm not planning to RMA (or return my Prime) because of it.

Just received a new Prime today, serial is C3, I have not had time to do any extensive testing but I am pissed off to find dead pixels and white pixels so I guess ill be returning the unit until I get one with no damn spot on it, the lightbleeding the GPS doesnt bother me but dammit the dots are irritating!
I do not know if anyone else has a C3 model yet so before I return it in a few days please feel free to ask me any questions to compare it with the other models.

Well in never had any real problems with it with my last unit but its fine right now no dropping or whatever.
Am gonna try go outside and see how far the signal can go and the strength and so on.

I did not know there were different models. I got mine few days ago and it's C3.
I see that most people complain about wifi - it works fine for me, it has better range than my Galaxy S.
It has newest firmware in - dated 20-Feb I think. It rebooted itself twice for no reason, but apart from that everything works smoothly.

I'm happy with my prime purely for the fact that i got sick and tired of waiting for a decently powered android tablet, and the prime fits the bill in practically all areas apart from the for mentioned problems already discussed i.e. gps, wifi, wifi + bluetooth etc etc.........

-This was always a preference for me as i don't like leaving on my wifi for extended periods of time, just gotta wait till someone figures out how to hook the adapter to the tablet directly.
Saying that i like the fact that when i need wifi, i can log onto my router using the prime and turn it on and then remove the tablet from the dock, then, when im finished with the wifi, i turn it off, dock the tablet, and let it connect over ethernet automatically.....very nice

I got my C3 a couple of days ago. Other than the GPS that I knew was not going to work very well inside, if at all, its been working fine. It does work good outside though. Wifi is as good as any other devices I have on my network and range is the same as other devices. I haven't however tested it while using Bluetooth at the same time since I don't really use it that way.
As far as the screen I have no dead pixels and only the slightest light bleed at the top just below the camera. I didn't even notice it until I used the app for checking the screen for dead pixels. It is so small that I not sure I want to return it for another because like I said I don't even see under normal use.
I must say I was a little apprehensive about buying it because of all the threads here with some of the problems some of these have. Add in the fact there were none anywhere near me that I could play with first hand to see if I even would like the little thing it was a big leap of blind faith for me. But it was also the threads with the many happy would buy it again owners that conived me to go ahead buy it and I'm glad I did.
In short I'm happy with it. A buddy and I compared his new iPad(3) with my TP and the first words out of his mouth was WOW that is nice. There was also another iPad2 owner next to me and he was impressed with it too. This was in a place that has always had crappy wifi and I still managed to latch on to it.
I even applied my first hack to it yesterday the black hack for Notifications which really looks nice I think.

Install "Bluetooth GPS" on your Prime, and enable the "Allow Mock Locations" Setting.
Install "GPS 2 Bluetooth" on your phone.
Pair your prime and phone via Bluetooth
Enable GPS and Bluetooth on your phone, and put the GPS 2 Bluetooth widget on a homescreen. Tap the widget to turn it on.
Enable Bluetooth on your prime, and open Bluetooth GPS and connect to your phone in the app (This app also has a widget to turn it on and off at a single click).
Voila!

How is WiFi+Bluetooth working together, headset, speakers, streaming..?
C3 should have all the updates for hw that solve the isse, I hope.

Already tried that, managed to get it connected and everything, but when i open google maps and click my location, nada............i just assumed that apps werent set up to use an external gps source!!
am i right in thinking that yours does work in google maps?

Mine works fine, yes. Perhaps you need to disable gps on the Prime. Maybe it's getting confused?
I've also used "bluetooth gps mouse" (do a market search, there's a free version to see if it works for you) on the prime and an app called Bluetooth GPS Output on the phone. Maybe just need a different combination of software to get it working?
Oh, also, you need to enable the "Enable Mock GPS Provider" setting in Bluetooth GPS on the Prime. Otherwise it won't work at all.

I'm started this thread because it seems there are a lot of TF201 owners, like me, who feel that the GPS fix is good, but a WIFI fix would be better. Hopefully we can keep the feet to the fire and get some improvements here too.
My WIFI works very well in a 20 foot radius around the router. But step outside that bubble and it drops off significantly. I will need to buy a new access point to have good connectivity in the kitchen. That sucks.
Apparently the C3+ serial numbers are better, here's hoping. I've stayed positive about ASUS and the TF201 since December. Please ASUS, fix the WIFI, not the GPS.

Fair enough. But that thread is about general product updates, this is specifically addressing the issue that WIFI is more important than GPS.
Typical 21st century human behavior thx for an almost perfect product but we need MORE!
Not flaming just trashing around. Wifi is more important than GPS. Are wifi repeater that expensive? I'd just go ahead and buy one if that solve all your problems ^^
In my case wifi is good enough. Meaning its similar to my other devices like my phone. It could always be better but i think its as good as it gets with a mobile device that's so thin and made out of aluminum

GPS problems is affecting probably 99% of primes when wi-fi problems are affecting lets say 20%...as a company which would you adress first?
I have had a prime since day of release in UK & have stated on numerous occasions only problem I have is GPS. I do not do all these wi-fi speed tests, bench marks etc I think they just placebo, If you get low scores you are convinced tablet is slow & reverse for if you get high scores. I test my Prime by how it compares to my other products & yes my wi-fi is just as good as my neetbook,phone & old hannspad tablet
wow people are never happy. be glad that asus is actually doing something about the gps. its good to see that a company cares enough about its customers who have ALREADY bought their products to fix it up. i'm sure they will fix up wifi aswell. its good to have a responsive company.

I don't think that it is practical to carry around a wifi repeater everywhere you go...
I agree and posted about this in another thread. While some people use GPS on a tablet, ALL people use wifi on a wifi only tablet.
Perhaps the wifi issue is not as easy and can only be fixed via a panel change. The C3 model apparently does have some bill of material changes for wifi internally, but this will not overcome the attenuation issue caused by the all aluminum back panel.
That said, Flub does have a point that GPS does not work well at all, but some are having better luck with wifi. I disagree on the 20%, but the point is still valid.

Actually for me it is... I have a WL330N3G for that purpose
The point of the OP is that by repairing the GPS, which was needed, they're still not out of the water yet.
And why should I have to buy an new AP if the device is supposed to work properly? I'll do it -- but it doesn't make the original problem right.

FcUk gps, don't care much anyway, wifi location is good enough for most of the stuff, but poor wifi on a wifi ONLY device? It's like antenna on an old tv, usable once you fiddle around with it, but right pain in the ass, and god forbid to move it a millimetre.

I didn't exactly purchase this prime for its GPS, i like having the gps to update my location, etc., but I purchased it for its WIFI.
I own an HTC Sensation, which has a metal/plastic case. I receive a much stronger wifi signal with my phone than my prime.
I own an ASUS wifi-N dongle for one of my PCs. It would be awesome if I could use the dongle on my dock, I wouldn't mind that.

I seriously doubt wifi on your prime is "as good as" your other devices. My prime is slower than every one of my other 9 devices in my house. I don't care about benchmarks...they only reaffirm what I already see in everyday use. Try streaming a 1080p or even a 720p more than 20 feet away from your router and you'll likely see a problem. Depending on where you are in your house and how big your house is, the problem will be worse for some.
On campus I can barely use wifi even though it works great on my Galaxy Nexus. I'm having to buy a repeater just for the Asus Transformer Prime. At only 2 rooms away it is unusable for anything but casual web browsing.
And don't get me started on bluetooth + wifi.
At this point, despite loving everything else about my prime, I would love to just return it but I am outside of my return policy by a good bit.

My Wifi is just as good on my Asus notebook, actually better then my HP notebook and my G2 phone.

yup, all the other complaints on this forum and elsewhere are just me signed in under a different username.
I fail to see how your supposedly perfect TF201 means those that have hardware issues shouldn't complain.
